Steve Miller to Receive Les Paul Spirit Award at Gibson Garage Ceremony

0

The Les Paul Foundation, whose mission is to honor and share the life, spirit and legacy of Les Paul through generations has announced the annual Les Paul Spirit Award in partnership with Gibson Gives, the philanthropic division of Gibson. The prestigious award will be presented to legendary musical artist and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee Steve Miller on Monday, June 9, 2024 at 6:30pm CT at a private ticketed event held at the Gibson Garage Nashville located at 209 10th Ave S, Suite 209 in downtown Nashville, TN.

The event will take place on what would have been Les Paul’s 110th birthday, and marks the fourth anniversary of the Gibson Garage Nashville. The Les Paul Spirit Award was created by the Les Paul Foundation in honor of the music innovator.

The annual award is presented to an individual who exemplifies the spirit of the late, great Les Paul through innovation, engineering, technology and/or music. In addition to the award, a grant from the Les Paul Foundation will be made in the honoree’s name to the charity of his choice. Like Les Paul, Steve Miller personifies the spirit of excellence through musicianship and industry recognition.

“I cannot think of anyone more deserving to be honored with the Les Paul Spirit Award than Steve Miller. Not only is he an extraordinary talent and a wonderful friend of the Les Paul Foundation, Steve holds the very distinct title of being Les’ godson. They had a very unique relationship which Les cherished. If anyone understands the “spirit” of Les Paul, it’s Steve,” says Michael Braunstein, Executive Director of The Les Paul Foundation. “If Les were still alive today, Steve and he would be jamming at his house regularly. I am personally thrilled to be able to present Steve with this award because I know he exemplifies everything Les was about and wanted to accomplish. I want to also thank the Gibson Gives Foundation for partnering with us on this exciting annual award and for everything they do to keep Les’ name alive.”

“At Gibson Gives, we are thrilled to celebrate the incredible contributions of Les Paul and partner with the Les Paul Foundation to bring awareness to Les Paul’s legacy as he continues to inspire musicians across generations and genres.” –Beth Heidt, Chief Marketing Officer at Gibson

“Steve Miller personifies the spirit of excellence through his musicianship and industry recognition. Gibson Gives is proud to partner with the Les Paul Foundation to present the prestigious Les Paul Spirit Award to this legendary artist who not only embodies the innovative spirit of Les Paul himself and his landmark contributions to music but continues to entertain and inspire us through his music and talent.” –Erica Krusen, Global Executive Director at Gibson Gives

Steve Miller has been a monumental presence on the American music scene for over half a century and his releases have sold tens of millions of records and been streamed billions of times. Miller’s Greatest Hits (1974-1978) received the RIAA Diamond Award with sales of over 15 million copies. It is among the 25 top best-selling albums of all time. If one would run through Miller’s music catalog they would quickly recognize his influences – his parents were jazz aficionados and personal friends of Les Paul and Mary Ford. As a budding guitarist, Steve absorbed every lesson or piece of advice Les Paul gave him. Miller played with Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, James Cotton and Paul Butterfield, all of whom inform his music to this day.

Miller’s hits include “The Joker,” “Take the Money and Run,” “Abracadabra,” “Rock’n Me,” “Jet Airliner,” “Swingtown,” “Fly Like an Eagle,” and others. The album “Fly Like an Eagle” was recently inducted to the Library of Congress’s National Recording Registry. To this day these songs are instantly recognizable and impossible not to sing along with.

Miller was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (2016) and the Songwriters Hall of Fame (2022) and is a member of the Visiting Committee of the Department of Musical Instruments at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and is a member of the Board of Directors at Jazz at Lincoln Center. On last year’s Steve Miller Band tour he played to three quarters of a million fans and returned to the top of the charts with his hit “Abracadabra” via the prominent feature in “Eminem’s” hit single “Houdini.”

Steve’s relationship with Les Paul was deeply personal and formative. Les Paul was not only a family friend but also became Miller’s godfather as noted above. Their connection began in Miller’s early childhood in Milwaukee, where his parents frequently attended Les Paul and Mary Ford’s performances. A young Steve Miller was introduced to Les Paul who gave him his first informal guitar lessons and taught him his first three chords. Miller has often recalled how these early experiences watching Les Paul perform and receiving personal instruction were pivotal in inspiring his own musical journey. To understand how close the two families were, Steve’s father “Sonny” was even the best man at Les Paul’s wedding. Miller joined Les Paul on stage at his 90th birthday concert in New York city highlighting their enduring bond. Steve continues to enthrall his audiences with stories like these at his performances.

The exclusive, physical Les Paul Spirit Award for Steve Miller is made from actual hand-carved acoustic boards built by Les Paul that he used in his home studio. Les Paul designed and created the memorabilia during his life. The acoustic wood piece is a unique presentation and supported by Les’ personal story. No two Les Paul Spirit Awards are exactly the same given the unique nature of the studio pieces which are being used to create them and their intrinsic value as authentic Les Paul memorabilia. Past recipients of the award have included Bob Weir (founding member of The Grateful Dead), producer and musician Nile Rodgers, U2’s the Edge and Peter Frampton.

Janet Jackson Celebrates Viral Revival of “Someone to Call My Lover” in New Vevo Footnotes

0

Vevo and Janet Jackson premiered a new episode of Footnotes celebrating her beloved hit “Someone to Call My Lover,” the second single from her seventh studio album, All For You. The episode arrives amid the song’s viral resurgence and ahead of Jackson being honored with the Icon Award at the 2025 American Music Awards.

The episode gives fans a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of the track and the creative choices that shaped its timeless sound, which blends two iconic samples: the guitar riff from America’s 1972 classic “Ventura Highway” and a sped-up melody from Erik Satie’s “Gymnopedie No.1.”

Initially, Janet didn’t recognize “Ventura Highway” when producer Jimmy Jam played it in the studio. However, she recalled hearing “Gymnopedie No.1” in a commercial during her childhood. The episode also reveals that her son now loves the song and sometimes falls asleep to it. Janet first sang the vocal melody over the phone to Jimmy Jam. Reflecting on the lyrics, Jackson says the song is “really about the next person you want to be with and call yours.”

More than two decades after its release, “Someone to Call My Lover” has found new life online, leading to a 600% surge in daily streams and earning a spot in the encore section of her 2024 tour, marking a rare return of the track to her live set.

Suwannee Roots Revival Returns With Oteil & Friends, Yonder Mountain String Band, and More

0

The 9th Suwannee Roots Revival takes place Thursday, October 9 through Sunday, October 12 at the renowned Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park (SOSMP) in Live Oak, Florida. Fostering the longtime tradition of hosting some of the most prominent names in American roots music and beyond, this four-day camping family-friendly music festival includes camping, music workshops, kids’ activities, arts & crafts, and daily yoga.

Nestled in 800 acres of gorgeous Spanish moss-draped oak and cypress trees along the Suwannee River in northern Florida, Suwannee Roots Revival celebrates community-based fun, growing friendships, laughing families, and the joy you get from making memories with friends old and new.

The festival has announced the 2025 lineup, which includes Oteil & Friends (featuring Melvin Seals, Steve Kimock, Jason Crosby, Johnny Kimock, Tom Guarna & Lamar Williams Jr.), Yonder Mountain String Band, Donna the Buffalo (all 4 days), Peter Rowan & The Walls of Time Band, Jim Lauderdale & The Game Changers, Della Mae, Seth Walker, Henhouse Prowlers, Walter Parks & The Unlawful Assembly, Ain’t Sisters, Jon Stickley Trio, The Lee Boys, John Mailander’s Forecast (as well as Mailander being Artist at Large), and more!

Suwannee Roots Revival focuses on showcasing established and emerging roots musicians throughout the weekend. The lineup includes performers with long histories of epic Suwannee performances along with a history of showcasing some surprise one-of-a-kind collaborations—you never know who will give a surprise sit-in on stage (or in the campgrounds for that matter). There is an open call to play in the many campground pickin’ party sites throughout the weekend, including at Slopryland, hosted by Sloppy Joe, and the Bill Monroe Shrine, hosted by Quartermoon.

With many acts playing multiple times, music will be staged in a variety of areas, including the newly renamed Big Cosmo’s Amphitheater, Dance Tent, Music Hall, and the Music Farmers Stage at The Back Porch.

Big Cosmo’s Amphitheater is nestled in a tree-filled natural amphitheater, adding to the magic through the beautiful setting. The Dance Tent is a fantastic spot to immerse yourself in the music and, new to this year, has been relocated a bit closer to the Vendor Village for added convenience! The Music Hall remains an excellent spot for special indoor listening experiences with stage lighting, air conditioning, and a cafe.

Suwannee Roots Revival is excited about the new Music Farmers Stage at The Back Porch—a “VIP section for everyone.” This new music area debuted at Roots’s sister festival, Suwannee Spring Reunion, which takes place in March. The Back Porch (formerly backstage of The Porch Stage) will be open from the start of the music until the end of each night’s performances, providing plenty of seating options for relaxation, food from delicious vendors nearby, and live video feeds from Big Cosmo’s Amphitheater to ensure you don’t miss any of the action. It will have a full bar set up, and many interesting vending selections nearby.

Special performances will take place at The Back Porch during the evening. The Music Farmers Stage’s new location inside the former Porch Stage building, is a bigger and more comfortable location to host a wide range of hand-on workshops.

The Vendor Village will feature a diverse range of arts and crafts, as well as culinary delights ranging from healthy to decadent. The park itself is a place where children of all ages can rediscover (or discover for the first time) why they fell in love with the Spirit of the Suwannee Music Park’s magical mixture of sights, sounds, and sensations that make for a weekend of paradise.

Tickets are on sale now. Suwannee Roots Revival offers a multi-day Weekend Ticket that includes festival admission for four days of music, as well as primitive camping on Thursday-Sunday nights. Military and Student discounts are available. Children 12 and under are free if accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. For complete ticket information, visit suwanneerootsrevival.com/tickets.

Chapel Hart and Home Free Go All-In With Country-Fried “Texas Hold ’Em” Cover

0

Acclaimed country trio Chapel Hart-known for their joyous vocal blend and proudly independent point of view-are rolling into summer with a just-released new collaborative single/video, tour dates, and two CMA Fest shows, plus an Opry at the Ryman – Opry 100 performance. Sisters Danica and Devynn Hart, along with their cousin Trea Swindle, have earned national and global attention with their three albums-Out The Mud, The Girls Are Back In Town, and most recently, Glory Days-and they’re now excitingly building a new momentum.

Chapel Hart joined forces with country’s only all-vocal band Home Free to go all-in for a good-time new collab, sharing a jackpot cover of Beyonce’s “Texas Hold ‘Em.”

“Texas Hold ‘Em” is built around a royal flush of vocal mastery; the energetic cover highlights a playful back and forth between two fan-favorite groups. HOME FREE give the track a hard-to-beat mix of snappy rhythm and bright harmony, while CHAPEL HART raise the stakes, showing off their delightful three-of-a-kind blend. And no one is bluffing about their talent.

The dream-team collaboration was inspired after CHAPEL HART shared a CMA red carpet with Home Free and witnessed the band’s impromptu “Texas Hold ‘Em” rendition.

“From the very first time we met Home Free at the Alabama June Jam, we insisted that we do a project together one day, AND THE DAY HAS COME!” says CHAPEL HART’s Danica Hart. “We saw them sing this song on [the CMA] red carpet and thought ‘What a cool a cappella rendition!’ And when they said, ‘Chapel Hart…Let’s make this BIGGER,’ we said ‘Yes!’

“We didn’t know what to expect shuffling eight voices and personalities on one song, but WOW!” she goes on. “Adding a little spice to the flour and oil Home Free already had in the pan, it’s safe to say we cooked up a country-fried cover we know y’all will love as much as we do!”

Meanwhile, an official music video ups the fun-loving ante, showing fast friends ready to throw (the chips) down. Directed by Jimmy Bates, the dive-bar romper captures a rowdy night of harmony and howling at the moon, living it up in the song’s go-for-broke style. Full of singing, dancing and getting the party started, both bands celebrate feeling lucky to be alive in a clip praised by the Queen B’s mom herself, Tina Knowles.

The Kentucky Gentlemen Release Soulful Farewell Ballad “To The Moon” Ahead of Debut Album

0

Twin-brother country duo The Kentucky Gentlemen share “To The Moon,” a soulful country ballad with background vocals from their friend Brittney Spencer. Accompanied by a music video with footage of all three vocalists recording in the studio, this is the final single released ahead of the pair’s full-length debut album Rhinestone Revolution (out June 6 on River House Artists).

The Kentucky Gentlemen on their new song: “‘To The Moon’ reflects the bittersweet emotions you feel when nearing the end of your relationship. It’s a farewell drenched in nostalgia, love, and reflection, but most importantly acceptance. Within those emotions you often get the desire to make that last night together feel like something extraordinary – one last time to relive the beautiful moments and show each other what could’ve been before the inevitable goodbye. This song carries both a sense of closure and the aching recognition that this love has reached its final chapter…and that’s okay.”

The Kentucky Gentlemen have been making their way in Nashville’s country music scene as independent artists for the last decade while simultaneously embracing, defying, and expanding the constructs of genre. Recorded with producer David “Messy” Mescon (Megan Moroney, Nicki Minaj and Ariana Grande, Reyna Roberts), Rhinestone Revolution encapsulates the infectious blend of authenticity, self-acceptance and joy that has led them to quickly become one of Nashville’s most exciting new acts. The album is already garnering early praise for its singles, including “Made for Movin’ On,” which Rolling Stone called “a catchy mid-tempo country-rocker that contains layers of depth,” and “Country Hymn,” which prompted MusicRow to declare “These guys always know how to bring the party.” “To The Moon” follows their latest single, “Whiskey Does” a boot-scootin’ drinkin’ song that Wide Open Country called “fun, upbeat, and an overall banger.”

Rhinestone Revolution further expands on the eclectic sound that has been at the open-hearted center of The Kentucky Gentlemen’s music, which Billboard described as a “potent blend of pop, country and R&B, built around tightly-fused, unmistakable blood harmonies.” Recently featured at Ebony Magazine, the duo has taken their act across some of the biggest stages in country music, from Bourbon & Beyond to the Newport Folk Festival, toured with The War & Treaty, and collaborated with artists like Fancy Hagood (“Better Man”) and Will Hoge (“Can I Be Country, Too?”). They have been named one of GLAAD’s “New Voices in Country Music,” and “Artists to Watch” by NPR, BET and Nashville Scene. Rhinestone Revolution follows the pair’s 2022 debut EP The Kentucky Gentlemen: Vol. 1, featuring the breakout song “Whatever You’re Up For” which Rolling Stone called “the most compelling commercial-country slow jam of the year.”

Later this month, the duo will perform a Songwriter Session at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum on May 31. They have also announced a special album release party on June 6 at The Blue Room in Nashville, TN.

The Kentucky Gentlemen 2025 Tour Dates:
May 31 – Nashville, TN @ Country Music Hall of Fame Songwriter Session
June 2 – Nashville, TN @ Concert For Love + Acceptance
June 6 – Nashville, TN @ Rhinestone Revolution Album Release Party
June 19 – Lexington, KY @ Soulfeast Week

Think:X, the genre-defying musical collective that reimagines the work of Pink Floyd through a darker, heavier lens, is happy to announce their fall U.S. tour run. Presented by Anatomy of Sound, the tour begins in Washington, DC on October 5th. Tickets go on sale at 10am eastern on Friday May 23rd.

More than a band, Think: X is an experience—blending electrifying live performances with deep improvisation and a bold reinterpretation of one of rock’s most iconic catalogs.

Stephen Perkins, drummer for Jane’s Addiction and Porno for Pyros, delivers polyrhythmic intensity and a rhythmic storytelling sensibility that drives the band’s dynamic energy.
Will Champlin, Grammy-winning songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, adds rich melodic textures and soaring vocals. Son of Chicago’s Bill Champlin, and known for his work with One Direction, Will blends pop sensibility with a rock foundation.

Gen X Icon Evan Dando to Release Candid Memoir on Fame, Music, and Mayhem

0

Evan Dando, front man of The Lemonheads and “poster boy—and prettiest boy—of Gen X” (The New York Times), spills the true story of his band’s tumultuous history and what it was like to be famous in the pre-internet days in this candid, colorful, and unputdownable memoir.

After Kurt Cobain’s passing in 1994, everyone expected Evan Dando to be next. The Lemonheads front man, songwriter and actor started in the ’80s hardcore scene and went on to become a ’90s icon. Think of Evan Dando, and you think of heroin chic, grunge, and celebrity burnout. Perhaps known as much for his partying and boyish good looks, after two gold records and the kind of fame that you just can’t enjoy anymore, the Lemonheads cooled off and life went on.

Dando grew up in Boston, the son of a lawyer and a model, and attended the prestigious Commonwealth School. Fame was never what motivated him but the lure of the wild life proved trickier to refuse. From sneaking into concerts as a child, to sleeping on floors in the punk rock days, to crashing at Johnny Depp’s place in Hollywood, he was right there in the thick of it. So much so, that social media once reported his death.

Now, very much alive, sober, and enjoying a life in South America when he’s not on the road, Evan Dando is going to tell his own story. His memoir will remind readers what was so great about the pre-internet ’90s: the innocence, the access, and the anonymity. Reclaiming the purity and exuberance of his early days and encapsulating the spirit of the era, this candid autobiography presents a portrait of an artist who lives wholly for his music, and one that makes no apologies for doing so.

Colombian Psych-Funk Trio BALTHVS Return With Introspective Grooves on ‘Flesh and Soul’

0

Colombian psych-funk trio BALTHVS return with “Flesh and Soul,” the new single dropping on June 13th, 2025 via Mixto Records.  “Flesh and Soul” explores the delicate balance between youthful ambition and the sobering weight of adulthood. Pre-save here

“The song is a spiritual continuation of ‘Year of the Snake’,” the band shares. “It reflects a year of deep transformation—for us as a group, and individually. It also signals a new beginning.”

The “Flesh and Soul” is a four-track collection of introspective grooves and hypnotic rhythms. The title track moves with a melancholic pulse, intimate yet cinematic in scope. Also featured is “Mood Swing (Principles of Rhythm),” a track that kicked off the year for BALTHVS with a signature fusion of laid-back psych textures and disco-tinged momentum.

“I feel the future is shrouded in uncertainty,” says Balthazar, the band’s founding guitarist and creative lead. “But I cope through the discipline of work. Music remains our sanctuary – a place of resilience, escape, and hope.”

Other highlights include “Year of the Snake,” a swirling, synth-laced meditation on growth, aligning with the Chinese zodiac’s symbol of transformation, and “Kilig” – a bright, euphoric track written in just three days between tour dates, inspired by the Tagalog word for joyful excitement that demands to be danced.

“Flesh and Soul” arrives at a pivotal moment for the band. Following five years of non-stop touring and standout festival appearances – including Outside Lands, Electric Forest, Lollapalooza Chile & Argentina, and SXSW – BALTHVS are set to expand their live presence across North America this summer.

They’ll join genre-blending funk pioneers Lettuce for a run of U.S. dates, followed by select autumn shows supporting My Morning Jacket. Festival highlights include BottleRock Napa (23 May), Lightning In A Bottle (25 May), Electric Forest (19 June), Nelsonville Festival (20 June), Green River Festival (22 June), and Montreal Jazz Festival (26 June).

In just five years, BALTHVS has become one of indie music’s most vital and globally resonant voices. With over 45 million streams, 10,000 vinyls sold, and performances in 56 cities across 19 countries, they’ve earned spots on stages from Austin City Limits to SXSW Sydney, while garnering praise from KEXP, BBC Radio, and Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide FM.

Hailing from Colombia, BALTHVS is a three-piece psychedelic funk rock band creating groove-driven, atmospheric music that draws from global influences. Their sound fuses the spirit of 70s psychedelia with funk, Latin rhythms, and ambient texture. Inspired by artists like Santana, Khruangbin, Thievery Corporation, and The Grateful Dead, BALTHVS create music that feels both nostalgic and forward-thinking — a guitar-driven psychedelic funk rock experience that is unmistakably their own.

At the heart of the group is Balthazar Aguirre, a self-taught guitarist who started down his musical path after a near death rock climbing accident. The incident opened his eyes to his true passion – music – driving him to leave behind his life as a lawyer and form Balthvs. He is joined by fellow musicians and funk enthusiasts Vanessa Muñoz, the bassist, and Santiago Lizcano, the drummer.

Known for their prolific output and ever changing setlists, BALTHVS maintains a steady release schedule – often recording full tracks in single takes. Their fourth studio album, Harvest, marked a shift from solo production to a fully collaborative process, recorded during a month-long residency on a farm in Colombia.

In a landscape dominated by trends, BALTHVS offers something timeless. With a clear artistic identity, a loyal and growing fanbase, and a relentless commitment to creativity, they are carving out a unique space in the global psychedelic and indie funk scenes – one track, and one show, at a time.

The “Flesh and Soul” release drops June 13th on all major platforms. Pre-save here.
