Wings Take Flight Again With Definitive Antholog

0

Wings is the ultimate anthology of the band that defined the sound of the 1970s. Personally overseen by Paul McCartney, Wings is available in an impressive array of beautifully designed formats – all including the timeless international hits “Band on the Run, “Live and Let Die,” “Jet” and “Let ‘Em In” – songs that still feature in Paul McCartney’s live shows to this day. The new versions will drop on November 7th via UMe.

The project arrives in a remarkable variety of formats, including the stunning 3 LP Limited Edition Color Vinyl collection, a lovingly curated time capsule of imagery and music for the mega Wings fan, through to the single CD and single LP versions for those embarking on their first flights with Wings and/or just beginning a deeper dive into this stage of Paul’s unparalleled career.

All physical formats come with a booklet including an introduction from Paul. 3 LP and 2 CD editions include an expanded 32-page booklet featuring photographs, artwork, paintings, trivia, and information about the band. The artwork for Wings was overseen alongside Paul by Aubrey ‘Po’ Powell of Hipgnosis — the iconic design studio that worked with Paul for seven Wings albums, including Band on the Run, Venus and Mars, Wings Over America, and Wings Greatest. The expanded booklet includes extensive album-by-album notes on the artwork written by Po, with additional editorial by Pete Paphides, and features original artwork by Humphrey Ocean – who first worked with Wings on some of the artwork for Wings at the Speed of Sound before being invited by Paul and Linda on tour in 1976 as their artist in residence — rendering behind-the-scenes sketches of the band.

The Blu-ray version of Wings is the first time Wings songs are available on a physical format in Dolby Atmos.

This collection charts the story of a band as it became one of the biggest-selling acts of all time. With US No. 1 singles including “My Love,” “Band on the Run,” “Listen to What the Man Said,” “Silly Love Songs,” and “With a Little Luck” (featured on all Wings formats) and over 22 million albums sold around the world, Wings defied expectations. “Mull of Kintyre” became the first single in the UK to sell more than two million copies – overtaking “She Loves You” to become the biggest-selling single of all time in the UK.

At their core, Wings was a great rock band, but as Wings amply demonstrates, they were so much more: The sprawling compilation showcases the band’s versatility with a staggering tracklisting that spans pop, folk, soul, reggae and experimentation with songs like “C Moon,” “Goodnight Tonight,” “Arrow Through Me,”“Wild Life” and more.

Following the breakup of The Beatles, McCartney found himself adrift, having parted ways with his lifelong collaborators and closest friends. He missed the camaraderie, the creative spark that came from being in a band. Faced with the daunting choice of walking away from music or starting over, Wings was born.

Formed in 1971 with his wife Linda McCartney and guitarist Denny Laine, Wings quickly became Paul’s vehicle for personal healing and artistic rebirth. Over a decade, the band released seven studio albums and charted an ambitious, unpredictable journey that blended musical experimentation with global success. Rather than rely on past glories, Wings forged their own identity, often in the face of critical skepticism and frequent lineup changes. Their story is one of triumph, resilience, and a deep belief in the power of reinvention.

Rhett Miller Finds Redemption and Renewal on “All For You”

0

Rhett Miller released “All For You,” the second song to be released from his forthcoming solo album ‘A lifetime of riding by night’ that arrives on October 10 via ATO Records.

Co-written by Jesse Valenzuela of Gin Blossoms, the song is a poignant reflection of redemption and gratitude that took on an even deeper meaning during the recording which took place just days before a high risk vocal cord surgery: Had a dream and it came true, me and you and them / In a house filled with sun and loved ones and friends / It was worth all the work it took to wind up in this place / And I’ll try to make it better and better every single day / All for you. The album is now available for pre-order on vinyl and CD.

Tomorrow, Miller’s band Old 97’s will be honored with a lifetime achievement award at the 24th annual Americana Honors & Awards in Nashville, TN. Last year, Old 97’s celebrated their 30th anniversary with the release of the critically-acclaimed album American Primitive.

About the single, Miller explains, “My buddy Jesse Valenzuela brought me the idea for the song, a guitar hook and a lyric hook, so he had done the trickiest part. When I was fleshing out the lyrics, I imagined that it would be a song for Jesse’s album rather than something I’d be recording. Ironically, this level of remove gave me permission to get a little more personal and sensitive than I might otherwise have done. As soon as it was finished, I loved the song and knew that someday I would record it. And it tickles me that I finally got to work with my super-talented friend Jesse.”

“It’s simply a joy to work with my compadre Rhett Miller,” Valenzuela adds. “He is a gifted, insightful lyricist. I’m a longtime fan of his songs and I really love ‘All for you.’ I believe it’s a special song that seems to resonate with people and I’m so proud that it’s found a spot on Rhett’s beautiful new record.”

“All For You” follows the release of “Come As You Are,” that features Turnpike Troubadours’ Evan Felker, who also co-wrote the song, on background vocals. The song was praised by Rolling Stone, BrooklynVegan, Dallas Observer, and Whiskey Riff, who proclaimed, “[Rhett Miller] has managed to stay relevant and inspire generations of artists for well over 30 years. [He] is the type of musician that is likely one of your favorite artist’s favorite artists.”

A lifetime of riding by night was recorded primarily at Dave’s Room in Los Angeles and marks Miller’s first time enlisting his Old 97’s bandmate Murry Hammond as a producer since his solo debut album Mythologies (a 1989 LP created when he was 17-years-old). Threaded with his lived-in reflection on mortality and love in all forms, the album contains some of Miller’s most unguarded material yet-an achievement he attributes to revelations gleaned through his recent work in teaching songwriting at The New School in Manhattan, as well as the eclectic lineup of co-writers including Turnpike Troubadours frontman Evan Felker, Caitlin Rose, Nicole Atkins, Jesse Valenzuela of Gin Blossoms, and Ben Greenman.

Miller will kick off a national album release on October 9 in Worcester, MA that will make stops in Los Angeles, Seattle, New York, Dallas, St. Paul and many more.

A lifetime of riding by night tracklist:
1) A Little Song (Prologue)
2) All For You

Chiodos Announce Second Leg of ‘All’s Well That Ends Well’ 20th Anniversary Tour

0

Emo/post-hardcore trailblazers Chiodos are keeping the celebration going. Following the nearly sold-out success of the first leg of their “All’s Well That Ends Well 20th anniversary tour” in April, the band has announced the second leg of dates, kicking off November 6 in Grand Rapids, MI and wrapping December 20 in Riverside, CA.

Released on July 26, 2005, All’s Well That Ends Well became a defining record for the mid-2000s emo/post-hardcore scene, launching Chiodos into the spotlight with its dynamic blend of soaring melodies, aggressive instrumentation, and poetic storytelling. The debut charted on the Billboard Top 200 (#164), landed at #11 on the Independent Albums chart, and climbed to #3 on Heatseekers – cementing its place as a genre classic that still resonates nearly two decades later.

To mark the milestone, the band re-recorded and reissued the album, out now via Sumerian Records, giving longtime fans and new listeners a fresh way to experience the songs. The first leg of the anniversary tour in April brought packed rooms and high-energy sing-alongs from coast to coast, reminding everyone why Chiodos has remained such an influential force.

The upcoming second leg will feature full-album performances of All’s Well That Ends Well alongside fan favourites from across the band’s discography. More than a trip down memory lane, these shows offer a glimpse into Chiodos’ next chapter, with hints at new music on the horizon.

Juliana Hatfield Previews 21st Solo Album ‘Lightning Might Strike’ with New Single “Scratchers”

0

Juliana Hatfield is testing her luck with the poppy, guitar driven single “Scratchers” out today along with a video directed by Paige Applin. It’s the first release from her 21st solo album Lightning Might Strike, available December 12th via American Laundromat Records.

The song can be seen as a testament to endurance (“I’ve always had a feeling/that I was born to win”) and the album itself, recorded mostly in Juliana’s house, by Juliana, was two years in the making.

This riff switches, in “Scratchers”, from major to minor and back again, creating a pendulating mood shift, alternately optimistic and gloomy-doomy, befitting the song’s split between the rose-tinted glasses of the gambler (you can’t win if you don’t play!) and the harsh reality of the subtext (you can’t win, you’ll never win).

The album, Lightning Might Strike, captures a period of major change. “It was a difficult time for me when I started working on this album. I had just uprooted myself from the city apartment building where I’d been living for twenty years to a house in a more rural town two hours away where I knew no one when one of my best friends died (‘Ashes’), and then my dog died (‘Constant Companion’), then my mother was diagnosed with esophagus cancer (‘Scratchers’). I was pretty depressed for a solid year (‘Long Slow Nervous Breakdown’) and was lost and very lonely (‘Harmonizing With Myself’). I was thinking about fate and circumstance and about how I’d ended up where I was (‘Where Are You Now’).”

Joining Juliana (guitar, keyboards, vocals, percussion, bass) on this album journey were Chris Anzalone (drums), Ed Valauskas (bass) and Pat DiCenso (mix/mastering).

Lightning Might Strike is available for pre-order along with limited edition vinyl and bundles. It will be available on American Laundromat Records on December 12, 2025.

Joe Ray McDonald Shares New Single “Rodeo Son” Ahead of Forthcoming Album ‘Cowboy Cake’

0

After sharing “First Rains of May,” the stunning initial preview of his forthcoming album Cowboy Cake, rising Canadian alt-country singer/songwriter Joe Ray McDonald today makes another powerful statement with his new single “Rodeo Son.”

As with its predecessor, “Rodeo Son” showcases McDonald’s distinctive voice and recording approach, which could be best described as a homage to classic ’70s outlaw country artists in melding melody and top-notch musicianship with darkly evocative lyrics.

McDonald says, “‘Rodeo Son’ came out of thinking on a high plains drifter, Clint Eastwood type of character, roaming around doing his thing. The more I got to thinking on it and fleshing it out, I realized I was writing about my dad and my brother.”

Based in the Ottawa Valley near Canada’s capital city, McDonald has been turning heads since “First Rains of May” began drawing comparisons to the work of Townes Van Zandt and Tyler Childers. Moreover, McDonald’s flat-picking guitar skills and overall production aesthetic on the song set the bar high for the rest of Cowboy Cake, a standard that “Rodeo Son” lives up to, if not exceeds.

As with all of Cowboy Cake, McDonald meticulously constructed the track at his home studio with bassist Chris Pond and drummer Jose Garcia, before sending it to Nashville where Colter Wall band member Patrick Lyons overdubbed pedal steel and dobro. Further overdubs of Rhodes piano, harmony vocals, mandolin and fiddle completed the process.

McDonald then spent three months mixing Cowboy Cake himself, a choice stemming from a passion to learn all aspects of his craft, as well as a passion to hit all the right emotional notes, much like his favourite film directors Akira Kurosawa and Sergio Leone. “I am always trying to be a better songwriter, guitarist and human being,” Joe Ray says. “I really believe that who you are as a person has a huge impact on how you develop on your instrument and as a writer.”

Like flowers on a finely tailored cowboy shirt, Joe Ray McDonald’s music adds beautiful details to a durable form, raising country music songwriting to a higher artistic level. And the fact that he does it so effortlessly is perhaps the best reason to believe he will one day be mentioned in the same breath as his heroes and primary inspirations.

Canada has never had a shortage of great singer/songwriters, and as the alt-country genre has evolved, we continue to be at the forefront. Joe Ray McDonald is poised to become the latest to join that elite group of artists.

The Mommyheads Announce 17th Album ‘No Quietus,’ A Vibrant Meditation on Mortality and Hope

0

The Mommyheads will release their 17th album, No Quietus, on Friday, November 7, 2025. The title, Latin for “No Death,” sets the stage for a record that doesn’t lean on cliche character narratives or overblown rock operatics, yet carries a unifying theme that pulses through every rhythm and strum. Death is the unlikely protagonist of this sonic journey-though the music is far more inviting than one might expect. At its heart, No Quietus shows how deceptively simple songs can be both captivating and endlessly listenable: subtly mind-bending, yet irresistibly hummable in true Mommyheads fashion. The first single from the album is its title track, “No Quietus.” An official music video created by band frontman Adam Elk is streaming now.

“The video for ‘No Quietus’ captures the core message of the new album: the fear of losing the most important person in your life, and the relentless role of time in that struggle,” says Elk. “Clocks appear in nearly every scene, underscoring the helplessness we feel when a loved one’s life hangs in the balance. Each fleeting minute becomes both a torment and a reminder of how desperately we search for control – and for solace – in the face of something that feels so unstoppable.”

“Triumph and Crash” barrels in like an epic funeral march, reflecting on the empire’s collapse through the eyes of a fly. In “Black Veins,” the frailty of the narrator comes into sharp relief: “Take these black veins and turn them blue, I gave all my oxygen to you” – a piercing observation of the co-dependency woven into love. The title track marks a turning point, as the protagonist faces the possible loss of the most important person in his life. “I’m Your Apocalypse” finds the band at their most rebellious, layering jagged synths over a propulsive 7/8 groove. “Always Reaching” contrasts philosophical lyrics with danceable energy, perfectly balanced within its 4:40 runtime. Side one closes on a lush, late-’70s Bee Gees-inspired groove, inviting us to imagine how religion fits into this sweeping story.

Side two deepens the meditation with songs like “Finally Free,” “Strong,” and “It’s Only Life.” Here, the band confronts the universal struggle with mortality, offering a musical document that examines death from many angles- society, loved ones, ego, relationships, faith, and personal identity. Much like a prizefighter probing for weakness, No Quietus explores each facet with precision and compassion.

The result is a vibrant, genre-blending collage that feels both timeless and urgent. Paradoxically, this record about death may be the Mommyheads’ most hopeful work yet. In their long and fruitful career, they’ve never made an album about life’s end feel so alive.
