‘Join Me in L.A.’: Star-Studded Warren Zevon Tribute Set for United Theater

0

The Wild Honey Foundation and the Zevon Family will present Join Me in L.A.: The Songs of Warren Zevon on Friday, October 24, 2025, at 8 p.m. at the United Theater, 929 S. Broadway, in Downtown Los Angeles. This special concert will benefit The Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization and The Ed Asner Family Center for the Autism Community.

To celebrate the enduring brilliance of Los Angeles legend Warren Zevon, the Jordan Summers and Nick Vincent–led Wild Honey Orchestra and Friends will perform more than 25 songs spanning every era of Zevon’s storied career. Hosted by acclaimed rock journalist and author Chris Morris, the evening will showcase Zevon’s gritty, colorful, and deeply moving catalog. The concert will feature a rotating ensemble of Los Angeles’ finest musicians from the past 50 years, including many who collaborated with Zevon himself.

The lineup continues to grow, with recent additions Dwight Yoakam and David Marks of the original Beach Boys. They join a stellar cast that includes Jackson Browne, Jorge Calderón, Jordan Zevon, Shooter Jennings, Fountains of Wayne, and Marshall Crenshaw. Other performers will include Leland Sklar, Rick Marotta, Bob Glaub, Matt Cartsonis, Dennis Diken of The Smithereens, Phil Cody, Billy Valentine, Susan Cowsill, Adam Weiner of Low Cut Connie, John Wesley Harding, Leslie Mendelson, Steve Wynn of The Dream Syndicate, Chris Stills, Inara George, and Eleni Mandell. Together, this extraordinary lineup will create an unforgettable and deeply emotional celebration of one of the greatest songwriters and performers of the last 50 years.

For musical co-director Jordan Summers, the project carries a deeply personal history. “When the P.E. coach called roll on the first day of 10th grade, two students answered ‘here’ to the name Jordan,” Summers recalls. “I was Jordan Summers, he was Jordan Zevon — Warren’s son. Despite my alphabetical advantage, we became instant friends and formed our first band a month later. Warren Zevon showed up to our first gig that year at Madame Wong’s. My best friend’s dad taught me ‘Werewolves of London’ over the phone. We went to his shows and recording sessions, and he even came to our rehearsals and once played my keyboard. My keyboard never forgave me for that. I was with Jordan through his father’s diagnosis, the day he passed, the funeral, and beyond. We’ve continued Warren’s legacy through performances supporting ADAO’s mesothelioma awareness efforts, where Jordan now serves as national spokesman. Getting to serve as musical director alongside Nick Vincent, another alphabetically disadvantaged soul with incomparable talent, is incredible. This show is both a tribute and a gathering of family, friends, and musicians, celebrating Warren just weeks before his long-awaited induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.”

The concert will support two vital organizations. The Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO), founded in 2004, is the largest independent asbestos victims’ group in the United States. It works to raise awareness of the dangers of asbestos exposure, provides a united voice for victims, and advocates nationally and internationally for a global asbestos ban. The Ed Asner Family Center (TEAFC), founded by Navah Paskowitz-Asner and Matthew Asner, offers comprehensive resources for individuals with special needs and their families. Inspired by their six children, three of whom are autistic, the Center fosters acceptance and enrichment through innovative programs, mental health services, and by proudly employing autistic self-advocates.

Since 1994, the Wild Honey Foundation has produced concerts, film screenings, fundraisers, and live stream events to benefit autism treatment, research, and members of the music community in need. A grassroots nonprofit, Wild Honey is dedicated to passing on the passion, creativity, and idealism of rock, rhythm & blues, folk, classical, and pop music to future generations. Over the years, the foundation has presented landmark events such as Big Star #1 Record with Jody Stephens, The Lovin’ Spoonful with John Sebastian, Steve Boone, and Joe Butler, Buffalo Springfield with Richie Furay, The Band with Garth Hudson, and Beach Boys tributes featuring Brian Wilson and Al Jardine. Notable participants in past shows include Jackson Browne, Lenny Kaye, Alex Chilton, The Bangles, Weird Al Yankovic, Micky Dolenz, Dave Alvin, Peter Buck and Mike Mills of R.E.M., Matthew Sweet, Carlene Carter, and many more.

Luke Combs Becomes Most RIAA-Certified Country Artist in History With 168 Million Units

0

Luke Combs has accomplished what many believed to be impossible, he has topped Garth Brooks and is now the highest RIAA certified country artist in history with 168 million units sold.

Of the achievement, Combs shares, “When my team first told me about this, my initial reaction was, ‘Are you sure? There’s no way.’ It was only 8 years ago that I got my first plaque for ‘Hurricane’ going gold. I knew then, without a doubt, I had the best fans in the world.

“The song had gone platinum before they could even give me the gold plaque. I’m super humbled by the fans’ belief in me and support of my music today and over the years. I know this does not happen without them.

“This achievement is more so theirs than it is mine. All I ever hoped and dreamed of from the beginning of this crazy ride was to make music that made people feel something and I can’t wait to continue making country music for the rest of my life.”

A Grand Ole Opry member and 11x CMA, 4x ACM, 6x Billboard Music Award-winner, Combs has recently collaborated with artists such as Post Malone (“Guy For That” + “Missin’ You Like This”), Bailey Zimmerman (“Backup Plan,” the 2025 SEC Network anthem), Jon Bellion (“WHY”) and Alex Warren (“Ordinary (Live at Lollapalooza)”), and partnered with Opry Entertainment Group to open Category 10; an entertainment complex in downtown Nashville.

Known for his electric shows, Combs recently made history as the first country artist ever to headline both Bonnaroo and Lollapalooza.

Combs is also set to headline Austin City Limits Music Festival this weekend, after topping the bill at all-genre festivals such as Newport Folk Festival and New Orleans JazzFest earlier this year. Combs also performed an unforgettable duet of “Fast Car” with Tracy Chapman at the 66th Grammy Awards and joined forces with Eric Church, Billy Strings and James Taylor to headline “Concert for Carolina,” a special benefit show that raised over $24.5 million for Hurricane Helene relief efforts.

Gary LeVox and Akon Drop Global Remix “Hold the Umbrella (Party Mix)”

0

Rascal Flatts frontman Gary LeVox and Grammy-nominated R&B/pop superstar Akon share “Hold the Umbrella (Party Mix)” via Big Machine Records. Following overwhelming fan response to the original track, this new release adds a fresh twist while complementing the global hit, and it’s set to take the celebration global.

“Hold The Umbrella (Party Mix)” builds on collaborations with two Latin music giants: De La Ghetto, a reggaeton star with more than 20 million monthly listeners and a string of Billboard hits, and Fernando & Sorocaba, Brazil’s pioneering sertanejo duo, Latin Grammy winners and arena-filling icons. Their contributions elevated “Hold The Umbrella” into a cross-cultural anthem.

Originally released on May 16th, “Hold The Umbrella” has quickly become an international anthem, garnering over three million streams worldwide, 3.2 million YouTube views, and 4.3 million TikTok views, with more than 134,000 engagements. Proving to be a true global vibe, the track continues to soar with Brazil shining as a powerhouse market, fueling 22 percent of Spotify activity, landing in four of the Top 10 cities, and delivering incredible fan energy. On TikTok, Brazilian creators have already generated 300K views and an astounding over 15 million reach, and the numbers are climbing.

The collaboration began when LeVox crossed paths with Akon on the nationally syndicated music television show The Song, presented by Hard Rock. Their instant creative chemistry sparked a unique blend of country, pop, and R&B, guided by the expertise of mega-producers Rudy Perez and Mickey Jack Cones. The music video was filmed at the beautiful Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida, and at the Big Machine 20th anniversary party on Broadway in front of the Hard Rock Cafe in Nashville, Tennessee.

Rhiannon Giddens Releases Intimate Mini-Documentary for ‘What Did the Blackbird Say to the Crow’

0

Continuing what Garden & Gun has called a “banner year,” Grammy and Pulitzer Prize winner Rhiannon Giddens today released a new mini-documentary with performance videos to accompany each song for What Did the Blackbird Say to the Crow. The film and video collection, available now on YouTube, offer an intimate look into the creation of her collaboration with fellow Carolina Chocolate Drops co-founder Justin Robinson, further illuminating their powerful tribute to the Black string band tradition of North Carolina.

The eighteen-track collection draws directly from that tradition, featuring Giddens on banjo and Robinson on fiddle as they play a mix of their favorite regional instrumentals and tunes with words. Many were learned from their late mentor, the legendary Piedmont musician Joe Thompson, and other musical heroes like Etta Baker and Evelyn Shaw. “‘Come to our porch, sit down, have some tea, and we’re just going to play some tunes,’” says Giddens. “We wanted to record that feeling.”

The new mini-documentary brings that intimate vision to life, taking viewers to the very porches and homesteads where the music was made. It captures the album’s unique soundscape, which was recorded outdoors and features the natural sounds of cicadas and birdsong. The experience is deepened by the new visual album, a playlist featuring one video for each of the eighteen tunes, made during the album’s recordings.

What Did the Blackbird Say to the Crow, released in April on Nonesuch Records, has been praised by Bandcamp as a “scorching album of revved-up traditionals” and heralded by Rolling Stone for cementing Giddens’ status as “a foundational influence for a generation of younger Black roots musicians.” It was followed by Giddens’ sold-out inaugural Biscuits & Banjos festival in Durham, NC, a weekend of music, panels, biscuits and dancing that featured a highly anticipated reunion of the Carolina Chocolate Drops. From there, she launched a tour with her new band, The Old-Time Revue, playing to packed houses at venues like the Hollywood Bowl with special guests Steve Martin and Ed Helms, and a rare reunion of Our Native Daughters (w/ Amythyst Kiah, Leyla McCalla and Allison Russell).

This flurry of creative work continues with several new projects. Giddens has co-authored a groundbreaking new songbook with music writer Kristina R. Gaddy, Go Back and Fetch It: Recovering Early Black Music in the Americas for Fiddle and Banjo. The book presents nineteen examples of early Black Atlantic music from the 1600s through the 1800s, making them accessible for today’s musicians and restoring the roots of Black music to the musical canon. Released earlier this month, the book has already become a #1 New Release in Ethnomusicology and is into its second pressing. Read more in a recent feature in the Oxford American: Giddens also recently performed with Paul Simon during The Juilliard School’s annual fall festival.

Looking ahead, Giddens will return to headline Carnegie Hall on May 8, 2026, as part of the “United In Sound: America at 250” series. She will be featured on an upcoming episode of the acclaimed PBS series Finding Your Roots with Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr.

Giddens will continue her extensive touring schedule into the spring, performing with her band and with the Silkroad Ensemble, where she is Artistic Director. For all tour dates, visit rhiannongiddens.com/tour

Rhiannon Giddens has made a singular, iconic career out of stretching her brand of folk music, with its miles-deep historical roots and contemporary sensibilities, into just about every field imaginable. A two-time GRAMMY Award–winning singer and instrumentalist, 2023 Pulitzer Prize winner, MacArthur “Genius” grant recipient, and composer of opera, ballet, and film, Giddens has centered her work around the mission of lifting up people whose contributions to American musical history have previously been overlooked or erased, and advocating for a more accurate understanding of the country’s musical origins through art. Her most recent solo release is 2023’s You’re the One, Giddens’ first album of all original songs; her banjo can be heard on the history-making song “Texas Hold ‘Em”; and she is the Artistic Director of Silkroad Ensemble. In addition to her musical pursuits, Giddens has published two children’s books featuring her lyrics, hosts the Aria Code podcast on WQXR, and has composed music for ballet and film, and two of her songs are featured in the hit video game Red Dead Redemption 2.

‘Bambi Meets Godzilla’ (1969): The Two-Minute Cult Classic That Stomped Into Animation History

0

Marv Newland’s Bambi Meets Godzilla remains one of animation’s greatest minimalist jokes. Created in 1969 as a student project, the black-and-white short opens with peaceful credits over grazing Bambi—until Godzilla’s foot abruptly crushes him, punctuated by The Beatles’ final chord from “A Day in the Life.” Hailed as a cult classic, the short toured U.S. theaters in the ’70s, appeared on VHS alongside Godzilla 1985, and was later preserved by the Academy Film Archive, cementing its legend as a two-minute triumph of absurd genius.

After teasing the song across Instagram and TikTok last month, elijah quickly stirred a wave of anticipation, with fans flooding the comments and urging for its release. “‘I Miss You’ is about holding on to hope when love feels uncertain—that late-night belief that if we just keep trying, we can find our way back,” he shares. “It’s emotional, but ultimately about faith in connection.”

Most remarkably, he has achieved it all as an independent artist.

With four JUNO Award nominations, multiple platinum and gold certifications, and five EPs released in just the past three years, elijah’s rise has been nothing short of extraordinary. He’s graced the cover of Esquire Singapore and been spotlighted in VMAN SEA, 1883 Magazine, and Vogue Hong Kong. Hear the 1984 Demo of Madonna’s “Like a Virgin,” Sung by Co-Writer Tom Kelly

0

Long before Madonna turned “Like a Virgin” into a global sensation, co-writer Tom Kelly recorded the original 1984 demo himself — singing the soon-to-be-classic in a silky falsetto. The early version captures the song’s skeleton: bright synths, sharp hooks, and Kelly’s playful delivery. It’s a rare behind-the-scenes moment that shows how one of pop’s most defining hits first came to life.
