Watch a 22-Year-Old Bob Dylan Captivate The 1963 Newport Folk Festival In Newly Colorized Footage

0

In July 1963, a 22-year-old Bob Dylan walked onto the stage at the Newport Folk Festival and, with a few simple strums and one unmistakable voice, changed everything. On opening night, he delivered “Blowin’ in the Wind” alongside folk royalty Joan Baez, Pete Seeger, and Peter, Paul, and Mary, in front of a crowd of 13,000 people who knew they were witnessing something special.

We’ve always known this moment was historic. But now, thanks to the incredible work of the Toca o Disco YouTube channel, we get to experience it in an entirely new light—literally. The original black-and-white footage has been beautifully colorized, and it breathes fresh life into one of the most important performances in American music history.

Charlotte de Witte Announces Debut Album Charlotte, Shares Acid-Powered Lead Single “The Realm”

0

Charlotte de Witte announces her desperately awaited eponymous debut album, out November 7th, on her own imprint KNTXT, after fifteen years of techno charts, performances, and innovation success and a stunning amount of 25 acclaimed EPs.

On April 10th, fans of the Belgian artist / producer can enjoy a taste of the LP with the release of the opening track & acid-drenched, unstoppable lead single “The Realm”, already a staple in her sets, often as a high-impact opener.

“The Realm” is beautifully muscled and put together, skilfully controlled, swift and powerful like a thoroughbred racehorse. The tightly woven techno beats and acid-spiked synth you can feel in your teeth usher in anthemic spoken lyrics packed with promise – “enter the realm of the unknown”.

Charlotte about “The Realm” and her upcoming debut: “The Realm” is a really special track for me. It marks the beginning of a whole new chapter. It’s the first single from my debut album, and it carries the energy and philosophy that inspired the entire record.

The lyrics capture the essence of what I believe music can do. Techno, and by extension clubbing, has always been about more than just dancing for me. It’s about connection, transcendence and exploration. It’s a way of accessing something unseen, something powerful. There’s a tension and release in the structure that mirrors the feeling of letting go, of stepping into something bigger than yourself.”

“After 15 years of DJing, traveling, and living life through music, releasing my debut album feels surreal. This album is the most personal project I’ve ever worked on. It’s not just a collection of tracks; it’s a reflection of who I am, where I come from, and what continues to drive me: the dancefloor.

Across eleven tracks, this album tells the story of my journey in music so far. Every sound, every transition, is intentional. I followed what felt right, what moved me. And that honesty is what makes this album so special to me. It’s raw. It’s real. It’s emotional. It’s who I am.

“The Realm” as an opening track of the album is an invitation. A doorway into the unknown, into this world I’ve been building through sound. I’m so excited to finally share this first glimpse of the album, and I can’t wait for people to step into this next phase with me.”

Pete Droge Announces First Tour in Over 20 Years

0

Pete Droge announces a West Coast summer tour, his first time back on the road since touring as part of Americana supergroup The Thorns in 2003. Performing alongside his wife and longtime collaborator Elaine Summers, Pete’s set will include new songs and deep cuts from his celebrated 1994 release Necktie Second. The run of shows kicks off on June 8 in Portland, with stops in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Ojai and more.

Pete will also appear at two benefit shows in Seattle this spring – on April 24 at The Crocodile for a concert benefitting SMASH (Seattle Musicians Access To Sustainable Healthcare), and on May 9 at Moore Theatre for the Dreaming In Analog event in memory of beloved music journalist Charles R. Cross.

“Since my last tour with The Thorns in 2003, Elaine and I have racked up countless hours playing and singing in our living room,” Pete says. “We often say, ‘That sounded pretty darn good. It’s a shame nobody got to hear it.’ So we decided to book a few shows close to home and they went amazingly well. The natural next step is to take the show on the road.”

He continues, “It’s always a thrill to work up the new songs and that is especially true this time, since the songs on my forthcoming record are so deeply personal. We’ll be leaning heavily on songs from my debut album Necktie Second to celebrate the fact that it’s getting the double vinyl deluxe reissue treatment this year.”

“These days, I enjoy performing more than ever. That’s partly due to the fact that I’ve grown as a singer and guitar player, but also due to the whole ‘absence makes the heart grow fonder’ factor. I enjoyed those years off the road. It allowed me to spend more time in my studio and explore working as a producer and film composer. But at this stage of my life, I feel driven to get out there and share the music.”

Born in Eugene, Oregon and raised outside Seattle, Pete Droge rocketed to early acclaim on the strength of his 1994 debut, Necktie Second, which prompted the Los Angeles Times to compare his songwriting to Bob Dylan and Neil Young. The lead single “If You Don’t Love Me (I’ll Kill Myself)” became a radio hit and landed a prominent spot in the iconic Farrelly Brothers comedy Dumb & Dumber, and within a year, Pete was on the road supporting Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. He would go on to release a series of well-received solo albums, appear in Cameron Crowe’s Almost Famous, team up with Matthew Sweet and Shawn Mullins to form the The Thorns, record three collections with his wife as The Droge and Summers Blend, and compose a variety of works for film and television. Pete recently announced Necktie Second will soon see a deluxe vinyl re-release, and he is gearing up to release a new album later this year (more details to come).

Sunset Blvd. To Release Ruth Brown’s Lost 1970s Recording ‘Secret Love’ On April 25

0

Sunset Blvd. to release Ruth Brown’s lost 1970s recordings Secret Love on April 25th. During the 1950s, the record industry called New York-based Atlantic Records “The House That Ruth Built.” That’s how important the many hits of R&B singer Ruth Brown were to the label’s early success. But Ruth cooled off commercially during the ’60s, and there was a long stretch during the ’70s where she threatened to fall off the radar altogether.

As it turned out, Miss Rhythm, as she was nicknamed during her heyday, was still making great records, even if precious few of her fans even knew about them. Sunset Blvd.’s new Secret Love compilation gathers them on the two-CD Secret Love, making it clear that these compelling recordings didn’t deserve their obscurity. The first disc contains the entirety of Brown’s 1976 album Sugar Babe, and it was likely the funkiest set she ever cut. Produced by the legendary Jerry “Swamp Dogg” Williams, its tight, surging backing tracks, punctuated by punchy horns and soaring strings, were laid down in Muscle Shoals, rendering “Brown Sugar” (not the Rolling Stones warhorse; Williams wrote everything on the set), “You’re Gonna See A Lot More Of Me Leaving,” and “Stop Knocking” thoroughly contemporary and soulful.

The second disc, combining material from two subsequent Brown albums done at Hollywood’s Gold Star Studios, is an entirely different aural delight. 1978’s You Don’t Know Me showcased Brown in an after-hours trio setting led by pianist Lou Levy as she caressed the Great American Songbook standards “Willow Weep For Me,” “Smile,” and “Skylark” (one exception, “Miss Brown’s Blues,” is a jumping remake of “Hello Little Boy,” her wild 1953 proto-rock and roller for Atlantic). The following year’s Touch Me in the Morning subtly expanded her combo, producer Herb Jeffries escorting Ruth into more contemporary directions: “Touch Me In The Morning,” “Best Thing That Ever Happened To Me,” “I’ll Never Fall In Love Again.”

Taken together, these three “lost” albums present a new and illuminative side of Ruth’s artistry, showing she was eminently capable of venturing in unabashedly contemporary directions even after close to three decades of recording. The Portsmouth, Virginia native made her recording debut for Atlantic in 1949, entering the studio in crutches after a long hospital stay that was the result of a serious auto accident. She hit her first time out with the smoky torch ballad “So Long,” but her biggest sellers of all were up-tempo jumps: “Teardrops From My Eyes” (1950), “5 – 10 – 15 Hours” (1952), “(Mama) He Treats Your Daughter Mean” (1953). Only Dinah Washington rivaled Brown’s regal status among female singers on the R&B hit parade.

“When people spoke about Atlantic, they kind of automatically spoke about Ruth Brown,” she said. The rise of rock and roll changed that to some degree, though Ruth continued to score hits for Atlantic for the rest of the decade. The ’60s were another story-some fine recordings, but no hits. The gigs dried up too, forcing Brown to take menial jobs to get by. “A lot of people are amazed when I talk about the things that I did to survive,” said the late Brown. “But that’s my privilege to tell it, if nobody knew it when it was going on.”

Fortunately, things eventually turned around for Ruth Brown as she became a star all over again during the ’80s and beyond. But the glorious recordings comprising Secret Love fell through the cracks before that took place. It’s time to embrace these hidden gems at long last!
