For a band as extreme as Lamb of God, mainstream success and touring the world to massive audiences was an almost surreal achievement. But for guitarist and lyricist Mark Morton, the triumph was dulled by the pain of addiction and loss.
In DESOLATION: A Heavy Metal Memoir, Morton traces the highs and the lows of his career and personal life, revealing how the pressures of success and personal battles eventually came into conflict with his dedication to the creative process. Morton writes about the greatest personal tragedy of his life: the death of his newborn daughter, which plunged Morton further into hopelessness. Surrounded by bandmates living their wildest dreams, Morton wanted nothing more than to disappear, ingesting potentially lethal cocktails of drugs and alcohol on a daily basis.
And yet intertwined with self-destruction and harrowing heartbreak, there were moments of joy, self-acceptance, and incredible connection. Morton developed close relationships with his bandmates and crew members, sharing experiences that have made for some strange and hilarious tales. He also gained a greater sense of purpose through interactions with his fans, who remind him that his work reaches people on a deeply personal level.
DESOLATION is, at its core, about Morton’s journey as a musician navigating self-doubt, anxiety, and the progressive disease of addiction, and ultimately finding relative serenity and gratitude.
Chrysalis Records are proud to present UFO’s classic 1980 album ‘No Place To Run’, newly remastered from the original production tapes transfers at AIR Mastering and reissued on stunning 3LP tri-fold sleeve 180gm vinyl and 2CD Digipak formats on August 15th, 2025.
‘No Place To Run’ was the eighth studio album by UFO and the first with Paul Chapman on guitar, following the departure of Michael Schenker. It was produced by legendary Beatles producer George Martin and recorded at his newly launched AIR Studios in Montserrat in the Caribbean, a stark difference from the bands’ usual surroundings.
Reflecting on the album forty five years later Phil Mogg said: “The thing that sticks in my mind from recording ‘No Place To Run’ was the complete miss match with UFO / George Martin (who was a lovely chap) and nothing summed it up more than when George would say to Geoff (sound engineer): ‘Well Geoff, it’s six o’clock, time for a G&T out on the veranda.’ How very civilized!”
The reissue includes a new and previously unreleased mix of ‘Live at The Marquee, London, November 16th 1980’, mixed by revered engineer Brian Kehew from the original multi-track tapes, giving a powerfully fresh sound. Only three tracks have ever been officially released before (‘Lettin’ Go’, ‘Mystery Train’ and ‘No Place to Run’). The other eleven tracks from this legendary show have not been available until now. The set will take fans right back to the electric atmosphere of the Marquee, with a band at the very top of their game.

In true festival tradition, the schedule is packed with the hallmark of folk festivals – workshops. They offer a rare and intimate experience: artists— some of whom may be playing together for the first time — share stories, collaborate spontaneously, and jam live on stage.

Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love were notorious for representing the opposite of “Family Values.” To reframe their notoriety, they consented to a rare photoshoot for Spin magazine with their newborn, Frances Bean. Only 5 images were originally published; the rest of the photoshoot is seen here for the first time.
“Now the entire family was in bed together, and Hansen remembers how beautiful it was to see everyone in sync. “They just were loving Frances. It was really so apparent,” she said. “It was really about her. They were oblivious to us in a lot of cases, anytime they had the baby,”’ said Guzman in an interview with CNN.
“Three decades later, Hansen and Peacock are revisiting this fabled shoot for the first time in their new book, Family Values (powerHouse Books), an intimate chronicle of a young couple driven by passion and love that eschewed the trappings of fame and celebrity for truth and art. Through Guzman’s portraits, we see the last of a fading breed: the true rock star who spoke for outsiders, misfits and radicals who wanted nothing more than to live by their own rules,” says AnOther.
With an ineffable ability to connect with people through his music, Kurt Cobain was charismatic and full of pathos, something of a lost boy poet struggling against his personal demons while holding the world in thrall. And yet in the midst of his struggles with success, fame, fortune, drugs, and the wounds of a traumatic childhood, he managed in his brief adulthood to get married to Courtney Love—who of course had her own accomplishments as an electrifying and unrestrained lead singer and lyricist. The couple had already emerged as a cultural touchstone when their baby, Frances Bean, was born in 1992. Photographers Guzman captured, amidst toys and pajamas, the sweetness, humor, irony and the simple happiness of a new mom and dad at home with their baby girl.
Family Values is a photography book presenting approximately 90 images featuring Kurt, Courtney, and their baby Frances, one morning in their modest Hollywood home selected from a photoshoot that Guzman did for Spin magazine in 1992. Only five photographs from the shoot were published in the magazine at the time, including the cover. Another appeared in Rolling Stone at the time of Kurt Cobain’s death. In Spin, the photos originally accompanied an interview by Jonathan Poneman, which Guzman plans to license to reprint in the book. The book will also include a memoir of the photo shoot written by Guzman and an introduction by curator and music journalist Michael Azerrad.
Family Values is a photographic assignment that revealed two famous rock stars who during one brief moment transcended the magnifying glass of fame and were revealed, amidst all the chaos, as being just a mom and dad.
Ben Nichols, frontman and songwriter for the long-running Memphis rock band Lucero, announced his sophomore solo album In the Heart of the Mountain will be released on July 25 via Lucero’s label Liberty & Lament. The album is one of his most personal pieces of work to date and marks his first solo release in 16 years since 2009’s acclaimed The Last Pale Light in the West.
Along with the announcement, Nichols has shared lead single “Fading Back Into the Night,” a heartfelt track that reflects on regrets and missed chances while offering hope that redemption is right around the corner. The release is accompanied by a music video shot and edited by photographer Chad Cochran at his studio in Cleveland, OH.
Nichols explains, “I’ve written a number of songs about being a f***-up and this is another one. A song about missing the boat. Getting to the game just a little too late. And then just fading away. That and the idea of the stars disappearing with the sunrise but always still being there in the night on the other side of the world. For some reason I thought those two sentiments went together nicely in one song.”
“A few years ago, a stranger mailed me a copy of What About This, Collected Poems of Frank Stanford. He sent it because he knew I was from Arkansas and Stanford had lived and died in Arkansas and he thought my lyrics shared something in common with those poems. Even at the age of 50, I’ve never read much poetry, but there was something about Stanford’s writing I fell in love with. There was something alive and dangerous in his words. Nothing safe about the way he wrote. Soaked in Southern tones but not backwards, more unconventional and pushing at the edges of Southern decorum. It was mythology and everyday life, it was an exotic landscape and it was home. It was not quite like anything I’d read before.
Frank Stanford’s poems made me want to write in a style I’d never written in before. I’m not sure if I actually achieved that, but I ended up creating my own everyday-life-mythology of where I was from. I also ended up writing some of my favorite lyrics in years. I had a handful of guitar parts that I was holding back from the band. They were acoustic-based and had a quieter feel to them and I wasn’t ready to turn them into Lucero songs. In my head I was hearing different instrumentation and a different approach than what the band usually does. And I had these new lyrics I was working on. Before I knew it, I’d written an album’s worth of songs and fashioned the song titles into a poem unworthy of Frank Stanford but still inspired by him.”
In the Heart of the Mountain features Nichols on acoustic guitar and vocals, as well as occasional electric guitar solo and percussion. He is accompanied by Morgan Eve Swain (The Huntress and the Holder of Hands, The Devil Makes Three, Brown Bird) on violin and backing vocals, Cory Branan on electric and acoustic guitars, and Todd Beene (Chuck Ragan, Glossary) on pedal steel and electric guitars. It was recorded at Southern Grooves studio in Memphis, Tennessee with Matt Ross-Spang as the recording and mixing engineer.
“I’d say In the Heart of the Mountain is the closest I’ve come to making an album completely on my own terms,” Nichols reflects. “I had help from a great engineer and great friends who also happened to be amazing studio musicians, but it was self produced. I wrote it without input from anyone else. There were no band members to negotiate parts and approaches with. It wasn’t based on a novel or a theme. The only inspiration was that desire to create something that lived in my memories of those rivers, fields, and mountains, in that mythological Arkansas my family called home, where I grew up. I haven’t been able to get back there nearly as often as I would like.”
Nichols’ has also announced a run of solo tour dates for July and August including shows in his hometown of Little Rock, Arkansas as well as St. Louis, Columbus, Cleveland and more. See full list of tour dates below.

For the final advance single from “Marc Urselli’s Best of Ramones Redux” that will be released parallel to the forthcoming MER Redux Series installment “Marc Urselli’s Ramones Redux”, Long Island trio Restless Spirit are being joined by High On Fire bass player Jeff Matz to pay homage to the Ramones track ‘Poison Heart’.
The liner-notes for the Ramones album “Mondo Bizarro” (1992), on which the song was originally released, claim that this song was one of three written by the band’s (at the time already former) bass player Dee Dee Ramone, who exchanged it for bail money following his arrest for possession of marijuana.
Restless Spirit comment: “When the idea of doing a Ramones tribute song came up, ‘Poison Heart’ was our obvious choice”, guitarist and vocalist Paul Aloisio writes. “This track has got everything that we like in a song – great leads, a big chorus, and introspective lyrics. On top of this, being able to record with a renowned producer like Marc Urselli was a dream, and of course, collaborating with Jeff from High On Fire is definitely a highlight of our career.”
The third and latest Restless Spirit full-length “Afterimage” embodies the East Coast trio’s aim of never wanting to sound exactly like before. The album serves Long Island deep-fried guitars seasoned with pounding rhythms and emotionally raw vocals. Where predecessor “Blood of the Old Gods” (2021) sometimes ushered the listener into twisted complexity,
“Afterimage” delivers short, sharp shocks that hit straight home. Embarking on their musical journey very early in life, the band’s core of Aloisio and bassist Marc Morello met the summer before Kindergarten and grew up discovering music side by side. Their debut full-length “Lord of the New Depression” (2019) fit equally well into the stoner, doom, and sludge molds, while on “Blood of the Old Gods”, the three-piece developed a more varied, melodic approach with added complexity.
Bass player Jeff Matz is best known as the bassist of American stoner metal band High On Fire from Oakland, CA. The band was founded by Sleep vocalist and guitarist Matt Pike together with the band’s first bass player George Rice in 1998. The latter was replaced by Joe Preston, who left the band while on tour in 2006. Zeke bass player Jeff Matz stepped in on short notice and the chemistry worked out so well that he became a full-time member of High On Fire during the recording of the fourth full-length “Death Is this Communion” (2007). Matz recorded and toured on the following five albums, with “Cometh the Storm” (2024) being the latest, and he is currently the only remaining full member along with Pike.
Today, the Hudson River Music Festival has announced that Grammy Award winning folk musician and activist Tom Chapin and The Chapin Sisters will join the festival lineup set for Saturday, June 14 from 11:00am-9:00pm in Croton Point Park.
Together, they will honor the enduring legacy of Pete and Toshi Seeger through music, community, and shared purpose. The Celebration of the Legacy of Pete & Toshi Seeger will kick off the festival from 11:00AM to 12:00PM, featuring Tom Chapin & Friends alongside The Chapin Sisters.
The prolific three-time Grammy Award-winning folk singer-songwriter is a longtime advocate for environmental causes, and issues surrounding hunger and social justice. In support of Pete and Toshi Seeger’s vision for a better world, Tom Chapin has performed at numerous Clearwater events over the years, embodying their ethos of activism through music. Influenced by Pete’s music as a child, Chapin grew to consider the Seegers both mentors and friends. He now joins the Hudson River Music Festival in honoring their legacy with his daughters Abigail and Lily (The Chapin Sisters).
A Celebration of Pete & Toshi Seeger will also feature special guest David Amram, hailed as “America’s Renaissance Man of Music,” who shared a close friendship and creative bond with Pete Seeger. Amram often spoke of Seeger’s unwavering commitment to social activism and the lasting inspiration he provided to musicians and advocates across generations. In 2013, Amram was honored with Clearwater’s Pete and Toshi Seeger Annual Power of Song Award. “He’s one of the most talented musicians in the universe!” — Pete Seeger, The New York Times, April 2011.
Rounding out the festival, musical acts also include Grahame Lesh & Friends – featuring Rick Mitarotonda (Goose), Oteil Burbridge (Dead & Company, Allman Brothers Band), Taylor Goldsmith, Griffin Goldsmith (Dawes), Rob Barraco (Phil Lesh Quintet), Jennifer Hartswick (Trey Anastasio Band), – Lucius featuring Griffin & Taylor Goldsmith, Madison Cunningham, Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Steve Earle & Friends and Jorma Kaukonen (Hot Tuna, Jefferson Airplane). Additional special activities will include the iconic Earthball, Pete & Toshi’s Grove, the Circle of Song, and family friendly performances from the Arm of the Sea Puppet Show and The Rock and Roll Playhouse, as well as the mesmerizing Boat Flotilla, where boats gather along the Hudson River and move in harmony. The festival will provide ASL interpreters for performances.
Former Men at Work frontman and iconic singer/songwriter Colin Hay announces the upcoming release of Man @ Work Volume 2. The new release is the sequel to his 2003 best seller, Man @ Work, and offers fans an impeccable set of re-imagined favorites from across Hay’s rich catalog, including Men at Work classics, solo album highlights, and new material. Man @ Work Volume 2 is set for release on July 18th.
Hay says: “I started working with Compass Records 22 years ago. The first album of mine they released was Man @ Work. We felt that there is now more to the story. Hence Man @ Work Vol 2. We mined some Men at Work songs, and some solo songs I feel close to. All are re-recorded, and somewhat re-imagined. I like it. Hope you do too.”
The album opens with “Into My Life,” featuring Gregg Bissonette (Ringo Starr and His All Starr Band) and Cecilia Noël. The song originally appeared on Hay’s 1990 debut solo album, Wayfaring Sons, and exploded in Brazil in the 90s as the theme song of a popular soap opera, growing to rival the anthemic “Down Under” as Hay’s most popular song in South America. Hay looks back to Men At Work’s 1983 release, Cargo, for a new recording of the reggae-inflected “Blue for You,” and then segues into a stripped-down take on the infectious “Come Tumblin’ Down” from his 2017 release Fierce Mercy. “We the People,” featuring rapper Derrick “Solpowa” Rice, is a new song that Hay was inspired to write in the midst of the polarizing US presidential election in 2024. The album ends with the haunting “Next Year People,” the title track from his 2015 solo release, featuring Hay on acoustic guitar and vocals, and in this version, augmented by a string quartet.
As the frontman and principal songwriter for ‘80s Australian hit-makers Men At Work, Hay became one of the most recognizable vocalists in pop music with his soaring vocals, infectious melodies, and quizzical lyrics. Classic songs like “Down Under,” “Overkill,” and “Who Can It Be Now?” unfold like miniature movies, with timeless twists and a bittersweet sense of humor. That wry humor has remained a consistent feature of Hay’s solo albums and projects, from his most recent solo release, Now And The Evermore, to international tours as a member of Ringo Starr & His All-Starr Band. A Hay-penned song (“What’s My Name”) not only made its way onto Starr’s 2019 album, but also became the title track.
