“How To Talk To Girls At Parties” Gets Punk-Filled Soundtrack

0

Sony Music Masterworks has announced the release of How To Talk To Girls At Parties (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), the musical companion to the hugely anticipated new film from award-winning writer-director, John Cameron Mitchell (Hedwig and the Angry Inch), based on the short story by Neil Gaiman (American Gods, Norse Mythology). The album arrives at all music retailers and streaming services on Friday, May 11. Out today ahead of the full soundtrack release is the single track, “Between the Breaths” from beloved indie-darlings, Mitski and Xiu Xiu. The A24 release of a See-Saw Films/Little Punk production, How to Talk to Girls at Parties opens in theaters across the U.S on May 25. StudioCanal UK releases the film across the UK on May 11.

Hailed by VICE as “a bittersweet intersectional love story between a rebellious alien and an out-of-his-depth insecure schoolboy fanzine writer,” How to Talk to Girls at Parties is an electrifying and singular punk rock extravaganza set in the kinetic world of 1977 London. How To Talk to Girls at Parties (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) includes new music and songs composed expressly for the film by such strikingly unique artists as Nico Muhly, Jamie Stewart (Xiu Xiu), and Matmos. In addition, the album features original songs performed by the film’s fictional punk band, The Dyschords, written by Bryan Weller and vocalist Martin Tomlinson (Selfish C***), alongside additional new music from the film performed by writer-director John Cameron Mitchell, cabaret legend Amber Martin, and How To Talk To Girls At Parties stars Elle Fanning and Alex Sharp. In addition, the soundtrack also gathers landmark tracks from such iconic artists as The Velvet Underground, The Damned, A.C. Newman, Ezra Furmanand, and the Prolific Urdoos (a.k.a. DIY punk hero Bruno Wizard of The Homosexuals).

Adapted by Philippa Goslett and John Cameron Mitchell from the classic short story of the same name by Neil Gaiman, How to Talk to Girls at Parties was heralded earlier this month by an equally vibrant new trailer. Media outlets including NYLON and i-D raved, with the latter declaring that How to Talk to Girls at Parties “looks freakishly good.” “As he did with his film Hedwig and the Angry Inch, (John Cameron Mitchell has) created something that’s as much about a music scene and what it means to its fandom as it is about the characters or the story,” wrote The Verge. “It also looks like a visually bonkers wild ride.”

Kellogg’s Chocolate Frosted Flakes Drops First-Ever Record Made Of Cereal

0

Chocolate lovers will be singing a new tune when Kellogg’s Chocolate Frosted Flakes hits bowls and playlists today with the first record to ever be made out of actual cereal – so that when you are done listening to new release “Hello” from Simon Cowell-backed boy band PRETTYMUCH, you can enjoy the sweet taste of Chocolate Frosted Flakes.

The delicious, vinyl-inspired record features a core of Chocolate Frosted Flakes, topped with layers of milk and dark chocolate. Pressed in a 3D-printed mold to create playable grooves, the limited-edition record features a silhouette of Tony the Tiger, to showcase the crunchy, chocolatey Chocolate Frosted Flakes.

Sweetening the record beyond its cereal recipe is the song it features, the new release “Hello” by PRETTYMUCH, an iHeartRadio 2018 Best Boy Band nominee. For the full Chocolate Frosted Flakes experience, fans view an exclusive “Hello” music video featuring Tony the Tiger on PRETTYMUCH’s YouTube channel, and take the dance party on the go by downloading the song on iTunes.

Select fans who registered with PRETTYMUCH in advance will be the first to receive the record today and have the chance to meet the band in person at Kellogg’s NYC café. Starting tomorrow, all fans can pick up the Chocolate Frosted Flakes record for free at the café, while supplies last. A limited number of the collector’s item will also be available in Chicago on April 21 at Reckless Records’ Wicker Park location, in honor of Record Store Day.

Unlike other chocolate cereals, Chocolate Frosted Flakes’ flavor is just that – frosted – onto the corn flake base, providing a distinctly chocolatey taste while maintaining a satisfying crunch. Kellogg’s worked directly with fans to test how different cocoas interact with balancing notes on the cereal flake and in the milk left at the bottom of the bowl.

Chocolate Frosted Flakes is available at all major retailers and grocery stores where breakfast foods are sold with a suggested retail price between $4.69 and $5.79.

ASCAP Delivers for the First Time More Than $1 Billion to Songwriter, Composer and Music Publisher Members

0

ASCAP, The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, the world leader in performing rights and advocacy for music creators, announced record-high revenues and distributions in 2017. The organization, which today represents more than 660,000 members, collected approximately $1.144 billion in revenues last year and distributed for the first time more than $1.007 billion to its songwriter, composer and music publisher members. Total ASCAP revenues increased by 8 percent and distributions were up 10 percent year-over-year.

Revenues from ASCAP’s licensing efforts in the US alone grew nearly 11 percent in 2017 to $846 million, up $86.9 million over 2016.

Domestic distributions from ASCAP-licensed and administered performances in the US also increased, to $723 million, up 15 percent over 2016.

ASCAP operates on a not-for-profit basis and delivers about 88 cents of every dollar collected back to members for performances of their music. With a 2017 operating expense ratio of about 12 percent, ASCAP remains among the most efficient Performance Rights Organizations in the world, while transforming to stay ahead of massive changes in the music industry.

ASCAP’s domestic revenue growth was fueled by increased revenues across multiple platforms, including audio streaming services, audiovisual media and radio. ASCAP also continued to secure future revenues for members by closing significant licensing deals with major media companies. An agreement with YouTube for public performance rights and data collaboration, announced last June, will improve the accuracy and reliability of the metadata attached to musical works, and will result in greater compensation for ASCAP members.

ASCAP debuted a market-leading suite of digital tools in its Member Access portal in 2017, unparalleled in the performing rights sector. The tools make it easy for songwriters, composers and publishers to register and manage large catalogs of music and provide songwriters and publishers with new data visualization tools for a deeper dive into their earnings data. Ultimately, ASCAP’s new tools empower members to make more informed business decisions about their catalogs and works.

ASCAP’s groundbreaking moves in transparency and innovation continued to lead the industry toward more cooperation and alignment on data issues. Together with SACEM and PRS for Music, ASCAP launched an initiative to improve the sharing of unique identifiers and matching of sound recordings and compositions across the industry and in multiple territories, leveraging cutting-edge technology, such as blockchain and graph databases. ASCAP and BMI also announced a joint database reconciliation project of our songs repertories that will deliver an authoritative view of ownership shares for the vast majority of music licensed in the US.

ASCAP members wrote the soundtrack to 2017. From pop to hip-hop, Latin to R&B, country to EDM and rock to gospel, music from ASCAP songwriters crowned 31 separate year-end song charts in 2017 and took all 10 of the Top 10 spots on the year-end Billboard Hot 100. Chart-topping members included Ashley Gorley, Drew Taggart, Daddy Yankee, Christopher Brody Brown, James Fauntleroy, Ray Charles McCullough & Jeremy Reeves (The Stereotypes), Frederic Kennett, Isaac Slade, Joe King, Kandi Burruss, Tameka Cottle, Steve Mac (PRS), Justin Bieber, Poo Bear, Mattman & Robin (STIM), Kendrick Lamar, Mike Will Made-It, Lil Uzi Vert, Louis Bell and Quavo.

More than 45,000 new members joined ASCAP in 2017, among them Dua Lipa, Carlos Vives, Maluma, Nana Rogues (Drake, “Passionfruit”), Jonas Jeberg (Fifth Harmony, “Sledgehammer” & Selena Gomez, “Fetish”) and Emily Warren (The Chainsmokers, “Don’t Let Me Down ft. Daya” & Dua Lipa, “New Rules”). Top ASCAP members renewing their agreements included Billy Joel, Cardi B, Coldplay, Meghan Trainor, Sam Hunt, Ariana Grande, Donald Fagen, Justin Bieber, Joss Favela, Big Sean, Kendrick Lamar, Drew Taggart (of The Chainsmokers), Benj Pasek & Justin Paul, Christopher Brody Brown, Starrah, Demi Lovato, French Montana, Lil Uzi Vert, Brett James, Henry Jackman and Heitor Pereira.

The Prince Estate Releases Legendary Original Studio Recording Of “Nothing Compares 2 U”

0

The Prince Estate, in collaboration with Warner Bros. Records, has now released the original version of the iconic song “Nothing Compares 2 U”. This previously unreleased version was recorded in 1984, six years before 1990’s classic reimagining by Sinéad O’Connor and before Prince started performing the song live.  The track was recorded at the Flying Cloud Drive ‘Warehouse’ in Eden Prairie by Prince’s long-time engineer Susan Rogers, and originally composed, arranged and performed in its entirety by Prince, aside from the backing vocals by Susannah Melvoin and Paul “St. Paul” Peterson.  Also featured on the original track is saxophone work by Eric Leeds. The new version of the song will be available to stream, to purchase via digital retailers and as two 7” vinyl singles (in picture disk and standard black vinyl formats).

As remembered by Michael Howe, long-time industry A&R executive, Prince expert, and the Prince Estate’s official Vault Archivist, “I spotted the 2″ multitrack reel in the Vault some weeks back while doing a 1984-era inventory. After retrieving my jaw from the floor, we took the reel upstairs, analyzed it, put it up on the Studer 24 track machine, and digitized it to 24/192. Even our ‘faders up’ rough mix was compelling enough to indicate that this was something very special indeed.”

Howe continued, “No Prince-penned song performed by another artist has enjoyed more chart success (#1 in over a dozen countries) and overall cultural impact than Sinead O’Connor’s 1990 recording, so hearing the song in its original context performed in its entirety by the author makes it particularly noteworthy.”

The song is accompanied by a video featuring never before seen rehearsal footage of Prince & The Revolution practicing their choreography in that same Eden Prairie warehouse during the same summer of 1984. Captured for Prince as a part of his rehearsal process, the footage is presented for the very first time in a video directed by Andrea Gelardin and Ruth Hogben. The video offers a glimpse into Prince’s total commitment to his art and its emotional impact, even when no audience is present.

After the successful launch of the Prince HitNRun online pop-up store last November, the Prince Estate is bringing back the concept (www.PrinceHitNRun.com), where the limited edition, picture disk vinyl will be sold exclusively. In addition to the limited edition picture disk vinyl, fans will also be able to purchase a variety of official Prince merchandise, including pieces that draw from his iconic Dirty Mind and Lovesexy eras.  The black vinyl 7” will be available for pre-order from major physical retailers and will be released on Friday 25th May.

The Prince Estate has also launched a new site for fans to showcase what Prince means to them. Prince2Me (www.Prince2Me.com) is an interactive fan experience that explores what Prince means, individually and collectively to his fans. The Prince Estate has also announced that this will be the first of many online experiences to come, each will shine a new light on his artistry. When fans visit the Prince2Me site they will be able to craft their own message using Prince vocabulary, an array of images and videos provided by the Estate. Once a fan creates their desired message they can share their post across social media and spark the conversation of who Prince is to them. Fans who use Twitter to share their Prince2Me messages using #Prince2Me or #NothingCompares2U will be able to activate an exclusive Prince Love Symbol Twitter emoji.

In addition to the Prince2Me site, the Estate has launched an immersive annotated discography website highlighting the incomparable breadth and depth of Prince’s recorded catalogue.  Featuring audio previews, photos, videos, quotes and editorial commentary, the discography site provides a rich platform for fans old and new to immerse themselves in the creative genius of Prince.

The Prince Estate serves to present Prince’s life and work, and celebrate his ground-breaking cultural impact.
