Marcus King Shares “Carolina Honey” and Announces Star-Studded Summer Tour Following ‘Mood Swings’ and ‘Young Blood’ Success

0

The Marcus King Band unveils a further taste of new music with “Carolina Honey,” out now via American Records/Republic Records. Listen/share the song HERE.

“Carolina Honey” follows “Honky Tonk Hell.” Listen/share the song HERE.

“‘Carolina Honey’ is all about how I met my wife and what a significant impact that chance meeting had on my life that one night after a show in Raleigh, NC,” says King. “I woke up still hurting from the night before—still feeling I didn’t have much to live for. I’d given up on any thought that I could ever be ‘happy.’ All that changed when Little Bird walked into my life. After my set, Briley came backstage to say hello—she started playing Linda Ronstadt and singing, and for the first time I saw something or someone in front of me that gave me ‘hope.’ Someone I wanted to be my BEST self for—someone I wanted to grow old with, someone that made me want to grow old ‘at all.’ ‘Carolina Honey’ takes the listener through my mentality that day, my change of heart that night, and my burning desire for her to feel the same way too.”

The beloved Marcus King Band Family Reunion music festival will return for its fourth installment this summer, taking place in Charleston, SC, for the first time ever. Over the course of two days—August 23 and 24—the festival will see performances by the Marcus King Band, Jamey Johnson, Stephen Wilson Jr., Molly Tuttle, Hiss Golden Messenger, and more. Tickets and more information are HERE.

This year finds King hitting the road with Chris Stapleton, Cody Johnson, Eric Church, and Dwight Yoakam. Complete list of dates below. King will be performing at the Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival in Manchester, TN, on June 12. He recently took the stage at CMA Fest in Nashville, performing at Nissan Stadium alongside Brooks & Dunn following their release of “Rock My World (Little Country Girl)” on their Reboot II album. He also played Spotify House before joining forces with Jordan Davis for a special performance of their unreleased track, “Louisiana Stick.” Additionally, King surprised fans with a pop-up set at Chief’s for SiriusXM. He sat in with Lukas Nelson for his set at Chief’s as well.

Greenville, South Carolina–born, Nashville-based Marcus King started performing alongside his blues-guitarist father when he was just eight years old. He made his solo debut with El Dorado (2020), produced by Dan Auerbach of the Black Keys. The album was met with widespread acclaim; the Associated Press called it “a definite high point of 2020.” It went on to earn King a landmark Grammy nomination for Best Americana Album at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards.

He followed up the success of El Dorado with Young Blood (2022), also produced by Auerbach. The sophomore album debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Top Blues Albums Chart, with Billboard describing it as a “staggeringly confident work.” Last year, King returned with his third album, Mood Swings, produced by Rick Rubin, of which Rolling Stone writes that he “goes for something much more daring, vulnerable, and openhearted.”

“Just Backdated” By Melody Maker Writer Chris Charlesworth Takes You Inside Rock Journalism’s Wildest Era

0

Just Backdated – Melody Maker: Seven Years in the Seventies is a memoir by Chris Charlesworth who, between 1970 and 1977, was a staff writer and editor for Melody Maker, the UK’s best-selling music weekly in an era when rock stars fell over themselves to appear in its pages. Initially the paper’s News Editor, Chris was for four years MM’s US Editor, based in New York, a unique position in music journalism, and in that time regularly rubbed shoulders with rock’s most iconic heroes.

John Lennon, Paul McCartney, David Bowie, Rod Stewart, Elton John and dozens more found themselves face to face with Chris. He went on tour in America with The Who, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and many others. He was at 27 concerts by the original Who, often backstage or onstage. Somewhere above Colorado he took the controls of Led Zeppelin’s private plane. He saw an unknown Elton John at a disastrous festival in 1970 and predicted he would become a world star. He ambushed Pink Floyd in Glasgow and chased Bob Dylan in New England.

Chris watched Bruce Springsteen in Norfolk, Virginia, and acclaimed his flair 18 months before Born To Run was released. He was amongst the first music writers to write about the nascent CBGBs scene in New York, introducing MM readers to Debbie Harry long before she became a household name. He identified Slade as future stars a year before they had their first hit single. His only regret was never seeing Elvis.

Just Backdated – Melody Maker: Seven Years in the Seventies tells all these stories and many more. If you ever wanted to know what it was really like working full-time for a big selling music paper, taste the topsy-turvy lifestyle that went with it, and – yes – savour a juicy dollop of sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll, this is the book for you.

Chris Charlesworth said, ‘Looking back now, from the perspective of the 21st Century, what I did and who I met between 1970 and 1977 seems unreal, a fantasy. Unlike the tightly controlled situation we have today, it was access all areas for rock writers in those years. Perhaps John Lennon’s tragic murder was to blame for that tight control. John tops the list of those I hung out with, along with The Who, Led Zep, Bowie and many more, but my memoir does not name-drop for name-dropping’s sake, just tells it how it was when I was lucky enough to be slap band in the middle of it all.’

10 Classic Rock Songs You’ve Definitely Heard in a Movie

Classic rock and cinema? A match made in surround-sound heaven. These songs fill your ears, crank up the tension, add the joy, bring the cool factor, and sometimes even cue the tears. You may not remember the plot, but you definitely remember the guitar solo.

1. “Fortunate Son” – Creedence Clearwater Revival
Vietnam scene? Cue CCR. “Fortunate Son” becomes the go-to soundtrack of cinematic helicopters, slow-mo chaos, and anti-establishment vibes. It screams rebellion—and 1970s saturation filters.

2. “Bohemian Rhapsody” – Queen
One word: Wayne’s World. That iconic head-banging car ride transforms Queen’s epic suite into a slumber party essential. Few movie moments bring this much drama and delight.

3. “Gimme Shelter” – The Rolling Stones
Scorsese loves this one so much, he practically has it on speed dial. From Goodfellas to The Departed, it slides into a scene and carries suspense, swagger, and sirens all at once.

4. “All Along the Watchtower” – Jimi Hendrix
When Jimi’s guitar wails in Watchmen or A Bronx Tale, the tension rises. Dylan writes it. Hendrix electrifies it. Filmmakers turn it into atmosphere you can feel.

5. “Tiny Dancer” – Elton John
Thanks to Almost Famous, no tour bus ride feels complete without it. When the band and crew sing “Tiny Dancer,” the scene lights up with unity, redemption—and perfect harmony.

6. “Dream On” – Aerosmith
A high note, a flashback, a montage—this song fits them all. Whether it’s Miracle or The Departed, “Dream On” carries intensity and emotion like a power ballad with purpose.

7. “Layla” – Derek and the Dominos
The piano coda in Goodfellas changes the entire mood. It plays as secrets surface and stories shift. Slow, stunning, and slightly chilling—it captures everything without saying a word.

8. “Sweet Home Alabama” – Lynyrd Skynyrd
A barbecue, a jukebox, or a sly nod to the South—this one instantly transports you. Used in everything from Con Air to Forrest Gump, it brings familiarity, rhythm, and full-volume vibes.

9. “Immigrant Song” – Led Zeppelin
When Thor: Ragnarok kicks off with Zeppelin’s battle cry, every Marvel fan feels it. Wailing vocals, thunderous riffs, and Norse gods fly through the screen with pure power.

10. “Born to Be Wild” – Steppenwolf
Motorcycles rev, wind rushes in, and here it comes: THE song of cinematic freedom. From Easy Rider to Mrs. Doubtfire (yep, seriously), this anthem sets the tone for full-throttle adventure.

Some songs live on vinyl. Some blast from stage amps. And some rise in theaters, scene after scene, generation after generation. These tracks roll with the credits, echo through the decades, and bring the magic every single time.

Practical Stress Management Tips for Music Industry Pros

0

By Mitch Rice

The music business is a roller coaster of highs and lows, but it’s also packed with crazy pressures, unpredictable schedules, and endless demands. Even huge stars like Lady Gaga and Justin Timberlake have opened up about the mental toll of fame, and industry vets are singing from the same hymn book about how important it is to take care of yourself. Whether you’re a musician, publicist, manager, or anything in between, keeping your head straight is just as crucial as nailing your craft. Seriously, looking after your mental health is as vital as perfecting your sound.

Spotting When Things Are Getting Too Much

Music pros deal with unique stresses like hitting creative blocks. Are you getting tension headaches before gigs, having disrupted sleep cycles from touring or late-night studio sessions, or do you get really upset when you get negative feedback, all signs that the pressure’s piling up.

Look out for things like avoiding projects you used to love, getting annoyed easily with your bandmates or colleagues, or wanting to just cut yourself off from everyone. These aren’t signs of weakness; they’re your brain telling you it needs a break.

Quick Ways to Get Back to Earth

When everything’s going crazy, like during album deadlines or between tour stops, some simple grounding tricks can help you refocus in minutes:

  • The 5-4-3-2-1 Method: Try this during sound checks or before big meetings. Name five things you can see, four you can touch, three you can hear, two you can smell, and one you can taste. Artists like Adele use this to calm pre-show jitters, and it’s awesome for pulling you back to the present when you’re feeling overwhelmed.
  • Box Breathing: Perfect for backstage or studio breaks. Breathe in for four counts, hold for four, breathe out for four, hold for four. Do this five times before meetings, performances, or tough conversations. Lots of artists use breathing exercises as part of their creative routine.
  • Setting an Intention: Every morning, before you even look at emails or social media, decide on one main goal for your day. This clears your head and helps you make decisions based on what really matters.

Setting Smart Boundaries

Set boundaries for yourself and stick to them. Learn to tell the difference between stuff that feels urgent and what’s actually important. Instead of saying yes immediately during busy recording periods or tour planning, try saying, “Let me check my schedule and get back to you.”

Set specific times for checking emails and social media instead of being glued to your phone 24/7. Make some parts of your day, like meals or creative sessions, phone-free zones. Protecting your time means saving your energy for what’s most important.

Your Body: The Ultimate Foundation for Your Mind

Your body is your instrument, whether you’re on stage or behind the scenes. Even short 10-minute walks between recording sessions can release tension and give you a boost. Stars like Taylor Swift fit in regular workouts to handle stress and keep their energy up during long tours.

Sleep quality often beats quantity, especially with crazy schedules. Beyoncé has talked about how crucial uninterrupted deep sleep is for her creativity and performance, so she makes it a non-negotiable part of her routine.

Eating smart helps your brain work better during long studio days. Keep healthy snacks handy during marathon recording sessions or while traveling. And while everyone’s hydration needs are different, staying well-hydrated helps with focus and mood when you’re working hard. Artists also rethink their daily caffeine habits, exploring the differences in coffee and mushroom coffee to see which one better supports steady focus without the crash during long rehearsals or studio sessions

Building Your Support System

Even though you’re surrounded by people, the music industry can feel pretty lonely. Connect with other pros who get what you’re going through. Join professional groups or online communities where you can share without judgment. Artists like Chance the Rapper and John Mayer have spoken about how connecting with fellow musicians gave them emotional support and even creative inspiration.

Find mentors who’ve been there, done that. Their advice can be a lifesaver during tough times. And don’t shy away from getting professional help. Lots of therapists specialize in creative industries and understand the specific pressures you face; Demi Lovato and Kid Cudi have openly talked about this.

Smart Ways to Recharge

“Preventing burnout means being proactive, not waiting until you’re completely wiped out,” says James Smith, who’s the Head of Community at the online vape store Discountvapepen.com. Schedule quick breaks throughout your day. Just five minutes of deep breathing, stretching, or stepping outside can reset your mental state.

According to Smith, plan longer breaks after intense projects or tours and use this time to do stuff that has absolutely nothing to do with music:

  • Dive into a good book or catch up on movies
  • Spend time in nature – a hike, a walk in the park, anything that gets you outdoors
  • Pick up a new hobby that’s completely unrelated to music
  • Hang out with friends and family just for fun.

“Coming back refreshed after a break means you can approach your music with renewed energy and fresh perspective that you simply can’t get when you’re running on empty.”

Creating Your Rituals

Set up consistent little routines that signal the end of work and the start of rest. This could be as simple as changing out of your studio clothes, taking a shower to “wash off” the day, or listening to specific music that helps you unwind. Producer Rick Rubin is famous for his meditation practices and creating calm spaces that boost creativity and reduce stress.

Morning rituals can set a positive tone for the day, and evening rituals can help you process what happened and get ready for good sleep.

Rock Memoirist Steve Wynn Chronicles Life in The Dream Syndicate For “I Wouldn’t Say It If It Wasn’t True”

0

Summer 1984. I’ve got the back lounge of this tour bus all to myself, partly because I’m the lead singer but more likely because it means the rest of the band won’t have to deal with me for the rest of the day. Just two years earlier I was flunking out at UCLA, working the day shift in a record store, living out of my father’s basement. Now I’m living the million-to-one reality of touring the country with my band, The Dream Syndicate, opening for up-and-coming rock darlings R.E.M., and making a big-budget sophomore album for A&M Records. I’m also untethered and unbound, drinking a fifth of Jim Beam every day, barely speaking to my best friend and guitarist, and looking for trouble in all the wrong places. How did I get from there to here? And how do I get out? Stick around and find out. I’ll be here, dreaming my dream . . .

I Wouldn’t Say It If It Wasn’t True is a tale of writing songs and playing in bands as a conduit to a world its author could once have barely imagined—a world of major labels, luxury tour buses, and sold-out theaters, but also one of alcohol, drugs, and a low-level rock’n’roll Babylon.

Beginning with Wynn’s childhood in California in the 60s and 70s, the book builds to a crescendo with the formation of the first incarnation of The Dream Syndicate in 1981 as an antidote to the prepackaged pop music of the era. It charts the highs and lows of the band’s early years at the forefront of the Paisley Underground scene alongside Green On Red, Rain Parade, and The Bangles; the seismic impact of their debut album, The Days Of Wine And Roses; the spiraling chaos of the sessions for the follow-up, Medicine Show; the dissolution of the band’s first line-up and the launch of a second phase of The Dream Syndicate with Out Of The Grey and Ghost Stories; and more, culminating with the release of the landmark live album Live At Raji’s.

This is Wynn’s story, but it also features some of the biggest and most colorful characters of the period, offering a detailed field guide to the music business that manages to both glorify and demystify in equal measure. And, ultimately, it’s a tale of redemption, with music as a vehicle for artistic and personal transformation and transcendence.

Rock Band King Falcon Drops New Single “Plastic Crown” and Hits the Road

0

As the summer gets ready to kick off, New York rockers King Falcon is heating things up with their new single being released via Mascot Records. “Plastic Crown” is the latest offering from the quartet comprised of Michael Rubin [vocals, lead guitar], Joe Conserva [bass], Sergio Ripa [guitar], and Dipayan “Dip” Chakraborty [drums]. “Plastic Crown” is the debut from this current lineup and is an upbeat rocker that showcases the band’s songwriting ability to create unforgettable hooks. A music video for the song is in the works and will be released soon. “Plastic Crown” is now available on all digital services providers and can be found here: https://lnk.to/PlasticCrown.

“‘Plastic Crown’ is about a close relationship that falls apart and you realize how toxic of a situation it was. You don’t realize how much better life is until they are out of it. The song came together quick in the studio when the band added their personal touches to the original idea, and you can hear the final result. It is the first song we are releasing with this lineup, and we couldn’t be more excited for people to check it out,” explains Rubin.

King Falcon was recently featured on the broadcast TV program, ABC Localish. A camera crew followed the band around one afternoon and documented them at Industry – a Long Island venue where the band formed. The 5-minute feature was distributed through ABC Network’s national syndication and has added to the band’s following since release. The feature can be seen here.

That Time Peter Criss Confronted A Homeless Impostor On The Phil Donahue Show

0

This might be the weirdest rock story of the ’90s. A homeless man convinced Star magazine he was Kiss drummer Peter Criss. Then Criss had to go on The Phil Donahue Show to clear it all up—face to face.
