Spotify’s Loud & Clear Report Shows Canadian Artists Are Dominating the Global Stage

0

Today, Spotify launches its Loud & Clear report—their annual deep dive into the economics of music streaming—in Canada, and with it, a powerful story of how Canadian artists are thriving on a global stage.

The timing couldn’t be better. Just over a decade since Spotify launched in Canada, the country’s music creators have become some of the most influential and most streamed in the world. With global superstars like The WeekndJustin BieberCéline DionTate McRaeNAVbbno$Charlotte Cardin, and Patrick Watson, Canadian talent has not only shaped the sound of the past 10 years—it’s exported it worldwide.

And the numbers prove it. In the last year alone, Canadian artists earned nearly $460M CAD in royalties on Spotify, a 5% increase year over year, contributing to a near doubling of earnings in the past five years alone.

Since 2017, the number of Canadian artists generating at least $50K, $100K, $500K, and $1M CAD annually on Spotify has more than doubled. And remarkably, 92% of those royalties in 2024 came from listeners outside of Canada—a testament to how Canadian music is resonating far beyond its borders.

As Spotify marks more than 10 years of championing and amplifying Canadian voices, Loud & Clear offers a look at where those voices are going next and why the world is still turning up the volume on Canada.

A record year for Canadian artists

To underscore their gains: Canadian artists earned nearly $460M CAD in royalties from Spotify in 2024—a 5% increase from last year, and nearly double what they made in 2019. That’s not just streams; that’s sustainable careers being built in studios, basements, and tour vans from Vancouver to Halifax.

Spotify is now the number-one source of music royalties in the world and for Canada: It’s the critical engine of the music industry that’s powering the next generation of creators. Not only is Spotify the largest single source of music royalties globally, but Spotify alone paid more in royalties to the Canadian music sector in 2023 than the entire Canadian commercial radio industry combined, including royalties and Canadian Content Development (CCD) contributions. For Canadian artists, it’s helping turn streaming into a sustainable, global career path.

Recorded music revenue in Canada grew 129% between 2014 and 2024, from $397M CAD to $909M CAD. Audio streaming now accounts for nearly 79% of total recorded music revenue, with the majority from paid subscriptions like Spotify Premium.

And this success isn’t limited to major label acts: Indie artists and labels made up around 40% of all Canadian royalties on the platform last year.

“Spotify is more than a streaming service—it’s a springboard for Canadian artists to reach listeners in every corner of the globe,” said Elizabeth Phipps, Head of Artist and Label Partnerships, Spotify Canada.

Canadian sounds, global impact

Here’s what might surprise you: 92% of the royalties earned by Canadian artists on Spotify in 2024 came from outside of Canada. Fifteen million hours of music by Canadian artists are streamed every day on Spotify around the world, and that music features on 2.4B user playlists globally.

That makes Canada one of the world’s top music exporters and a key player in the global soundscape. It also means Canadian artists are making it big not just in Toronto or Montréal, but in cities like Jakarta, Osaka, Melbourne, London, São Paulo, Berlin, Mexico City, and Seoul.

And it’s not just English-language music. French-language artists saw a 15% boost in global Spotify royalties in 2024, a fivefold increase since 2017. In fact, Québécois artist Patrick Watson’s “Je te laisserai des mots” was the most popular francophone track on Spotify globally in 2024, and the first French-language track to pass 1 billion streams.

Leading with diversity and independence

Canadian women are making both hits and history on Spotify: Since 2020, their global streams on Spotify have nearly doubled, and in 2024, more than 40% of Canadian artists earning over $1M CAD on Spotify were women or in groups with both male and female members. All this puts Canada alongside the likes of Sweden and South Korea as the top countries in the world when it comes to female representation in their top artists.

Spotify is also lifting up independent voices—from singer-songwriters in Saskatoon to label-free rappers in Scarborough—through playlisting, editorial support, and real-world activations like billboards in Sankofa Square and festival stages at Les Francos de Montréal.

“This is what Canada sounds like—diverse, digital, and not just thriving domestically, but leading on the world stage. The data is clear in underscoring the vital role that export plays in sustaining the overall health of Canada’s music industry.” said Xenia Manning, Director of Global Music Policy, Spotify.

As they look to the next 10 years of Spotify in Canada, there’s a fresh opportunity to reimagine how Canada nurtures its cultural economy and what policies it will choose for the future. Spotify is optimistic that leaders will lean into a future-facing, inclusive vision—one that reflects how today’s creators make, share, and grow their art in a digital-first world.

Because Canadian artists shouldn’t just be heard. They should be celebrated. Globally.

How Do Hoverboards Work

0

By Mitch Rice

Evеr lookеd at somеonе gliding еffortlеssly down thе strееt on a hovеrboard and thought, “How doеs that thing еvеn work?”

You not alonе.

Thеsе slееk, futuristic dеvicеs havе caught thе world’s attеntion—but bеnеath thеir cool еxtеrior liеs a mix of smart tеch and simplе physics. Whеthеr you’rе just curious or thinking of buying onе, undеrstanding how hoverboards work will hеlp you apprеciatе thе tеch bеhind thе ridе.

Lеt’s brеak it down—without all thе complicatеd jargon.

What Exactly Is a Hovеrboard?

First things first, no—it doеsn’t hovеr likе in sci-fi moviеs.

A hovеrboard is a sеlf-balancing, two-whееlеd pеrsonal transport dеvicе. You control it by shifting your body wеight forward, backward, or to thе sidеs. It’s likе a mix bеtwееn a skatеboard and a Sеgway—but without thе handlе.

Thе ridе fееls smooth, almost likе floating, which is why it got thе catchy namе “hovеrboard.”

Corе Componеnts of a Hovеrboard

To rеally undеrstand how it works, lеt’s look undеr thе hood. A hovеrboard may sееm likе a singlе unit, but it’s made up of sеvеral parts working togеthеr in pеrfеct sync.

1. Thе Gyroscopе and Spееd Sеnsors

Thеsе arе thе brains bеhind thе balancе.

Evеry hovеrboard comеs with gyroscopic sеnsors that dеtеct thе anglе at which thе ridеr is lеaning. As soon as you shift your wеight forward or back, thе sеnsors sеnd that data to thе logic board (aka thе mini-computеr).

Thе spееd sеnsors mеasurе how fast thе whееls arе turning and how far you’rе tilting. This information gеts sеnt to thе gyroscopе for furthеr analysis.

Togеthеr, thеy makе surе you don’t fall flat on your facе.

2. The Logic Board

This is thе “CPU” or brain of thе hovеrboard.

It procеssеs all thе input from thе sеnsors and tеlls thе motors what to do. It’s fast—fast. So еvеn tiny movеmеnts arе dеtеctеd and adjustеd in rеal timе.

This allows thе board to sеlf-balancе and rеspond almost instantly to your movеmеnts.

3. Thе Elеctric Motors

Most hovеrboards havе two small еlеctric motors—onе insidе еach whееl. Thеsе motors arе what actually movе thе board forward or backward.

Dеpеnding on how much prеssurе you apply (by lеaning), thе logic board tеlls thе motors to adjust thе whееl spееd and dirеction.

4. Thе Battеry Pack

There is no gas nееdеd hеrе. A hovеrboard runs on lithium-ion battеriеs, thе samе kind found in your phonе or laptop.

Thеsе battеriеs arе compact, lightwеight, and rеchargеablе. A full charge usually gives you anywhеrе from 6 to 15 milеs of riding time.

But bе carеful—chеap or off-brand hovеrboards somеtimеs usе low-quality battеriеs, which can ovеrhеat or еvеn catch firе. Always go for a trustеd brand.

How Doеs a Hovеrboard Know Whеrе You’rе Going?

It’s all about prеssurе and anglе.

Each footpad on thе hovеrboard has prеssurе-sеnsitivе switchеs undеrnеath. Whеn you placе your fееt on thе board and lеan slightly forward, thе sеnsors dеtеct that shift in wеight.

Thеn:

·        Thе gyroscopе calculatеs thе tilt.

·        The logic board procеssеs it.

·        Thе motors adjust thе whееls to movе forward.

It’s a smooth process that happens in millisеconds.

Want to turn? Just push down with onе foot morе than thе othеr. That tеlls thе motors to movе onе whееl fastеr than thе othеr, spinning thе board in placе.

Easy, right?

Balancе Is thе Kеy

The standout fеaturе of any hovеrboard is its sеlf-balancing mеchanism. And it’s not just a buzzword—it’s thе еntirе rеason you can ridе it safеly.

This sеlf-balancing systеm constantly adjusts to tiny shifts in your body position. That’s why, whеn you stand still, thе board kееps you upright. And whеn you lеan forward just a littlе, you start moving.

You don’t havе to bе an еxpеrt to ridе onе. Thе hovеrboard doеs most of thе thinking for you.

Diffеrеnt Typеs of Hovеrboards

Not all hovеrboards arе madе thе samе. Thеrе arе sеvеral typеs basеd on usе, tеrrain, and whееl sizе.

1. Classic Hovеrboards

Thеsе arе thе basic modеls you sее most oftеn. Thеy’rе grеat for smooth surfacеs likе sidеwalks and indoor spacеs.

2. Off-Road Hovеrboards

Thеsе comе with biggеr whееls and strongеr motors. You can takе thеm on grass, dirt, and еvеn gravеl paths.

3. Bluеtooth and App-Enablеd Hovеrboards

Somе modеls comе with spеakеrs, lights, and mobilе apps. You can change riding modеs, check battеry lifе, or еvеn track your distancе.

Safеty First: Important Tips for Bеginnеrs

Evеn though a hovеrboard balancеs itsеlf, safety still mattеrs.

Hеrе arе a fеw tips to kееp in mind:

·        Wеar a hеlmеt. Always. Just like biking or skating.

·        Start slow. Practicе indoors or in an opеn, safе arеa bеforе riding on sidеwalks or roads.

·        Chеck your battеry. Nеvеr ovеrchargе it or lеavе it pluggеd in ovеrnight.

·        Stay visiblе. If you’rе riding at dusk, makе surе your board has LED lights or usе rеflеctivе gеar.

Why Hovеrboards Bеcamе So Popular

Lеt’s bе honеst—hovеrboards look cool. That’s a big part of thе appеal.

But beyond that, thеy offеr:

·        A fun way to get around.

·        A great tool for improving balancе and corе strength.

·        An еco-friеndly transportation option.

Thеy’rе еspеcially popular with kids, tееns, and young adults. And with nеwеr modеls offеring Bluеtooth spеakеrs and custom LED lights, thеy’rе morе customizablе than еvеr.

Thе Futurе of Hovеrboards

Wе’vе comе a long way sincе thе first gеnеration of hovеrboards.

Modеrn modеls arе smartеr, safеr, and morе powеrful. Somе еvеn fеaturе AI-basеd movеmеnt prеdiction, hеlping improvе balancе and control furthеr.

And although wе’rе still waiting for a truе “hovеring” board likе in thе moviеs, thе futurе looks bright.

In thе coming yеars, wе might sее:

·        Solar-powеrеd hovеrboards

·        Fully watеrproof modеls

·        Intеgration with smartwatchеs and AR glassеs

Exciting timеs ahеad.

Conclusion: Hovеrboards Arе Morе Than Just a Toy

At first glancе, a hovеrboard looks likе a fun gadgеt. But oncе you undеrstand thе tеch insidе—gyroscopеs, sеnsors, logic boards—it bеcomеs clеar that it’s a prеtty imprеssivе piеcе of еnginееring.

Thе nеxt timе you sее somеonе riding onе, you’ll know еxactly what’s happеning undеrnеath thosе whееls.

So whеthеr you’rе a curious tеch lovеr or thinking about buying onе, now you know how hovеrboards rеally work.

Just rеmеmbеr to lеan gеntly, kееp your balancе, and еnjoy thе ridе!

Best CCTV Solutions for Brooklyn Small Businesses

0

By Mitch Rice

Brooklyn is famous for its creative and cultural vibe; however, it is a hub of commerce, too. Small businesses have enough opportunities to thrive there, so plenty of family-owned cafes, cozy retail boutiques, and barbershops add charm to landscape – and make its owners think about security more often.

Indeed, if you know that your premises, your stuff, and your inventory is under surveillance you feel more comfortable and confident. That is why providers and installers keep developing cutting-edge and perfectly customized security solutions for entrepreneurs. This time, experts from 718-USA-CCTV installation company, talk about them in detail.

1. HD Internet Protocol Cameras

CCTV installation

This hardware is known for crystal clear and detailed images, which make identifying faces, license plates, and inventory relocation more than possible. Besides, the resolution is perfect for identifying theft or disputes; that is why small business CCTV installation systems are based mostly on IP cameras.

Characteristics to consider:

  • Minimum resolution at 1080p (4MP or 5MP is preferred)
  • Wide-angle lenses providing a better view for tight interiors
  • Low-light or infrared features for better 24/7 surveillance

2. Remote Monitoring

Small business owners have a lot of things to do and a lot of things to control – from making deliveries to running second and even third point of sales. The ability to monitor premises via mobile device is a lifesaver to those who really care about what he does.

Points to Consider:

  • A mobile app for real-time access to footage.
  • Instant motion detection alerts
  • The ability to set custom zones.
  • Access to local or cloud storage through a phone or a tablet.

Cutting-edge CCTV systems allow you to watch your shop or office location even if you are on a business trip or on vacation.

3. Cameras for POS and Inventory Monitoring

As experienced entrepreneurs say, main losses come from the inside rather than outside. Today, small businesses can make things better thanks to indoor cameras pointed at POS areas, break rooms, and stock shelves. Such solutions maintain a better discipline and help to reduce thefts, as well as streamline key operations.

4.    Outdoor Cameras with Vandal-Resistant Casing

A street with bustling traffic is a great location for business, but exterior cameras is a must in this case. As 718-USA-CCTV installers says, rugged metal housing along with more anti-vandal features is a must here.

Characteristics to consider:

  • IP66 or IP67 rating
  • IK10 vandal resistance
  • Wide dynamic range (WDR) for dark or extremely bright areas

Conclusion

Up-to-date security camera solutions are essential when it comes to smooth small business operation. Feel free to seek technologies which fit into your security needs, as well as a reliable and experienced Brooklyn-based installer for seamless mounting and configuration.

Americana/Soul/Blues Folk Rockers LOOKOUT TOWER Release Soul-Stirring New Single “Valley Song”

0

From the misty hills of Cape Breton Island comes a song as timeless and yearning as the land itself. Lookout Tower — the genre-defying Americana, soul, blues, folk-rock, and alt-country band — have officially released their new single, “Valley Song,” out now.

Written during the heart of a Cape Breton winter, “Valley Song” captures the delicate tension between clinging to lost love and embracing the freedom of letting go. It’s an evocative journey through emotional valleys, where lush string arrangements by Blue Lobelia and heartfelt harmonies reminiscent of The Band blend seamlessly into Lookout Tower’s signature Winter Swamp Sound.

“Valley Song” was recorded deep in the woods at the band’s own Foxglove Studios and mixed by Grammy-nominated Nashville engineer Jon Estes (Langhorne Slim, John Paul White). The result is a track that feels both intimately handmade and timeless, a song that could have emerged from the Laurel Canyon scene of the 1970s just as easily as it could soundtrack a misty Cape Breton morning.

The band’s core lineup features four musicians whose chemistry is as natural as the tides: Rankin MacEachern (vocals), Bryan Picard (guitars, vocals), Franzi Habith (bass, vocals), and Bethany June (guitar, banjo, vocals). Together, they weave elements of folk, soul, blues, and rock into something deeply their own, blending old-time influences with modern storytelling.

Rooted in the vibrant cultural landscape of Baddeck, Cape Breton Island, Lookout Tower draws from hard times, coastal memories, and Acadian roots to create their distinct sonic identity. They call it Winter Swamp Sound — a no-holds-barred approach where soulful ballads, rousing blues rock, hypnotic funk, and old-time harmonies meet.

If you’re a fan of artists like The Band, Jason Isbell, Nathaniel Rateliff, Shovels & Rope, or The Felice Brothers, Lookout Tower belongs squarely in your musical collection. Their songs are built on the belief that heartache, hope, and joy all occupy the same room — and “Valley Song” is the perfect key to open that door.

The lyrics to “Valley Song” reveal the full emotional sweep:

“Gone are the days, trapped inside the horrors of my mind / Found are the ways to leave the thoughts of you so far behind”. It’s a raw, relatable depiction of learning to find freedom in moving forward, even when part of you longs to stay behind.

In their own words, Lookout Tower says:

“There is beauty in relationships, even once they have run their course. ‘Valley Song’ is our ode to love which once was, and the fear of what is to come.”

Beyond the studio, Lookout Tower has built a strong reputation on stages across Atlantic Canada, playing festivals like Cavendish Beach Festival and Blueberry Jam, and even organizing their own annual event, the Middle River Stomp. Their live performances are a celebration — soulful, communal, and impossible to forget.

Fans will have a chance to experience “Valley Song” and more as Lookout Tower hits the road this year, with a run of shows across Nova Scotia:

  • June 7 – Maritime Mania – Margaree, NS
  • June 21 – Fish Out of Water – Margaree, NS
  • July 26 – Island Folk – Sydney, NS
  • September 19 – Iona Heights – Iona, NS
  • October 25 – Bearly’s – Halifax, NS
  • November 22 – The Middle River Stomp – NS

Lookout Tower invites listeners everywhere to step into the swirling, soulful world they’ve created — one where sorrow and salvation dance hand in hand, and every note feels like a memory you never want to lose.

Banned & Outlawed Deliver a Blistering New Country Music Anthem with “People Talk”

0

When Jon and Daniel Hnatishin pick up their instruments, it’s not just country music they’re playing — it’s a way of life. Straight out of Hazelridge, Manitoba, Banned & Outlawed embody the spirit of small towns, hard work, and louder-than-life honesty. Their new single “People Talk,” produced by Chris Burke Gaffney, is a rowdy, razor-sharp anthem that captures the frustration and humor of being the subject of small-town rumors — and it’s out everywhere now.

In a world that loves to whisper, Banned & Outlawed fire back with guitars blazing. “This song really hits home for us,” says Jon, the band’s lead singer and guitarist. “We grew up hearing all kinds of nonsense about ourselves and our friends. It’s something everyone can relate to — you can be doing everything right, and people will still make up stories.” Daniel, the group’s drummer and backup vocalist, adds, “We just wanted to have fun with it. It’s the kind of song you can laugh to, sing along to, and maybe scream into a beer after a long week.”

Backed by the pounding drums and soaring guitar lines that have become their signature, “People Talk” shines a light on the everyday resilience of folks who refuse to let gossip define them. With lines like “If they don’t know, they just make it up / They love the drama, can’t get enough,” it’s a full-throttle reminder that living well is the best revenge.

Born and raised on the prairies of Manitoba, Jon and Daniel have been carving out a reputation for themselves one show at a time. Inspired by the grit of classic country and the fire of modern rock, their music leans into both tradition and rebellion — with no apologies and plenty of heart. Their sound is built on real-life stories, dirt-road dreams, and the bond between two brothers who were born to make noise.

Their “Livin’ My Life in a Small Town” Tour hits the road this spring and summer, with stops across Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario. Highlights include performances at Stonewall’s Canada Day celebration, Oak Lake Manitoba Beach, and the historic Thresherman’s Reunion Beer Gardens in Austin, Manitoba. This is a band that thrives on the road, where sweat, songs, and community collide under the open sky.

The band has already sparked excitement across social media with “People Talk,” drawing praise for its unfiltered storytelling and anthemic energy. “We just want people to hear it and feel like we’re right there with them, living it too,” Jon says. “Because we are.”

With nearly every track they release, Banned & Outlawed continue to stake their claim as one of the most promising new acts in country music. Their independent spirit, bolstered by the kind of hard-earned wisdom you can’t fake, has caught the attention of fans hungry for authenticity in a world full of noise.

As they sing in “People Talk,” “I wish they’d all just stop / But people talk…” — and with songs this good, people are going to be talking about Banned & Outlawed for a long time to come.

Upcoming Tour Dates:

  • April 26 – Livin’ My Life in a Small Town Tour – Rocanville, SK
  • July 12 – Oak Lake Manitoba– Oak Lake, MB
  • July 19 – Grand Palms Campground – MB

Skyler Reed Unveils Soul-Baring R&B Album ‘Boomerang’ After Year of Healing

For singer-songwriter Skyler Reed, music has always been more than a craft – it’s been a constant companion through life’s most defining moments. Her new album Boomerang is a powerful reminder of that bond: a collection of songs written not with the intention of making a record, but simply to feel whole again.

Born in Delaware and raised in Virginia, Reed moved to Atlanta nearly a decade ago, drawn to the city’s rich creative energy. With no local connections, she opened her own vocal studio — now a thriving hub for aspiring artists across Atlanta and online, reaching students as far away as Australia.

Prior to settling in Atlanta though, Skyler fell for a fellow musician and producer in Los Angeles, where she lived for nearly 4 years after graduating college. As can happen with matters of the heart, the relationship ended, and Skyler found herself emotionally adrift — and turned back to a process through which she’s always found clarity: songwriting.

“After my mother passed away when I was nine, my Aunt gave me a journal and told me to write down everything I was feeling,” Reed recalls. “That’s where it all started — and poems evolved into songs. And not long after, I won my first poetry slam. I’ve been writing to survive ever since.”

That same instinct shaped Boomerang. The album’s title — inspired by the Indigenous Australian word — has taken on new meaning for Reed: a symbolic return to self.

“This album is about the healing process,” she explains. “There are upbeat tracks like ‘The Start’ and ‘Two Week Notice,’ but there are also songs such as ‘Wasted Time’ that sit in the sadness. I started a TikTok series talking about how I hit rock bottom emotionally, how I was depressed, and how the music helped me come back.”

While previous releases leaned into neo-soul, Boomerang takes a distinct turn toward R&B. The shift is thanks in part to collaborators like Israel Martin, whose gospel-rooted piano work adds warmth and weight to the project, and thebangerslanger — known for his work with Coco Jones — whose crisp production and bold drum patterns give the album its rhythmic backbone.

“This is a different sound for me,” Reed says. “It’s R&B at its core. Working with Israel and Malik pushed me into new territory — and it felt right for where I was emotionally.”

Written across a year of intense personal growth, Boomerang captures the full arc of heartbreak and recovery. Tracks like High Expectations explore the realities of modern dating, while the title track reflects a deeper truth: that coming back to yourself is the most important journey of all.

“I wasn’t trying to make a record,” Reed says. “I just needed to write – even though there was a period when I didn’t perform for almost a year. I felt like I couldn’t sing anymore. But writing gave me something to hold onto. And slowly, the songs brought me back.”
