5 Surprising Facts About The Beatles’ ‘Help!’

When The Beatles released Help! in 1965, it wasn’t just another album — it was a massive leap forward. It was the soundtrack to a movie, a collection of irresistible pop songs, and a window into the rapidly evolving creative world of John, Paul, George, and Ringo. Over the decades, it’s become a classic, but Help! still holds some wonderful secrets that even die-hard fans might not know. Let’s dive into 5 little-known facts about Help! — and celebrate the album that gave us hits, heartbreak, and history.

1. “Help!” Was John Lennon’s Real Cry For… Help
Sure, it sounds upbeat, but John Lennon later admitted that “Help!” wasn’t just a catchy song title — it was a literal cry for help. As the Beatles’ fame exploded, Lennon found himself overwhelmed, unhappy with his weight, and emotionally drained. He said it was one of the most honest songs he ever wrote, expressing vulnerability at a time when rock stars were supposed to look invincible. It’s a reminder that sometimes the brightest melodies come from the darkest places.

2. The Album Cover Doesn’t Actually Spell ‘HELP!’ In Semaphore
At first glance, it looks like the Beatles are spelling out H-E-L-P with their arms. But guess what? They aren’t! Photographer Robert Freeman originally tried to have them form the letters properly using semaphore, but it didn’t look visually pleasing. So instead, they improvised the arm positions purely based on what looked best. In true Beatles fashion, even their “mistakes” became iconic.

3. “Yesterday” Was Almost Called… “Scrambled Eggs”
Yes, you read that right. When Paul McCartney first dreamed up the melody for “Yesterday,” he didn’t have any lyrics yet — so he jokingly sang, “Scrambled eggs / Oh my baby how I love your legs.” He carried around the melody for months, asking friends if they recognized it (worried he’d unconsciously copied it). When no one claimed it, he finally penned the timeless lyrics we know today. And somewhere out there, “Scrambled Eggs” almost became the most covered song in history!

4. George Harrison’s “I Need You” Introduced A New Sound
George Harrison’s contribution to Help! was groundbreaking in its own quiet way. “I Need You” marked the Beatles’ first use of a volume/tone pedal on guitar, giving the song its distinctive wavering sound. It was a small touch with a big impact — a hint that George was growing into a songwriter and sonic innovator who would eventually shape the band’s sound in beautiful and unexpected ways.

5. Half The Album Was Recorded While The Beatles Were High On Cannabis
Influenced by Bob Dylan (who famously introduced them to cannabis), the Beatles embraced marijuana during the making of Help!. John Lennon said that “You’ve Got To Hide Your Love Away” and other tracks reflected a new kind of emotional depth — a vulnerability that hadn’t appeared in their earlier pop songs. The music got a little more introspective, the lyrics a little more raw, and the Beatles began to move from lovable moptops toward the cultural revolutionaries they’d soon become.

Help! is one of those albums that still feels as fresh today as it did nearly 60 years ago. It’s full of stories, experimentation, and that unbeatable Beatles magic — all wrapped in joy, sadness, and everything in between. Whether you’re cranking up “Ticket to Ride” or letting “Yesterday” tug at your heartstrings, every listen reveals something new. That’s the wonder of Help! — it always shows up right when we need it most.

The Minus 5 Share “Let The Rope Hold, Cassie Lee” Ahead of New Album ‘Oar On, Penelope!’

0

Indie power-pop rock collective The Minus 5, lead by legendary musician and songwriter Scott McCaughey, share the third single and video, “Let The Rope Hold, Cassie Lee” from Oar On, Penelope! out May 30 on Yep Roc Records.

Named the “Coolest Song in the World” by SiriusXM’s Little Steven’s Underground Garage, of ”‘Let The Rope Hold, Cassie Lee,” frontman Scott McCaughey says: “Inspired to come up with a sideways ‘Little Black Egg,’ this came in handy at the end of the long day’s recording. When mutiny was threatened, my assurance that if the gang could last just one more song, it would most assuredly be a One Take Wonder. It had to be; it was. We’re all hanging on to our memories by a thread, but the thread can be pretty strong. ‘Time gets fatter on its own decay…’ Speaking of IN ROCK, Peter grabbed the bass on these sessions and just played superbly throughout, in-the-pocket Musicmaster-style.” Directed and photographed by McCaughey, the lyric video is entirely composed of album covers from his record collection that influenced the song.

Produced by Scott McCaughey and mixed by legendary engineer Ed Stasium (The Replacements, Ramones, Talking Heads), Oar On, Penelope! is The Minus 5’s first album of all-original material in five years and features help from some of his most trusted allies: Peter Buck (R.E.M.), Patterson Hood (Drive-By Truckers), Debbi Peterson (The Bangles), Kurt Bloch (The Fastbacks), Linda Pitmon (Baseball Project, Filthy Friends), and Spencer Tweedy.

Previous singles include, “Words & Birds,“ “a power-pop gem” (American Songwriter), is a raucous ode to life, punctuated by cranky guitars and McCaughey’s unmistakable vocal delivery and “Blow in My Bag,” built on the “idea of a Nancy Sinatra / Lee Hazlewood duet, but of course between me and Debbi,” says McCaughey.

Throughout the 12-song collection, McCaughey’s breadth of musical knowledge and appreciation is on full display from the addictive power pop of “Words & Birds” to the gnarly garage rock of “The Garden of Arden,” the Neil Young-influenced Americana of “Bison Queen,” and the bite-sized psychedelia of “Sharktooth.” “The songs feel immediate, relatively unadorned, and somewhat more positive in an indescribable way,” says McCaughey. “The words could be termed stream-of-consciousness, which is nothing new from this sector, but there seems to be a ray of light fighting its way through the usual twisted tales.”

In June, The Minus 5 will embark on a seven-date West Coast tour with stops in Pioneertown, San Diego, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, Seattle, and Vancouver and in September will open for the Baseball Project on a 15-date East Coast run. A complete list of dates is below, and tickets are now available here.

Over a four-decade career, indie rock cult hero Scott McCaughey has been a member of many bands, including R.E.M., Young Fresh Fellows, Baseball Project, Filthy Friends, and Robyn Hitchcock & The Venus 3, to name a few. Still, The Minus 5 has remained one of the most enduring projects of his storied résumé. Suffering a near-fatal stroke in 2017, it was under the The Minus 5 name that McCaughey put out the recordings of Stroke Manor, featuring the original songs that detail his recovery through music therapy.

Formed in 1993 by Scott McCaughey, The Minus 5 is known for its collaborative ethos and ever-changing lineup, which has included some of the most celebrated names in music, from Jeff Tweedy and Wilco to The Decemberists, Ben Gibbard of Death Cab for Cutie, Kelly Hogan, M. Ward, Chuck Prophet, Michael McCready of Pearl Jam, Alejandro Escovedo, and many more. The band embodies the communal spirit that has been a hallmark of the band since its inception.

Nell Mescal Releases Emotional Demo “Thin” and Teases New Music

0

Nell Mescal unveils her deeply personal demo, ‘Thin‘ today. After teasing the track for months with snippets on socials and intimate acoustic sets across the UK, it’s become a firm favourite. With overwhelming reactions from fans, Nell decided to gift them the track early, as she works on new material.

‘Thin’ confronts the dark, damaging thoughts about body image and self-worth. Nell explains, “Thin is about body image and equating what you look like to what your worth is when it comes to love. It was a really difficult song to write and to confront, and comes from all my darkest and most untrue thoughts about myself.” She continues, “The ultimate message of the song and what I hope people get from listening to it is that these thoughts aren’t true, but that doesn’t make the emotions any less real and that you are enough as you are.”

This marks Nell’s first release since her debut EP Can I Miss It For A Minute?, a collection exploring themes of growing up, moving on, and the tug-of-war between past pain and present emotions. Her cathartic singles, Killing Time and Warm Body set the stage for the EP, which sold out in less than an hour on exclusive vinyl and CD. You can stream it digitally here.

Following sold-out debut headline shows in New York last month, a support slot with Dermot Kennedy at Misneach Festival in Boston, and a string of intimate acoustic performances, Nell is gearing up for a busy summer. She’s been added to a number of festivals and will support Robbie Williams at Newcastle’s Come Together Festival on June 4th. Plus, a UK tour is in the works for later this year. Tickets for all on-sale dates are available here.

“I’m beyond excited for what’s to come,” says Nell“I have lots of new music that I’m currently working on, which will be out soon. I’ll be playing festivals this summer and working on a run of headline shows for you all later in the year ❤️”

Nell’s relentless live presence has made her a force on the circuit. She’s graced festivals like Latitude, All Points East, and Electric Picnic, while also supporting major acts such as HAIM, Florence & The Machine, Dermot Kennedy, and The Last Dinner Party. Her January 2024 UK tour sold out in a flash, where Nell and her band performed EP tracks for the first time.

With praise from the likes of i-D, The New York Times, Vogue, NMERadio 1 and a nomination at the Rolling Stone UK Awards, Nell is making waves with every new release. Catch Nell and her band at festivals across the summer and keep your ears peeled for new music in the coming months.

HAIM Announce New Album ‘I Quit’ Out June 20, Drop Single “Down To Be Wrong”

0

Rock trio HAIM have announced a June 20th official release date for I quit, their highly anticipated fourth studio album on Columbia Records. The siblings have been teasing the announcement online and confirmed the release on stage earlier this week at a set of surprise shows in Los Angeles at The Bellwether.

The 15-track album was produced by Rostam Batmanglij and Danielle Haim and radiates the raw energy of seasoned performers whose deep reverence for classic rock shapes songs that are built for live performance. The album cover art was shot by longtime creative collaborator and friend Paul Thomas Anderson.

HAIM have also released new single “Down to be wrong,” a confident ode to self-preservation and prioritizing yourself. “Don’t need you to understand, don’t know if you can,” is the song’s final message, defiantly ending with “Red Lights are up ahead, but I keep walking.” The video for “Down to be wrong” was directed by Bradley and Pablo (Harry Styles, Charli XCX, Rosalia) and features heartthrob Logan Lerman. “Down to be wrong” video will be released tomorrow at 8am PST.

“Down to be wrong” follows previously released album tracks “Relationships” and “Everybody’s trying to figure me out,” which were both met with critical praise. Pitchfork noted “what’s that sound? Is it the first song of the summer?” while Vulture raved, “Haim is back… they’re not taking anything too seriously except for the quality of what they put out into the world,” and Stereogum hailed it as, “a return to the sleek genre-hybrid sounds of classic Haim.” Upon the release of “Everybody’s trying to figure me out,” V Magazine aptly recognized its heavier guitar influence, noting, “The rock-inspired track acts as a contrast to the tongue-in-cheek confidence displayed on ‘Relationships,’ showcasing a contemplative exploration about feeling misunderstood,” and Rolling Stone proclaimed, “it’s sure to invoke the golden-hued liberation of summer.” HAIM will play their first festival set of 2025 on Sunday April 27th at New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, as well as Primavera Sound Festival in Barcelona on June 6 and Portugal on June 14.

I quit is the first new album since the band’s 2020 album Women In Music, Pt. III, which earned them a Brit Award for International Group. Women In Music, Pt. III received two GRAMMY Award nominations, including the prestigious “Album of the Year” recognition. With this nomination, HAIM became the first all-female rock group to be included in the GRAMMY’s top category. Women In Music, Pt. III debuted #1 on the U.S. Album Sales chart, as well as the Rock and Alternative charts and entered at #1 on the UK Album chart.

Tracy Bonham Reclaims Her Voice on New Single “Jumping Bean” Ahead of ‘Sky Too Wide’ Album Release

0

“‘JUMPING BEAN’ is about the inner strength and belief in oneself needed so that we can stand up to anyone who tries to limit, diminish or categorize us,” says indie rock maven TRACY BONHAM about her new single. “This is written from a woman’s perspective but can be applied to anyone who feels marginalized.” Taken from her upcoming album SKY TOO WIDE which will be self-released on June 6, 2025 via A Woody Hollow, “Jumping Bean” is a reimagining of a guitar track that she released in 2000 off of her album Down Here.

This struggle against patriarchal thinking is nothing new, of course, but for Tracy, she felt it firsthand in the music business. “This was a growing awareness I had, as my world expanded from being a young woman treated as a subordinate and dealing with sexist bosses, to sitting in boardrooms and business dinners with ‘powerful’ men in the music business who thought nothing of telling me what to wear, how to pose, and how to step out of the way,” she describes. While it may have the same lyrics, it is now coming from a place of liberation rather than a feeling of helplessness… Releasing the spunky energy from the original, the 2025 version of the song trades in the vigorous abandon for a much more confident and deliberate control, displaying a healthy dose of female agency and power.

The accompanying video was filmed with the Eugene Ballet, featuring choreography from the acclaimed choreographer Suzaane Haag. “This live performance exemplifies what it is to dissent as a female artist working in a traditionally misogynist art form; classical ballet,” Tracy says. “For a big part of it, Suzaane used literal choreography from some of the oldest, most classic ballets (La Bayadère, Paquita, Swan Lake, and Giselle).

Tracy’s embrace of ballet reflects the artistic path she is currently blazing. While primarily known for her initial indie rock entrance into the mainstream, she has evolved her music by embracing the classical structure she was trained in, as well as adding in elements of jazz rhythms. Part of this transformation is due to her current band, Rene Hart on bass and Alvester Garnett on drums, both of whom are experienced and respected jazz musicians. “I had been playing ‘Jumping Bean’ solo – just guitar and vocals – with a PJ Harvey-esque bluesy vibe for many years,” she explains. “When my rhythm section joined me, they added a rhythmic element that transformed the choruses into a rock-blues anthem that is incredibly unique and powerful.”

Coupling the release of Sky Too Wide with a record release show at New York City’s Joe’s Pub on June 10th, Tracy will be joined by a good friend who just happens to be comedian, actor and musician, Fred Armisen. “Fred and I met 23 years ago when U2 came over the Manhattan Bridge on the bed of a flatbed truck to ultimately play on a stage set up in Fulton Park in DUMBO. Fred came up to me and the first thing he said was ‘you’re great,’” Tracy recounts. “It was 2002 so I had to wait until I got home to look him up on the computer… Since then Fred has always been gracious and kind and he helped me make a video for a crowdfunding campaign back in 2017… All he needed was the main idea and he took it from there. It was impossible not to laugh when filming with Fred.“

Tracy’s breakthrough debut album The Burdens of Being Upright (1996, Island Records) spawned the massive #1 alternative chart-topping single “Mother Mother.” A classically trained violinist and pianist, and twice GRAMMY™ nominated, Tracy spent the following 27 years evolving as an artist through her albums and live performances. That debut album catapulted Tracy into the spotlight with MTV fame, major radio play, and more, continuing relevancy until even recently, when “Mother Mother” was featured in Showtime’s Yellow Jackets (Season 1 Episode 2). Tracy continues to meld her 90’s songs with her outlook as a self-actualized person and artist today, and her wide breadth of work continues to resonate.
