Motion City Soundtrack Announces First Album in a Decade, ‘The Same Old Wasted Wonderful World’

0

Motion City Soundtrack make a triumphant return with the announcement of their new album, ‘The Same Old Wasted Wonderful World’ due for release on September 19 via Epitaph Records.

For their first collection of music since 2015’s ‘Panic Stations’, the band doubles down on their signature sound with renewed energy and purpose, recapturing the magic of their early days while showcasing their growth and maturity after a decade-long hiatus.

Over twenty years removed from their 2003 debut, the quintet’s signature cocktail of neurotic charm and hook-laden pop-punk is still potent on lead single “She Is Afraid”. Conceived during the making of ‘Panic Stations’, its bendy guitar licks and quirky vocal delivery sound at once familiar and newly vital.

Frontman Justin Pierre enthuses: “As soon as I heard Josh’s bonkers guitar part, I flipped out. I don’t know how he does it. I’d been listening to a lot of Del the Funky Homosapien around the time of writing the lyrics, and I think his influence comes out a bit in the verses (but hopefully in a way that doesn’t sound totally derivative). I think the rest of the tune owes a debt of gratitude to That Dog for sure. Matt mentioned he hears some Faith No More in the tune, which is always a good sign, and now I hear it too. Hell, I learned how to be weird on stage watching Mike Patton on the You Fat Bastards (Live At The Britton Academy London) videocassette as a teenager in ’90/’91. I wore that sh*t out.” Check out the song and its accompanying Severance inspired music video below.

“Don’t Call It a Comeback” isn’t just the name of a song off Motion City Soundtrack’s 2003 debut I Am The Movie, it’s also an apt way to summarize the band’s mission statement. During their initial run from 1997 to 2016, the Minneapolis-based group released six celebrated albums, toured the world countless times and achieved gold status for their hit single “Everything Is Alright.”

After taking a three year hiatus, the band-vocalist/guitarist Justin Pierre, guitarist Joshua Cain, bassist Matt Taylor, keyboardist Jesse Johnson and drummer Tony Thaxton-started performing live again in 2019, but even the most optimistic fans didn’t necessarily expect a follow-up to 2015’s Panic Stations. “When we started conceptualizing the idea for this record, I was thinking about what we loved about doing this originally,” Cain explains. The result is The Same Old Wasted Wonderful World, an album that sees the band transmuting the last decade of life experiences into the most catchy songs of their career.

To record the album, the band reunited with Sean O’Keefe (Fall Out Boy, Plain White T’s) at the legendary Chicago studio, Electrical Audio. Featuring cameos from Fall Out Boy’s Patrick Stump (who also co-wrote the song “Particle Physics”), Citizen’s Mat Kerekes and Deanna Belos of Sincere Engineer, the album sees the band reclaiming their crown as punk rock’s most accessible-and infectious-acts. However, the most impressive aspect of The Same Old Wasted Wonderful World is the fact that instead of relying solely on nostalgia, Motion City Soundtrack continue to experiment outside their comfort zone. “ It’s a very interesting thing to feel like we made the most important record of our career this late in the game,” Johnson explains.

“I think that if you look at a lot of our past records, it’s about ‘What’s wrong? What am I not getting right? Why do I feel f***ing crazy? Why can’t I figure this out’… and I figured it out,” Pierre admits. “It’s almost like I felt I didn’t have an identity [in the past] and now by working through the hard stuff, I know who I am.” With that sense of self-discovery mirrored by the music, when the final track fades out it may be the conclusion of the album, but in reality it’s the beginning of another chapter for Motion City Soundtrack’s collective journey.

The Same Old Wasted Wonderful World Tracklisting:
1. Some Wear a Dark Heart

3. Particle Physics (feat. Patrick Stump)
4. You Know Who the F*** We Are

Grateful Dead’s ‘The Grateful Dead Movie’ Returns To Cinemas And IMAX

0

Grateful Dead fans worldwide are invited to come together to celebrate the 60th Anniversary and the enduring legacy of the legendary band, as Rhino Entertainment and Trafalgar Releasing announce the highly anticipated 2025 edition of “Meet-Up At The Movies.” This year, the annual theatrical event brings the Dead’s eponymous concert film, The Grateful Dead Movie, to cinemas and IMAX in select territories around the world beginning August 14 for a limited time only.

Tickets for “Meet-Up At The Movies” are on sale from June 26 at 6 a.m. PT / 9 a.m. ET / 2 p.m. BST at MeetUpAtTheMovies.com. Visit the event website to sign up for more information and ticketing details for cinemas and IMAX screens.

With the 2025 “Meet-Up,” Dead Heads can anticipate a truly special celebration. Adding an exhilarating new dimension this year, The Grateful Dead Movie will grace IMAX screens in the US and select territories worldwide for the first time. IMAX has meticulously remastered this larger-than-life presentation for stunning sound and picture, creating an immersive and powerful experience that truly makes this a must-see event. Before the August 14 international release date, advanced previews in 60 IMAX North American locations will be held on August 13.

This fan-favorite cult classic film captures the band (Jerry Garcia, Bobby Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann, Donna Godchaux, Keith Godchaux, and the welcome return of Mickey Hart to the Grateful Dead) during what was believed at the time to be their final run of shows: a five-night stand at San Francisco’s Winterland Ballroom in October of 1974, with the final night billed as “The Last One.” Blending stellar live performances, mind-bending animation, and interviews with band members and crew, the film has a rare focus on the band’s fans and their deep commitment to the “Dead Head” lifestyle.

This milestone release marks the last of only two films co-directed by the Grateful Dead’s founder and frontman Jerry Garcia, and the first time it has returned to the big screen in eight years. Audiences are encouraged to stay until the end for the exclusive theatrical premiere of “China Cat Sunflower > I Know You Rider,” a bonus live performance from the October ‘74 Winterland shows not included in the official film release, allowing fans to watch this iconic live session on the big screen for the first time.

The Grateful Dead’s archivist and legacy manager, David Lemieux, praised the remastered IMAX screening, enthusing, “It was the greatest screening I’ve ever experienced of a film I’ve seen hundreds of times.”

“The Grateful ‘Dead Meet-Up at the Movies’ has always been a time-honored tradition for Trafalgar Releasing and the Dead Head community,” said Kymberli Frueh, SVP of Programming and Content Acquisitions at Trafalgar Releasing. “This year’s event is especially transportive as we celebrate the Grateful Dead’s 60th anniversary by bringing The Grateful Dead Movie back to cinemas and to IMAX screens for the first time ever. We hope fans join us to relive the magic, the music, and the spirit of the Dead like never before.”

Mark Pinkus, President of Rhino Entertainment, said, “We’re excited to share the magic of this band and this classic film in the IMAX format for the first time. Dead Heads are going to love it.” Trafalgar Releasing is pleased to announce the first ever “Meet-Up At The Movies” merchandise line as part of the celebratory theatrical release, featuring commemorative hoodies, T-shirts, caps, and totes.

The Grateful Dead is a social and musical phenomenon that grew into a genuine American treasure. In 1965, an entire generation was linked together by common ideals, gathering by the hundreds and thousands. This movement created a seamless connection between the band and its fans. As the band toured, Dead Heads would follow. Not because it was a part of popular culture but because it is a true counterculture that exists to this very day-one that earnestly believes in the value of its beliefs. By 1995, the Grateful Dead had attracted the most concertgoers in the history of the music business, and today remains one of the all-time leaders in concert ticket sales. Eventually, the caravan evolved into a community with various artists, craftsmen and entrepreneurs supplying a growing demand for merchandise that connected them to the music with their final tally being 2,318 total concerts. The band was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1994 and received a Recording Academy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. The Grateful Dead celebrated their 65th Top 40 album on the Billboard chart, a feat no other artist has achieved, and was commemorated in the 47th class of the Kennedy Center Honorees as well as the 2025 MusiCares Persons of the Year honored at the 67th Annual GRAMMY Awards.

Telluride Bluegrass Partners With nugs for 2025 Livestream Experience

0

Telluride Bluegrass is proud to announce their partnership with nugs, which ensures Festivarians near and far can experience the magic of this year’s festival via livestream, from the comfort of their home. Physically taking place this weekend, June 19-22, in beautiful Telluride, Colorado, the festival is ground zero for the ever-expansive roots music scene, and this year’s lineup is a continuation of this truth.

Dubbed Festivarians after a reinterpreted version of C.P. Cafavy’s poem, “Ithaka,” was printed in a 1994 Planet Bluegrass brochure, the term stuck and was embodied in a way that nobody could’ve guessed. These droves of families, friends, and music lovers make their yearly pilgrimage to Telluride’s Town Park to take in not just the most beautiful music festival, but maybe the most tight-knit community of repeat ticket-holders known to man. They know exactly what it means to be a Festivarian and are happy to invite newcomers to their fold.

When you set out for the festival, ask that your way be long…

and if you find her poor, the festival has not deceived you,

without her you would not have set out,

and would not have known what it means to be a festivarian…”

Expanding the Festavarian experience worldwide, the Telluride Bluegrass nugs stream begins on Thursday, June 19th at 1 PM MST, featuring live sets from Chris Thile, Mountain Grass Unit, The Travelin’ McCourys, I’m With Her, Thee Sacred Souls, and Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit. The stream will end around midnight MST.

Friday, June 20th’s Telluride Bluegrass stream begins again at 1 PM MST and features sets from Rainbow Girls, Tim O’Brien Band, Punch Brothers, Dan Tyminski Band, Lake Street Dive, and Greensky Bluegrass. The stream will again end around midnight MST.

Saturday, June 21st follows a similar schedule with a 1:45 PM MST stream start featuring sets from Béla Fleck, Edmar Castañeda, Antonio Sánchez (trio), Yonder Mountain String Band, Kasey Chambers, Sam Bush Band, and Toy Factory Project. The stream will end around 11:30p MST.

On Sunday, June 22nd, nugs’s livestream starts at 1:15 PM MST and features Ken Pomeroy, Rebirth Brass Band, and the Telluride House Band (Sam Bush, Béla Fleck, Jerry Douglas, Edgar Meyers, Stuart Duncan, Chris Thile). Special re-broadcast sets on Sunday’s stream include Charles Wesley Godwin (2023 at Telluride) and The String Cheese Incident (2023 at Telluride). Sunday’s stream wraps at 9:25 PM MST.

Tickets and camping passes are still available in limited quantities for Telluride Bluegrass Festival 2025 and can be found right here.

With a history of sharing stages with icons such as Wishbone Ash, Nazareth, FM, and Black Star Riders, Soulweaver are known for their emotionally charged songwriting, blistering live shows, and unmistakable classic British rock spirit with a modern edge.

Their comeback single, Red, arrives in June 2025 and sets the tone for what promises to be a thrilling new chapter. The track delivers massive hooks, melodic intensity, and a fiery blend of hard rock and modern metal—an authentic reflection of the band’s passion and renewed energy.

Meanwhile, Gypsy’s Kiss bring their own rich legacy to the stage. Originally formed in 1974 by David Smith and Iron Maiden’s Steve Harris, the band holds a unique place in British rock history. Sitting proudly at the top of the Iron Maiden family tree, Gypsy’s Kiss combine rock, blues, and a touch of prog in a sound that continues to evolve. With a new album on the horizon, fans can expect fresh material alongside their classic high-energy set.

This tour offers a rare opportunity to experience two bands with distinct legacies and powerful live reputations on the same bill. Expect passionate performances, soaring riffs, and a shared commitment to keeping the spirit of rock alive and well.
