I spent the last year making a body of work I’ve never been more proud of, and meeting Mike from The Table at exactly the right time has been creatively invigorating. It feels like I’m around the right people, with the right music, at the right time.”

Wave Of The Flood Releases Heartfelt Single “Afraid To Be Loved”

0

While Valentine’s Day weekend often leans into romance, contemporary folk artist Wave Of The Flood offers something more vulnerable with “Afraid To Be Loved.” The quietly devastating new single is the ninth installment in an ambitious run of twelve monthly releases, created in tribute to the storytelling power of the 45rpm single and timed to coincide with artist Lindsay Strachan’s 45th year.

Strachan calls the song her most personal to date. Reflecting on mid-life and modern dating, she wrote it for women who feel unseen in love stories. “I realised how many of my friends were quietly giving up on finding love,” she says. “These wonderful women weren’t being recognised in song. This one is for them. It may not change anything, but to be seen is to be loved.”

Musically, the track is marked by restraint and emotional clarity. For the first time in the series, John McCusker appears on both fiddle and accordion, lending fragile warmth to the arrangement. Produced by Kris Drever of Lau, who also contributes guitar, the recording features John McDonald on double bass and was captured by Garry Boyle at The Slate Room Studio, allowing the lyric to sit front and center.

“Afraid To Be Loved” is available now on all major streaming platforms, continuing a project that honors the immediacy and impact of the single as an art form.

‘Document And Eyewitness: An Intimate History Of Rough Trade’ By Neil Taylor Chronicles Indie Music’s Defining Label

0

‘Document And Eyewitness: An Intimate History Of Rough Trade’ by Neil Taylor offers a definitive inside account of one of the most influential independent record labels of the past fifty years. First published to critical acclaim, the book returns in a 2026 edition featuring new material from Taylor and a foreword by Morrissey.

Through the voices of Geoff Travis, Jarvis Cocker, Robert Wyatt, Green Gartside and many others, Taylor traces the story of Rough Trade from its early days championing artists such as Cabaret Voltaire, Kleenex and Swell Maps. The narrative moves through landmark releases by The Fall, The Smiths and Scritti Pollitti, documenting how the label helped shape the sound and ethos of independent music.

The book also examines the collapse of the independent collective and the eventual rebirth of Rough Trade at the turn of the century. By weaving together firsthand accounts and cultural context, Taylor captures the urgency and ambition that defined the label’s rise and enduring influence.

A former publisher who worked at Secker & Warburg, Weidenfeld & Nicolson and Sinclair-Stevenson, Taylor also compiled the legendary C86 mix tape during his time at NME. ‘Document And Eyewitness’ stands as an essential chronicle for anyone interested in the evolution of independent music and the artists who changed its course.

‘Have Mercy Baby: The Life Of Clyde McPhatter’ By Steve Bergsman Celebrates A Rock And Roll Pioneer

0

Have Mercy Baby: The Life of Clyde McPhatter by Steve Bergsman arrives February 18, 2026 as part of the American Made Music Series, offering a detailed portrait of one of early rock and roll’s most influential voices. McPhatter’s soaring tenor helped define the genre, from his breakthrough with The Dominoes to founding The Drifters and launching a solo career that reshaped rhythm and blues.

Born in North Carolina and steeped in gospel tradition, McPhatter brought spiritual fervor to the R&B stage. His vocals on “Sixty Minute Man” and “Have Mercy Baby” helped propel doo-wop into the mainstream. At Atlantic Records, he guided The Drifters to success with “Money Honey,” playing a central role in the label’s rise as a cornerstone of American R&B.

As a solo artist, McPhatter scored crossover hits including “A Lover’s Question” and “Treasure of Love,” expanding his influence even further. He remains one of the few artists inducted twice into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Yet behind the spotlight, he faced the pressures of fame, personal struggles and isolation.

Drawing on exclusive interviews with family members and close associates, Bergsman presents the most comprehensive account to date of McPhatter’s life and legacy. The book honors a pioneering artist whose voice laid the foundation for soul, rock and R&B, and whose influence continues to echo decades later.
