5 Glorious Moments in ‘Almost Famous’ That Every Music Fan Will Love

If there’s one film that makes your heart beat like a backstage drum kit and your soul want to scribble lyrics into a beat-up notebook, it’s Almost Famous. Cameron Crowe’s 2000 love letter to music journalism, rock ’n’ roll, and the chaotic beauty of being young and obsessed with sound, is a film that doesn’t just tell a story—it feels like your favorite album. For music fans, it’s the cinematic equivalent of a B-side you can’t believe was never a single.

Here are five unforgettable moments from Almost Famous that will hit you right in the Fender-loving feels:

1. “I Am a Golden God!” – Russell Takes the Plunge

Say it with us: “I am a golden god!” Russell Hammond (Billy Crudup) climbs atop a roof during a wild party and screams this declaration just before jumping into a pool. It’s reckless, hilarious, and the perfect encapsulation of rock star hubris and heart. For anyone who’s dreamed of being larger than life—even for a second—it’s a wild, glorious high note.

Why we love it: It captures the thin line between ego and vulnerability. Russell’s not just yelling into the night—he’s begging to be seen, heard, felt. Just like a great guitar solo.

2. “Tiny Dancer” – The Bus Sing-Along That Heals Everything

This is it. The scene that’s lived rent-free in every music lover’s mind since 2000. After a tense falling out, the band, crew, and William are silently stewing on the tour bus—until Elton John’s “Tiny Dancer” crackles through the speakers. One by one, voices join in. Forgiveness isn’t spoken, it’s sung.

Why we love it: Because it reminds us that music heals. It builds bridges. It turns strangers into bandmates and bandmates into family. No other film has ever nailed the communal magic of a perfect song at the perfect moment quite like this.

3. “You’re Not Cool.” – Lester Bangs Tells the Truth

Philip Seymour Hoffman as real-life rock critic Lester Bangs is one of the greatest casting choices of the 21st century. His monologue to William is both devastating and uplifting. “You’re not cool,” he says, with brutal honesty. “And you never will be.” But that’s the point—because uncool is pure.

Why we love it: It’s the truth every passionate music nerd needs to hear. This is a call to arms for the awkward, the obsessed, the earnest. Cool fades. Love of music doesn’t.

Penny Lane’s Dance in the Empty Arena

After a concert, Penny Lane (Kate Hudson, in the performance of her life) twirls alone in an empty arena, soaked in golden light and the afterglow of the music. It’s a haunting, joyful, bittersweet moment that says everything about living for music—even when it doesn’t love you back.

Why we love it: It’s a visual poem. A love letter to the people who stay after the encore. To the ones who feel most alive when the crowd has gone home, but the stage is still warm.

“It Was All True.” – The Redemption of Rock Journalism

When William’s Rolling Stone article finally gets published—and the band admits that yes, everything he wrote was true—it’s a fist-pump moment not just for the character, but for everyone who’s ever tried to tell the story behind the music. Journalism, baby. It matters.

Why we love it: It validates the entire mission of music writers everywhere: to be honest, to tell the messy truth, and to honor the songs that changed us.

Almost Famous is a mixtape of emotion, memory, and passion for music that never leaves you. If you’ve ever loved a band so much it hurt, or typed out a review at 3am with headphones on and heart full, this movie was made for you.

And hey… if anyone asks, we’re all on the bus.

Kurt Deimer Unleashes ’80s Rock Vibes In New “Sunset Boulevard” Video Ahead Of Debut Album ‘And So It Begins…’

0

As he gears up for the release of his debut album next week, rising rock musician, actor, songwriter, and film producer Kurt Deimer has released the official music video for his newest single “Sunset Boulevard.” The song and its accompanying video, directed by Paul Boyd (Neon Trees, Dave Stewart, Shania Twain), captures the total Sunset Strip ‘80s vibe of rock ‘n’ roll and the many artists that have inspired Deimer throughout his life, with the new video featuring footage from his recent headlining show at The Viper Room. “Sunset Boulevard” is the latest offering from Deimer’s forthcoming debut full-length album, And So It Begins…, out Friday, May 9th via Bald Man Records.

And So It Begins…, produced by five-time GRAMMY-winning producer Chris Lord-Alge (Green Day, Breaking Benjamin) and co-written with Bon Jovi guitarist Phil X, draws on a wealth of life experiences from the Cincinnati native. The 17-track versatile collection covers a ton of stylistic ground – natural for a musician interested in everything from AC/DC to R.E.M. to Widespread Panic – and offers an overarching message of optimism.

Recent single “Live Or Die” is a powerful statement on living one’s truest life by taking the chances that matter most, while the moody epic “Big Toe” is a song of hope elevated by the drama of Deimer’s husky and uniquely deep register. And So It Begins… also features the previously released singles “Dance,” “Hero” and “Fight” and a guest appearance from Queensrÿche legend Geoff Tate, with the expressive guitar work of Phil X heard throughout the expansive and cinematic rock spectacle.

Deimer and his impressive band Sammy Boller [lead guitar], Brendan Hengle [rhythm guitar], Marco Pera [bass/background vocals], and Isaiah Perez [drums]) are currently showcasing the songs from And So It Begins… on an extensive Canadian tour supporting Buckcherry and Steel Panther. Following its wrap in mid-May, Deimer will open for classic rockers TESLA on select dates in June.

In a few short years, Kurt Deimer has made a name for himself in the hard rock scene with his headbanging guitar riffs and socially conscious, anthemic lyrics. His rise in the music industry began when Brian Wheat of TESLA was so impressed by Deimer’s live performance and music while watching him open for the iconic band that Wheat invited Deimer to join TESLA on the road. This opportunity fueled Deimer’s passion to push his music career further, leading to the release of his debut EP, Work Hard, Rock Hard, in late 2021. The acclaimed collection – hailed by Metal-Rules as “a fierce and diverse EP with no filler songs or shortage of big riffs, blues bravado vocals, and brilliant guitar playing” and by Sonic Perspectives as “a colossal display of raw intensity” – launched the powerful musical partnership of Deimer and Phil X, combining Deimer’s anthemic vocals with Phil X’s thunderous riffs.

Deimer has spent the last few years relentlessly touring, sharing the stage with other major acts including Geoff Tate, Drowning Pool, Skid Row, Buckcherry, and Sebastian Bach and recently appeared on the Monsters of Rock Cruise. In addition to his growing music career, the multi-talent and successful businessman is a flourishing actor, spearheading his own horror movie franchise “Hellbilly Hollow” as both star and producer. Deimer’s acting career took off when he appeared in John Carpenter’s 2018 “Halloween,” portraying a pivotal role alongside Jamie Lee Curtis and facing off against the infamous Michael Myers as the teller. His latest feature film is “Scared To Death” (2024), written and directed by music video veteran Paul Boyd (Neon Trees, Dave Stewart, Shania Twain).

Peter Gabriel Calls the Synthesizer a ‘Dream Machine’ in 1983 BBC Interview

0

“It’s something of a dream machine,” said Peter Gabriel in 1983, staring down the future of music. On BBC’s RPM, Gabriel and futurist Ray Hammond talked synths, imagination, and the rise of home music-making. One saw endless creative potential. The other saw the end of the session drummer. Either way, they both saw a revolution coming.

Indie Rock Vets We Are Scientists Lean Into Power Ballad Glory on ‘I Could Do Much Worse’

0

We Are Scientists – comprising founding members Keith Murray and Chris Cain – unveil “I Could Do Much Worse,” the second single from their forthcoming album Qualifying Miles. A melancholic power ballad, the track begins with shimmering, propulsive guitar work that crescendos into an anthemic chorus and soaring solo. The release marks a rare moment where the band leans fully into a minor-key ballad. Lyrically it explores the lingering weight of life’s missteps and the power of emotional reckoning.

Speaking on the track, Keith offers: “Remember when rock bands made all their money and bought all of their houses and helicopters and ski-doos off the back of their smash-hit power ballads? Our public-facing band persona is so founded in high-energy party vibes that we’re never really given the stylistic leeway to publicly lean into our own power ballads. We’ve always been writing them – I’d argue there’s at least one PB on every last We Are Scientists record, and we in the band always vote that they ought to be singles. It’s nice to finally be giving one of their ilk a little time in the spotlight to tan its wan little face.

“While I was writing ‘I Could Do Much Worse,’ I initially thought it was a morose number. It’s mid-tempo, minor key, kinda emo. The longer I’ve lived with it, though, the more I’m learning that the swelling emotion that drives it is a sort of epistemic wave – you can surf it, or just kinda get tossed underneath it and end up with a face full of coral and shrimp.

“I guess I originally read ‘I Could Do Much Worse’ as a lament, but sometimes when you look back on mistakes that you’ve made, you clock how much you’ve actually learned from those foibles and come to realize that sometimes the most egregious of errors can be the greatest of skeleton keys. You know what they say: you can’t make an omelet without getting egg all over your face.”

Mark Pritchard and Thom Yorke Launch “Tall Tales” Coin Hunt With Short Film Reveal

0

Over recent weeks, fans of Mark Pritchard, Thom Yorke and visual collaborator Jonathan Zawada discovered an Instagram profile for a mysterious metalsmith going by the name of Marien Marcel. The account showed development sketches for the visual world of Tall Tales – the new album from Pritchard and Yorke, released on Friday, 9th May – leading to speculation that this account was run by someone inside the project. The account also seemed to show the process of the melting down of fake works of art, purchased on eBay, and the subsequent forging of coins from the molten bronze. Fans have now started to discover these coins appearing in the real world.

Today, Mark Pritchard, Thom Yorke and Jonathan Zawada unveil Tall Tales: The Coins (Forge, Reforge, Forgery), a short film documenting the crafting of these coins. It forms part of the third element to the ”Tall Tales” project, following the album released last week, and the film premiered in cinemas on Thursday, 8th May.

Acting as breadcrumbs, leading the curious and willing to the stories, influences and layers of meaning embedded in the world of ”Tall Tales”, there are 400 hand-finished and individually numbered coins dispersed around the world and being hidden by a growing band of accomplices, so far including The Gallows Pole author Benjamin Myers and numerous record stores.

Lucky fans who find a coin can register their discovery coins and 71 have already been found all around the world in locations such as cemeteries, historic landmarks, nature reserves, and more.

“Tall Tales”, the new album from Mark Pritchard and Thom Yorke is now available in a standard black vinyl 2LP gatefold edition and as a limited special black vinyl 2LP edition including a 36-page booklet featuring a wealth of images from the project and lyrics to all the tracks, carefully designed by Jonathan Zawada. Order HERE.

Sinsaenum Return With Blistering New Single “In Devastation” Honoring Joey Jordison

0

Extreme metal supergroup Sinsaenum have announced their long-awaited return with the release of their crushing new single, “In Devastation,” the title track of their forthcoming third studio album, due out later this year via earMUSIC.

The release marks the band’s first new material since the tragic passing of legendary drummer Joey Jordison (Slipknot, Murderdolls) in 2021. Both the single and album serve as a cathartic tribute to Jordison and to guitarist and founder Frederic Leclercq’s late father, whose deaths profoundly shaped the emotional and creative direction of the project.

“I was devastated, hence the title of this album,” Leclercq explains. “But we knew we had to carry on. This record is our tribute to my father, to Joey, and to anyone who’s ever had to find strength in their darkest moments.”

In Devastation is a 10-track tour de force of blackened death metal infused with Sinsaenum’s signature melodic ferocity and experimental edge. Produced and mixed by acclaimed German audio engineer Lasse Lammert, the album explores new sonic territory for the band, blending intricate progressive elements, clean vocals, and even cello – without ever compromising their brutal core.

Joining Leclercq on this latest chapter are returning members Attila Csihar (Mayhem), Sean Zatorsky (Daath), Stephane Buriez (Loudblast), and Heimoth (Seth). Stepping in behind the kit is Andre Joyzi, formerly Jordison’s tech and a trusted member of the band’s touring family – chosen not only for his skills, but for the emotional connection he brings to continuing Jordison’s legacy.

Tracks like “Obsolete and Broken” and “The Last Goodbye” showcase the band’s musical and emotional evolution, from raw aggression to haunting reflection. Leclercq describes the latter as “the most personal we’ve done,” while songs like “Shades of Black” and “Over the Red Wall” push the band into new anthemic and speed-driven territory.

Following the critically acclaimed Echoes of the Tortured (2016) and Repulsion for Humanity (2018), In Devastation cements Sinsaenum’s place at the vanguard of modern metal – a band forged in grief but fueled by defiance.

Steve Miller to Receive Les Paul Spirit Award at Gibson Garage Ceremony

0

The Les Paul Foundation, whose mission is to honor and share the life, spirit and legacy of Les Paul through generations has announced the annual Les Paul Spirit Award in partnership with Gibson Gives, the philanthropic division of Gibson. The prestigious award will be presented to legendary musical artist and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Steve Miller on Monday, June 9, 2024 at 6:30pm CT at a private ticketed event held at the Gibson Garage Nashville located at 209 10th Ave S, Suite 209 in downtown Nashville, TN.

The event will take place on what would have been Les Paul’s 110th birthday, and marks the fourth anniversary of the Gibson Garage Nashville. The Les Paul Spirit Award was created by the Les Paul Foundation in honor of the music innovator.

The annual award is presented to an individual who exemplifies the spirit of the late, great Les Paul through innovation, engineering, technology and/or music. In addition to the award, a grant from the Les Paul Foundation will be made in the honoree’s name to the charity of his choice. Like Les Paul, Steve Miller personifies the spirit of excellence through musicianship and industry recognition.

“I cannot think of anyone more deserving to be honored with the Les Paul Spirit Award than Steve Miller. Not only is he an extraordinary talent and a wonderful friend of the Les Paul Foundation, Steve holds the very distinct title of being Les’ godson. They had a very unique relationship which Les cherished. If anyone understands the “spirit” of Les Paul, it’s Steve,” says Michael Braunstein, Executive Director of The Les Paul Foundation. “If Les were still alive today, Steve and he would be jamming at his house regularly. I am personally thrilled to be able to present Steve with this award because I know he exemplifies everything Les was about and wanted to accomplish. I want to also thank the Gibson Gives Foundation for partnering with us on this exciting annual award and for everything they do to keep Les’ name alive.”

“At Gibson Gives, we are thrilled to celebrate the incredible contributions of Les Paul and partner with the Les Paul Foundation to bring awareness to Les Paul’s legacy as he continues to inspire musicians across generations and genres.” –Beth Heidt, Chief Marketing Officer at Gibson

“Steve Miller personifies the spirit of excellence through his musicianship and industry recognition. Gibson Gives is proud to partner with the Les Paul Foundation to present the prestigious Les Paul Spirit Award to this legendary artist who not only embodies the innovative spirit of Les Paul himself and his landmark contributions to music but continues to entertain and inspire us through his music and talent.” –Erica Krusen, Global Executive Director at Gibson Gives

Steve Miller has been a monumental presence on the American music scene for over half a century and his releases have sold tens of millions of records and been streamed billions of times. Miller’s Greatest Hits (1974-1978) received the RIAA Diamond Award with sales of over 15 million copies. It is among the 25 top best-selling albums of all time. If one would run through Miller’s music catalog they would quickly recognize his influences – his parents were jazz aficionados and personal friends of Les Paul and Mary Ford. As a budding guitarist, Steve absorbed every lesson or piece of advice Les Paul gave him. Miller played with Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, James Cotton and Paul Butterfield, all of whom inform his music to this day.

Miller’s hits include “The Joker,” “Take the Money and Run,” “Abracadabra,” “Rock’n Me,” “Jet Airliner,” “Swingtown,” “Fly Like an Eagle,” and others. The album “Fly Like an Eagle” was recently inducted to the Library of Congress’s National Recording Registry. To this day these songs are instantly recognizable and impossible not to sing along with.

Miller was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (2016) and the Songwriters Hall of Fame (2022) and is a member of the Visiting Committee of the Department of Musical Instruments at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and is a member of the Board of Directors at Jazz at Lincoln Center. On last year’s Steve Miller Band tour he played to three quarters of a million fans and returned to the top of the charts with his hit “Abracadabra” via the prominent feature in “Eminem’s” hit single “Houdini.”

Steve’s relationship with Les Paul was deeply personal and formative. Les Paul was not only a family friend but also became Miller’s godfather as noted above. Their connection began in Miller’s early childhood in Milwaukee, where his parents frequently attended Les Paul and Mary Ford’s performances. A young Steve Miller was introduced to Les Paul who gave him his first informal guitar lessons and taught him his first three chords. Miller has often recalled how these early experiences watching Les Paul perform and receiving personal instruction were pivotal in inspiring his own musical journey. To understand how close the two families were, Steve’s father “Sonny” was even the best man at Les Paul’s wedding. Miller joined Les Paul on stage at his 90th birthday concert in New York city highlighting their enduring bond. Steve continues to enthrall his audiences with stories like these at his performances.

The exclusive, physical Les Paul Spirit Award for Steve Miller is made from actual hand-carved acoustic boards built by Les Paul that he used in his home studio. Les Paul designed and created the memorabilia during his life. The acoustic wood piece is a unique presentation and supported by Les’ personal story. No two Les Paul Spirit Awards are exactly the same given the unique nature of the studio pieces which are being used to create them and their intrinsic value as authentic Les Paul memorabilia. Past recipients of the award have included Bob Weir (founding member of The Grateful Dead), producer and musician Nile Rodgers, U2’s the Edge and Peter Frampton.
