Van Morrison’s ‘Astral Weeks’ And ‘His Band And The Street Choir’ Gets Remastered With Bonus Tracks

0

Van Morrison’s early years at Warner Bros. Records were revisited in grand form in 2013 with the epic deluxe edition of Moondance packed with unreleased studio outtakes. Now the bookends to that classic album, Morrison’s legendary 1968 label debut ASTRAL WEEKS and 1970’s HIS BAND AND THE STREET CHOIR, get honored with expanded and remastered versions.

In addition to remastered audio, each album also features previously unreleased versions of several album tracks. These single-disc expanded and remastered versions will be released on October 30. Both albums will be available digitally as well.

Astral Weeks failed to make the charts when it was released in the fall of 1968. But 47 years later, the album has achieved a near-mythic status across generations of listeners who have “ventured in the slipstream” and fallen under the music’s spell. “Any best-of list is unthinkable — and worthless — without it,” writes Cory Frye in the album’s liner notes.

The four unreleased recordings that debut on this deluxe edition highlight the interplay between Morrison and the quartet that joined him in the studio – bassist Richard Davis, guitarist Jay Berliner, percussionist Warren Smith, Jr., and Modern Jazz Quartet drummer Connie Kay. These bonus tracks include the first take of “Beside You,” the full version of “Slim Slow Slider,” and a stripped back version of “Madame George” that emphasizes the vibraphone.

Following Moondance’s breakthrough success, His Band And The Street Choir arrived in November 1970. While Astral Weeks and Moondance contemplate the cosmos and love’s rich conundrums, Street Choir resonates with a purposefully loose ebullience on songs like the Top Ten hit “Domino,” “Blue Money,” and “Call Me Up In Dreamland.”

This remastered version of the album is expanded with five unreleased bonus tracks, including an early, raw take of “Give Me Kiss” without piano, horns or backing vocals. Morrison’s impressive falsetto gets a workout on Take 3 of “Gypsy Queen,” while the band turns up the funk on the greasy alternate version of “I’ve Been Working” that’s featured here.

In Celebration Of Underoos

0

Underoos were developed as a product idea in 1977 by an independent entrepreneur, Larry Weiss, who obtained licenses for the four major comic character groups (DC Comics, Marvel Comics, Hanna-Barbera, Archie Comics) which included Superman, Batman, Shazam, Wonder Woman, Supergirl, and Captain America. The product idea was first offered to Hanes, but was rejected. Scott Paper company pursued development, but ultimately decided to not market the product. Fruit of the Loom had been engaged as supplier of the blank underwear and another vendor engaged to apply transfers. Informed of Scott Paper Company’s decision to not market this novel product, Fruit of the Loom inquired if they would be permitted to market the product, now fully developed. Weiss agreed, and in 1978 Fruit of the Loom bought Underoos. The product was tested in three markets including the New York Metropolitan area, and then quickly spread to national distribution.

American Express Canada Renews Partnership with Live Nation Canada

0

I’ve long been a proponent of added value and extra service when it comes to shows and concerts. American Express has shown myself, and my family, several times over the course of their relationship with Live Nation Canada, they both well. Companies who reward their customers will always reap the benefits of loyality, and when the focus is put on your fans, they win, too.

Today, American Express Canada and Live Nation Canada announce the renewal of a multi-year deal with expanded benefits, offering Canadian Cardmembers access to more tickets and shows through its Front Of The Line program. The partnership solidifies American Express’ 26-year entertainment legacy in Canada, and reaffirms its commitment to bringing Cardmembers a breadth of entertainment experiences unlike any other brand.

“We’re excited to see our already strong partnership with Live Nation Canada, grow even stronger. Together, we’ll be able to bring even more entertainment access to Canadians for years to come,” says David Barnes, Vice President of Advertising and Communications, American Express Canada. “Since launching our access program 26 years ago, we’ve expanded our programs to cover live music, theatre, film and dining. The partnership with Live Nation is central to this, giving our Cardmembers advanced pre-sale access to hundreds of concerts across Canada featuring the biggest names in music.

The agreement will continue to solidify American Express’ position as a leading brand providing advanced ticket access to Canadians through its Front Of the Line program. As part of the Live Nation Canada partnership, the guaranteed number of concerts that American Express will be able to provide advanced ticket access to will more than double, along with great, quality seats through a reserved allotment of tickets once the public sale begins.  American Express will also continue to be a lead sponsor at the Molson Canadian Amphitheatre, with Cardmember benefits such as by-passing line-ups to the venue through its Front Of The LineEntrance, and access to the American Express Lounge onsite.

“We’re excited to build on our partnership in Canada and welcome more American Express Cardmembers to our concerts and events for years to come,” said John May, Live Nation Entertainment’s president – Ontario Region, EVP National Alliances. “American Express continues to be both a great sponsor and valuable marketing partner as we grow our own business and provide more world class music for Canadian fans.”

This announcement marks an exciting time for American Express’ access program, which has seen tremendous growth.  In fact, with advanced ticket access alone, American Express has seen a 132 per cent increase in pre-sales between 2012 and 2014, and is on track to have its biggest year in 2015 providing its Cardmembers with access to hundreds of thousands of tickets to the hottest events across the country.

Front Of The Line is itself part of a broader push into entertainment and experiences through American Express Invites that has seen the company partner with the best in Canadian entertainment. In addition to Live Nation Canada, American Express holds relationships with over 20 partners, like Mirvish Productions, Roy Thomson Hall/Massey Hall, Broadway Across Canada, eOne Entertainment, Taste of Toronto and more.  Together with these partners, Cardmembers have seen an increase in the amount of access and entertainment offerings available to them. In 2015 alone, Cardmembers have had access to concerts like One Direction, Janet Jackson, and Paul McCartney, theatre productions like, Kinky Boots, dining events like, Taste Of Toronto, and advanced film screenings, like Hunger Games.

Beyond ticket sales, American Express also provides Cardmembers an elevated experience when onsite at top entertainment venues, such as Princess of Wales Theatre, Massey Hall, and Roy Thomson Hall, where Cardmembers can gain entry into special lounges or bars to complete their night out.

Parker Kane makes debstep by using a McDonald’s straw

Dubstep is a genre of electronic dance music that originated in South London, England. It emerged in the late 1990s as a development within a lineage of related styles such as 2-step garage, broken beat, drum and bass, jungle, dub and reggae. In the UK the origins of the genre can be traced back to the growth of the Jamaican sound system party scene in the early 1980s. The music generally features syncopated drum and percussion patterns with bass lines that contain prominent sub bass frequencies, sometimes used by a guy with a McDonald’s straw.

Your computer keyboard turns into drumbeats with Typedrummer

Typedrummer is exactly what it sounds like: type letters into the window and hear them interpreted as rhythms. “qhkh,” for example, results in a standard 4/4 rock beat in the default sample set (q is a kickdrum, h a hat, and k a snare).  There are great examples on the thread at r/internetisbeautiful
