Norman Greenbaum’s ‘Spirit in the Sky’ Soars Again With Its First-Ever Official Music Video

0

Few riffs can spark instant joy like the opening fuzz-box blast of Norman Greenbaum’s “Spirit in the Sky.” First released in 1969, the four-minute-long psychedelic rocket—anchored by gritty guitar riffs and a foot-stomping gospel chorus—shot to No.1 across the globe including the US, UK, Australia and beyond, selling millions and cementing itself as a cultural touchstone. The track has been covered by everyone from Bauhaus to Elton John, with memorable placements in classic films including Apollo 13, Ocean’s Eleven and Guardians of the Galaxy. Now, more than half a century later, Craft Recordings celebrates the evergreen anthem with its first official music video, inviting a new generation to crank the volume.

Created with Greenbaum’s blessing (he even pops in for a quick cameo), the project was directed by Laurence Harlan Jacobs, who has helmed original films and music videos—including the fan-favorite 50th-anniversary short for CCR’s “Have You Ever Seen the Rain,” which has racked up over half a billion views (and counting). He’s also directed and produced projects for Oscar-winner Steve Martin, GRAMMY-winners Common, Iggy Pop and Robert Glasper, plus Valerie June and Grace Potter. Written and produced by Jessica Jacobs, “Spirit in the Sky” tips its hat to Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, as it follows a teen (Conor Sherry) who’s been grounded and completely cut off from technology. He decides to “borrow” his dad’s vintage convertible for an unforgettable, analog adventure in Los Angeles with his partner-in-crime (Abby Ryder Fortson).

Shot on location in Santa Monica and Manhattan Beach, the video bottles the carefree rush of summer adventure while doubling as a love letter to L.A.’s post-wildfire resilience. Siblings Laurence and Jessica—both L.A. natives—sprinkle in hometown Easter eggs only locals will spot, from a vintage Pali High hoodie to golden-hour walks over the Ballona Creek Bridge.

Director Laurence Harlan Jacobs shares, “When I was asked to pitch on this video, I knew it was a tall order—everyone knows this song! It’s been in so many movies and commercials. So we set out to craft a story that could emotionally hold its own—something personal and intimate that would live in harmony with the iconic song and speak to a new generation. Jessica, our writer-producer, penned a beautiful, relatable tale. Her idea captured the magic of our childhood—growing up on the Westside, listening to cassettes in our dad’s convertible, being silly and fearless with the wind in our faces. We were inspired by our filmmaking heroes, John Hughes and Cameron Crowe, and wanted to embody that same free spirit and sincerity.” He adds, “We filmed all over the city, ensuring the characters’ journey felt authentic—especially for SoCal natives. But most of all, we wanted to do the song justice and capture a sense of timelessness—one where you lose track of time, embrace your inner weird, and ride a wave of unexpected joy.”

Portraying the film’s sweetly rebellious lead, Conor Sherry channels “Spirit in the Sky” for a new generation. “Doing this project was really cool because ‘Spirit in the Sky’ is one of those songs I’ve heard a bunch of times, but never actually sat with until now…” On the video’s themes, Sherry adds, “With the rapid rise of AI, stepping away from all of that and making real-life memories felt especially relevant. And honestly, doing all that with a song that’s objectively timeless and working alongside Abby, who is incredibly talented, made it even more meaningful.”

Fresh off a starring role in the 2024 coming-of-age film, Snack Shack, the 24-year-old actor and recent UCLA graduate can also be seen in the Amazon Prime series The Terminal List and the third season of Nickelodeon’s anthology series, Are You Afraid of the Dark? Coming up, Sherry will star as Adam Sandler’s son in the highly-anticipated Netflix film, Happy Gilmore 2.

Abby Ryder Fortson, meanwhile, offers an equally engaging performance as Sherry’s on-screen accomplice. Speaking to the video’s seize-the-moment spirit—and what drew her to the project—Fortson shares, “To me, this song represents taking life by the reins and enjoying it while we can. In our modern-day world of technology constantly in the palm of our hands, it’s easy to forget that sometimes the best things in life are right in front of you. To all the teens out there (and honestly, adults too) who feel disconnected even while being constantly connected, I challenge you this summer: Put your phone down. Drive to a friend’s and go on an adventure. Get a film camera and make real memories without the pressure of posting. Go out and explore the world, wherever you are. There’s something magical waiting for you as soon as you put your phone away.”

A Critics ’Choice nominee, Fortson is best known for portraying the title character in the 2023 film adaptation of Judy Blume’s classic novel, Are You There God, It’s Me Margaret, opposite Rachel McAdams, Kathy Bates, and Benny Safdie. Last year, she appeared in the 2024 Tribeca Narrative winner, Griffin in Summer, while she can also be seen in such popular films as Ant-Man and A Dog’s Journey. The 17-year-old actor has also been active on TV, with recurring roles in Togetherness, Stephen Spielberg’s The Whispers, and, most recently HBO’s hit show, The Pitt.

The premiere of “Spirit in the Sky” follows a recent reissue of the single in stunning Dolby Atmos, while, earlier in June, Craft Recordings reissued its namesake 1969 album on vinyl. Speaking to the renewed spotlight on his signature hit, Greenbaum declares, “Half a century later, my song, ‘Spirit in the Sky’ is finding many, many new fans—not to mention, it has a Dolby Atmos mix and now, a super great video by Craft’s incredible team. How cool. It’s so exciting. Here’s to another 50!!!”

Iron Maiden Strike Gold (and Silver) With 50th Anniversary Royal Mint Coin

0

The Royal Mint has today unveiled an eye-catching commemorative coin celebrating 50 years of Iron Maiden. The East London icons are joining the ranks of musical royalty in The Royal Mint’s Music Legends series, which has previously celebrated the likes of Queen, Elton John, and David Bowie.

Crafted with meticulous attention to detail by contemporary Iron Maiden artist Albert ‘Akirant’ Quirantes, the design features the band’s infamous mascot Eddie in a dynamic pose that will strike a chord with fans worldwide. The design features numerous hidden ‘Easter eggs’ referencing the band’s illustrious career, albums and world tours – giving collectors plenty to hunt for.

Iron Maiden, who formed in 1975, worked closely with The Royal Mint throughout the design process, ensuring the coin captures the essence of a band whose influence has spanned five decades and counting. With a global footprint that spans the planet, Iron Maiden are one of the biggest success stories in British music, and with the international nature of coin-collecting this new commemorative piece – the first official collectable product to bear the 50th Anniversary logo is sure to delight and excite collectors and fans alike.

Rod Smallwood, Maiden’s Manager says “Having Eddie on an official UK coin is a continuation of his incredible odyssey since we unearthed him back in 1980. We’ve been on stamps, beer bottles, plane tails and now legal tender! The detail Akirant has managed to pack into the design is superb – there are little nods to virtually every chapter of our journey as a band. We’re truly honoured that The Royal Mint has chosen to commemorate 50 years of Iron Maiden in such a unique way.”

Rebecca Morgan, Director of Commemorative Coin at The Royal Mint, commented “Iron Maiden have been fearless pioneers in music, flying the flag for Britain around the globe for half a century. Their creative vision, powerful performances and dedicated following have earned them a place as one of Britain’s most influential bands. This coin is the perfect fusion of metal on metal and we expect it will prove to be a collector’s piece that’s highly sought after by both numismatists and passionate rock fans alike.”

Albert ‘Akirant’ Quirantes, designer of the Iron Maiden coin said, “Designing the Iron Maiden coin has been one of the most thrilling projects of my career. As a lifelong fan of the band, and Derek Riggs’ original creations in the ’80s, I wanted to capture not just their iconic imagery, but also the rebellious spirit that has defined their music for decades. I’ve hidden several references within the design that true fans will enjoy discovering, including subtle nods to classic album artwork and their most beloved songs. It’s my tribute to a band that has influenced generations of music lovers all over the world, and I hope fans will spend time exploring every detail just as passionately as they’ve analysed the band’s lyrics over the years.”

Available in several editions, from standard brilliant uncirculated to limited edition precious metal proof versions, prices for the Iron Maiden coin start from £18.50. For more information about the Iron Maiden commemorative coin and to view the full range, visit www.royalmint.com/ironmaiden.

ESCAPER Seize the Moment With ‘Chance’—A Life-Affirming Anthem From ‘Still Time’

0

NYC-based psych-jam heavyweights ESCAPER unleash their life-seizing anthem “Chance” today, the explosive single from their studio album Still Time, out now via Ropeadope Records.

Forged on a late-night post-gig drive, the hypnotic, toe-tapping track merges kinetic grooves with an existential call to arms: “This life is your one shot—take it.” The single channels the razor-edged energy of early aughts NYC rock with the undeniably danceable art-funk genius of Talking Heads, culminating in a chorus that lodges deep in the bones. It’s a fiery declaration from a band revered for turning stages into ecstatic, communal celebrations.

A meditation on the fleeting stillness between chaos and clarity, Still Time captures the rare moments where reflection meets momentum. Creative core Will Hanza (guitar/vocals) and Phil Kadet (keys/vocals) sculpt Escaper’s signature blend of rock, R&B, jazz, funk, and electronica into soul-stirring, jam-filled soundscapes. On Still Time, they’re powerfully augmented by bass virtuoso Luke Bemand (lespecial), whose deep grooves anchor the album’s low end. Rounding out the album’s tour-de-force lineup is the high-octane polyrhythmic fire of Grammy Award nominated drummer Aaron Johnston (Brazilian Girls).

“Our newest release, “Chance”, celebrates the potential we all have in this life to be as real and free as possible,” explains Hanza. “We are excited to release this first single from the upcoming album, Still Time, as the beginning of our latest journey through consciousness.

Since 2015, Escaper has ignited venues and festivals across the Northeast, drawing sit-ins from members of The Disco Biscuits, Thievery Corporation, and more. Their acclaimed live shows, heralded for a “sparkling sonic interplay” (Live for Live Music) over funky, punchy rhythms – unite music lovers of all ages in intrepid, hip-shaking communion.

Still Time follows Escaper’s 2022 EP Spaceship (Telefunken Studios) and marks their most ambitious studio work yet. The eight track release traverses genres and soundscapes with the band’s signature flair, delivering yet another dance-floor ready opus that expands their ever evolving catalog.

The Chainsmokers Pour a New Sound With ‘White Wine & Adderall’ Featuring Beau Nox

0

The Chainsmokers are back with their new single “White Wine & Adderall” with Beau Nox-a bold and relentless track that kicks off a fresh chapter in their ever-evolving sound. Today’s release is accompanied by a striking animated visualizer, giving fans a portal into what’s to come.

“It took a whole day to get the main 3 lines of this song. We sat with the incredible Beau Nox scratching our heads and left the session ultimately thinking nothing would come from the tiny hook we had written,” said Drew Taggart and Alex Pall about the process behind this song. “A couple days later Drew and I were talking about this UKG wave and I said I bet you can’t make a version of this in that world. A few hours later it was hitting pretty hard. It wasn’t a song that we immediately imagined releasing but after playing it in many of our shows and seeing the reaction it became clear to us it needed to come out. Last time I bet Drew he couldn’t make a certain style of song, we ended up with Don’t Let Me Down. After all these years, maybe this is how we work best.”

White Wine & Adderall is one of the legendary pair’s most hyped IDs with the track being previewed at shows globally to raucous crowds and viral acclaim. Its melancholy-laced lyrics clash with UKG-inspired production to create a new sound that is striking a chord with audiences worldwide. Featuring haunting vocals from the ascendant Dutch multi-instrumentalist Beau Nox, WW&A channels emotive tension into a dancefloor-ready anthem packed with propulsive energy and dance party downbeats.

C. F. Martin & Co. Honors Chris Martin IV’s 70th Birthday with Limited 1955-Inspired Guitars

0

To celebrate Chris Martin IV’s 70th birthday, C. F. Martin & Co. is proud to introduce two limited-edition guitars that honor a pivotal year in both Martin’s history and American music: the 000-18 1955 CFM IV 70th and the D-18 1955 CFM IV 70th.

1955 wasn’t just the year Chris was born—it marked the dawn of the folk boom, a cultural movement that would forever shape the sound of American music. As acoustic guitars took center stage, Martin Dreadnoughts and 000s became essential tools for a new wave of artists. These new limited-edition models pay tribute to that defining moment, blending vintage inspiration with modern craftsmanship. Each guitar is based on an original 1955 Martin recently acquired at auction. The 000-18, serial number 145102, came from the Heritage Auctions Guitar Shop Collection and was prized for its honest wear and soulful tone. The D-18, serial number 144636, was part of the renowned Skip Maggiora Collection—150 vintage instruments auctioned to benefit music education and youth charities. Both original guitars showed decades of play and served as direct inspiration for these commemorative instruments.

One of the most striking features of both models is their reclaimed spruce tops—a first for Martin. The wood comes from old-growth trees salvaged around Prince of Wales Island in Alaska, including wind-felled trees, dismantled log bridges, and massive logs once used in historic barge ramps and floating logging platforms. Sustainably sourced and steeped in history, the spruce tops are printed to replicate the look of the original 1955 instruments, adding visual character to their tonal warmth and balance.

The 000-18 1955 CFM IV 70th features a gloss 000 body with mahogany back and sides, non-scalloped Sitka spruce X-bracing, and a focused, articulate sound ideal for fingerstyle players and singer-songwriters.

The D-18 1955 CFM IV 70th offers the bold voice of a gloss Dreadnought, with rear-shifted non-scalloped X-bracing for enhanced projection and tonal clarity.

Both models include vintage-style appointments: faux tortoise binding, an Old Style 18 rosette, FSC-certified rosewood fingerboards with 1955-style mother-of-pearl inlays, satin select hardwood necks with Golden Era Modified Low Oval profiles, and Kluson Waffleback nickel tuners.

Each guitar is limited to just 70 instruments and includes a hardshell case and an embossed paper label hand-signed by Chris. Released together, they celebrate Chris’ legacy and the timeless Martin tradition of quality, innovation, and respect for the past.

The 000-18 1955 CFM IV 70th and D-18 1955 CFM IV 70th are available now online and through select Martin dealers. Learn more at martinguitar.com.

The Band Loula Capture Homegrown Magic on Debut EP ‘Sweet Southern Summer’

0

Emerging country duo The Band Loula will release their anticipated debut EP, Sweet Southern Summer, out now via Warner Music Nashville.

Reflecting on the project, the duo—Logan Simmons and Malachi Mills—shares, “Our new song ‘Sweet Southern Summer’ is a postcard from the things that raised us in North Georgia…dirt roads, rocking chairs, honeysuckle off the vine, and growing up on Lula Road. It bottles up the kind of front-porch summer that never really leaves you, no matter how much time passes. This track sets the tone for our upcoming EP, which is a patchwork of stories that encompass who we are.”

Produced by John Osborne (Brothers Osborne) with additional production from Greg Bieck (Little Big Town, etc), the EP signals a breakout year for The Band Loula, spotlighting the duo’s powerful storytelling and unique swampgrass sound. The project consists of six tracks including previously released songs “Can’t Please ‘Em All” and “Running Off The Angels,” the latter of which Billboard calls “An immensely promising release,” while All Country News declares, “a haunting, culturally charged ballad that cements their place as one of the genre’s most compelling new acts” and Music Row proclaims, “Bluesy, swampy and cool, this conjures a spell with its mysterious, haunting, Biblical images of damnation and redemption…Highly engaging.”

North Georgia natives and longtime friends, The Band Loula continues to garner widespread attention across the industry with their undeniable chemistry and near-blood harmonies, and recently made their Grand Ole Opry debut, for which they received a standing ovation.

Powerful live performers, The Band Loula is currently on the road with Dierks Bentley and Zach Top as part of Bentley’s extensive Broken Branches Tour and has spent much of the past few years touring alongside artists such as Brothers Osborne, Ashley McBryde, Paul Cauthen, Elle King and Brent Cobb. The duo was also recently confirmed to perform at Watershed Festival at The Gorge Amphitheatre in Quincy, WA on August 3. See below for current tour itinerary.

David Nail Unlocks Heart and Honesty with New Single “Hotel Keys” Featuring Dave Barnes

0

GRAMMY-nominated country singer-songwriter David Nail has released his new single, “Hotel Keys.” Featuring longtime friend and acclaimed artist Dave Barnes, who also co-wrote the song, the track is a stirring, introspective journey through the emotional cost of life on the road.

Written years ago and rediscovered with fresh inspiration, “Hotel Keys” explores themes of identity, distance, and longing – with haunting detail and emotional clarity. Barnes’s rich harmony vocals blend seamlessly with Nail’s signature raw delivery, adding depth to lyrics that travel from cold nights in Baltimore to coffee in Chicago.

“One of the crazy things about writing songs for so many years, is that unfortunately, so many great songs get left behind, and sometimes even forgotten. I didn’t forget this song, but I’m not sure it would’ve ever been heard from me, had I not been reminded by my team, of just how great it was, and in my opinion, still is!” said David Nail.

“Hotel Keys” follows a wave of critically praised independent releases, including Oh, Mother, Bootheel 2020/2021, and Best of Me, along with standout 2024 singles “If I Could Call” and “Why” featuring Aubrie Sellers. Earlier this year, Nail released “Pacing The Cage” which was recorded for Vanity Fair’s documentary “Take No Prisoners.” Now, with “Hotel Keys,” Nail shares what may be one of his most vulnerable and soul-searching songs yet.

October 17 – Indianapolis, Ind. – 8 Seconds Saloon
October 18 – Kent, Ohio – The Kent Stage
