Joseph Arthur To Perform “Redemption’s Son” In Its Entirety During Limited-Run Tour

0

Anyone who has followed the career of Joseph Arthur since he was personally discovered by Peter Gabriel back in 1997, knows Arthur has never been an artist to look back.

Over the course of his career to date, he’s released fourteen albums under his own name, eleven official EP’s and has been involved with several high profile side projects including Fistful Of Mercy (with Ben Harper & Dhani Harrison).

However, when it was brought to Arthur’s attention that 2017 marked the 15th Anniversary of one of his most beloved albums, Redemption’s Son, he decided he wanted to do something to honor the occasion.

Joseph Arthur will also be embarking on a limited run solo tour beginning on June 20th in Boston where he’ll play the album from beginning to end.

“I’ve never done this album from start to finish live,” Arthur remarked. “But Redemption’s Son was always a special record to me and my fans and this clearly seemed like the right time to do it. As I’ve been saying recently to my friends, listening to this album again after all of these years has re-inspired me which honestly was a complete surprise.”

On June 23rd, Real World Records, will re-issue the original album (with its original artwork) along with nine bonus tracks all of which have been previously unreleased. Redemption’s Son 15th Anniversary Edition will be available on 180-gram double LP, double CD, and digitally. It will be the first time the album is available on vinyl ever.

The nine previously unreleased songs now form a “lost album” which Arthur has named Morning Star.

“We decided to turn these tracks into their own album called ‘Morning Star’ rather than a collection of this that and the other thing,” Arthur remarked. “It’s a great feeling when the past burps up a gift. Things forgotten and submerged by the vortex of time which reveals its illusions thru a process such as this. First listens of old things are a lot like taking the wrapping paper off a gift. That excited smile comes over you (hopefully) and it’s kinda wonderful. But soon you get transported back to the time these things were new and then they become fresh elements to work with. No more a gift but a responsibility. Like if you got a dog for Christmas. What they say about a work of art being never finished but abandoned is accurate. And I learned here that you can essentially un-abandon them. We took these old things and we set out to make something current.”

Today In 1976, Bruce Springsteen Jumped The Wall At Graceland. Here’s His Side Of The Story

0

Today in 1976, Bruce Springsteen jumped the wall at Graceland. Here’s the real story as told by Bruce in the intro to the performance of ‘Follow That Dream‘ live on July 7, 1985.

‘And it took us out there in the middle of the night, and I remember we got outta the cab, and we stood there in front of those gates with the big guitar players on ’em. And when we looked up the driveway, in the second story of the house, you could see a light on, and I figured that Elvis has gotta be up readin’ or somethin’. And I told Steve, I said, ‘Steve, man, I gotta go check it out.’ And I jumped up over the wall and I started runnin’ up the driveway, which when I look back on it now was kind of a stupid thing to do because I hate it when people do it at my house.

‘Anyway, at the time, I was filled with the enthusiasm of youth and ran up the driveway and I got to the front door and I was just about to knock, and guards came out of the woods and they asked me what I wanted. And I said, ‘Is Elvis home?’ Then they said, ‘No, no, Elvis isn’t home, he’s in Lake Tahoe’. So, I started to tell ’em that I was a guitar player and that I had my own band, and that we played in town that night, and that I made some records. And I even told ’em I had my picture on the cover of Time and Newsweek. I had to pull out all the stops to try to make an impression, you know. I don’t think he believed me, though, ’cause he just kinda stood there noddin’ and then he took me by the arm and put me back out on the street with Steve.

‘Later on, I used to wonder what I would have said if I’d knocked on the door and if Elvis had come to the door because it wasn’t really Elvis I was goin’ to see. But, it was like he came along and whispered some dream in everybody’s ear, and somehow we all dreamed it. And maybe that’s why we’re here tonight, I don’t know.

‘I remember later, when a friend of mine called to tell me that he’d died, it was so hard to understand how somebody whose music came in and took away so many people’s loneliness and gave so many people a reason and a sense of the possibilities of living could have, in the end, died so tragically. And I guess when you’re alone, you ain’t nothin’ but alone.

Prince’s “Purple Rain” Is Coming In A Deluxe And Expanded Edition June 23

0

NPG Records and Warner Bros. Records announce the 2017 release of Prince’s Academy Award and GRAMMY Award-winning, RIAA diamond-certified masterpiece Purple Rain in new Deluxe and Deluxe – Expanded Edition formats on June 23, 2017.

A special fan pre-order goes live on Friday, April 28 and unlocks an instant grat download of the previously unreleased “Electric Intercourse.” Recorded in 1983 and heard only in its live incarnations, this marks the very first time fans will experience the studio version of this song.

The two-CD Purple Rain Deluxe set includes the official 2015 Paisley Park Remaster of the original tapes from the soundtrack, presenting an unheard vision of the album overseen by Prince himself before his untimely 2016 passing. The From The Vault & Unreleased disc boasts eleven gems unearthed from the heart of Prince’s storied vault. Beyond “Electric Intercourse,” the tracklist features much sought-after rarities such as 1984’s “Our Destiny / Roadhouse Garden,” the 1983 instrumental “Father’s Song” and more.

Six tracks that have never been released or distributed in the collector or bootleg community include: “Possessed” – the ’83 Prince solo version, never heard before; “Electric Intercourse”- the studio version not known to exist before it was discovered at Paisley; “Father’s Song” – a full, five plus minute version that prior to this fans could only find a minute and half snippet of in the movie; “We Can Fuck” – a track that has never circulated as the full, 10 minute version with these lyrics; and “Katrina’s Paper Dolls” – a finished master of the song, which has previously only circulated as a demo. Additionally, all of the material is taken from the source and mastered by Bernie Grundman, the mastering engineer who worked on the original album.

In addition to the Original Album (2015 Paisley Park Remaster) and From The Vault & Unreleased, the Purple Rain Deluxe – Expanded Edition presents a third disc of Single Edits & B-Sides, as well as the concert DVD Prince And The Revolution Live at the Carrier Dome, Syracuse, NY, March 30, 1985. With audio and video restored from the original production master tape, it offers an exclusive vignette into the passion and power of his legendary live performances during one of the artist’s most celebrated eras.

The DNA of Purple Rain can be felt throughout pop culture at large. It is a timeless body of work with an immortal resonance exemplified by smashes such as “Let’s Go Crazy,” “When Doves Cry,” “Darling Nikki,” the title track “Purple Rain” and more. 1984’s Purple Rain remains a high watermark for Prince, changing the worlds of film and music. In its initial run, the theatrical musical generated over $220 million worldwide at the box office against an estimated $7.2 million budget, while receiving the Academy Award® for “Best Original Song Score.” Minted Diamond by the RIAA for sales exceeding 13 million, the record stands out as the sixth best-selling soundtrack album in history, moving more than 22 million copies. Hailed by Vanity Fair as “the best soundtrack of all time,” Time Magazine placed it as the 15th greatest album ever. The album won two 1985 GRAMMY Awards® in the categories of “Best Rock Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal” and “Best Album of Original Score Written for a Motion Picture or Television Special.” Posthumously, it was honored as “Favorite Soundtrack” at the 2016 American Music Awards. Steve Earle To Release New Album “So You Wannabe An Outlaw” On June 16

0

Musician, songwriter, actor and author Steve Earle and his country rock band The Dukes will release So You Wannabe an Outlaw on June 16 on Warner Bros. Records. The album is available for pre-order today via all digital retailers. Those who pre-order will receive an instant download of the album track “Lookin’ For A Woman.”

So You Wannabe an Outlaw, Earle’s first album for Warner Bros. Records since 1997’s El Corazón, explores his country songwriting roots and features collaborations with Willie Nelson, Johnny Bush, and Miranda Lambert.

“There’s nothing ‘retro’ about this record,” Earle says. “I’m just acknowledging where I’m coming from.” So You Wannabe an Outlaw is the first recording he has made in Austin, TX. Earle has lived in New York City for the past decade. “Look, I’m always gonna be a Texan, no matter what I do,” he says. “And I’m always going to be somebody who learned their craft in Nashville. It’s who I am.”

So You Wannabe an Outlaw is an homage to outlaw music and is dedicated to the late Waylon Jennings. “I was out to unapologetically ‘channel’ Waylon as best as I could.” Earle says. “This record was all about me playing’ on the back pick-up of a ’66 Fender Telecaster on an entire record for the first time in my life. The vocal part of it is a little different. I certainly don’t sound like Waylon Jennings. I moved to Nashville in November of 1974, and right after that Willie Nelson’s Red Headed Stranger came out. I was around when Waylon was recording Dreaming My Dreams. Guitar Town (Earle’s 1986 chart-topping, Grammy Award-winning debut album) wound up being kind of my version of those types of songs,” Earle recalls.

Earle is backed on So You Wannabe an Outlaw by his long-time band The Dukes — guitarist Chris Masterson, fiddle player Eleanor Whitmore, bassist Kelly Looney, and new members drummer Brad Pemberton and pedal steel player Ricky Ray Jackson. The album was produced by Richard Bennett and recorded at Arlyn Studios in Austin.

A true Renaissance man, Earle has also become a novelist, a film, TV, and stage actor, playwright, author, record producer, and radio host over the course of his 30+ year career. He is currently appearing in the off-Broadway play Samara, for which Earle also wrote the score, that The New York Times called “exquisitely subliminal.” He is also in the process of writing his memoirs for future publication. Tune in to Steve Earle’s weekly radio show Hardcore Troubadour on SiriusXM’s Outlaw Country Channel.

This summer, Earle will lead his fourth annual songwriting intensive, Camp Copperhead, in upstate New York from June 26-30, 2017. The all-inclusive, four-day music vacation and fully immersive learning experience will take place at the Full Moon Resort in Big Indian, NY, about half an hour west of Woodstock. Primary instructor Earle will be joined this year by special guest instructors Jackie Greene and Dar Williams. Details can be found at http://camp-copperhead.com/.
