Don Was and The Pan-Detroit Ensemble Announce Debut Album ‘Groove in the Face of Adversity’ and Fall Tour

0

Six-time Grammy winner, acclaimed producer, and Blue Note Records President Don Was is set for the release of his debut album with The Pan-Detroit Ensemble, a “nine-piece soul jazz group from Detroit,” as he describes it. Groove in the Face of Adversity is due October 10 via Mack Avenue Records. Pre-save/pre-order the album HERE.

In anticipation of the release, the band is sharing the track “Midnight Marauders;” listen/share HERE.

Born and raised in Detroit, Was returns to his roots with The Pan-Detroit Ensemble. Drawing on the wide-ranging musical contributions of his storied career, the record brings listeners back to where it all began: the Motor City. “We’re the Pan-Detroit Ensemble and we are on a mission to promulgate the music of our hometown,” says Was.

Groove in the Face of Adversity blends steamy jazz, juke joint blues, and loose-limbed funk in a thoughtful sonic cross-pollination that reflects both Was’ deep roots and sensibilities. The album’s title draws from a formative moment in his youth: stuck in the car and in a sour mood while his mother ran errands, he turned on the radio and stumbled upon Joe Henderson’s “Mode for Joe.” The music changed everything.

“There was a nonverbal message that came through the music,” Was recalls. “‘Don, you got to groove in the face of adversity,’ meaning just relax and chill and just go with the flow with your mom.” It’s a musical philosophy Was has employed ever since.

In support of the album, Was and The Pan-Detroit Ensemble will embark on a fall tour, kicking off October 8 in Traverse City, MI. The run includes stops in Louisville, Lansing, and more, with a special Detroit performance on October 11 serving as the official album release show. The band will also appear at the immersive Golden Road Festival in Buford, GA. Select dates, including Traverse City and Evanston, will include two performances at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. Tickets are on sale now HERE. Extensive touring will follow in early 2026, with additional dates to be announced soon.

The tour will feature songs from the band’s forthcoming album alongside a full performance of The Grateful Dead’s Blues For Allah in celebration of that album’s 50th anniversary.

Was has spent five decades as a producer, bassist, composer, and the longtime head of Blue Note Records. He has produced landmark albums for The Rolling Stones, Bonnie Raitt, Bob Dylan, John Mayer, Willie Nelson, and more, with combined sales approaching 100 million records. His accolades include a BAFTA Award for Best Original Score (Backbeat), an Emmy for Music Direction (The Beatles: The Night That Changed America), and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Americana Music Association.

Was has led the Don Was Detroit All-Star Revue for more than 15 years, co-hosts The Don Was Motor City Playlist on Detroit NPR station WDET, and hosts Dinner with Don Was on SiriusXM. Since 2018, he has toured extensively with Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros, a group he co-founded with Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir.

Claudia Valentina Reinvents a Pop Classic With Fearless New Single ‘Candy’

0

Claudia Valentina returns with a fearless new single, “Candy,” released today via Electric Feel. The track reinvents the unforgettable hook from Kelis’ “Milkshake”, channeling it into a slow-burning, self-assured anthem that blends dark-pop production with raw, unfiltered attitude.

The rising singer-songwriter shares, “I like to release music the same way I make it, what I feel like at the time ‘cause a bad bitch can be many things in one day and ‘Candy’ is like a taste of that other side. Ear candy moments, ‘cause boring pop gives me the ick.” With its magnetic vocals and hypnotic beat, “Candy” is both an homage and a reinvention, asserting Claudia’s place in the new guard of pop innovators.

The accompanying visual takes Claudia out of the studio and into the wild—literally. Set in a sprawling field and along dusty backroads, the music video features Claudia and an all-female crew racing in vintage cars and on ATVs. Equal parts cinematic and rebellious, it’s a powerful visual complement to the track’s provocative message. “The video for ‘Candy’ I’ve had on my mood board for around 6 years, and for it to finally come to life feels super exciting,” Claudia reveals.

“Candy” follows her recent singles “Cry Them Dry,” “When I’m High,” and “Diamonds On My Teeth,” all set to appear on her upcoming EP. With this latest release, Claudia cements her reputation for unpredictable, uncompromising pop.

Ana Luna Unveils Emotional Alt-Pop Single ‘Dance in a Trance’

0

Los Angeles-based artist Ana Luna has unveiled her latest single “Dance in a Trance,” a poignant and immersive track that blends emotional storytelling with haunting sonics. The release builds on her genre-defying catalog and follows singles like “Oxytocin” and “Why Not,” continuing her evolution as a rising voice in alt-pop.

“Dance in a Trance” is built on dreamlike melodies and introspective lyrics, delivering a snapshot of heartbreak that feels personal yet universally resonant. “A caged romance, I danced in a trance,” she sings—one of many lyrical moments that reveal the song’s delicate balance between vulnerability and empowerment.

Ana explains: “People will interpret my songs however they want, but this one wasn’t about making anyone the bad guy—it was very much about me. I’d run into my ex and he wouldn’t even look at me… The line ‘a caged romance’ came from something he once said to a friend of ours about feeling ‘caged’ or trapped, which ironically, is how I felt too.”

With roots in Ukraine and Paris and now thriving in LA, Ana Luna draws from a rich emotional and cultural palette. Her music blurs the lines between dream pop, alt-rock, and soul-searching ballads, often using songwriting as therapy. “Dance in a Trance” offers a lens into memory, identity, and personal healing—a recurring theme as she works toward her debut album.

11 Music Videos That Should Win Oscars

If Oscars were handed out for music videos, the nominees would look very different from the usual Hollywood roll call. Some videos are more than just promos—they’re tiny movies, packed with storylines, drama, and unforgettable visuals. Here are 11 that would absolutely deserve a golden statue.

Bob Dylan – “Subterranean Homesick Blues”
Shot in a back alley with cue cards flipping in sync with the lyrics, Dylan made a groundbreaking video without even singing. It’s raw, clever, and basically invented the lyric video decades before YouTube did.

The Beatles – “Penny Lane”
Colorful, surreal, and full of quick-cut whimsy, this clip feels like a short film from the heart of psychedelia. It captures the dreamlike magic of the era and makes a simple street feel like a wonderland.

David Bowie – “Ashes to Ashes”
With its eerie imagery and surreal costumes, this video looks like a moving art exhibit. Bowie brought high-concept storytelling to MTV before MTV even knew what to do with it.

Bruce Springsteen – “I’m on Fire”
Sparse, moody, and cinematic, the Boss plays a lonely mechanic longing for connection. It’s a quiet performance with the pacing of an indie film, and it leaves just enough unsaid to stay haunting.

Madonna – “Like a Prayer”
A controversial mix of religious iconography, social commentary, and fiery imagery, this video hit harder than many feature films. It proved a pop video could stir conversation far beyond the charts.

Michael Jackson – “Thriller”
This is basically a horror short film with music, choreography, and more zombies than a drive-in double feature. Directed by John Landis, it blurred the line between video and cinema forever.

Prince – “When Doves Cry”
Dramatic lighting, purple haze, and an unforgettable bathtub scene—it’s pure Prince. The visual intensity matches the emotional storm of the song, creating a video that feels operatic in scope.

Queen – “Bohemian Rhapsody”
That stark, angular spotlight shot of the band singing in unison? Pure cinema. It turned a complex rock suite into one of the most iconic visuals in music history.

R.E.M. – “Losing My Religion”
Borrowing from Renaissance paintings and surrealist film, this video is as rich in symbolism as it is in emotion. Every frame feels crafted like a scene in a grand epic.

Sinead O’Connor – “Nothing Compares 2 U”
One close-up, one tear, and the world stood still. Stripped of artifice, this video proves that the most powerful cinema can come from a single face and a raw performance.

Taylor Swift – “All Too Well: The Short Film”
Blurring the line between video and featurette, it runs like a heart-wrenching indie drama. With narrative arcs, strong acting, and cinematic direction, it could slip right into Sundance.

What Booking Agents Look for When Choosing New Artists

So you’ve got songs, maybe even a band name your friends don’t roll their eyes at, and you’re wondering what makes a booking agent actually take notice. The truth? It’s not a mysterious checklist tucked away in some industry handbook. It’s a mix of gut feeling, a few key signals, and whether or not you can keep people from scrolling on their phones when you’re onstage.

First thing: sound like yourself. If an agent listens to your track and immediately knows it’s you without glancing at the playlist, you’re doing something right. Originality doesn’t mean reinventing music, it just means bringing something into the room that feels fresh, like “oh, that could only be them.”

Then there’s the live show. Agents watch how you hold a crowd, not just how well you hit the high notes. Do people lean forward instead of heading for the bar? Do they cheer like they’re in on a secret? That’s gold.

Offstage, it matters that you’re easy to work with. If you answer emails, show up on time, and don’t make soundcheck an Olympic sport, you’re already ahead of half the game. It shows you’re ready for bigger opportunities without someone needing to chase you down.

Yes, image and audience play into it too. Having some kind of story, vibe, or even just a decent Instagram presence makes it easier to sell your name on a poster. Agents want to know people will care enough to buy tickets—and if you’ve already got folks cheering you on, that’s even better.

Finally, the long game is what seals it. Can you keep writing, keep growing, keep surprising people? Agents look for artists who aren’t just here for a quick flash but can actually build momentum year after year.

At the end of the day, signing on is about spotting that spark and seeing where it might go. Get those pieces right, and you’re not just another act—you’re a partnership waiting to happen.

Sting’s Isolated Vocals For The Police’s “Roxanne”

“Roxanne,” released by The Police in 1978, is one of the band’s signature songs, written by Sting about a man falling in love with a prostitute. Reissued in 1979, it climbed to #12 on the U.K. charts and later earned a place in Rolling Stone’s “500 Greatest Songs of All Time.” Its legacy grew as it opened the band’s 2007 Grammy performance and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2008.
