David and Hannah Mirvish Present The 2025/26 Off-Mirvish Theatre Subscription Season

0

David and Hannah Mirvish are delighted to announce the 2025/26 Off-Mirvish Season, comprised of five productions – three plays and two musicals. Four of the shows are Canadian premieres and one is a North American premiere.

“It’s hard to believe we’re celebrating our 15th Off-Mirvish season,” said David Mirvish. “When we began this series in 2011, it was to showcase shows that were quirkier and perhaps a little more challenging. And we hoped to be able to partner with local companies and find bigger audiences for work that began life in more intimate spaces.”

Hannah Mirvish added: “Ultimately, it was and continues to be about bringing together artists and audiences for unique, entertaining and thought-provoking theatre.”

“Off-Mirvish casts a wide net by design, but we often find the shows share themes by coincidence,” continues David. “In 2025/26, the shows explore the commonality of our human experience through the connections, and the choices, we make.

“In Bright Star, featuring the Tony Award-nominated score by Steve Martin and Edie Brickell – and co-produced in Toronto with the Actor-Musician focused company Garner Theatre Productions – we explore the chance encounter of a literary editor and an aspiring young writer returning home from fighting in WWII, a connection that will change both their lives.

“Ava sees Academy Award, Golden Globe and Emmy Award-nominated actor Elizabeth McGovern star as Hollywood’s original femme fatale, Ava Gardner, as she looks back on a life lived large and wonders how much of it she wants to make public.

“The Woman in Black delighted and haunted audiences in London’s West End for 33 years and tells the tale of a lawyer looking to exorcise the fear that grips his soul. That ground-breaking production is coming to Off-Mirvish.

“In Tony® Award-winning Best Musical Kimberly Akimbo – which has its Canadian Premiere in a co-production with Montreal’s Segal Centre for Performing Arts and stars the luminous Louise Pitre – we meet a young girl with a rare genetic condition determined to find happiness against all odds and embark on a great adventure.

“And, lastly, Cyrano – a new adaptation of Edmond Rostand’s classic play that was a 5-star hit in Edinburgh and London and is making its North American premiere with us – is a love letter to hope; to language and desire; to the irrepressible magic of theatre.”

Hannah Mirvish explains: “That’s the magic created when artists and audiences come together.  The excitement when the lights go down and a hush falls on the audience. That awe when the actors step on stage. Those goosebumps when a song reaches into your soul, or a monologue takes your breath away. That rush as you’re leaving the theatre, dying to discuss everything you just saw. The power of theatre cannot be understated, nor contained. So, this Off-Mirvish Season, let’s let it out, because theatre is life.”

Subscriptions to the Off-Mirvish Season are $261 to $336 (up to 48% off regular prices) and are now on sale at mirvish.com and 1-800-461-3333.

All performances will be at the CAA Theatre, 651 Yonge St. (south of Bloor – and not at Yonge and Dundas).

It is as intimate a live album as Neil Young has ever recorded, created at a time when the world was coming out of hibernation from the Covid pandemic. Recorded in several cities, it is an album for the ages as the singer-songwriter finds new emotional power in 11 of his songs.

Coastal: The Soundtrack will be available in all formats including, black vinyl, CD, digital and Dolby Atmos. A limited edition clear vinyl pressing with exclusive poster will be available via The Greedy Hand Store at Neil Young Archives (NYA) and Indie retailers only. Order or stream here.

The Coastal film was shot and directed by acclaimed filmmaker and Young’s wife, Daryl Hannah and will be distributed worldwide by Trafalgar Releasing. The film is a personal, behind-the-scenes documentary on Neil Young as he cruises the coast on his 2023 solo US tour, giving an up-close and intimate view into the life of one of history’s most iconic songwriters and musicians. Capturing Young as he navigates a return to the stage post-Covid, Hannah allows the audience to be an observing participant in a rare, candid peek behind the curtain of this unguarded iconoclast. It’s a celebration of living that has been a long time coming, and illuminates up close and personal who Neil Young is, where he came from, and in many ways, where he was going: Coastal.

Russ Ballard Shares New Single “I Know There’s Something Going On” From Double Album ‘Songs From The Warehouse / The Hits Rewired’

0

Renowned rock singer Russ Ballard is pleased to share his new single and accompanying video “I Know There’s Something Going On,” taken from his upcoming double album ‘Songs From The Warehouse / The Hits Rewired,’ out on April 25th, 2025 via Frontiers Music Srl.

This release is a real treat for all rock fans: the first CD contains new songs, which show once again that the inspiration never left RUSS, while the second CD includes brand new recordings of famous hits either penned or performed by him during the years.

About the new single, Russ Ballard says: “That was a quick one. I wrote it when the first digital reverbs came out. I played around with these new sounds, took my holey guitar and that’s it. It took me an hour to write it from start to finish. Phil Collins turned it into a massive song then with his drum sound. Years later, Frida said she wished I did more songs for her. How lovely from her.”

Ballard also expresses his excitement for the album: “It’s a buzz releasing a new album. What started as my ‘Lockdown-tapes’ during the pandemic became an album! During lockdown, my studio was a life saver for me, and I found new ways of writing and recording. The result gives the listeners a good insight into this time – have a listen!”

Russ Ballard is simply one of the most renowned and gifted songwriters in pop and rock music. His music career started when he was only 14 years old and he wrote a tune, which was recorded by The Shadows, appearing on their album ‘The Sound Of The Shadows’ in 1964.

During the 70’s and 80’s, his songs ruled the airwaves and the list of hits is pretty much endless. From “Since You Been Gone” (Rainbow), “God Gave Rock’n’Roll To You” (Argent and Kiss), “So You Win Again” (Hot Chocolate), “New York Groove” (Hello and Ace Frehley), “You Can Do Magic” (America), “Winning” (Santana) or “I Don’t Believe In Miracles” (Colin Blunstone) – just to name a few – everyone who needed a great song knew that with Russ Ballard they could not go wrong.

Numerous records/artists were also produced by him, like Roger Daltrey, America, Elkie Brooks, Skindred or Sada Vidoo. In 1974, he started a solo career (after his stint with the band Argent in early 70’s), which had its highest momentum with the ‘S/t’ album in 1984 (which included the hit single “Voices”) and the follow up “The Fire Still Burns”.

Since then, Ballard has released 10 studio albums and is still writing and producing hits. Three songs from his 1984 and 1985 albums were featured in the TV show “Miami Vice” and were extensively played on dance floors around Europe.

Tunde Adebimpe Shares “Somebody New” Video Ahead of Debut Solo Album ‘Thee Black Boltz’ Out April 18

Acclaimed TV on the Radio frontman and multi-hyphenate talent Tunde Adebimpe has released a new video for “Somebody New,” from his highly anticipated debut solo album, Thee Black Boltz. The album is set to be released this Friday, April 18th via Sub Pop Records.

The album’s fourth pre-release, “Somebody New”, is a synth-heavy, dance floor ready track and the video, directed by Adebimpe, is a trippy time capsule of neon, glitter and what can only be described as no-holds-barred, stark raving puppet glam.

Of the video Tunde says, “I’m positive I fell asleep on a couch with the TV on sometime in 1982 and fever dreamt this exact thing.” This announcement comes on the heels of the release of “God Knows”, a track about the complexities of a bittersweet breakup; the vivid and introspective “Drop” from earlier this year; and last year’s lead single “Magnetic”.

Thee Black Boltz is produced by Tunde Adebimpe & Wilder Zoby, and executive produced by Zoby, with additional production and contributions from Jaleel Bunton & Jahphet Landis (of TV on the Radio), and more. Showcasing visionary soundscapes, the album is a nod to Adebimpe’s propensity to write and sing about the human condition – in all its forms, under all its stressors, both big and small.

First Official Biography of Richard Manuel Set for June Release, Featuring New Stories from Eric Clapton, Van Morrison, and More

For the first time — in an official biography endorsed by his family — the Band’s legendary Richard Manuel’s compositions and performances are analyzed with expert commentary while shining a light on his contributions to all of his bands—and on the undeniable impact he had on rock music in Richard Manuel: His Life and Music, from the Hawks and Bob Dylan to The Band Hardcover by Stephen T. Lewis.
A strong but quiet presence in the group, who did very few interviews during his own life, Manuel’s story is brought to the forefront by those who knew him best – many speaking on the record for the first time – including family members, lifelong friends and close musical collaborators (Eric Clapton and Van Morrison among them). Through their words and Lewis’ meticulous research, well-worn second-hand narratives are eschewed for a dynamic portrait of an inspired spirit among his generation’s greatest and most underrated musical innovators.

Within the pages of this first official Richard Manuel biography are stories from his earliest days as a teenage blues obsessive, leading The Revols (his first band) to ascendant heights in Canada – into the crucial artistic viewpoint (and revered singing voice) he brought to The Hawks and The Band; as well as the pivotal roles he played in moments that defined an era – like Bob Dylan “going electric,” Woodstock and of course The Last Waltz. Lewis also offers many never-heard insights into Manuel’s later years, including his unwavering passion for creating with those closest to him (and renewed songwriting output) as he battled addiction and personal demons in his final days.

Bruce Springsteen Previews His Never-Heard ‘Streets Of Philadelphia Sessions’ With ‘Blind Spot’

0

Bruce Springsteen’s “Streets of Philadelphia Sessions” will be released in full on “Tracks II: The Lost Albums” — a ten-song collection previously known to fans as his long-rumored “loops record.” Written on the heels of its Oscar-winning namesake, “Streets of Philadelphia Sessions” found Springsteen exploring an interest in the rhythms of mid-1990s contemporary music, and particularly West Coast hip-hop. Initially poring over CDs of drum samples at his home in Los Angeles, Springsteen began making his own loops with engineer Toby Scott — which formed a rhythmic base he’d build on with keyboards and synthesizers. Both a revelation and departure in his home recording, Springsteen is the primary instrumentalist throughout most of “Streets of Philadelphia Sessions” — with some assists from his 1992-1993 touring band as well as Patti Scialfa, Soozie Tyrell and Lisa Lowell.

At the thematic center of “Streets of Philadelphia Sessions” is “Blind Spot,” a song which explores doubt and betrayal in relationships. “That was just the theme that I locked in on at that moment,” Springsteen explains. “I don’t really know why. Patti and I, we were having a great time in California. But sometimes if you lock into one song you like, then you follow that thread. I had ‘Blind Spot,’ and I followed that thread through the rest of the record.”

Fully completed, mixed and slated for a spring 1995 release, “Streets of Philadelphia Sessions” was ultimately put aside — as Springsteen decided to reunite with The E Street Band for the first time in seven years. “I said, ‘Well, maybe it’s time to just do something with the band, or remind the fans of the band or that part of my work life,’” he remembers. “So that’s where we went. But I always really liked ‘Streets of Philadelphia Sessions’…during the Broadway show, I thought of putting it out [as a standalone release]. I always put them away, but I don’t throw them away.”

Pre-order “Tracks II: The Lost Albums” here, coming June 27 via Sony Music: https://brucespringsteen.lnk.to/TheLostAlbumsPR

With the announcement of “Tracks II: The Lost Albums” earlier this month, the collection’s upcoming release has been called “a treasure” (David Muir, ABC World News Tonight),  “astounding” (Rolling Stone) and “too good to be true” (New York Magazine). “Almost ever since he released ‘Tracks’ in 1998, fans have clamored for this,” noted Variety, while the New York Times added that even Springsteen’s biggest fans would be “surprised at the scale of ‘Tracks II.’” The full set was announced with the never-heard song “Rain In The River” from Springsteen’s lost album “Perfect World.” In addition to “Streets of Philadelphia Sessions” and “Perfect World,” “Tracks II” will also include Springsteen’s previously unreleased full-length albums “Faithless,” “Somewhere North of Nashville,” “Inyo,” Twilight Hours” and “LA Garage Sessions ’83.”
