With a mix of raw storytelling, rich instrumentation, and a sound that bridges folk-rock and indie grit, Niagara, ON’s Nick Braun unveils his new EP, Johnny, led by the standout title track. The five-song collection explores ambition, isolation, and the search for meaning through the lens of a fictional character navigating the ups and downs of life as an artist.

At the heart of it all is “Johnny,” a song that embodies the tension between nostalgia and the pursuit of something greater. The character reflects on where his friends have gone, “blames it all on time,” and questions whether the life he’s built is truly what he wanted. Over layered acoustic guitars and a driving rhythm section, Braun’s vocals carry both longing and defiance, channeling influences like Wilco, Jason Isbell, and Neil Young as the track builds into an anthemic chorus.

“This record was the first time I wrote music from a storytelling perspective,” Braun explains. “Writing about personal experience, especially difficult experiences, can weigh heavy on the mind. It can be easier—and actually fun—to share those ideas through the lens of a fictional character, and that’s where Johnny came along.”

Though Johnny is fictional, his story is deeply personal for Braun. Nearly ten years ago, Braun experienced a period of psychosis—an intense chapter of his life that coincided with the beginning of his journey into songwriting and making his own recordings. “I’ve played music since well before that incident,” he notes, “but my creative nature and overactive imagination came with a dark side, and making music has been the best way to grapple with it. Music brings complexity into moments of clarity and enjoyment. This EP was an effort to capture that clarity and enjoyment, share some personal experiences and unique ideas, and continue to come into my own as a music producer.”

Braun, a Niagara-based multi-instrumentalist and producer, crafted Johnny entirely on his own, recording each instrument from his home studio. Though rooted in folk rock, the production is layered with rocking guitar riffs, shimmering synths, and punchy drums—a sound that sits comfortably alongside Dawes, Kurt Vile, and My Morning Jacket.

Beyond “Johnny,” the EP is a journey through self-discovery and reinvention. “The Wrestler” examines internal battles, likening them to a fighter in the ring—“wrestle with yourself like a heavyweight champion with nothing to lose.” Meanwhile, “September Song” slows things down with a meditative, atmospheric tone, urging listeners to embrace change: “Be the voice inside me too, be the changing seasons.”

The EP closes with “Like a River,” a track that echoes the fluidity of life and love. Braun’s evocative lyrics—“My heart is like a river, my stomach is a well, my mind is like a tree that in the river fell”—deliver a profound sense of movement and transformation, tying together the album’s themes of growth and self-exploration.

To celebrate the release of Johnny, Braun will perform two live shows in the Niagara region. On April 11 at Niagara Artists Centre (St. Catharines, ON), he’ll perform stripped-back versions of his songs as a duo with Jordan Alexander on bass, sharing the stage with Arih SK, The Crooked Crow, and Substitute. He’ll follow that up with a full-band show on May 10 at Camp Cataract (Niagara Falls), supporting The Howling Gales.

Indie rock trio The Alter Kakers have released “My Darling One”, a song that began as a private letter and became an anthem for anyone who has ever said goodbye to a beloved pet.

Frontman Steve Bronstein wrote the song after the sudden passing of his rescue dog, Tori, in August 2023. Searching for ways to process his grief, he was encouraged to write a letter. Instead, the words found their way into a melody—a way to keep her memory alive.

Are you smiling at everyone?
It’s so like you, my darling one.”

“Writing this song helped me channel my grief into something creative,” Bronstein shares. “We play it at every rehearsal, and it keeps her with me. Losing a pet is losing a part of your heart, and you’re not crazy for feeling that deeply.”

Recorded in January 2025 with acclaimed producer Bill Bell (Tom Cochrane, Jason Mraz, Alex Lifeson, Andy Kim), the song moves between a soft, country-tinged intro and outro—where Bronstein searches for Tori’s presence and imagines the day they’ll reunite—and a tender middle section capturing the moment of goodbye.

It’s a song that sounds like it could have been found on an unreleased Johnny Cash record—and that’s no accident. “Johnny Cash has been good to me,” Schofield says. “I love the man in black. George Jones is almost like the dad I never had. Hank Williams is the lost uncle I never knew.”

On Superheaven, the band returns with a towering collection that sees them pushing at their boundaries with a sense of pensive gloom, and features the singles “Long Gone,” “Numb To What Is Real,” “Cruel Times,” and “Star At The Void.” VICE wrote, “Superheaven are back and, dare we say, better than ever,” and Revolver attested, “the cult post-hardcore heavies are back in fine f***ing form.” Stereogum praised their “heavy, churning guitar-storm about feeling numb and remote,” while Consequence affirmed, “Superheaven are modern torchbearers of the heavy post-grunge guitar sound, harnessing daisy-chained pedals and cranked amplifiers into walls of sonic comfort.”

This spring, Superheaven will head out on a 2025 North American headline tour in support of their long-awaited new self-titled album. The upcoming dates will feature special guests Glare and SPY, and will kick off on April 27th at Delmar Hall in St. Louis, MO. The trek includes stops in Los Angeles, Berkley, Denver, Austin, Chicago, Toronto, Philadelphia and concludes with a performance at New York’s Brooklyn Steel on May 20th [tour itinerary / admat below]. Furthermore, Superheaven also have several U.S. and international festival appearances slated for 2025 including: LDB Fest in Louisville, KY (April 26th), Outbreak Fest in London, United Kingdom (June 13th), Outbreak Fest in Manchester, United Kingdom (June 14-15th), Louder Than Life in Louisville, KY (September 18-21st) and more.

Fontaines D.C. Release ‘ROMANCE’ Deluxe Edition As North American Tour Begins

In line with their biggest North American tour to date kicking off this week in Seattle, Dublin quintet Fontaines D.C. have released a deluxe edition of their acclaimed fourth album ROMANCE. Available on all digital services via XL Recordings, ROMANCE (Deluxe Edition) adds three songs to the original 11 track album.

In addition to the recent “It’s Amazing To Be Young” and its stunning, Luna Carmoon-directed music video, the deluxe album also features the brand new, James Ford-produced song “Before You I Just Forget”.

Completing the trio is a live, stripped-back version of “Starburster” that sees the band melding their biggest song to date with David Lynch’s “In Heaven (Lady In The Radiator Song)”, which originally featured on the soundtrack of Lynch’s 1977’s Eraserhead film.

Speaking on the new music, Conor Curley said “‘Before You I Just Forget’ is a song that started with a vision of this really blown out sound, something that heaved and shifted with new details, becoming apparent every time you would listen. Like never being able to step in the same river twice, the song morphs and changes, finishing with an incredible string part by Grian.”

The release precedes a huge summer of live activity for Fontaines D.C. In addition to the 24 date North American tour-their first headline shows in the States since 2022-which culminates in three sold out shows at New York’s Hammerstein Ballroom on May 16-18, the band will perform to 100,000 people across four sold out UK outdoor headline shows this summer. These include a 45,000-capacity event at London’s Finsbury Park on July 5 alongside events in Manchester, Cardiff and Newcastle. These shows will crown sold-out headline dates around the world, including Europe, Asia, Australia and North America alongside a run of high-profile festival appearances.
