MusiCounts Announces Hedley As Sponsor Of 2018 Teacher Of The Year Award
Today, MusiCounts, Canada’s leading music education charity, is pleased to announce JUNO Award winning band Hedley will sponsor the 2018 MusiCounts Teacher of the Year Award. Established in 2005, the Award pays tribute to the accomplishments of one exceptional music teacher each year. Nominations are now open and can be made via musicounts.ca until January 5, 2018.
“We’re thrilled that Hedley is sponsoring the 2018 MusiCounts Teacher of the Year Award,” said Kristy Fletcher, Director, MusiCounts. “Hedley’s music resonates with a young audience, making them the perfect choice to sponsor an award that recognizes teachers who positively impact the lives of his or her students.”
“Music teachers empower and inspire the next generation of Canadian artists,” said Hedley frontman Jacob Hoggard. “Without dedicated teachers, there would be no music class. That’s why it was so important for us to sponsor the MusiCounts Teacher of the Year Award to recognize and honour their amazing work.”
The MusiCounts Teacher of the Year Award recognizes dedicated music teachers who work hard to keep music alive in schools across the country. Each year, the award is sponsored or presented by an artist. Past sponsors include, The Rolling Stones, Michael Bublé, Céline Dion, Shania Twain, RUSH, Tragically Hip, Anne Murray, Billy Talent, Johnny Reid, Blue Rodeo, Gord Bamford and MAGIC!.
The Award nomination is open to any previous MusiCounts Band Aid Program recipient school and includes a $10,000 cash donation to the recipient teacher, a significant contribution to the recipient school’s music program, an invitation to attend the 2018 JUNO Award weekend for the recipient and a guest and a spectacular crystal statuette based on the JUNO Award design by Canadian glass artist Shirley Elford.

As the company announced last week, there are now more than 25 million business profiles on Instagram, up from 15 million in July. Considering that Instagram only launched these profiles along with other business tools in June 2016, these numbers clearly indicate that brands are embracing Instagram as a new way to connect with consumers. And it appears to be working: as of March 2017, 80 percent of Instagram’s users followed a business, and in November, 200 million Instagrammers visited a business profile every day.
Getting businesses on board is a crucial stepping stone to monetizing a platform such as Instagram, because it increases its acceptance among professionals and its attractiveness to advertisers. As of September 2017, Instagram had two million active advertisers per month – a tenfold increase since March 2016.

Santana Divination Tour Is Announced For 2018
Delivered with a level of passion and soul equal to the legendary sonic charge of his guitar, the sound of Carlos Santana is one of the world’s best-known musical signatures. For more than four decades—from Santana’s earliest days as a groundbreaking Afro-Latin-blues-rock fusion outfit in San Francisco—Carlos has been the visionary force behind artistry that transcends musical genres and generational, cultural and geographical boundaries.
Long before the category now known as “world music” was named, Santana’s ever-evolving sound was always ahead of its time in its universal appeal, and today registers as ideally in sync with the 21st century’s pan-cultural landscape. And, with a dedication to humanitarian outreach and social activism that parallels his lifelong relationship with music, Carlos Santana is as much an exemplary world citizen as a global music icon.
Santana’s star arrived in the era-defining late 1960s San Francisco Bay Area music scene with historic shows at the Fillmore and other storied venues. The group emerged onto the global stage with an epic set at the Woodstock festival in 1969, the same year that its self-titled debut LP Santana came out. Introducing Santana’s first Top 10 hit, “Evil Ways,” the disc stayed on Billboard’s album chart for two years and was soon followed by two more classics — and Billboard #1 albums — Abraxas and Santana III.
Ever since, for more than forty years and almost as many albums later, Santana has sold more than 100 million records and reached more than 100 million fans at concerts worldwide. To date, Santana has won 10 GRAMMY Awards, including a record-tying nine for a single project, 1999’s Supernatural (including Album of the Year and Record of the Year for “Smooth”) as well as three Latin GRAMMY’s. In 1998, the group was ushered into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, whose website notes, “Guitarist Carlos Santana is one of rock’s true virtuosos and guiding lights.”
Among many other honors, Carlos Santana received Billboard Latin Music Awards’ 2009 Lifetime Achievement honor, and, he was bestowed Billboard’s Century Award in 1996. On December 8, 2013 he was the recipient of the 2013 Kennedy Center Honors Award. Rolling Stone has also named him #15 on the magazine’s list of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time” noting that “Santana’s crystalline tone and clean arcing sustain make him the rare instrumentalist who can be identified in just one note.” And, with the 2014 release of Corazón, Santana surpassed the Rolling Stones and is one of only two music acts in Billboard history to score at least one Top Ten album for six consecutive decades from the 1960s on.
In the fall of 2014 Carlos Santana released his memoir “The Universal Tone: Bringing My Story to Light” which offers a page-turning tale of musical self-determination and inner self-discovery, with personal stories filled with colorful detail and life-affirming lessons. It’s a profoundly inspiring tale of divine inspiration and musical fearlessness that does not balk at finding the humor in the world of high flying fame, or at speaking plainly of Santana’s personal revelations and the infinite possibility he sees in each person he meets.
In 2016, Carlos reunited with the revered early ‘70s Santana lineup to release an album entitled: ‘Santana IV.’ The album debuted at #5 on Billboard’s Top 200 Chart, #2 on Billboard’s Top Current Chart, #2 on Billboard’s Rock Chart, and #1 on Billboard’s Independent Albums Chart. This album marks Santana’s fourteenth Top 10 album.
In 2017, Carlos Santana and Cindy Blackman Santana joined forces with The Isley Brothers (Ronald and Ernie) to release Power of Peace, an album celebrating the timeless sounds of funk, soul, blues, rock, jazz, and pop. Santana is currently headlining a multi-year residency at House of Blues at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas.

Carlos executive produced the Peter Bratt-directed documentary film DOLORES, about the life and work of Dolores Huerta, who is among the most important, yet least known, activists in American history. An equal partner in co-founding the first farm workers unions with Cesar Chavez, her enormous contributions have gone largely unrecognized. Dolores tirelessly led the fight for racial and labor justice alongside Chavez, becoming one of the most defiant feminists of the twentieth century—and she continues the fight to this day, at 87. With intimate and unprecedented access to this intensely private mother to eleven, the film reveals the raw, personal stakes involved in committing one’s life to social change.
The arc of Santana’s performing and recording career is complemented by a lifelong devotion to social activism and humanitarian causes. The Milagro Foundation, originally established by Carlos Santana and his family in 1998, has granted more than seven million dollars to non-profit programs supporting underserved children and youth in the areas of arts, education and health. Milagro means “miracle,” and the image of children as divine miracles of light and hope—gifts to our lives—is the inspiration behind its name.
