Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9 opens with a storm of energy, and in a recent performance by Philharmonia Baroque, that drama finds new form. The ensemble’s playing is paired with an animated bar-graph score by smalin, turning sound into motion. The result is both a performance and a visual meditation on one of music’s most enduring works.
Blue Rodeo Announce Record Store Day Exclusive ‘Songs Seldom Heard’ Vinyl Release
Following a year of milestone celebrations for their 40th anniversary, Canadian music legends Blue Rodeo have announced the release of Songs Seldom Heard, a special vinyl pressing featuring handpicked fan-favourites and deep cuts from the band’s storied catalogue. This highly personal collection offers a new way for fans to connect with the band’s extensive body of work, a testament to Blue Rodeo’s enduring love affair with Canadians through four decades of timeless music. Songs Seldom Heard will be released on November 28th as a Record Store Day Black Friday Exclusive, available only at local independent record stores in Canada.
In creating this collection, the band’s current lineup of Jim Cuddy, Greg Keelor, Bazil Donovan, Glenn Milchem, Mike Boguski, Colin Cripps, and Jimmy Bowskill each chose a track that rarely sees the spotlight, offering an intimate look into their personal connection to the music. The translucent emerald LP also features personal notes from every member, revealing hidden stories and little-known details that give a deeper look into both the music and the band itself. This collectible release is the perfect final note on a year of anniversary celebrations, which also included the release of Greatest Hits Vol. 2, their first-ever vinyl pressing of Greatest Hits Vol. 1, the award-winning documentary Blue Rodeo: Lost Together, and a commemorative Canada Post stamp.
Blue Rodeo’s journey began in 1984, when high school friends Jim Cuddy and Greg Keelor formed what they called a “psychedelic country band” in an era dominated by other musical trends. After facing challenges in New York, their return to a thriving Toronto inspired them to craft music that resonated with their true artistic vision. Joined by bandmates Bazil Donovan, Cleave Anderson, and Bobby Wiseman, Blue Rodeo quickly gained momentum, filling venues and ascending to the top of the charts. Their unwavering commitment to authenticity and a distinctive sound became the cornerstone of their enduring success in the Canadian music scene.
Now celebrating their 40th anniversary, Blue Rodeo has solidified its place as one of Canada’s most enduring and important bands. Their rise in the late 1980s and early 1990s helped spark a roots and country-rock music revival in Canada, influencing a new generation of musicians. The magic of Blue Rodeo’s sound stems from the distinct yet complementary songwriting styles of its lead singers, paired with the exceptional musicianship of its members, including original member Bazil Donovan, drummer Glenn Milchem, keyboardist Michael Boguski, guitarist Colin Cripps, and multi-instrumentalist Jimmy Bowskill. This unique blend of country, rock, and roots has created a body of work that stands as a benchmark in Canadian music, weaving deeply resonant, distinctly Canadian stories that have influenced countless songwriters and become woven into the fabric of the nation’s cultural identity. Blue Rodeo continues to prove their relevance and importance, maintaining an enduring love affair with Canadians through four decades of timeless music.

10 Great Late Night Albums to Drift, Dream, and Dwell In
When the world gets quiet, some albums come alive. They shimmer in dim light, slip between genres, and feel like they were written just for you at 1 a.m. Here are 10 perfect late-night soundtracks.
Alice in Chains – Jar of Flies
Proof that heaviness can live in softness. This acoustic detour from a grunge titan pairs aching harmonies with dark beauty, perfect for nights when sleep feels far away.
Cat Power – Moon Pix
Cat Power doesn’t just sing songs here—she murmurs spells. Sparse, vulnerable, and otherworldly, Moon Pix captures the tender chaos of sleepless nights.
Cocteau Twins – Heaven or Las Vegas
Like dreaming underwater. Elizabeth Fraser’s ethereal vocals float over shimmering guitars, leaving meaning up to you—because in the late hours, feeling matters more than words.
DJ Shadow – Endtroducing…..
The world’s first all-sample album still sounds futuristic. It’s the kind of record that makes your headphones feel like a portal into another dimension of grooves and moods.
Mazzy Star – So Tonight That I Might See
Dream-pop that sounds like starlight filtered through a haze. Hope Sandoval’s voice feels like it was meant to be heard when the clock strikes 2 a.m.
Massive Attack – Mezzanine
Trip-hop at its shadowy best. With cavernous bass, smoky beats, and vocals that seem to echo in from another room, Mezzanine feels like wandering neon-lit streets long after last call.
Miles Davis – In a Silent Way
Jazz, but hushed—like a whisper across water. Davis and his band stretch sound into something fluid, timeless, and quietly revolutionary, making silence feel as musical as the notes.
Portishead – Dummy
An album so nocturnal it might as well come with its own moonlight. Beth Gibbons’ haunted voice wraps around downtempo beats, giving late nights a cinematic, noir glow.
Steely Dan – Aja
Late nights sometimes call for sophistication. With its jazz-rock grooves and pristine production, Aja is the soundtrack of glowing cityscapes and half-finished cocktails.
Talk Talk – Spirit of Eden
A masterpiece of quiet intensity. Sparse, delicate, and drenched in atmosphere, Spirit of Eden feels less like an album and more like a deep breath at midnight, where every note lingers like candlelight in a dark room.

Grammy Winner Samara Joy Shares New Single “Three Little Words” Ahead of Global Tour
Five-time GRAMMY Award-winning jazz vocalist Samara Joy has released a single, “Three Little Words,” today. First penned by Harry Ruby and Bert Kalmar in 1930 and newly arranged by alto saxophonist David Mason, the track finds Joy revisiting one of the earliest standards she ever learned, breathing fresh life into the timeless classic with her signature warmth and once-in-a-generation voice. The track was recorded during the Portrait sessions.
“‘Three Little Words’ is one of the first standards I ever learned,” says Joy. “I first heard Sarah Vaughan’s recording from the album After Hours at the London House. Although it’s been performed by many musicians, I’m excited to add my interpretation to the list of incredible recordings of this song.”
Listen to “Three Little Words” HERE. Watch the visualizer HERE.
The Bronx-born jazz sensation continues her meteoric rise with a string of major accolades and career milestones. Her latest studio album Portrait offers a snapshot of Joy’s growth since her GRAMMY Best New Artist win, especially as a lyricist and band leader. NPR Music called it “the most jazz literate album of her career so far” and WRTI called it “an artistic breakthrough.” She recently made her stunning BBC proms debut, which The Times gave a 5-star review, plus her sold-out Carnegie Hall debut in her hometown of NYC. Joy’s Austin City Limits debut will air on PBS on November 1, 2025.
Earlier this year, Joy earned two more Grammys at the 67th Annual Awards, winning Best Jazz Vocal Album and Best Jazz Performance, bringing her total Grammy count to five. Shortly after, she was honored with her first NAACP Image Award, crowned Outstanding Jazz Album for Portrait. This Spring, she was a featured guest on the new season of Sesame Street and was featured in ELLE Magazine’s Women in Music issue, which you can read here. Additionally, Joy is featured on the new album from 9x Grammy winner Christian McBride, Without Further Ado, Vol. 1, out now.

Driven by infectious rhythm, “SUPAFLEE” is a ready-made anthem that echoes the golden era of New York’s gritty hip-hop scene. In the video, directed by Edgar Esteves, Joey takes over the Big Apple with a cameo appearance from producer Kirk Knight and recording artist Bri Steves as he commands the spotlight with style.
