Canadian Band Rush Have Long-Haired Microbes Named After Them

0

Three new species of microbe found in the guts of termites have been named after members of the Canadian prog-rock band Rush, owing to the microbes’ long hair and rhythmic wriggling under the microscope.

“A Spanish postdoc, Javier del Campo, asked me to recommend some good Canadian music, and I suggested he listen to Rush,” says Patrick Keeling, a University of British Columbia microbiologist and senior author on the paper describing the new species. “He came back to me and said ‘Those microbes we’re finding have long hair like the guys on the album 2112!’”

The microbes in question are covered with flagella, which are long threads that cells use to move around. Many cells have a few flagella, but these little rockers have more than ten thousand very long flagella, giving them flowing hair that even Farrah Fawcett might envy.

And while Rush may not be famous for their dance moves, the tiny creatures also have rhythm. They bob their heads and sway their bodies in microscopic dances, prompting the researchers to baptize the new Pseudotrichonympha species P. leei, P. lifesoni, and P. pearti after musicians Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson and Neil Peart.

The researchers outlined their findings in Scientific Reports.

Chad Smith loses it after fan yelling “Will Ferrell” at him

0

One of the great doppelgängers has to be between Chad Smith and Will Ferrell, and it’s been going on twenty years at this point. Smith told the story of how they first met a number of years ago to Spin Magazine, “There was a screening of the film at Paramount in Hollywood. At the time I was dating a girl who worked there. I went to the screening, and you were there and all the actors were there, and after the film there was a little reception thing and cocktails and little, you know, table with food and chicken skewers and shrimp whatevers. And you were over there getting your food, and I was like, “I’m not going to go over. I’m not going to be that guy, like, heyyyy, [untranscribable gurgling noise]. But I’m over there, filling my plate with food, and there was a gentleman standing between us. And sure enough, he walks away, and we both turned at the same time to each other with our plates of food. And you just looked me up and down really quick and said, “You’re very handsome.”

But that doesn’t mean you should call out Ferrell’s name to him when he’s playing drums, as you can see in the clip below.

Must-Haves For Your Vinyl Collection

I’ve received compensation from TD for this post, however, all opinions in this post are my own.

Quoting song lyrics may be the corniest thing in the world to do, but it’s totally me. So, to tip the hat to those amazing 80s-era one-hit wonders, I’m “Walking on Sunshine” these days. And yeah, it feels good…

By now, you’ve probably heard the scoop. The new TD Cash Back Visa Infinite* Card has a special time-limited Welcome Bonus where you can earn 6% in Cash Back Dollars to a maximum total spend of $3500 during the first 3 months of opening your account – that’s $210 in potential Cash Back Dollars. (Small print: Conditions apply. Special Welcome Bonus offer ends December 3, 2017).  Oh and did I mention you can redeem anytime?? Not just once annually (again, if you have earned a min. of $25 in Cash Back Dollars).

With my TD Cash Back Visa Infinite* Card, I decided to finally treat myself to some sweet vinyl albums – a treat made possible by using the Cash Back Dollars on my Card that I earned on everyday purchases. Pretty cool, huh? I picked up a 6-disc anniversary edition of one of my favourite bands. Can you guess who it is?!

Here’s the deal: This new edition has 33 additional recordings from the studio sessions, most previously unreleased and mixed for the first time from the four-track session tapes, sequenced in chronological order of their recording dates. This is just one of the little luxuries I’ve been able to treat myself to!

And at the risk of drawing groans from the imaginary cheap seats, allow me to quote yet another song lyric that seems to fit right now, this time from one of my biggest heroes.“I’ve been waiting for this moment, all my life.”

Murray McLauchlan on Old Times and New Times Selling Albums

0

“When the album-a-year thing was going on, really through the ‘70s, the whole industrial model was completely different than the way it is now,” he says. “There was a cycle – you’d make the record, put the record out, give it to radio, tour the record, then the tour would be over, and you’d go back and make another record and do the same thing over again.

“That’s totally, completely, absolutely gone now. There’s no driving force that compels you to make records. Now it’s a labour of love. The principal difference now is, if I put out a record like Human Writes or Love Can’t Tell Time, I have a huge amount of fun doing them – they’re artistic driven projects for me – and I have zero commercial expectations of them.

“I do enjoy going out and playing them, but if I don’t, probably nobody’s going to hear the songs.”

– Murray McLauchlan interview with John Law in the Niagara Falls Review

Your Favorite Millarworld Comics Are Coming To Netflix

0

That’s right comic book fans, you will be able to stream your favorite Millarworld titles on Netflix instantly! This year Mark Miller made a deal with Netflix handing over the rights to almost all of his comics, which means that soon you’ll be able to binge-watch your favorite Millarworld classics from your couch or smartphone.

Millarworld Comics

Millar has been writing and working in the comic book industry since 1989, writing his own comics and spending years working alongside the creators of Marvel and X-Men movies. He also wrote the critically-acclaimed mini-series “Superman: Red Son” published by DC Comics.

Many of Millar’s comics were the inspiration for a number of Marvel blockbusters. Millar’s “Old Man Logan” was the inspiration for Marvel’s recent movie Logan, and his “Civil War” comic served as the basis for the story in the movie Captain America: Civil War. Millar also recreated “The Ultimates,” an adaption of an earlier classic, which was given credit for inspiring the multi-film superhero collection, “The Avengers.”

In 2004, Millar left Marvel and went on to own build his own comic book empire, Millarworld. Millar not only writes original fan-favorites, but he has worked as the executive producer for all of his Millarworld movie adaptations as well. One of his first titles, “Wanted” was the highest sold creator-owned comic of the decade. It was later turned into a $340 million grossing movie at the box office, starring Angelina Jolie and Morgan Freeman. With the success of comics-turned-feature-films like “Wanted,” “Kick-Ass” and “Kingsman,” the sky is the limit for Mark Millar his potential new feature films with Netflix.

What Does This Mean For Millarworld Fans?

With the acquisition of Millarworld, Netflix has the right to create original series or movies based on Millar’s comics. Millar mentioned that Kick-Ass and Kingsman are not included in the Netflix deal to make adaptations, but 12 other comics are “fair game.” That means that Netflix could be bringing your favorite comics to life like:

  • Chrononauts
  • Huck
  • American Jesus
  • Starlight
  • Superior
  • Empress
  • Jupiter’s Legacy

In addition to these classics, Millar says he will continue to create and publish new comics with his Millarworld team under Netflix.
