Editors Frontman Tom Smith Steps Into Solo Territory With New Single “Broken Time”

Nothing In The Dark Which Isn’t There In The Light,’ out now via Play It Again Sam. The song is the fourth release from the album, following “Lights Of New York City,” “Life Is For Living,” and “Leave.” Speaking about the track, Smith explains: “‘Broken Time’ is a song Iain and I wrote together in the studio, essentially from scratch. As like much of the record, love heals all ills and is the hope through harder times. A love that endures, an everlasting love, a love that has broken time.”

Best known as the voice of Editors, Smith turns inward on his solo debut, trading arena-sized urgency for an intimate, acoustic-led indie folk approach. Working closely with producer Iain Archer, the album focuses on emotional clarity, restraint, and human connection. From the minimalist ache of “Broken Time” to the cinematic sweep of “Life Is For Living,” the record explores memory, resilience, and fleeting intimacy, closing with “Saturday,” a quiet reflection that underlines Smith’s evolution as a songwriter stepping out on his own.

SOEN have released “Mercenary,” the crushing second single from their new studio album ‘Reliance,’ out now via Silver Lining Music. The band’s seventh full-length sees vocalist Joel Ekelof and drummer Martin Lopez continuing to push deeper into the contrasts that define SOEN’s sound, moving fluidly between light and dark, heaviness and restraint. Honesty sits at the core of the album’s writing, where emotional gravity and raw power coexist without compromise. That balance is especially present on “Mercenary,” which confronts inherited violence, betrayal, and the personal cost of belief. “‘Mercenary’ is about the violence we inherit, which then sees hatred seeping into lives—and life—which in turn shapes generations,” explains Ekelof. Lopez adds, “It also addresses betrayal, about how that can see us ‘crowning vultures into kings.’” Ekelof continues, “At its heart, ‘Mercenary’ speaks to the cost of belief,” before Lopez concludes that “musically, it carries the essence of SOEN – heavy yet melodic and built on power and precision.”

Revis Return With Long-Awaited Sophomore Album ‘Killing Time’

After more than two decades and several false starts, Revis have finally released their long-awaited sophomore album, “Killing Time,” via Lo-Fi Music. Produced by Justin Holman and Robert Davis, with additional production from Davis and consultation from legendary producer Michael Beinhorn, the album marks Revis’ first full-length follow-up to their early-2000s breakthrough. Previously released tracks include “Cool Blacktop,” “Stardust (All Around Us),” and the title track “Killing Time,” a lyrical reflection on the band’s long and uneven journey. The focus track “Honey Castle” expands on those themes, with Holman describing it as an abstract meditation on desire, illusion, and the limits of happiness.

Formed by teenage friends Justin Holman and Robert Davis in Carbondale, Illinois, Revis rose quickly after relocating to Los Angeles, signing with Epic Records and releasing their debut album “Places for Breathing.” The record topped Billboard’s Heatseekers chart and produced radio hits including “Caught in the Rain” and “Seven,” before years of lineup changes and stalled momentum followed. Aside from scattered singles and a brief comeback attempt in 2010, the band remained largely quiet until reuniting with drummer David Piribauer to release the EP “Bottles of Lightning.” That reunion ultimately led to “Killing Time,” a record shaped by persistence, restraint, and hard-earned clarity, and widely seen as the strongest work of the band’s career.

The track was originally recorded during Don Dokken’s earliest professional studio sessions and remained largely unavailable outside of a limited vinyl release tied to the archival collection ‘The Lost Songs: 1978-1981’.

“In a few blocks from my house there was a vintage music store called Drake’s Music,” Don Dokken recalls, explaining how the recording came together after befriending its owner, Drake Levin. Levin arranged late-night studio time and brought in drummer Bill Lordan and bassist Rusty Allen, both of whom were playing with Robin Trower at the time. Together, they recorded “Hard Rock Woman” and “Broken Heart,” capturing an early snapshot of the sound and ambition that would later define Dokken’s legacy.

Symphonic Metal Project Eternal Recurrence Introduces Chamber Driven Sound With Debut Single “Precious Stones”

ETERNAL RECURRENCE has released “Precious Stones,” the first single from its upcoming self-titled debut EP, Eternal Recurrence, due later this year. The project blends modern metal with a chamber music approach to orchestration, offering a different perspective on symphonic metal. Instead of large orchestras or fully sampled arrangements, ETERNAL RECURRENCE centers its sound on real musicians performing real orchestral instruments, allowing nuance, texture, and human imperfection to remain front and center.

Shaped in part by the financial realities of independent production, the band draws inspiration from the chamber music tradition. Chamber ensembles are written for smaller groups and more intimate settings, a philosophy that defines the project’s sound. All material on Eternal Recurrence was composed specifically for a chamber string ensemble featuring German Dmitriev on violins, Steven Schumann on cellos, Maciek Szczyciński on double bass, and C. Alex Luke on piano, combined with aggressive guitars, technical leads, and modern metal drumming.

“Precious Stones” was the first song written for the EP, originally conceived during the COVID pandemic as a straightforward metal track with keyboards and synths. After the project’s direction shifted toward a chamber string ensemble, the song was reworked with new string arrangements that play a more supportive role than on other tracks. The single features guest vocals from Mordian (DIAMORTE, SHIELD OF WINGS) on alto cleans and James Dorton (BLACK CROWN INITIATE, DIAMORTE, NE OBLIVISCARIS) on harsh vocals. Lyrically, the song stands apart from the rest of the EP, with words written by Jake Thiele, reflecting on division, politicization, and the ways modern life can drain joy from everyday existence.
