0

Three-time Grammy winner Lucinda Williams, one of the most vital voices in American songwriting, has teamed with Laura McCarthy, co-founder of Brownies and Lakeside Lounge-two former mainstays of the East Village-and Americana artist and East Village bar manager Kelley Swindall, to open Lucinda’s, a new Southern country bar, located at 169 Avenue A in New York City (the old Brownie’s spot).

For the private opening on Tuesday, July 29, Lucinda and her band will perform a special set at 10pm, with Laura Cantrell at 9pm, with DJ Moonshine and DJ Prison Rodeo. The night will be livestreamed 9pm ET on SiriusXM Outlaw Country. Lucinda’s will be open to the public on July 31.

A place in New York City where Lucinda can hang her hat, the bar and venue will feature photography from Danny Clinch, artwork by Jon Langford and Michael Worthington (some will be for sale), and a tribute to the late, great Jeremy Tepper, Lucinda’s friend and the impresario behind Outlaw Country. There will be weekly bluegrass picking nights, songwriter open mics, live country music on Friday nights, live band country karaoke on Saturday nights (live music on the weekends will be 8:30 – 11:30pm), old-time southern drinks, boiled peanuts, a wine list chosen by Lucinda, and plenty of surprises. Just like she sings it, there’s no good, there’s no bad, in this dirty little joint.

“We are really excited to have a down-home, honky tonk country bar in the East Village,” says McCarthy. “There is some kind of magic for music in that location. I have felt it since we opened Brownies in the late 80s. It’s exciting to do this with Lucinda and the team.”

Lucinda Williams latest albums are Stories from a Rock N Roll Heart and Lucinda Williams Sings the Beatles from Abbey Road. Her acclaimed memoir Don’t Tell Anybody the Secrets I Told You is out now.

Devendra Banhart Announces ‘Cripple Crow’ 20th Anniversary Reissue with Demos, Live Cuts, and Unreleased Tracks

0

Devendra Banhart has announced the 20 year anniversary reissue of his beloved album Cripple Crow. Out on September 12, the Cripple Crow 20th Anniversary Deluxe Edition marks the first release on Banhart’s own label Heavy Flowers, distributed by Secretly Distribution. Along with the announcement, Banhart has released a demo of “I Feel Just Like A Child,” an early version of the fan favorite from the original Cripple Crow release.

The Cripple Crow 20th Anniversary album reissue includes a third bonus LP featuring “The Seventies” (a never-before-released recording from the Cripple Crow sessions), “Shame” (the long out of print B-side to “Long Haired Child”), five previously unreleased demos and two live recordings. It also includes expanded artwork and liner notes written by Banhart himself. See below for the full deluxe edition tracklisting.

Of the reissue, Devendra Banhart says: “Cripple Crow! equal parts gag and pride! What a trip! What a ride! What a time! It’s all a bit embarrassing and yet, it was such a beautifully free time of uncensored experimentation and loving camaraderie that I can’t help but be proud to share this reissue with a bunch of new stuff I can’t believe didn’t get burnt in my ‘burning my archives’ phase! Thank you to everyone for sharing bits of pics and ephemera ya had flopping around!”

Originally released on September 12, 2005 Cripple Crow was met with international critical acclaim. Pitchfork praised it as an “undoubtedly impressive, vastly singular… inspired listening experience” and Rolling Stone called it “terrific,” specifically noting Banhart’s “impressionistic lyrics and a quavery croon.” Meanwhile, NME lauded Cripple Crow as a “cut-and-come-again treat” and The Guardian gave the project a rave four-star review.

A day before the release of Cripple Crow 20th Anniversary Deluxe Edition (September 11), Banhart will embark on a limited run of performances in the Northeast – making stops in Woodstock, Brooklyn, Boston & more – where he will be supported by folk singer Kath Bloom. Magdalene Unleashes Pop Power with “Hot Shot” and Fosse-Inspired Dance Video

0

Madgalene today shares a new track “Hot Shot,” with a Flashdance-meets-Britney-meets-Bob Fosse-inspired video. Magdalene is the closest thing we’ve got to the performance of pop drama since Madonna marathons on 1980s and 90s MTV.

While the previous single “Lucky Girl” paints the dancer as God and men as her followers, and “Sensitive” leans into the perpetual sacrifice that all women give, with consistent imagery of crucifixion, “Hot Shot” is here to cause a proverbial bar fight, or a black swan-esque rivalry set in a paparazzi-laden desert, with the video acting as a bombastic take on the classic pop star in the dance studio trope. Inspired by Bob Fosse, Madonna, and Flashdance, this video is Magdalene’s cathartic release, as she dances out her woes and heartbreak.

Of the track, Magdalene says, “Hot Shot is a diss track in its purest form. A party anthem about getting hurt so badly that the only thing to do about it is hit the dance floor and try and forget. Pulling from artists like Britney Spears, Kylie Minogue and Madonna the song is as much confessional as it is POP.”

It’s hard to grasp that Magdalene has only released a few singles (see “Radio,” “Delusional”), as the polish on the production lends itself to a much more storied catalogue. That’s the magic of Magdalene – you get all of the juice from the Encyclopedia of Pop steeped deep within her music. The blueprint is so clearly envisioned and executed, but with a fresh-squeezed finish. Inspired by the indisputable greats like Madonna (“she is Mother”), Dirrty Xtina, Blackout-era Britney, and the peak days of naughty noughties club-pop, Magdalene places just as much weight in her appreciation for her own mother, who raised her to don True Religion while bumping Portishead and No Doubt in a vintage Escalade.

In this artistic iteration and under previous names, Magdalene has performed and toured with Current Joys, Surf Curse, Brutus VIII, and has played shows with Momma and just wrapped up shows at SXSW where she shared stages with CDSM, Catcher, and more, while more recently sharing the stage with NYC’s pop prince Jack Powers. The bridge that she is building between the underground NY rock scene to the grandeur of pop history is clearly indicative of the future

Magdalene doesn’t go by that name by any accident; not only did her own mother name her after Mary Magdalene, but as an artist she is highly attuned to the depth of meaning. Given that there’s often very little return on all the sacrifices a musician makes to entertain and provide a delusional escape, she’s got no time to do anything but make that sacrifice for pop stardom. She’s put it all on the line, and there’s so much more to come.

Good Trees River Band Drops Southern Rock Jam “Blowin’ Smoke” Ahead of New Album and Fall Tour

0

Good Trees River Band (GTRB) is thrilled to share their new single, “Blowin’ Smoke,” which hit all major streaming platforms on July 25. As the title track from their upcoming album Blowin’ Smoke, due out October 17, this tune is a blend of southern rock and vintage blues—channeling the raw vibe of GTRB’s road-tested chemistry. The lyrics represent a cynical hot take against spouting nonsense and staying in your rut. With Allman Brothers–inspired riffs, the inclusion of a moe.-flavored cowbell, and a gritty harmonica section, “Blowin’ Smoke” is a simultaneously laid-back and punchy anthem that sets the tone for the band’s return to their jam-inspired roots.

Building to the release of Blowin’ Smoke in October, the quartet will share two more singles in the coming months—“Russian Dragon” (August 22), featuring Jim Loughlin from moe. on percussion, and “The Candle” (September 19). The band’s third album—guided by the Americana-charged production style of Dan Horne of Circles Around the Sun—was cut live over two days at Mojo Studios in the White Mountains of New Hampshire and bottles GTRB’s live stage energy. “We recorded everything live, which plays to our strengths,” says drummer/vocalist Evan Valentine. The introspective depth of “The Candle” and funky edge of “Russian Dragon” serve to paint a vivid canvas of the band’s post-COVID journey. From the rolling hills of Asheville to the coastal stretches of Maine—it’s a record that’s as much about the miles traveled as the music and brotherhood made.

“Blowin’ Smoke” (single) was crafted in an afternoon by guitarist Danny Circharo and percussionist/vocalist Gavin Gebhardt and captures the band’s love for rock in some of its many glorious forms—classic, southern, psych, and jam. “It was a fun, smooth, and telling experience about our ability to collaborate,” Danny says, reflecting on how Gavin’s push for an Allman Brothers vibe sparked their first co-write. Bassist Ned Brady calls the track’s rhythm “catchy and rockin’,” with a chorus that nods to moe.’s “Okayalright.” For Gavin, it’s a personal milestone: “It’s the first song we’ve put out where I’m playing harmonica.” The single is a snapshot of GTRB’s evolving sound, blending their collective individual skills and influences into a groove that feels both simple yet tastefully layered with complexity.

GTRB, newly signed to Nashville-based Gitcha Records, is gearing up for a fall tour to bring Blowin’ Smoke to life. Stay tuned for more details in the coming weeks.

Listen to “Blowin’ Smoke” now on your preferred streaming platform.

Good Trees River Band (GTRB) is comprised of Evan Valentine (drums/vocals), Danny Circharo (guitar), Gavin Gebhardt (vocals/percussion), and Ned Brady (bass). What started as a loose and fun jam band sound in their beginning years after forming in 2015, GTRB has recently evolved into a heavier, psychedelic sound with socially critical lyrics and nods to classic Southern Rock. With their members scattered across New England and Florida, the band is often on extensive road tours, where their live performances showcase their ever-broadening stylistic landscape. In the studio, GTRB brings in a wide spectrum of ideas and sounds while collaborating with well-renowned producers and musicians with their own distinct sounds, including Dan Horne of Circles Around the Sun, Jim Loughlin of moe., and Ben McLeod of All Them Witches. Each GTRB album is in a world of its own, and the band’s grassroots gusto has bolstered their growing popularity heading into their second decade.
