Midge Ure To Release New Album ORCHESTRATED June 8

0

Grammy and Brit Award winning musician Midge Ure will release his new album Orchestrated in North America on June 8th. This remarkable new album features stunningly reimagined orchestrated versions of Ultravox hits and Midge Ure classics including ‘Vienna’, ‘Dancing with Tears In My Eyes’, and ‘If I Was’. Musician, singer-songwriter, producer and activist, Midge Ure has worn many musical hats over the years; however, working on a fully orchestrated album has been a new venture for Midge. Said Midge: “The record took eighteen months to make, but a lifetime of work to achieve.” The set will be released by BMG on CD and clear vinyl.

Midge Ure was one of the 80’s most visible pop/rock stars as the stylish lead singer of Ultravox. Born in Scotland, Midge began playing music in bands at a young age. As soon as he moved to London he soon found himself immersed in a scene he had previously only read about. He was a member of Slik, The Rich Kids, Visage, and, for a short while, Thin Lizzy, after which he joined Ultravox as the new front man.

Ultravox, the electronic rock pioneers who helped soundtrack the 1980’s, regrouped with Midge at the helm after two of the original band members left to pursue solo careers. As singer, songwriter, guitarist and second keyboardist, this second incarnation would become the classic line-up. The album, ‘Vienna’, was recorded in 1980. Although it was the band’s fourth album, it was the first with Midge, and the first one to chart. When the title track ‘Vienna’ was released as a single in early 1981 it became a huge hit and spent four weeks at no.2 in the UK singles chart and was the 5th highest selling single in the UK that year. The album itself re-entered the album chart and peaked at no.3.

Midge produced and co-wrote the Band Aid anthem ‘Do They Know It’s Christmas?’ with Bob Geldof and also co-organized the Live Aid concert in 1985 as well as the Live 8 concerts.

Midge and Bob jointly set up the Band Aid Trust, and is still active as a Band Aid Trustee. Both Midge and Bob have been honored with two Ivor Novello awards for writing the song. After working on the Band Aid project and during a hiatus from Ultravox, Midge pursued a highly successful solo career in 1985. The single, ‘If I Was’, was a UK number 1 single, and his debut album, ‘The Gift’, reached No. 2. After returning to Ultravox for what would be their final album together, the band effectively disbanded in 1987 and Ure concentrated solely on his solo career.

Now Midge Ure is back with this fabulous collection, celebrating his catalogue with these beautifully crafted versions of his classic hits.

Ray Davies To Release ‘Our Country: Americana Act II’ June 29

0

The continuing story of The Kinks co-founder’s journeys through America, as depicted in his 2013 memoir Americana and last year’s album of the same name, OUR COUNTRY: AMERICANA ACT II is an album borne from Davies’ vision of America — how it shaped him and evolved through the years. His reflections on his experiences in America instigate personal reformation, and eventually rediscovery and celebration of his own origins.

OUR COUNTRY, like its predecessor, was recorded at the legendary Konk Studios in London with guitarist Bill Shanley and The Jayhawks once again serving as Davies’ backing band plus a group of UK musicians. The album picks up several intriguing musical threads from Davies’ extraordinary songwriting catalog, from the opener “Our Country” – which is developed from a melodic theme heard in AMERICANA’s title track – to reinterpretations of songs inspired by America and written for various projects over the years, including “Oklahoma USA” (first heard on The Kinks’ MUSWELL HILBILLIES), “The Real World” (from 2007’s acclaimed solo album, WORKING MAN’S CAFÉ) and “The Getaway” (from 2006’s OTHER PEOPLES LIVES).

OUR COUNTRY: AMERICANA ACT II was arranged and produced by Ray Davies; the album was co-produced by Guy Massey and John Jackson. All songs by Ray Davies.

Davies’ first all original solo work in a decade, AMERICANA was greeted with international critical acclaim upon its release last year. “The Kinks legend uses AMERICANA to blaze a path through both America’s rock ’n’ roll history and his own,” raved Pitchfork. “Its back-to-basics energy and prosaic storytelling make it Davies’ best solo album in years.” Mojo called it “his most personal album to date” and Uncut said that “AMERICANA is a deeply satisfying reminder that Davies remains a songwriter with a huge reach but few equals”. “There’s a lot to chew on,” wrote American Songwriter, “but AMERICANA is a first class offering from one of the UK’s most feted songwriters and a worthy entry into Ray Davies’ rightfully esteemed catalog.” “AMERICANA is a big story,” wrote Consequence of Sound, “and it’s not one with tidy resolutions or easy fixes. But Davies is far less preoccupied with trying to tie up the loose ends than he is pointing out America’s dual narratives. There is the fantasy and there is real life, and more often than not they bleed over into one another. And once again, it took the efforts of one of our greatest living songwriters to spell it all out for us.”

Ray Davies is currently working on a theatre/film piece based on both AMERICANA and OUR COUNTRY.

John Coltrane and the Economy of the Blues

0

It’s true: sometimes less is more. Instructor Vince di Mura uses the music of John Coltrane to explain the limitless interpretations that improvisors can create from a composer’s seemingly simple material. This episode of Soundfly’s free series “A Conversation with the Blues,” explores how Coltrane broke down the 12 bar blues to make room for harmonies and improvisation.

Bilboard Has Changed The Math Behind The Hot 100 and Top 200 Album Chart

0

Billboard’s main singles chart, the Hot 100, which was already confusing because it has long included radio airplay data alongside sales figures, will continue to count streams on most platforms, but from July there’ll be a points system depending on how the stream was accessed.

Explains Billboard: “[The chart] will have multiple weighted tiers of streaming plays for the Hot 100, which take into account paid subscription streams (representing a full point value per play), ad-supported streams (representing a 2/3-point value per play) and programmed streams (representing a 1/2-point value per play). Those values are then applied to the chart’s formula alongside all-genre radio airplay and digital song sales data”.

On the main albums chart, the Hot 200, you have the additional challenge of equating track streams with album sales. In that countdown, Billboard says: “[This chart] will now include two tiers of on-demand audio streams. Tier 1: paid subscription audio streams (equating 1250 streams to 1 album unit) and Tier 2: ad-supported audio streams (equating 3750 streams to 1 album unit)”.

Death Cab For Cutie Announce New Album Set To Arrive Late Summer

0

Atlantic recording group Death Cab for Cutie has announced details of their upcoming fall tour. The dates – which see the 8x GRAMMY Award-nominated band playing intimate venues and theatres across North America – begin September 24th at Eugene, OR’s Hult Center for the Performing Arts and travel through mid-October. Death Cab for Cutie pre-sales begin Wednesday, May 2nd at 10am (local). One dollar from each ticket purchased through the band’s website will go towards The Aurora Commons – a Seattle based non-profit organization which offers a safe space for unhoused neighbors to rest, prepare a meal, connect to resources, and collectively create a healthy and vibrant community. All remaining tickets will be released to the general public on Friday, May 4th at 10 am (local).

Death Cab for Cutie recently finished recording their highly anticipated new album, and today unveiled the first glimpse via a teaser clip featuring one of the tracks. The album will arrive in late summer and marks the first Death Cab for Cutie release to see long time bandmates Ben Gibbard, Nick Harmer, and Jason McGerr joined in the studio by new members Dave Depper (Menomena, Fruit Bats, Corin Tucker, Ray Lamontagne) and Zac Rae (My Brightest Diamond, Fiona Apple, Lana Del Rey, Gnarls Barkley). Depper and Rae have both been part of Death Cab’s touring band since 2015.

Meanwhile, Death Cab for Cutie are currently poised to embark on a limited series of international summer live dates, including headline shows in Amstelveen, NL and London – the latter set for June 18th as part of Robert Smith’s Meltdown at the Southbank Centre – as well as our own Salt Lake City, UT’s Red Butte Garden Amphitheatre (August 2nd) and Boise, ID’s Summerfield at Memorial Stadium (August 3rd). In addition, the band will be among the headliners at a number of upcoming festivals: Travelers Rest, curated by The Decemberists at Missoula, MT’s Big Sky Brewing Company Amphitheatre on August 4th and 5th, Life Is Beautiful Music & Art Festival in Las Vegas (September 21-23), and São Paulo, Brazil’s Popload Festival, set for November 15th at the world famous Memorial da América Latina.

Death Cab for Cutie was born in 1997 when Western Washington University engineering student and budding guitarist-songwriter Benjamin Gibbard first united with guitarist-keyboardist-producer Chris Walla and bassist Nick Harmer to record a demo cassette dubbed “YOU CAN PLAY THESE SONGS WITH CHORDS.” Though Gibbard had initially conceived the tape as a solo project, the eight-song cassette proved both popular and aesthetically successful, prompting him to reconfigure Death Cab for Cutie as a full band. Death Cab for Cutie made their official live debut on November 22nd that same year, a performance recently uncovered and released as “FIRST SHOW, ACOUSTIC AT THE PACER HOUSE, BELLINGHAM WA. 11/22/97,” available now exclusively via Bandcamp; downloads begin at $4 with all of the band’s proceeds benefitting Seattle’s The Aurora Commons.

Immediately hailed as one of indie rock’s most compelling and creative collectives, Death Cab for Cutie’s milestone debut album, “SOMETHING ABOUT AIRPLANES,” arrived in 1998 via the Seattle-based independent label, Barsuk. The band enjoyed a long relationship with Barsuk before making their Atlantic Records debut with 2005’s fifth studio release, “PLANS.” The album proved the band’s popular breakthrough, earning RIAA platinum certification as well as spawning the chart-topping singles, “Soul Meets Body” and “I Will Follow You Into The Dark.” The latter track was honored with a GRAMMY nomination as “Best Pop Performance By Duo Or Group With Vocals,” with “PLANS” receiving the nod as “Best Alternative Album.” “DIRECTIONS,” the 2006 DVD companion to “PLANS,” earned an additional GRAMMY nod as “Best Longform Music Video.”

Now fully affirmed as an era-defining band, Death Cab for Cutie made a stunning #1 debut atop the SoundScan/Billboard 200 with 2008’s RIAA gold certified “NARROW STAIRS.” More critical acclaim and two further GRAMMY nominations followed, including nods for “Best Alternative Album” and “Best Rock Song” (honoring the hit single, “I Will Possess Your Heart”). “THE OPEN DOOR” EP was released in 2009, earning DCFC a third consecutive GRAMMY Award nomination for “Best Alternative Album.” “CODES AND KEYS” arrived in 2011 and made a top 3 entry on the SoundScan/Billboard 200 before receiving the band’s fourth straight GRAMMY nomination for “Best Alternative Music Album.” “You Are A Tourist,” the album’s first single, also proved a multi-format radio smash, reaching #1 at both Triple A and Modern Rock outlets nationwide – Death Cab for Cutie’s first-ever #1 at the latter format.

Death Cab for Cutie’s eighth studio album, “KINTSUGI” made a remarkable chart debut upon its March 2015 release, debuting at #1 on Billboard’s “Top Alternative Albums” and “Top Rock Albums” charts, as well as #8 on the overall SoundScan/Billboard 200. Hailed by Magnet as perhaps “the best record of (Death Cab for Cuties’s) 17-year career,” the album was honored with a “Best Rock Album” nomination for the 58th Annual GRAMMY Awards – the iconic band’s eighth overall nod.
