New Jimi Hendrix Album Out March 9 “Both Sides of the Sky” Completing the Trilogy Started with Valleys of Neptune and People, Hell and Angels

0

On March 9, Experience Hendrix and Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment, proudly release Both Sides of the Sky, a dynamic new Jimi Hendrix album featuring 13 studio recordings made between 1968 and 1970—10 of which have never before been released. The album will be released on multiple formats including CD, digital, and as a numbered 180 gram audiophile vinyl 2LP.

Both Sides of the Sky is the third volume in a trilogy of albums intended to present the best and most significant unissued studio recordings remaining in the music legend’s archive. Beginning with Valleys of Neptune (2010), which earned top ten sales rankings in fifteen countries (including a top position of #4 on Billboard’s Top 200 Album Chart), followed by People, Hell and Angels (2013) which peaked on Billboard’s Top 100 album chart at #2. Billboard’s coveted number one singles ranking went to “Somewhere,” the album’s lead track and the legendary guitarist’s highest ever US singles chart achievement. This third release is anticipated to complete the spectacular recording event in epic fashion. “Since Experience Hendrix began its restoration of the Jimi Hendrix music catalog in 1997, our goal has been to present these important recordings to Jimi’s fans in the best possible quality. We are excited about achieving that. We’ve also been intent on generating album releases which present this amazing music in its proper context,” explains John McDermott, one of the album’s co-producers, together with Janie Hendrix and Eddie Kramer.

Recorded between January 1968 and February 1970, Jimi’s desire to push the boundaries of blues music can be heard throughout. Both Sides of the Sky additionally highlights Jimi’s mastery of studio production and his increasing use of these facilities as a proving ground for new sounds, material, and techniques. Many of the album’s tracks were recorded by the trio that would come to be known as Band of Gypsys: Jimi on guitar and vocals, Billy Cox on bass, and Buddy Miles on drums. For their first-ever recording session on April 22, 1969, Hendrix turned to their shared musical root, delta blues. Their previously unreleased, uptempo reworking of Muddy Waters’ “Mannish Boy” opens the album and sets the tempo for what follows. “Lover Man” was a favored Hendrix original and the guitarist was determined to realize a finished master. Previous attempts by the original Experience had yet to yield this for Hendrix but this December 1969 effort by the Band Of Gypsys — complete with its homage to the popular Batman theme song—was his strongest effort to date.

“Hear My Train A Comin'” features drummer Mitch Mitchell and bassist Noel Redding from the original Jimi Hendrix Experience. This original blues composition had become a staple of Hendrix’s concerts. This previously unreleased April 1969 recording captured the furious power and dynamic tension that made the song so memorable. Previously unheard recordings of “Stepping Stone,” “Jungle,” “Cherokee Mist” (which features Hendrix on both electric guitar and sitar) as well as the January 1968 recording of “Sweet Angel” provide further highlights.

Both Sides of the Sky also features an assortment of notable guest musicians. Stephen Stills befriended Hendrix at the June 1967 Monterey Pop Festival. In September of 1969 Stills was invited to a Hendrix session at the Record Plant in New York. Stills burst into the session with a song Joni Mitchell had recently composed, titled “Woodstock.” Joined by Hendrix and Buddy Miles, the trio recorded this version first–months before Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young released their popular rendition of Mitchell’s song. Stills would also contribute $20 Fine, an original song that featured Hendrix on multiple guitars, Mitchell on drums, Stills on organ and lead vocals and Duane Hitchings (Buddy Miles Express) on piano.

Another of the album’s unique band creations sees Jimi Hendrix and Johnny Winter on guitar, backed by Billy Cox and drummer Dallas Taylor of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. An excerpt of their rendition of Guitar Slim’s “Things I Used To Do” was initially heard as part of a 1990 nationally syndicated radio program and accompanying box set, but here it is presented in full, newly mixed by Eddie Kramer for Both Sides of The Sky. On “Georgia Blues,” Jimi is reunited with his old bandmate Lonnie Youngblood (vocals/sax) from his pre-fame days in Curtis Knight & The Squires. Briefly issued as part of the 2008 Martin Scorsese Presents the Blues series but out of print for nearly a decade, this special recording is once more available to Hendrix fans throughout the world on all audio formats.

Both Sides of the Sky was produced by Janie Hendrix, John McDermott, and Eddie Kramer. Kramer served as recording engineer on every Jimi Hendrix album made during the artist’s life. In order to preserve the integrity and continuity of the Hendrix legacy, this same team has produced every Jimi Hendrix audio and visual release since 1996.

Janie Hendrix, President and CEO of Experience Hendrix, L.L.C. commented, “We have a growing commitment to preserve the legacy of Jimi and also to continue to give the worldwide family of Jimi fans quality releases. That’s what “Both Sides of The Sky reflects…our ongoing commitment. In a deeper sense, it’s the keeping of a promise. Jimi and I once made a promise to each other. He said he would take care of me and I told him I would take care him. Through his music and our preservation of his work, my brother and I honor one another. We are now in our third decade of watching over Jimi’s creative works and our resolve to maintain the integrity of what he left us has only grown stronger with time.”

That is also the purpose for Eddie Kramer’s involvement and his devotion to the project. He remarked, “Jimi’s true home was the studio, that’s where the music and the magic happened. He loved everything about recording and it’s been my distinct pleasure and an honor to play a part in that process both then and now.”

All-Star Tribute Album ‘Strange Angels: In Flight With Elmore James’ Celebrates Blues Pioneer’s Centenary

0

On January 26th, Sylvan Songs Records will release ‘Strange Angels: In Flight With Elmore James,’ a tribute album to the undisputed “King of the Slide Guitar,” timed to what would have been his 100th birthday. The 13-track collection puts James’ legendary body of work in the hands of master interpreters from blues, soul, country, pop and Americana – including Tom Jones, Rodney Crowell, Bettye LaVette, Keb Mo, Warren Haynes, Billy Gibbons, Shelby Lynne & Allison Moorer + more. Today NPR Music premiered Jones’ wickedly scruffy and reverent take on “Done Somebody Wrong,” praising its “sexy, stormy, stop-time feel that still sounds as arresting in the right hands today as it did when blues giant Elmore James originated it.”

Produced by Marco Giovino (Robert Plant, Tom Jones, Norah Jones), with the help of Executive Producer Tom Siering, ‘Strange Angels’ puts iconic James tunes like “Shake Your Moneymaker,” “Look on Yonder Wall,” and “Person to Person” alongside songs known mainly by James aficionados. While James was famously a ‘Triple Threat’ – he excelled at songwriting, singing, and (of course) guitar – the songs on ‘Strange Angels’ aim to highlight his contributions to American music beyond riffs and an amp-at-11 intensity. He left a body of memorable, adaptable songs that can be renewed again and again in surprising ways.

‘Strange Angels’ was recorded in various locations across the country, including studios in Los Angeles, Nashville, Boston, and NYC. Although the musicians vary slightly from track-to-track, a bulk of the recording features house band Elmore’s Latest Broomdusters, comprised of Rick Holmstrom (guitar), Doug Lancio (slide guitar), Rudy Copeland (Hammond B3), Viktor Krauss (bass), Larry Taylor (bass) and Giovino himself (drums).

James died at age 45 in 1963 of a heart attack and was therefore never able to fully reap the rewards of the late-60’s blues revival, but his music is a crucial bridge between generations of blues artists – from Robert Johnson (who James played with) to Muddy Waters, Howlin Wolf and beyond. He pioneered full band electric performances as early as 1939, serving as the bedrock example for generations of musicians. His list of admirers is unparalleled – Richards, Hendrix, Harrison, Allman, Robertson, Vaughan, and on and on.

All of the profits for ‘Strange Angels’ will go to MusicCares, who provide resources and attention to human service issues that directly impact the health and welfare of the music community, and Edible Schoolyard NYC, who partner with NYC public schools to provide garden and kitchen classes integrated into the school day.

‘Strange Angels’ will be available for pre-order on December 15. Full tracklist below, more info here: https://elmorejamesstrangeangels.com

The mark of a great guitarist, says Keith Richards, is how well they can handle an acoustic guitar. The mark of a great song, I say, is how well it can be played on a toy instrument. Watch how Clay Shelburn and Zac Stokes play Stevie Ray Vaughan’s Pride and Joy on a $25 kids’ guitar at their local WalMart.

Steve Miller Announces 2018 Canadian Tour With Peter Frampton

0

Coming off an extraordinary 2017, Rock n’ Roll Hall of Famer Steve Miller is excited to announce his Spring 2018 tour of Canada. He will also be playing an additional two dates in the upper American Midwest. The full itinerary is below with more dates to be added soon.

Joining Miller and his band on this tour will be special guest Peter Frampton.

“2017 was an amazingly beautiful, creative and rewarding music experience for our band and our audience,” says Miller. “The band and production crew are working on creating an even better concert experience for 2018 and plan on wading even deeper into the musical waters. Peter Frampton and I enjoyed last summer. There is so much to explore and we are looking forward to seeing our friends in Canada and the States soon.”

Frampton adds, “Having had such a fantastic tour together last summer, Steve and I decided to keep going this year! Jamming together each night during Steve’s set is one of my favorite moments of the evening. Can’t wait to get back out there.”

In September, Miller produced and personally directed the curation and creative process for two new, career-spanning Steve Miller Band Ultimate Hits collections (Capitol/Ume). Ultimate Hits is available in a 1CD and digital edition featuring 22 essential Steve Miller Band tracks, including three previously unreleased rarities, and in an expanded 2CD and digital deluxe edition with 40 tracks, including the acclaimed band’s top hits, live tracks, and eight previously unreleased recordings from the studio and the stage. Both editions are also available on 180-gram vinyl in 2LP and 4LP deluxe packages.

Steve Miller was a mainstay of the San Francisco music scene that upended American culture in the late ’60s. With albums like Children of the Future, Sailor and Brave New World, Miller perfected a psychedelic blues sound that drew on the deepest sources of American roots music and simultaneously articulated a compelling vision of what music-and society-could be in the years to come.

Then, in the ’70s, Miller crafted a brand of rock ‘n’ roll music that was polished, exciting and irresistible, and that has dominated radio through today. Hit followed hit in an endless flow: “The Joker,” “Livin’ in the USA,” “Take the Money and Run,” “Rock’n Me,” “Fly Like an Eagle,” “Jet Airliner,” “Jungle Love,” and “Abracadabra” among them. To this day, these songs are instantly recognizable when they come on the radio-and impossible not to sing along with.

Running through Miller’s catalogue is a combination of virtuosity and song craft along with melodic vocals and signature guitar riffs. His parents were jazz aficionados — Les Paul was his godfather — so as a budding guitarist and singer, Miller absorbed valuable lessons from their musical tradition. When the family moved to Texas, Miller deepened his education in the blues, meeting T-Bone Walker and learning to sing and play listening to him and Jimmy Reed. Miller then moved to Chicago where he played with Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Buddy Guy and Paul Butterfield.

The Steve Miller Band has played to more than 20 million people in the last 20 years. In addition to touring with his band, Miller is also contributing his time to serving on the welcoming committee of the Department of Musical Instruments of New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art and as a board member of Jazz at Lincoln Center, where he curates and hosts shows at both institutions celebrating blues, jazz and early American music. From 2015 – 2017, Miller and guitar legend Jimmie Vaughan presented seven sold out shows at JALC: “Ma Rainey Meets Miles Davis,” “T Bone Walker – A Bridge From Blues to Jazz,” and, with along with harmonica virtuoso Charlie Musselwhite, “The Blues Triangle: Memphis, Texas and Chicago.”

The Steve Miller Band 2018 USA tour dates and further album release and compilation information will be announced early next year.
