From the Dirt Unveils Sophomore Album ‘Colored Edge of Memory’ on June 27

0

From the Dirt, the harmony-soaked Americana quartet from central Maryland, will officially release their sophomore album, Colored Edge of Memory, on June 27, 2025. Recorded, produced, mixed, and mastered by Jerry Brown (Doc Watson, Lucinda Williams, Watchhouse, Steep Canyon Rangers) at Chapel Hill’s Rubber Room studio, the ten-track collection melds Bluegrass, Celtic, Americana, and rock ’n’ roll influences into vivid narratives of heartache, addiction, love, loss, and loneliness.

Lead singles “Afterwards, on the Greyhound,” “Angeline,” and “Train Wreck at the Bluegrass Jam” illustrate From the Dirt’s deft interplay of mandolin, fiddle, soaring harmonies, and poetic wordplay. On the ghostly “Silver Maple Spinners,” a lost love drifts back as a specter over a tense Celtic rhythm, while the starkly honest “Quitter (E” and “Trick of the Dark (E” confront addiction’s pull. In contrast, the rollicking bluegrass romp “Train Wreck at the Bluegrass Jam” and the triumphant “Luthier” celebrate musical camaraderie, craftsmanship, and the ties that bind generations of players.

Available June 27, 2025 on all streaming platforms and physical formats.

Columbia Pike Blues Festival Celebrates 28 Years of Local Talent and Community Spirit

0

This June, the Columbia Pike Blues Festival returns for its 28th year, transforming Arlington’s vibrant Columbia Pike corridor into a weekend-long celebration of America’s greatest musical art form. Presented by the Columbia Pike Partnership in collaboration with Arlington Arts, the festival remains the largest blues gathering in the D.C. metropolitan area, drawing thousands of residents and visitors for an unforgettable day of live music, local vendors, and family-friendly fun.

This year’s lineup spotlights some of the region’s finest talent alongside rising stars who are redefining the blues. Everyday Everybody, the D.C.-based ensemble celebrated for its electrifying fusion of funk, soul, jazz, and afrobeat, will set the stage ablaze with their dynamic grooves. Sol Roots—renowned guitarist and soulful vocalist—brings the weight of worldwide tours and mentorship under blues and funk legends, offering a powerhouse performance infused with New Orleans–style funk and heartfelt rock. Piedmont blues virtuoso Rick Franklin, a founding member of the DC Blues Society, will charm the crowd with his light-footed fingerpicking and warm tenor vocals, honoring the legacy of acoustic greats from Blind Blake to John Cephas. Blues-funk harmonica master Anthony “Swamp Dog” Clark and his band will deliver a blistering mix of contemporary blues and funk edge, while Little Red and the Renegades will showcase their high-energy zydeco and New Orleans R&B, complete with accordion, steel pan, and driving rhythms that have made them local favorites for decades.

More than a music festival, the Columbia Pike Blues Festival is a tribute to the rich diversity and spirited creativity of Arlington and the wider D.C. community. Attendees can explore an array of artisan booths, sample food and drink from neighborhood eateries and craft vendors, and enjoy children’s activities that make the event truly inclusive. From seasoned blues aficionados to families seeking a fun summer outing, there is something for everyone to discover—whether it’s a toe-tapping bluegrass set, a smooth jazz interlude, or a mouthwatering barbecue plate paired with locally brewed beer and wine.

In past years, the festival has welcomed national headliners such as Sonny Landreth, Nikki Hill, and Bettye LaVette, underscoring its reputation as a must-attend event. This year, however, the focus turns homeward, shining a spotlight on the Washington, D.C., area’s own musical backbone. Festival organizers invite the entire community to come together for what promises to be the best block party of the summer.

Since 1995, Columbia Pike has hosted the region’s premier free outdoor blues festival each June, celebrating the enduring spirit of the blues and the people who keep its traditions alive. Presented by the Columbia Pike Partnership and Arlington Arts, the festival showcases diverse genres—from blues and jazz to funk and zydeco—and features local artisans, food trucks, and activities for all ages. Mark your calendars and join thousands of your neighbors for a day of unforgettable music, culture, and community on Columbia Pike.

50 Facts About Les Paul, the Guitar God Who Changed Music Forever

To call Les Paul just a guitar player is limited. He was a wizard, an inventor, a harmonica-blowing, jazz-shredding, tape-splicing musical genius from Waukesha, Wisconsin. He didn’t just make music — he made how music is made. So today, on what would’ve been his birthday, we’re cranking up the amps, slapping on some reverb, and celebrating the man who electrified music, quite literally. Here are 50 facts that’ll make you love Les Paul even more.

  1. Les Paul was born Lester William Polsfuss in Waukesha, Wisconsin, in 1915.
  2. His first stage names were Red Hot Red and Rhubarb Red.
  3. He taught himself harmonica at 8, guitar at 9, and built his first electric guitar with parts from a phonograph.
  4. He once wired a phonograph needle to his guitar and plugged it into a radio speaker — and rock and roll was never the same.
  5. Before the Log, he built a guitar using a 2-foot piece of train rail.
  6. Les Paul dropped out of high school to join a radio band.
  7. His mother’s relatives made Stutz cars and Blatz beer — now that’s a combo.
  8. Les Paul invented the harmonica holder that Bob Dylan and Neil Young would later make famous.
  9. He recorded under two names at once: Rhubarb Red by day, Les Paul by night.
  10. Django Reinhardt was his idol, and they eventually became close friends.
  11. Les Paul paid part of Django’s funeral expenses when he died.
  12. He gifted Django’s widow a guitar — and she gave him one of Django’s prized Selmers in return.
  13. He was electrocuted while jamming in his basement in 1941 and nearly died.
  14. During WWII, he performed with Nat King Cole and the Andrews Sisters.
  15. Bing Crosby once told him, “Build your own studio.” So he did — in his garage.
  16. Les Paul invented multitrack recording so he could be a one-man band.
  17. His version of “Lover” featured 8 guitar parts, all played by him.
  18. His song “How High the Moon” was a #1 hit in 1951 — and a multitrack marvel.
  19. In 1948, he nearly lost his right arm in a car crash. He had it set permanently to hold a guitar.
  20. He was married to Mary Ford, and together they sold millions of records.
  21. Mary Ford harmonized with herself using Les’s overdubbing magic.
  22. Together, they recorded 16 Top 10 hits between 1950 and 1954.
  23. Les Paul once said, “Mary made me sound like a genius.”
  24. He hosted a radio show and TV show from his home studio in the ’50s.
  25. The “Les Paulverizer” — his fictional gadget — explained how he could sound like a dozen guitars at once.
  26. Then he actually built a real one.
  27. Gibson originally turned down Les’s solid-body guitar idea in 1941.
  28. They changed their mind in 1952 — and the Gibson Les Paul was born.
  29. The Les Paul guitar has become one of the most iconic instruments in music history.
  30. He didn’t just play guitar — he reshaped how it sounded, how it was recorded, and how it was played.
  31. Les Paul was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988.
  32. He’s also in the National Inventors Hall of Fame — the only musician to hold both honors.
  33. He kept tinkering all his life — creating flangers, phase shifters, and tape delay effects.
  34. His home studio was affectionately nicknamed “The Monster” for all its gear.
  35. He collaborated with Chet Atkins, another guitar legend, on two albums.
  36. Steve Miller of the Steve Miller Band? That’s his godson — and Les taught him to play.
  37. He played weekly shows at New York’s Iridium Jazz Club until he was 94 years old.
  38. He won two Grammys at age 90 for Les Paul & Friends: American Made World Played.
  39. He didn’t read music — he just played from the heart.
  40. Slash, Jeff Beck, and Jimmy Page all say they owe their sound to Les Paul.
  41. He helped make the eight-track tape a thing — yes, really.
  42. In 2009, Google honored him with a playable homepage guitar for his 96th birthday.
  43. Over 40 million songs were recorded on that doodle in two days.
  44. Les loved to joke and improvise — Mary Ford often couldn’t keep a straight face during recordings.
  45. He inspired the invention of the headless guitar decades before it became cool.
  46. He could shred jazz, country, and blues like it was nothing.
  47. His guitar solos were so fast they sometimes had to be slowed down for transcription.
  48. His final resting place is in his hometown of Waukesha, Wisconsin.
  49. In Times Square, Les Paul’s 100th birthday was celebrated with a massive concert.
  50. His motto? “If you’re not hearing what you like, go out and invent it.”

Les Paul dreamed about the future, and plugged it in, turned it up, and let it rip. Whether you’ve ever played a Les Paul guitar, listened to a record, or messed with a loop pedal, you owe something to this trailblazing, humble, harmonica-toting genius. He didn’t change music. He built the machine music changes with.

Happy birthday, Les. The world still echoes with your sound.

The importance of music to enhance entertainment

0

By Mitch Rice

Music is an unbelievably powerful tool. A great track can be motivating, moving, inspiring and exciting, meaning that playing the right song at the right time can seriously enhance countless other activities. From the sound of an epic anthem when your favorite sports team scores, to the power of an orchestral soundtrack during an emotional movie, these magical musical moments often have an enormous impact and stay in our hearts long after the song ends. Let’s explore the mystical power of music, and why this incredible sensory experience is such an integral part of almost every form of entertainment in the world!

  1. Film and TV Soundtracks

Whilst we typically associate movies with the visual big screen experience, all the best blockbuster classics would be nothing without their scores and soundtracks. Ever since the dawn of cinema and television, modern films and TV shows have been shaped by their audio selections, and some of the most memorable on-screen moments are famed for an iconic song choice above anything else. Think of Celine Dion’s unforgettable voice during the most emotional scenes in Titanic, or the mood-setting use of Unchained Melody in Ghost; these legendary songs captured our hearts, providing the vital emotional undertones for some of the finest scenes in cinema. Instrumentation is also vital to modern day drama – after all, watching an action scene without a tense soundtrack would just be plain weird! Without music, most movies and TV shows would be pretty dull, don’t you think?

  • Music and Gaming

Alongside big screen entertainment, music also now plays an absolutely vital role in the world of gaming, with almost every modern game featuring its own unique backing tracks. Audio can seriously enhance the gaming experience by adding tension during challenging levels, or boosting the excitement of a winning moment. Certain popular titles are even famed for their soundtracks, with the iconic scores to games like Final Fantasy and Super Mario Bros becoming legendary in their own right. Music is also increasingly prevalent on popular iGaming platforms, with classic casino card games and online slots all featuring an engaging and thrilling backing track. On all the best minimum deposit casino sites in Canada today you will find that music plays a powerful role, helping to make every move feel exciting. The right audio choices can totally transform the gameplay experience, turning this exciting form of entertainment into something even more immersive and magical.

  • In the Background

Whilst music often comes built-in to popular movies and games, it also has an incredible power to enhance other hobbies when played in the background. Many people find that songs have a soothing and relaxing power when they listen to them whilst engaging in other activities – for example, sitting down to paint while listening to your favorite artist can be a great way to unwind after a busy day, whilst cooking dinner is always better with the radio on. A gentle soundtrack to your daily life can enhance your mood and boost the restorative effects of your hobbies, so listening to a classic album in the background is a brilliant way to enhance almost any form of entertainment you can think of. Similarly, there’s a clear reason why restaurants, bowling alleys, shopping centres and countless other public spaces all have a playlist of their own – the right choice of background music just makes everyday activities that little bit more fun!

  • Music in Sport

The importance of music in sport cannot be overstated. From hype tracks at the beginning of a boxing match, to the motivating impact of a great playlist at the gym, sounds and sports go hand in hand to create a more competitive, exhilarating experience. These epic musical moments often help to build team unity and a sense of community amongst sports fans – a prime example is Liverpool FC’s unforgettable anthem ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’, which has undoubtedly shaped the culture and identity of the club, and regularly brings fans together in song during moments of both struggle and celebration. A great soundtrack also helps to build up the atmosphere at stadium events and tournaments, with major events like the Olympics and the World Cup always accompanied by a powerful song selection. After all, sporting events contain the whole spectrum of human emotion, meaning that music truly enhances all the emotional highs and lows in sport today.

  • Live Music Experiences

Last but certainly not least, it’s also important to highlight the enormous power of music as a form of entertainment in its own right. Live music offers an incredible opportunity to experience songs in their purest form, and performers at local venues, celebratory events and festivals all provide a fantastic soundtrack to our lives. Whether you saw an awesome live band play at your best friend’s wedding, or were blown away by a street performer in your local town, live performances frequently transform our everyday experiences for the better. Many top restaurants and bars now have a regular calendar of music events in the hopes of enhancing the overall experience for their patrons, whilst community events often bring in local bands to help create an enjoyable atmosphere. It is clear that music just has this undeniable ability to bring people together by enhancing everyday moments, and providing a communal, joyous experience no matter where you are in the world.

It is easy to underestimate the importance of music, but clearly, this inspiring sensory experience can be used to enhance almost every form of entertainment imaginable. Sounds helps to set the emotional tone of our lives, and throughout the highs and lows, iconic songs regularly play a powerful role in the background. Just imagine watching your favorite movie without its soundtrack, or watching a sports game without those epic anthems – evidently, most entertainment would be a shadow of itself without music. Why not try listening to a playlist during your next hike or creative project? You’ll quickly understand the importance of music to enhance every entertaining moment, big or small!

Spotify and Mentivity Spotlight Youth Spaces’ Vital Role in U.K. Music with ‘The Centre’

0

Youth spaces are crucial for the well-being of children and young people, as they instill a deep sense of belonging and ignite creativity. But in the U.K., these spaces have been in rapid decline due to decades of funding cuts, leaving young people with fewer places to be creative and engage with their communities in positive ways.

To underscore the importance of youth spaces in the U.K., Spotify has teamed up with the London-based youth mentoring organization Mentivity to release our new short film The Centre. Filmed and directed by Adeyemi Michael, The Centre showcases the transformative impact youth spaces can have on burgeoning local artists and U.K. music culture at large, which has birthed influential genres like grime and U.K. drill.

Featuring hip-hop duo Young T & Bugsey, rapper Ms Banks, drummer Femi Koleoso from the Mercury Prize-winning jazz quintet Ezra Collective, and MC and producer NovelistThe Centre chronicles the ways each artist’s youth club experiences helped inspire their creative journeys and the music they produce to this day.

While 750 youth spaces across the U.K. have closed since 2010, they still play a vital role in fostering the creative development of young people across the country. In fact, these spaces have helped shape the careers of some of today’s leading artists and musicians. Take Young T & Bugsey, who met at age 15 and spent the following years honing their craft at youth spaces in their hometown of Nottingham. To date, they’ve racked up more than 850 million streams on Spotify.

According to a recent survey commissioned by Spotify, 70% of young people in the U.K. feel that youth clubs help nurture creative talent, and 74% want to learn more about creative industries. More than three quarters (77%) believe youth spaces create a safe environment for young people.

In addition to highlighting the ways youth spaces have meaningfully impacted U.K artists, The Centre celebrates the opening of Mentivity House, a newly developed youth space in the southeast London neighborhood of Peckham.

“Mentivity House is an example of how we reclaim our block,” said Mentivity founder Sayce Holmes-Lewis. “Over a decade in the making, this is a full-circle moment for me. Growing up and working here for 25 years, I’ve seen regeneration change the area. We’re committed to strengthening our roots and creating a lasting legacy for our community, helping young people become the best versions of themselves.”
