Five Finger Death Punch Mark 20 Years with Re-Recorded ‘Best Of – Volume 1’

0

Multi-platinum hard rock powerhouse Five Finger Death Punch are celebrating their 20th anniversary with the release of “Best Of – Volume 1”, a collection of re-recorded versions of their most iconic chart-topping songs. This move comes in response to the recent sale of the band’s original master recordings by their former label, an action made without their knowledge or the opportunity to reclaim their own work.

Founding guitarist Zoltan Bathory says: “We would have loved to have a shot at reclaiming our masters, or at least to be involved in the transaction but we found out after the fact. Surprised, but not surprised. These kinds of behind closed doors deals have become far too common in the music industry.

“Labels buy, sell or trade artist’s work without their knowledge or consent, reducing them to soulless commodities. But life is a chess game so when this happened to Taylor Swift, she responded by re-recording her catalog. After that respectably bold move, her fans switched to streaming the new version out of protest and loyalty. We have one of the most hardcore and loyal fan bases on the planet so I know our fans will do the same.”

Coincidentally, this year marks the band’s 20th anniversary, and they were already thinking about how to commemorate two decades worth of music, so when this curveball was thrown, they chose to turn it into something positive and powerful. The idea of a remix or remaster wasn’t enough, so the band created a completely re-recorded 2025 edition to honor the songs and the fans who have made them matter by being with Five Finger Death Punch every step of the way.

Five Finger Death Punch emphasized their respect for the original recordings and the people they made them with but are also excited to breathe new life into fan favorites like “The Bleeding” “Bad Company” and “Wrong Side of Heaven” and to share this new chapter with fans around the world.

The first offering from the 20th Anniversary Edition, in a poetic coincidence happens to be titled “I Refuse,” a fan favorite that was always meant to be a single. This reimagined, re-recorded version of “I Refuse,” now features guest vocals from Maria Brink of In This Moment.

Kings of Thrash Unleash Fierce New Original Single “Lockdown”

0

Kings of Thrash, the acclaimed union of Megadeth alumni David Ellefson (bass) and Jeff Young (guitar), plus Chaz Leon (vocals, guitar) and Dead Groove/BulletBoys drummer Fred Aching, with special guest (and fellow ex-Megadeth-er) Chris Poland, return to the fray with a stunning new single, and a dramatic shift in attitude, too.

The band, after all, is most renowned as the sonic spark that detonated one of the recent past’s most incendiary live albums, the mighty The Mega Years reinvention of Megadeth’s first and three studio LPs, Killing Is My Business…And Business Is Good (1985) and So Far, So Good…So What? (1988), plus highlights from the intervening Peace Sells…But Who’s Buying! (1986). The albums, in other words, upon which the entire thrash metal genre was built and defined in the first place.

As guitarist Young put it at the outset of the continent-devouring Mega Years tour, “The mission here is to bring a connection of goodwill through the music, with a collaboration of musicians and friends in our community. Our thrash tribe casts a wide net to give people hope in a time when they’re looking for something positive and uplifting. What better way than to do that than through the music which has become the soundtrack to our lives.”

Released today, the new single “Lockdown,” however, sees the Kings of Thrash step out of the shadow of their old band, while both maintaining, and even amplifying all the qualities that made those albums so wildly influential.

A brand new Kings of Thrash original, “‘Lockdown’ has it all,” confirms guitarist Poland. “Great riffs. A super catchy chorus. And a rhythm section that is locked up tight”! And I’m honored to have been invited to be a part of it.

Folk Veteran Mason Jennings Releases Intimate New Album ‘Magnifier’

0

After more than two decades as one of modern folk’s most authentic voices, Mason Jennings returns with Magnifier, his 20th studio album, out now via Loosegroove Records. The album’s first single and video, “Castles,” is out now offering a powerful introduction to one of Jennings’ most stripped-back and emotionally resonant works to date.

Recorded solo at his lake house in Minnesota with just vocals, acoustic guitar, piano, kick drum, and snare, Magnifier finds Jennings at his most minimal and honest. These eight songs meditate on love, change, grief, and hope, crafted with the kind of quiet intensity and lyrical precision that has become his hallmark.

“A song is like a boat on the water,” says Jennings. “You’re trying to make it float with as few pieces as possible. If you do it right, it can be very healing.”

Jennings’ long career has been defined by that philosophy. Born in Honolulu, raised in Pittsburgh, and launched into national recognition from Minneapolis in the late ’90s, his debut set the stage for a string of revered releases that balanced poetic introspection with melodic simplicity. Over the years, his work has drawn comparisons to Nick Drake and Tom Waits, yet his voice—emotionally direct, deeply human—remains unmistakably his own.

Standout tracks on Magnifier include:

“Castles” – A tribute to the imaginative inner worlds children create to cope with hardship. Fingerpicked guitar and gentle piano create a hushed, hopeful space.

“Joy in the Face of It All” – A defiant celebration of hope and unity in uncertain times. It’s a call to choose love, community, and resilience.

“Don’t Change” – A tender love song for his wife and also his 3-year-old son. A song about holding on to what’s important in life’s passing moments—a meditation on staying true to oneself amid life’s inevitable shifts.

“Blood Red Sun” – A dark, cinematic track blending Jennings’ love for heavy metal and Westerns— an understated story-song of a man on the run, heavy with implication and mood.

Magnifier follows Jennings’ recent wave of creativity, including his collaboration with Stone Gossard in the genre-bending band Painted Shield and his 2024 release Holy Dive. With Magnifier, Jennings circles back to his acoustic roots, crafting what may be his most personal and affecting album yet.
