The Dears’ Krief on the biggest lessons he’s learned in music

0

As former guitarist for The Dears, Patrick Krief made sizable contributions to shaping that band’s often dark and brooding sound. But working within another artist’s musical boundaries has never been enough for Krief, as evidenced by his latest solo project.

Bearing only his last name, Krief’s two new albums, Automanic Red andAutomanic Blue (out simultaneously Sept. 30 on Toronto indie label Culvert Music), contain 20 songs that capture the emotional extremes the Montreal native has lived over the past few years.

What are some of the biggest lessons you’ve learned as you’ve built your career, and what advice would you give?

I’ll answer this in point form:

Being talented is not enough.
Hard work does pay off. Tenacity does, too.
Be prolific. Know when to let go of something and that it will never be perfect. The closer something gets to “perfection” the more sterile and boring it will become.
Always offer to help musicians or artists you believe in. Don’t hoard your knowledge.
Decimate any sense of entitlement you have.
Treat people with respect in all situations.
Be loyal to the people who helped you early in your career.
Know that the people who work for you are also taking risks. Hear them out and be cooperative.
Respect your vision, and don’t let your mind (insecurities, goals/ ambitions etc) get in the way of inspiration.
Protect your assets. Define all the work you do. Anyone refusing to put something in writing for you is up to no good.
If you’re gonna goof around in a press photo shoot, know they will use THAT picture.
Nobody can ever care as much as you do. Understand that and respect it.
Don’t slag other artists.
Lead by example.
Don’t waste your time or money on “battle of the bands” type gigs.
Be self sufficient, learn as many skills as possible to advance your art and career.
Don’t blame others for your failures.
Understand how others have contributed to your success and credit/ reward them for it.
If you’re not loving it anymore, STOP.
As Bob Dylan says, “know your song well before you start singing” … and as Willie Nelson says, “you can’t make a record if you ain’t got nothing to say.”

Sony Just Created Two Pop Songs Using Artificial Intelligence. EVERYBODY PANIC!

0

Scientists at SONY CSL Research Laboratory have created the first-ever entire songs composed by Artificial Intelligence: “Daddy’s Car” and “Mister Shadow”.

The researchers have developed FlowMachines, a system that learns music styles from a huge database of songs. Exploiting unique combinations of style transfer, optimization and interaction techniques, FlowMachines composes novel songs in many styles.

French composer Benoît Carré arranged and produced Daddy’s Car, and wrote the lyrics as well.

“Mister Shadow” is composed in the style of American songwriters such as Irving Berlin, Duke Ellington, George Gershwin and Cole Porter. French composer Benoît Carré arranged and produced the songs, and wrote the lyrics.

The two songs are excerpts of albums composed by Artificial Intelligence to be released in 2017.

I, for one, welcome our new overlords of music and wish no harm.

Canadians, this announcement will be music to your ears! A free app is on the way that will give listeners from coast-to-coast access to nearly every style of music, news, talk, and entertainment content from close to 500 stations on any connected device, at any time of day, from anywhere.

Radioplayer, a UK based digital radio streaming service, has joined forces with Canada’s leading radio broadcasters to bring Canadians free, easily accessible digital radio on any connected device. Launching later this year, Radioplayer will allow Canadians immediate access to their favourite English and French entertainment, news, sports and talk radio stations powered by 15 Canadian radio broadcasters. Launch date to be announced in the coming weeks.

“I am extremely pleased that the majority of Canadian radio broadcasters have come together to bring this innovative offering to its listeners,” said Ian Lurie, Chief Operating Officer, Newcap Radio and Chair of the CEO Radio Council. “Radioplayer occupies a unique position in Europe, and its expansion into Canada represents a milestone for the platform in North America.”

“The way Canadians listen to radio is changing, and we’re changing with them,” said Julie Adam, Senior Vice President, Rogers Radio. “Radioplayer gives our listeners access to their favourite local stations and allows them to discover others across the country like never before. With access on mobile devices and desktop, turning the dial to your favourite stations has never been easier.”

Listeners will be able to access live and past radio broadcasts across the country through Radioplayer’s browser-player, and on connected devices through the iOS or Android app, including integrations with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Chromecast, and smartwatches. As the top-rated radio app in Europe, Radioplayer features the world’s best search and recommendation engine for radio, powered by the Radioplayer metadata platform.

“This is a very proud moment for Radioplayer and it will further strengthen the international ties between radio broadcasters,” said Michael Hill, Founder and Managing Director, Radioplayer UK. “Radio is in great shape, but we know we face challenges and opportunities in cars, smartphones, and among younger audiences. Joining the ever-growing Radioplayer family is a great way for broadcasters and countries to address these together.”

Radioplayer provides the trusted simplicity of radio with all the benefits of digital. Users can move between stations, set favourites, listen to on-demand content, find location based programming, see what is trending, and more.

Hidden 3.5mm Headphone Jack Found On The iPhone 7 Video Is a Hoax

0

Do not try this at home. Just don’t.

A video claiming that users can add a headphone socket to the iPhone 7, which only has a Lightning port, by drilling into the bottom of their phone has been watched almost 10 million times.

The prank video shows a man drilling a 3.5mm hole into the bottom left edge of the iPhone 7 held in a vice. It points to the row of small holes on the left side that replaced the headphone socket present on the iPhone 6S and claims that drilling into the second hole on the left reveals a hidden socket.

Once the hole has been drilled the video shows an iPhone 7 playing music, although the sound comes out of the speakers, not the white headphones now inserted in the DIY hole.

Midge Ure Returns To North America This Week And Announces More Dates For 2017

0

Grammy and Brit Award winning musician Midge Ure returns to North America this week, playing with a full band for the first time since the Retro Futura Tour in 2014. Playing along with Midge will be former Right the Stars drummer BC Taylor and L.A. based keyboard player Tony Solis “I have been fortunate enough to meet up with some brilliant American musicians over the last few years and will be working with a couple of them on this tour. Both are multi instrumentalists and will cover drums, bass and electronics” Richard Lloyd from Television will support on select dates.

This run of dates will be mosty East Coast with West Coast dates planned for early 2017. Last year saw Ure playing acoustic on the Fragile Troubadour Tour not only playing but traveling completely solo and recording the whole experience himself for a documentary released late last year. The film highlights the realities facing the modern touring musician. Ure explains how the idea came to be: “After I was asked to do a masterclass at Paul McCartney’s Liverpool Institute of Performing Arts I realised that talking about multi album record deals and world tours would be something most of the students would never experience so I set about doing the six week tour completely alone. No crew. No tour manager. No musicians. I wanted to show the reality of what they might face, if they pursue a career in the current music industry.”

Midge will be performing Ultravox, Visage and solo material as well as playing songs from his highly acclaimed album Fragile, released in 2014. Very much plugged in, this tour features Ure on electric guitar and synthesizer recalling the groundbreaking, innovative sound he is known for.

Ure is constantly in the studio when breaks in touring allows working on new material with hopes for a new full-length album to be done by late next year. He has also contributed a song for the accompanying album to the movie ‘Fly’ about the Olympic ski underdog Eddie the Eagle released in the UK and US earlier this year. The song Touching Hearts and Skies while contemporary is steeped in the essence of the early 80’s Ultravox/Visage sound.

Midge has also just appeared in a new highly acclaimed BBC TV show looking for ‘part time’ bands, exploring unsigned bands who perform just for the she joy of it. He travelled across Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales with a film crew choosing artists to perform at a concert in Manchester where the audience would select their favorite band. New Order’s Peter Hook and Soul to Soul’s Jazzy B covered other parts of the UK. Unlike other ‘talent shows’ there is no record deal, music equipment or blank cheques awarded. The prize is appearing on the show and the platform it gives them.

Another recent UK happening saw Midge reunite with some old friends…After meeting up with old Rich Kids bandmate ex Sex Pistol Glen Matlock at the prestigious Q Awards the pair decided to get together with drummer Rusty Egan and do a ‘one off’ show to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the birth of UK punk. The band performed the London show with Spandau Ballets Gary Kemp helping out on guitar.

He was also one of the principle creators of Live Aid and Live 8 along with Bob Geldof. Rick Astley Returns To Canada For First Show In 25 Years

0

Rick Astley, the iconic singer with one of music’s most distinctive voices, will release “50,” his first new album in a decade and his first official North American release since 1993’s “Body & Soul,” on October 7.

“50” already has Rick atop the charts again, debuting at #1 on the Official Album Chart in the UK in June, in a remarkable return for the artist.  Rick wrote, produced and performed all of the instruments on this new 12-track collection, the title a nod to Rick’s milestone age.  “50” finds Rick returning to his musical roots, with a deeply resonant voice that soars over driving soul, reflective pop and gospel influences.

Rick and his band will tour North America in October, with a Canadian show set for October 9 at the Phoenix in Toronto.

The first pieces of ‘50’ appeared in early 2015, as Rick started penning new songs and structuring them in his home studio.  With encouragement from old friends in the music industry he set forth on crafting this 12-song collection.  Lead single “Keep Singing,” which has over 2 million views on YouTube, is a bold opening salvo: a powerful anthem that the BBC says “gives younger artists like John Newman and Sam Smith a run for their money.”  The propulsive “This Old House” features a taut dance groove, a fuzzed bass line and quick, punctuated funk riffs.  “Angels On My Side” is another powerful ode complete with joyful call and response choruses.

Says Rick: “‘50’ marks both a new chapter in my journey as an artist, and a return to the music I first fell in love with. I could not be more excited to share it with my fans, and take these songs, that have been years in the making, out of the studio and onto the stage.”

Rick has left an indelible mark on pop-culture.  With over 40 million records sold, and a catalog of hits, Astley remains one of the most successful solo artists to have emerged from the United Kingdom, holding the distinction of being the first male solo artist to see his first eight singles reach the UK Top Ten.  Born in Lancashire, Rick was just 21 years old when “Never Gonna Give You Up” became the major hit of 1987.  The single hit number one in 16 countries and propelled his debut album ‘Whenever You Need Somebody’ to worldwide sales of 15 million.  Rick returned with new work in the early 2000’s and began touring again to acclaim and sold-out shows across the globe.

Rick has unveiled two music videos for songs from the album, “Keep Singing” and “Angels On My Side”:

Bob Dylan to Release New 1966 Live Recordings as 36-Disc Set (!!!)

0

Bob Dylan: The 1966 Live Recordings –a highly-collectible 36CD box set containing every known recording from the artist’s groundbreaking 1966 concert tours of the US, UK, Europe and Australia – will be released on Friday, November 11 by Columbia Records and Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment. The 1966 Live Recordings commemorates, in stunning sonic vérité, the 50th anniversary of the electrifying live performances that would forever change the sound and direction of rock and pop music around the world.

“While doing the archival research for The Cutting Edge 1965-1966: The Bootleg Series Vol. 12, last year’s box set of Dylan’s mid-60s studio sessions, we were continually struck by how great his 1966 live recordings really are,” said Adam Block, President, Legacy Recordings. “The intensity of Bob’s live performances and his fantastic delivery of these songs in concert add another insightful component in understanding and appreciating the musical revolution Bob Dylan ignited some 50 years ago.”

Meticulously researched, curated and restored for this extraordinary collection, Bob Dylan: The 1966 Live Recordings is drawn from three main audio sources: soundboards, CBS Records mobile recordings and audience tapes. With the exception of the Manchester concert (May 17, 1966) released as Bob Dylan Live 1966 – The Bootleg Series Vol. 4 (Columbia/Legacy) in 1998, a pair of songs appearing on the 1985 Biograph compilation and a smattering of others, the overwhelming majority of tracks and performances on Bob Dylan: The 1966 Live Recordings are previously unreleased in any format–official or bootlegged–and are being made available now for the very first time.

All the songs on The 1966 Live Recordings were written by Bob Dylan (vocal, guitar, piano, harmonica) with the sole exception of “Baby, Let Me Follow You Down,” a traditional song arranged by Bob Dylan for concert performance. Dylan is accompanied on these recordings by Robbie Robertson (guitar), Rick Danko (bass, backing vocals), Richard Manuel (piano), Garth Hudson (organ) and Mickey Jones (drums). (Sandy Konikoff plays drums on the White Plains and Pittsburgh shows only.)

Liner notes for Bob Dylan: The 1966 Live Recordings have been provided by Clinton Heylin, a consultant on the project and author of JUDAS!: From Forest Hills to the Free Trade Hall: A Historical View of Dylan’s Big Boo, the definitive written account of Dylan’s historic and pivotal 1965-66 world tours.

Each of the individual CDs in Bob Dylan: The 1966 Live Recordings is housed in a custom sleeve featuring stills from color film shot by D.A. Pennebaker, whose footage from Dylan’s 1965 and 1966 tours became the cinéma vérité classics Dont Look Back (1965) and Eat The Document(1966).

Columbia/Legacy will also release Bob Dylan’s performance at the Royal Albert Hall from May 26, 1966 (two days after the artist’s 25 birthday) as an album entitled The Real Royal Albert Hall 1966 Concert. For decades, Dylan’s performance in Manchester was incorrectly labeled “The Royal Albert Hall Concert.” Now, for the first time, the REAL Royal Albert Hall concert–originally recorded for a live album by CBS Records–is finally being released, mixed by Grammy-winning engineer Chris Shaw. The Real Royal Albert Hall 1966 Concert will be released as a 2CD and 12″ 2LP collection on November 25.

The performances on Bob Dylan: The 1966 Live Recordings put a fiery exclamation point on Dylan’s great mid-sixties creative epoch that produced–in an 18-month span–Bringing It All Back Home, Highway 61 Revisited and Blonde On Blonde, the trilogy of album masterpieces which secured Dylan’s reputation as a songwriter and performer of unprecedented depth, power and originality while significantly impacting the course of popular music and culture. These concert recordings from the same period document Dylan’s evolution as an on-stage phenomenon whose transformative vision saw no limits.

Bob Dylan: The 1966 Live Recordings is the ideal concert companion to The Cutting Edge 1965-1966: The Bootleg Series Vol. 12, released on Columbia/Legacy last November.
