Soft Cell Announce Remastered Reissue Of ‘Non-Stop Ecstatic Dancing’ With New Remixes From Erasure, The Hacker, And More

0

Synth pop pioneers Soft Cell will reissue their classic remix album ‘Non-Stop Ecstatic Dancing’ on the 20th June 2025 via Universal Music. The 1982 original, inspiring generations of clubbers, DJs and remixers the world over, is fully remastered and bolstered by the inclusion of extended versions of its two hit singles. Namely, the smouldering melodrama of ‘Torch’, which famously just missed becoming Soft Cell’s second Number One hit by being kept off the top spot by Adam Ant, plus the top three hit ‘What!’, a cover of Judy Street’s 1968 Northern Soul heartache anthem.  All is brought bang up to date with a second disc of remixes including Erasure, The Hacker, Jon Pleased Wimmin, Daniel Miller, The Grid and Hifi Sean, alongside highlights from 2007’s long-deleted ‘Heat – The Remixes’.

‘Non-Stop Ecstatic Dancing’ is available now to pre-order on double LP, double CD and digital here: https://SoftCell.lnk.to/NSED

Soft Cell, aka singer, frontman and LGBTQ icon Marc Almond and multi-instrumentalist and producer Dave Ball, made their name in the clubs of Leeds, London, New York and Berlin before pop stardom hit with their groundbreaking, subversive performance of ‘Tainted Love’ on Top of the Pops in 1981. A rework of key moments from the electronic duo’s seminal debut album ‘Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret’ alongside a couple of unreleased tracks, ‘Non-Stop Ecstatic Dancing’ is hailed as one of the very first remix albums, and reached number 6 in the UK album charts in June 1982. It was closely followed by The Human League – temporarily renamed as The League Unlimited Orchestra – releasing their own extended rework of 1981’s electro pop classic ‘Dare’ in ‘Love and Dancing’.

‘Non-Stop Ecstatic Dancing’ features six dancefloor-slaying tracks, including, in addition to the aforementioned singles, an extended version of ‘Memorabilia’ that transformed the original into a 3am proto-house banger. The reissued ‘Non-Stop Ecstatic Dancing’ channels the neon glamour and grit of Danceteria, Batcave, The Camden Palace and Studio 54 and still sounds fresh, menacing and ready to throw shapes in 2025.

Over to Dave Ball on the making of ‘Non-Stop Ecstatic Dancing’, “Non-Stop Ecstatic Dancing, recorded at Mediasound in a very cold and snowy New York in February 1982, was a bit like a party in the studio.  It was created to encapsulate the atmosphere and influences of all the clubs we went to, the music we danced to, and the drugs we took during our nights out in New York – the most obvious being cocaine and our most recent discovery at the time, ecstasy.  We stripped or dubbed out most of the vocals and added more horns, and extensively used the analogue Serge modular system (that also played the pulsating sound heard on ‘Torch’, recorded around the same time).  It generated fantastically dirty, random chaos and synthetic scratch sounds which just added to the intensity of the album. It ultimately captured the zeitgeist – and I think still sounds valid today.”

Since their reunion in 2018, Soft Cell have made a steady return to prominence and continue to shake things up in their ever provocative, uncompromising way. 2022’s new album ‘Happiness Not Included’ followed in the footsteps of the feted ‘Non-Stop Erotic Cabaret’ 40th anniversary boxset and tour, featuring a chart-topping collaboration with Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe of Pet Shop Boys in ‘Purple Zone’ as well as collaboration with experimental queer artist CHRISTEENE. Most recently, Soft Cell toured Australia for the first time ever and will be touring the States extensively in May and June with Simple Minds. Closer to home, Soft Cell headline Rewind festival at Henley-on-Thames on 16th August, their only UK show of 2025 (get tickets here). Around their extensive touring commitments, Marc and Dave are still finding time to continue work on their as-yet-untitled sixth studio album.

Ashley Monroe Announces New Album ‘Tennessee Lightning,’ Featuring Marty Stuart, Shelby Lynne, T Bone Burnett, and More

0

Ashley Monroe announced her sixth studio album Tennessee Lightning will be released August 8. Recorded in the wake of Monroe’s transformative bout with cancer, the 17-song collection documents her remarkable journey as a celebration of life, love and the healing power of music.

Along with the announcement, the 3x GRAMMY nominee shares her new single “The Touch” (feat. Marty Stuart), a smoldering love song complete with a dreamy guitar riff from Stuart on guitar and Shelby Lynne on bass. In the spirit of true collaboration, Tennessee Lightning also includes contributions from special guests T Bone Burnett, Brittney Spencer, Waylon Payne, Brendan Benson, Butch Walker, Karen Fairchild and Armand Hutton.

“‘The Touch’ is the first song I ever wrote with the incredible Marty Stuart,” says Monroe. “It was storming so loud that day, and we could feel the electricity just hanging in the air. He played that guitar lick, and my heart melted. I’ve always been a fan of timeless love songs. So honored to have Marty write this one with me and play on it! I’m also so proud to have Shelby Lynne on bass! What a band!”

Stuart added, “‘The Touch’ is a majestic song. When Ashley and I were recording the words and music onto our cell phones moments after we’d finished writing it, the Nashville sky filled with thunder. The windows in the room where the song came to life rattled like bones. We laughed and took that as a sign that God liked the song. Lightning in a bottle if you will. I didn’t think any performance of the song could get any better than our inspired working version. Ashley’s formal recording, however, takes the song up into the clouds and commands time to stand still. The harmonies are glorious. ‘The Touch’ is four minutes and fifty-one seconds of pure magic. The kind of song we long for.”

Co-produced by Monroe with GRAMMY-winning producer/engineer Gena Johnson (John Prine, Jason Isbell), Tennessee Lightning is a sprawling epic spanning from the innocence of childhood and the grief of loss to the thrill of romance and the joy of motherhood. Teaming up once again with Johnson, the pair weaved together strands of country, folk, blues, soul and dreamy bedroom pop. The result is a rich, multifaceted meditation on identity, purpose, and meaning from an artist who’s learned to see herself – and the world around her – in a whole new light following a life-altering diagnosis.

“When I got diagnosed with lymphoma and started my treatment, I stopped writing, I stopped hearing melodies, I stopped thinking about songs at all,” Monroe recalls. For six months, she focused almost exclusively on her recovery and her family as she underwent a grueling regimen of injections and transfusions.

“When I finally went into remission, I could feel the life and the music start flowing in my veins again,” she explains. “It was like a flood, just this rush of inspiration.” Along with that inspiration came a newfound clarity and gratitude, as well as a vision for this new album.

“I feel like I’ve emerged from these last few years with a pretty profound perspective shift. I’ve learned to be more in the moment, to appreciate what’s right in front of me and enjoy every second I get to spend doing what I love with the people I care about.” In the end, that’s what Tennessee Lightning is all about: transcendence in the face of struggle, community in the face of isolation, love in the face of fear.

“The Touch” follows the release of three album tracks including the ethereal “There You Are,” the revved-up “Hot Rod Pipe Dream” and the shimmering “Risen Road.” Monroe’s recent work has been lauded by American Songwriter, CMT, Stereogum and People Magazine, who interviewed her about this musical “fresh start.” Tennessee Lightning follows Monroe’s 2021 album Rosegold, which received widespread acclaim from the Nashville Scene, No Depression, Vulture, Paste Magazine, Garden & Gun, Stereogum and many more.

On July 25, Monroe will celebrate the 10-year anniversary of her GRAMMY-nominated 2015 album The Blade with a one-night-only show at Nashville’s The Basement East, where she will perform the record in its entirety.

Tennessee Lightning Tracklist:
1. I’m Gonna Run (feat. T Bone Burnett) (Ashley Monroe, Sally Barris)
2. Risen Road (Ashley Monroe, Brendan Benson, Waylon Payne)
3. Closer (Ashley Monroe, Ashley Ray, Ben West)

VAVO, Diplo, and Priscilla Block Unite for YEEDM Anthem, “Bullet,” Out Now

0

YEEDM innovator VAVO has teamed with Diplo and Priscilla Block for their latest genre-blurring release, “Bullet.” With lyrics by Zach Abend, Ella Langley, and Lauren LaRue, “Bullet” is a kiss-off banger dripping with Block’s sassy delivery. VAVO will hit Diplo’s Honky Tonk at Stagecoach 2025 Friday (7:00-8:00) following a set from Diplo himself.

“Words can’t really describe how proud and excited I am about this release. Diplo is literally one of the best music producers – period – and I’ve always dreamed about working on an original with him. He really is one of the pioneers of the country/dance music movement,” shared VAVO’s Jesse Fischer. “Priscilla was one of the first country artists to truly believe in YEEDM and had us remix multiple songs for her back in 2023. Seriously, someone pinch me because this has to be a dream!”

“I couldn’t be more excited for this song. The second I heard it, I was obsessed!,” added Block. “VAVO remixed a few of my songs in the past, so it’s awesome to finally do an original together and having Diplo on it takes the song to a whole new level. I’ve been such a fan of his for a while and it’s an honor to do something together. ‘Bullet’ feels like the soundtrack to summer 2025!”

The Swell Season Reunites With First Album In 16 Years, ‘Forward’ Out June 13

0

The Swell Season (the acclaimed duo of Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova) today announced their first new album in 16 years, Forward, will be released on June 13, 2025.

An eight song collection that manages to capture both the familiar heartrending, joyous emotions and moments of beauty listeners have come to love from The Swell Season-as well as new slice-of-life, where-are-we-now chapters still being determined and understood-the album was produced by Sturla Mio Thorisson and recorded at his and Irglova’s Masterkey Studios in Iceland, alongside original Swell Season musicians Marja Gaynor and Bertrand Galen (strings) and Joseph Doyle (bass), and newcomer Piero Perelli (drums and percussion).

The duo also shared the impassioned, soaring lead single “Stuck In Reverse” with a video produced by James Del and Anthony Mulcahy, and filmed during a surprise show last month at New York bar Scratcher.

“In any situation of letting go, moving on is clearly the right and natural thing to do,” explains Hansard of the song. “This song speaks to that part of us that can’t quite get there. The moment just before complete acceptance.” ”

Stuck In Reverse” follows last month’s single and additional album track “People We Used To Be” (with a video directed by Radim Vanous and produced by Little Greta in collaboration with The Swell Season), which saw praise and support from The New York Times (‘Playlist’), Rolling Stone (‘Songs You Need To Know’), SPIN, Consequence, The Needle Drop, Brooklyn Vegan, and more.

Next month, The Swell Season will embark on a lengthy tour of Europe, the UK, Ireland, and North America in support of the album. The run includes a July 26th show at Brooklyn, NY’s Kings Theatre and a September 19th show at Los Angeles, CA’s The Greek. A full itinerary is below and tickets are on sale now.

When 16 years have passed since the release of their beloved duo’s previous album, 2009’s Strict Joy, it might be expected that Hansard and Irglova would title a new collection of The Swell Season songs as something commemorative or reflective instead of the succinct Forward. But, as anyone who has followed their career will tell you, The Swell Season doesn’t exactly do things the typical way. First formed by Hansard-then best known as the frontman of Irish rock band The Frames-and Czech pianist and singer Irglova in 2005, The Swell Season released a self-titled LP in 2006 before going on to star in and perform their songs in the film Once. Much-loved and critically praised, the movie catapulted them into the spotlight, and earned the duo the 2007 “Best Original Song” Academy Award for “Falling Slowly” before being adapted into a Tony-winning Broadway smash. Yet they have never spent much time looking back. So when the longtime friends decided amid their respective solo careers to officially reconvene for a handful of Swell Season shows in 2022, it led to not only a larger run of dates in 2023 but a recording session as well. A single, “The Answer Is Yes,” encouraged the pair to converge again in Irglova’s Iceland studio to write a new album in 2024, and from there, well, it seemed there was only one direction for The Swell Season to go.

“It felt right to title the record ‘Forward’ because it’s a reunion of sorts, but we’re not going backwards,” Irglova says. “Both of us have grown and changed; we’re in different places and getting to know each other again as the new people we’ve become.”

“After our whirlwind that led up to the Oscars and after, we were so busy and with that came a pressure that neither of us particularly wanted, and ultimately we kind of drifted in the middle of all of that hard work and celebration,” Hansard says. “We remained good friends, helping on each other’s records, keeping up with each other’s families. While touring my last record, I realized I just missed her. I remember calling Marketa and saying, ‘Do you feel like doing some gigs?’ She said, ‘Yeah, that sounds great,’ and the shows went really well. Once we were hanging out again, new songs started coming through, and we started trying new ideas and playing the songs onstage. From there the idea was to do a little recording and not put any pressure on it, just see what happens, and suddenly we found ourselves making a record. And we were both totally into it, and so here we are, a new chapter of our lives.”

The pair started working through song ideas they had written independently, choosing pieces that could benefit from the other’s touches, while some were composed entirely on the spot, seizing on the inspiration of their shared space. The synergy of their dynamic returned instantly-like turning on a tap-with Irglova seated at the piano and Hansard on his guitar; Hansard, who doesn’t typically set out to write intentionally for any specific project, found that Irglova’s ability to “call (him) out, artistically” and keep things on task really helped him to dial in on what the song required in the context of The Swell Season. “We serve as a mirror to each other, like playing catch; it’s so interactive, like sparks hitting off each other,” Irglova says. “It’s almost like alchemy; we pass this through the sieve of our experiences and who we are as people. I really respect Glen as an artist and a writer and I love writing and performing with him.”

With the intention of keeping things succinct, Hansard and Irglova walked away after three different sessions with eight songs decided on for Forward. There is space to move around in these songs, and enough air to let the listener settle in and appreciate the loveliness-and, above all, a measured, harmonious balance. Where Hansard’s tendency is to keep things rough and raw, stripped-down and grainy, Irglova’s songs move more into the lush, polished, cinematic world; the duo challenged themselves to find each song’s meeting-point while always staying true to each other’s intentions. Through it all, the group’s thesis statement remains as strong and unwavering as ever: never, ever give up; keep going, no matter how hard. In other words: Forward.

Eli Paperboy Reed Celebrates 20 Years With Reissue Of Debut Album And Soulful New Single “You’re Gonna Make Me Cry”

0

Eli Paperboy Reed has shared “You’re Gonna Make Me Cry,” a single from the 20th anniversary reissue of his debut album “Sings Walkin’ And Talkin’ And Other Smash Hits!” that will arrive on June 6th.

The set was originally recorded in a basement studio in Allston, Massachusetts, all live to analog tape in mono and pressed as a limited run of 300 CDs in 2005.

This self-released CD was mostly sold while Reed busked on the streets of Harvard Square in Cambridge, Mass in his early 20s. The first disc of the newly remastered double LP reissue will contain the original tracks from the album, plus four additional tracks recorded the same December day in 2004. The second disc contains a session recorded for WHRB radio at Harvard University in 2005. The single deluxe CD will contain all of the songs featured on the deluxe LP. This deluxe set presents Reed’s humble beginnings in Boston by way of Mississippi and Chicago, playing his own rough and ready interpretations of down-home blues, R&B and gospel. With this 20th anniversary release and the celebration of two decades of legendary live performances, Reed cements himself as an elder statesman of the genre. To further mark the milestone, Reed will be touring with a full band playing music from that first album in addition to his vast catalog.

The latest single from this set is “You’re Gonna Make Me Cry,” an impassioned, soulful blues take on the O.V. Wright original. American Blues Scene says of the track, “With a Stax-era touch, Mississippi soul, and church emotion, Reed’s voice moves from beautifully executed restraint to fervent release, delivering the song with reverence and reverberation – all filtered through an analog-drenched sound that evokes the very traditions that shaped his earliest days onstage.”

Seth MacFarlane Unveils ‘Lush Life: The Lost Sinatra Arrangements’ Featuring Never-Heard Sinatra Gems Out June 6

0

5x GRAMMY-nominated vocalist and Academy Award-nominated writer, actor, director, and producer, Seth MacFarlane reveals his brand new studio album, Lush Life: The Lost Sinatra Arrangements, will be released on June 6th via Verve Records / Republic Records.

Lush Life: The Lost Sinatra Arrangements is a one-of-a-kind album that includes twelve never-before-heard arrangements originally created for Frank Sinatra by his legendary collaborators Nelson Riddle, Billy May, and Don Costa. Written for some of Sinatra’s most classic and celebrated albums, these historic arrangements remained in the private collection of the Sinatra family, unheard – until now. MacFarlane introduces the highly anticipated project with the first single, “Lush Life”, out today.

In collaboration with the Sinatra family and estate, MacFarlane acquired the entire Sinatra music archive in 2018, and has brought these twelve remarkable arrangements to life with a 70-piece orchestra, featuring world-renowned musicians from Los Angeles and London, conducted by acclaimed British conductor John Wilson, and produced by MacFarlane’s longtime musical collaborator Joel McNeely. Every song on the album was recorded as a live performance with this ensemble at George Lucas’ famed Skywalker Sound Studios in Marin County, California.

The record’s first single, Billy Strayhorn’s “Lush Life”, features the original conceptual arrangement by Nelson Riddle from 1958. All together, the twelve tracks on Lush Life: The Lost Sinatra Arrangements are much more than a tribute to Frank Sinatra – they are a time capsule of rich musical history, opened for the first time, of undiscovered American treasures, in which MacFarlane’s warm, expressive vocals breathe new life into these carefully preserved arrangements.

Lush Life: The Lost Sinatra Arrangements is MacFarlane’s ninth studio album. His critically acclaimed albums In Full Swing [2018], No One Ever Tells You [2016], and Music Is Better Than Words [2012] all received GRAMMY Award nominations for “Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album”. Next year, he’ll bring Lush Life: The Lost Sinatra Arrangements to the stage with a live performance at Los Angeles’ Walt Disney Concert Hall on February 17th, 2026, on sale now. Throughout his illustrious career across music, television, film, and comedy, MacFarlane is recognized for his passion and dedication to preserving orchestral music in modern entertainment and bringing classic sounds to modern audiences.

The Art and Science of Decorative Lead Glass: A Comprehensive Guide

0

By Mitch Rice

Decorative lead glass, often referred to as leadlight or leaded glass, is a timeless element in architectural and interior design. Its intricate patterns and luminous qualities have adorned buildings for centuries, offering both aesthetic appeal and functional benefits. This guide delves into the world of decorative lead glass, exploring its history, manufacturing processes, applications, and the importance of choosing the right suppliers, especially for residents and businesses in Woodbridge.

Understanding Decorative Lead Glass

What Is Decorative Lead Glass?

Decorative lead glass is a type of glasswork where small pieces of glass are joined using lead cames to create intricate designs. This technique, known as came glasswork, has been used for centuries to produce windows and panels that are both functional and artistic. The lead cames provide structural support, allowing for the creation of complex patterns and the incorporation of various glass types, including coloured, textured, and bevelled glass. The result is a piece that not only serves as a window or partition but also as a work of art that plays with light and colour.

Historical Significance

The use of lead in glassmaking dates back to ancient times, with early examples found in Mesopotamia and China. In medieval Europe, leaded glass became prominent in church windows, depicting biblical scenes and saints. The technique evolved over the centuries, with the Gothic Revival of the 19th century bringing a resurgence in popularity for domestic applications. Today, decorative lead glass continues to be valued for its historical charm and artistic versatility.

Applications of Decorative Lead Glass

Residential Settings

In homes, decorative lead glass is often used in front doors, sidelights, transoms, and cabinet doors. It adds character and elegance, allowing natural light to filter through while maintaining privacy. Designs can range from traditional motifs to contemporary patterns, tailored to complement the architectural style of the residence.

Commercial and Public Buildings

Commercial establishments and public buildings utilize decorative lead glass to create inviting entrances, highlight brand identity, or pay homage to historical aesthetics. Restaurants, hotels, and offices may incorporate leaded glass in partitions, skylights, or decorative panels to enhance ambiance and convey a sense of sophistication.

Religious Institutions

Churches and other religious institutions have a long-standing tradition of using decorative lead glass in windows and other architectural elements. These installations often feature symbolic imagery and serve both spiritual and educational purposes, enriching the worship experience through visual storytelling.

Manufacturing Process

Design and Planning

The creation of decorative lead glass begins with a detailed design, often drawn to scale. This blueprint outlines the pattern, colour scheme, and types of glass to be used. Precision at this stage is crucial, as it dictates the accuracy and integrity of the final piece.

Glass Selection and Cutting

Various types of glass are chosen based on the desired effect—transparent, opaque, textured, or coloured. Each piece is meticulously cut to fit the design, requiring skill and precision to ensure seamless assembly.

Leading and Soldering

The cut glass pieces are fitted into lead cames, which are H-shaped strips of lead that hold the glass together. The joints where the cames meet are soldered to secure the structure. This framework provides both stability and flexibility, allowing the panel to withstand environmental stresses.

Cementing and Finishing

To waterproof and strengthen the panel, a special cement is applied between the glass and the cames. The panel is then cleaned, and any additional decorative elements, such as painting or etching, are added. The finished piece is ready for installation, bringing beauty and function to its designated space.

5 Things You Didn’t Know About Lulu Roman

Lulu Roman lit up America’s living rooms every week on Hee Haw — with that unmistakable laugh, quick wit, and larger-than-life presence. But behind the laughs was a life filled with hurdles, heart, and hope. She passed away today at the age of 78, and while many knew her as the beloved comedian and gospel singer, here are five lesser-known truths about the woman who beat the odds, again and again.

1. She Got Her Start in Jack Ruby’s Nightclubs
Long before Hee Haw, Lulu was billed as “the world’s biggest go-go dancer” in Dallas nightclubs run by Jack Ruby — yes, that Jack Ruby. She’d perform comedy and songs in between the club sets. It was outrageous, surreal, and just the beginning of a career that would soon veer onto national television.

2. She Was Handpicked by Buck Owens for Hee Haw
When producers were casting the original Hee Haw pilot in 1969, Buck Owens told them, “I got your girl. She’s in Dallas!” It was his endorsement that got Lulu the audition — and eventually, her iconic role. He saw something in her that no casting director ever could: pure, unfiltered charm.

3. She Left the Show After a Drug Arrest — Then Came Back Singing
In 1971, Lulu was arrested for drug possession and sentenced to four years in prison. During that time, she found Christianity and a new purpose. Incredibly, she was invited back to Hee Haw — this time with a microphone not for jokes, but for gospel songs that would lead her into an entirely new career.

4. She Recorded Duets with Country Royalty
Lulu’s gospel and standards albums included collaborations with legends like Dolly Parton, George Jones, and T. Graham Brown. She even earned a Dove Award in 1985 for her album You Were Loving Me, proof that her voice could move just as much as her humor once did.

5. Her Autobiography Pulled No Punches
In 2019, she released This is My Story; This is My Song, a raw, honest look at a life filled with both setbacks and second chances. She spoke openly about addiction, faith, fame, and the power of laughter. For many fans, it was the first time they saw the whole woman behind the jokes — and they loved her even more for it.

She was a Hee Haw honey, a gospel powerhouse, a survivor, and a storyteller. Today, we say goodbye to Lulu Roman — but her joy, grit, and grace will echo for generations.
