The SteelDrivers Announce New Album ‘Outrun’ and 20th Anniversary Tour, Drop Haunting Single “The River Knows”

0

Ah, the murder ballad. From “Tom Dooly” to “Stagger Lee” to “Pretty Polly” to more modern takes like “Caleb Meyer,” the category has permeated folk music the world over with its dark narratives and moral high grounds. Grammy-winning quintet The SteelDrivers are no strangers to the genre, their catalog full of songs like “If It Hadn’t Been For Love” and “Shallow Grave,” garnering tens of millions of streams and becoming fan favorites at live shows. But the band’s latest single, “The River Knows,” might be the most quintessentially SteelDrivers murder ballad yet.

“I wrote this with Daniel Ethridge and Tom Douglas,” recalls SteelDrivers singer and fiddler Tammy Rogers. “I had the title and most of the storyline in mind,” she recalls, “But Tom’s lyrical contributions really took it to another level, and Daniel’s melodic sense and understanding of what makes a great SteelDrivers song combined to make it very special.” A driving rhythm and sharp fiddle play lead into guitarist Matt Dame’s delivery of the setup verse: “She covered up his anger with a little rouge and Maybelline / It turned into a nightmare from a perfect dream.” Follow the link below to find out how the story plays out.

“The River Knows” is the latest single from The SteelDrivers’ upcoming album, Outrun—their first album with new label partner, the iconic Sun Records. Out May 23rd, Outrun features the classic, blues-infused bluegrass sound the band has been known for for two decades now, freewheeling and fun, rich with stories and singalongs alike. Beyond the ever-evolving musical nature of The SteelDrivers, this seamless ebb and flow between intricate bluegrass and the hardscrabble blues, another key element of Outrun is this underlying tribute to late founding member Mike Henderson. And though Henderson passed away in 2023, his memory and presence is still profoundly felt by the group, onstage and in the studio.

Fans can stream or purchase “The River Knows” today at this link, check out The SteelDrivers’ previously-released single, “Outrun,” here, and pre-order or pre-save Outrun ahead of its May release on Sun Records right here.

In addition to rolling out their new album, The SteelDrivers are celebrating quite the milestone this year with the announcement of The SteelDrivers 20th Anniversary Tour. “Tough times never last, but tough people do,” says SteelDrivers bassist, Mark Fleming. “To be celebrating our 20th anniversary, still touring and releasing a new project on Sun Records, is proof of the SteelDrivers’ resilient personnel and catalog of original material we have produced.” “We have been planning and looking forward to this 20th anniversary tour for about a year and half,” adds Rogers. “Time sure flies by when you’re doing what you love. We couldn’t be more excited to celebrate this achievement and share some new music with all our Steelheads!”

Leftover Salmon Announce New Album ‘Let’s Party About It’ and 35th Anniversary Red Rocks Show

0

In celebration of their 35th anniversary, Leftover Salmon, the legendary bluegrass-rooted jam band, is thrilled to announce their new studio album, Let’s Party About It – due out on May 9 via Compass Records.  Along with the album announcement, the band has shared the first sampling of the new album with the release of “Big Wheel.”  The message is simple, according to Leftover Salmon’s Vince Herman: “The world keeps turning. Find a spot to watch it fly by and ride the wheel.”

The new studio album reaffirms their status as pioneers of blended bluegrass and showcases their unmatched musical chemistry. For the first time ever, the band wrote the album together in a single session as a group.  Longtime friend of the band and storied songwriter Aaron Raitiere (Lady Gaga, Lukas Nelson, Ella Langley, Lainey Wilson, Anderson East, The Lone Bellow, Trace Adkins, and more) also joined the band for the writing session. The resulting album captures the energy and camaraderie that have defined Leftover Salmon’s three-and-a-half-decade-long career.

The album was recorded at Compass Sound Studio (formerly Glaser Sound Studio, aka “Hillbilly Central”), the iconic birthplace of Outlaw Country, with the band joined by special guests such as Del McCoury (vocals), Sam Bush (fiddle, mandolin), Jason Carter (fiddle), Jeff Coffin (saxophone), and more. The band captured an unmatched level of talent and energy, which shines through on every track.

To help commemorate their 35th anniversary, Leftover Salmon will take their celebration to one of the most iconic venues in the country: Red Rocks Amphitheatre on May 26, 2025. This momentous concert will also feature rising bluegrass stars Kitchen Dwellers as a co-headliner, plus Clay Street Unit, along with special guests Bill Payne (Little Feat), Laurie Lewis, Jason Carter, AJ Lee and many more guest appearances before they embark on their Summer Tour with The Infamous Stringdusters and Kitchen Dwellers.  Tickets and up-to-date news can be found at leftoversalmon.com.

Bootsy Collins Drops ‘Album of the Year #1 Funkateer’ Featuring Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg, Dave Stewart & More

0

Today, funk legend Bootsy Collins releases his 23rd studio album Album of the Year #1 Funkateer out now on Bootzilla Records/ Roc Nation. Listen to the album here and the lead single “Bubblepop” featuring Ice Cube and Fantaazma here.

Bootsy Collins, even at his 73 year-old, funk legend, wise-elder status, remains a deeply curious, experimental artist who is ever-evolving. This album finds Bootsy in the producer’s chair, with an A&R top hat and the funky bass still in his hands. He’s gathered talent established and new – including Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, Wiz Khalifa, and Dave Stewart, as well as newcomers October London, Harry Mack, Baby Triggy, Fantaazma, and more.

“When I start on a project now, it’s about getting the energy from people around me,” says funk maestro Bootsy Collins. “Because the way I came up, with a band, I don’t ever want to lose that. It’s important to me to see who the universe brings for me, and I’ve been really blessed that every time I want to do a new record, I get these incredible musicians around me, right on time. And that’s what this album is about—hooking up with different musicians and artists, and mainly a lot of young people.”

The result is a genre-bending kaleidoscope of funk, punk, rock, r&b, pop, and even a little electronic futuristic vibes as Bootsy contemplates AI. He is letting his alter egos – Bootdullivan, Bootzilla, Caspar the funky ghost, and Bootronix among others – join the party, with seductive jams (“Pure Perfection”), futuristic exploratory musings (“I.Am.AI.”, “Ubiquitous” – a true jam), pure funk fun (“Bubblepop”, “Fishnets”, “Chicken & Fries”) and unexpected rock-pop genius (“Satellite”).

Talking about his new Album of the Year #1 Funkateer leads Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Collins to revisit the most pivotal moment in his legendary career, when James Brown hired the Pacemakers—the band led by teenage Bootsy and his brother Catfish—to replace his backing group in 1970.

“I understand now why we were really important at that particular time for James Brown,” says Collins. “It wasn’t just the music. It was because we were lit up, and I understand that more now. With the young artists that are really on fire, I get lit up, and it reminds me that you don’t have to just stand around and not be feeling it, you can be absorbing all this fresh, new energy. I get off on that. I guess you can say that I moved from being a player and now I’m a coach. I want to be looked at as a help, a mentor, somebody they can look up to and trust. That’s my goal.”

In addition to working with young artists like Barbara Teleki (whose blazing guitar rips up “Barbie T & Me”) and the mysterious Bootdullivan, Collins brought in some other legendary contributors to help him mix things up on Album of the Year, including longtime friend Dave Stewart of Eurythmics.

“I asked Dave if he would be interested in collaborating,” says Collins, “and that sparked the first vibe of, yeah, I can stretch out—I can make some rock and funk and merge that together with some hip-hop. That’s what we did on the first single, ‘The Influencers.’”

“Then on ‘Satellite,’ I heard him playing acoustic guitar and that put me in the right mood,” he continues. “Okay, this can be, like, a real song from Bootsy. I usually don’t do real songs, I guess that’s part of my thing, but that one and ‘Alien Flytrap’ brought me back to why people do songs with a form and a structure and this time, I wanted to.”

The album also reunites Collins with Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, and tha Dogg Pound, all of whom helped keep the P-Funk flag flying by mutating the sound into the West Coast G-Funk era. “Even before we knew each other, we were drawn to each other,” says Collins. “They’ll never forget, and we’ll never forget them, because they kept the fire burning. It’s like we’re each other’s keeper. They can call me, I can call them, whatever you need, I’m there.”

In addition to the new album, Bootsy has many other endeavors including Bootsy’s peace-driven initiative Funk Not Fight, and the new Bootsy Collins Network, the ultimate destination for live entertainment and on-demand content. Dive into a world of electrifying live-streaming channels featuring Pay-Per-View events, exclusive video-on-demand content, and groundbreaking live product launches. 0

You can tell a lot about a musician by what they put on a box set—and maybe even more by what they leave out. For some artists, a box set becomes a vault: packed with rarities, demos, alternate takes, and memories only the most loyal fans could love. For others, it serves as a time machine: transporting listeners across decades in just a few discs. But in every case, it becomes an invitation—into the archives, into the studio, into the heart of the artist. Here are 25 box sets that deliver everything and more.

Bob Dylan – The Bootleg Series Vol. 1–3 (Rare & Unreleased 1961–1991)

An explosion of music, vault material, and unforgettable grooves. This collection opens the door to Prince’s studio genius, revealing just how much magic he created in a single era.

“I love to be the team DJ because the feeling you get from good music before a match can drive you on to win,” Lamine said. “Listening to my Spotify playlist will be like sitting next to the boys in the locker room before a game!”

Fans can find the playlist on the FC Barcelona official Spotify page, or by searching “Barça Matchday By Lamine Yamal.” In addition, the Barça Spotify page features matchday playlists from the likes of PedriAlexia Putellas, and Jules Kounde. Additional FC Barcelona content is also available on our dedicated For the Record hub.

Spotify Invests €1M to Expand Audiobooks in French and Dutch, Aiming to Grow Global Publishing Opportunities

0

Since entering the audiobooks space in 2022, Spotify has positively impacted the industry, paying out hundreds of millions of dollars to rights holders on an annualized basis. In its more mature markets, audiobooks have also become one of the biggest sources of revenue growth for publishers.

Spotify’s data shows a significant increase in unique listeners who are discovering the magic of audiobooks for the first time via the platform. By driving discovery and bringing in new audiences, Spotify is increasing overall audiobook consumption, which provides another avenue of growing revenue for authors and publishers.

Since launching Audiobooks in France and Benelux last October, Spotify has seen an average month-over-month growth of 12% in listeners and listening hours. In France, the company continues to bring a younger, more diverse audience to audiobooks, with nearly 60% of listeners aged 18 to 34 accounting for over half of all listening hours.

In order to continue to build opportunities for authors and publishers, especially in countries where the audiobook market isn’t yet mature, Spotify wants to support audiobook production. Today, the company is announcing a €1 million investment to increase the production of audiobooks in non-English languages, starting with French and Dutch.

This investment reinforces Spotify’s desire to grow the market for authors and publishers, particularly in markets where audiobooks are still growing as a format, while improving the catalog and consumer experience.

“Our aim is to help create long-term value for the publishing industry and build new revenue streams for partners. To do that we must attract new audiences whilst also retaining existing book lovers, and audiobooks can play a key role in that. But at the heart of that must be great books. With less than 3% of French-language books available in audio format today, this is a great opportunity to help publishers and authors find new readers,” said Jérémy Amsellem, Audiobooks Partnerships and Licensing Manager for Europe.

High production costs and slow market adoption have limited the number of non-English audiobooks available to listeners. In France, for example, there are approximately 750,000 titles in French, but approximately 20,000 audiobooks. In the Netherlands, there are approximately 15,000 audiobooks in Dutch from a total physical catalogue of 209,000.

Spotify believes in the power of human narration, and it will continue to work with partners and the narrator community to bring these titles to fans in French and Dutch languages. However, Spotify will also offer Digital Voice Narration as part of this investment to help make audiobook production more cost-effective for partners who require a lower barrier to entry. For listeners, AI-narrated titles will be clearly identified in the description with “this audiobook is narrated by a digital voice.”

Finally, Spotify understands that authors and publishers want to reach the widest possible audience. That’s why all cofunded audiobooks will be nonexclusive and made available on Spotify, with the option to host on any other major platform.

Spotify aims to create the best possible experience for authors, publishers, and listeners, and this investment marks another important step toward introducing audiobooks to new audiences, diversifying its catalog, and providing more choices in more languages than ever before.
