The Estate of Otis Redding Marks 60th Anniversary of ‘The Great Otis Redding Sings Soul Ballads’

0

The Estate of Otis Redding marks a milestone as March comes to a close, with this month marking the 60th Anniversary of Otis Redding’s sophomore album “The Great Otis Redding Sings Soul Ballads.” Celebrating 60 years since its release in March 1965, Redding’s second studio album displays Redding’s soulful artistry that have been a hallmark of the enduring legacy of his career.

Available via Warner Music’s Rhino Records on all major digital music providers, “The Great Otis Redding Sings Soul Ballads” is a 12-track soul classic. Originally released in 1965 on both Atlantic Records’ ATCO label and Volt, Redding’s second album was his first release for the newly formed Stax sublabel Volt. The album features original works written by Redding and others from the Stax roster, as well as Redding’s performances of some classic soul standards. Among these ballads are Redding’s first Top 10 single “Mr. Pitiful,” “I Want to Thank You,” “Come To Me,” Sam Cooke’s “Nothing Can Change This Love,” and more.

Called the King of Soul, Otis Redding’s thrilling performances and songs have continued to influence generations of listeners around the world, with a musical catalog of performances that includes “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay,” “These Arms of Mine,” “Mr. Pitiful,” “Try a Little Tenderness,” “Respect,” “I’ve Been Loving You Too Long,” among many others. March also marked a milestone for “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay,” with March 16th marking 57 years when the song hit No. 1 on the charts and became the first posthumous No. 1 single in American music history. Also this March, the Otis Redding Foundation marked a milestone in continuing the work of Otis Redding, expanding upon his legacy of giving back with the grand opening of the long-awaited Otis Redding Center for the Arts (ORCA), with its official ribbon-cutting held on March 18th.

Serving students ages 5-18 in music and arts education, ORCA is a testament to the enduring legacy of Otis Redding, who was not only one of the greatest musical artists in the world, but was also a philanthropist committed to giving back to his community and enriching young people through the arts and education. The state-of-the-art facility in downtown Macon, GA has plans for programming that will also serve toddlers and senior citizens later this year. A bronze statue of Otis Redding, honoring “(Sittin’ on) The Dock of the Bay,” will be installed as part of the Zelma Redding Amphitheater on the Center campus later this spring.

Spin Doctors Drop New Single “The Heart of the Highway” Ahead Of ‘Face Full of Cake’ Album

0

Today, ‘90s alt-rock icons the Spin Doctors released “The Heart of the Highway,” the third single from their upcoming LP Face Full of Cake, out April 11 via Capitol Records. Tackling the transient nature of life as an artist, the song is drenched in psychedelic guitars and zigzaging percussion – all tied together by Chris Barron’s unmistakable vocal delivery.

Next month, the band will play a special album release show at New York’s Brooklyn Bowl on April 12 followed by a four-night residency at Park City’s Egyptian Theatre in June and appearances at major festivals like Boston Calling, Bourbon & Beyond and Oceans Calling. This summer, they’ll also hit the road for a tour with Blues Traveler and Gin Blossoms.

“One of the ongoing themes of this band is the juxtaposition of living your dream and doing what you love,” says Barron. “But paying the price of being away from home and the people that you love in order to do that. The song is a bit of a poem about how it feels to be far from home.”

From the album, the band has shared the nostalgic “Rock ‘N’ Roll Heaven,” which imagines an afterlife where the beer stays cold and the amps go up to 11, and “Still A Gorilla” which showcases a noisier, heavier sound and garnered praise from Rolling Stone who said the song is “genuinely surprising and fun, led by a marauding fuzzed-out riff.” The upcoming LP marks their debut on Capitol Records and the first Spin Doctors record with new bassist Jack Daley who joined the band full-time in 2021, rounding out the four-piece including Barron, guitarist Eric Schenkman and drummer Aaron Comess. Recorded at Daley’s Asbury Park, NJ studio, the album features a combination of the easy-going hook-forward songs and freewheeling jam sensibilities they’ve always exhibited with bluesy funk flavor and straightforward rock’n’roll.

“Spin Doctors fans are going to be knocked out by this new record,” shares Barron. “It’s got that vintage Spin Doctors sound of ear candy and denser material that harkens back to Pocket Full Of Kryptonite but with years of experience under our belts.”

Formed in 1988 in New York City, Spin Doctors’ full-length 1991 debut Pocket Full of Kryptonite sold over ten million copies across the world and spawned two massive singles: “Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong,” which reached number two on the Billboard Album Rock Tracks chart, and the now ubiquitous Billboard Hot 100 Top Ten hit “Two Princes,” which was the No. 1 Rock radio hit of 1993 and was nominated for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group at the GRAMMYs. They’ve appeared on SNL, played major festivals like Glastonbury and opened for The Rolling Stones. And after three decades and nearly two thousand shows, Spin Doctors remain as committed as ever.

Step-by-Step Guide to NIST 800-171 Compliance

0

By Mitch Rice

Did you know that small and mid-sized businesses comprising the government supply chain were hit by more than 70 percent of cyberattacks in 2024?

Thus, today, the security of sensitive data is not something optional; it’s a necessity. That said, if your organization has some responsibility to handle Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) with U.S. federal agencies, you’re under a contractual obligation to comply with NIST Special Publication 800-171.

Whether you’re a defense contractor, IT vendor, or manufacturer, not complying is not just going to mean losing business or paying legal penalties; it is going to expose critical data to dangerous actors.

But the good news?

There’s no need to be overwhelmed by compliance, as we are here to help you.

This is a step-by-step guide to the NIST 800-171 framework for you to follow, which would help you protect your systems, meet federal regulations, and be ready for new cyber threats that can occur in 2025 and beyond.

What Is NIST 800-171?

NIST 800-171 sets forward a collection of security controls aimed at protecting Controlled Unclassified Information (CUI) in non-federal information systems and organizations. Proper information handling was the aim behind its development, as sensitive government data should continue to remain secure in the hands of contractors and third-party organizations.

NIST 800-171 was originally mandated by the Defense Federal Acquisition Regulation Supplement (DFARS) and has turned into a standard for every organization doing business with federal or government agencies.

Nevertheless, staying compliant is a challenging task as there are numerous technicalities involved. Hence, you need professionally created editable NIST 800-171 compliance policies for your organization. These editable policy templates save you a significant amount of time and labor costs.

Why Is Compliance Important?

Failure to comply with NIST 800-171 can result in:

  • Loss of government contracts
  • Legal liability for data breaches
  • Reputational damage
  • Disqualification from future bidding opportunities

In addition, compliance is usually a prerequisite for other frameworks, such as CMMC (Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification), making compliance a foundational requirement for future security endeavors.

So, in order to start your NIST 800-171 compliance journey, proceed with the below-mentioned steps.

Step 1: Understand 14 Control Families

The NIST 800-171 framework consists of 14 families of security requirements. Each family covers a specific area of cybersecurity, including:

  1. Access Control
  2. Awareness and Training
  3. Audit and Accountability
  4. Configuration Management
  5. Identification and Authentication
  6. Incident Response
  7. Maintenance
  8. Media Protection
  9. Personnel Security
  10. Physical Protection
  11. Risk Assessment
  12. Security Assessment
  13. System and Communications Protection
  14. System and Information Integrity

Understanding these categories is a foundation for a compliance assessment of your organization’s current state.

Step 2: Conduct a Gap Analysis

Perform a gap analysis comparing your cybersecurity control to NIST 800 171 requirements. This process will help you:

  • Identify missing or inadequate controls
  • Prioritize remediation efforts
  • Understand the scope of necessary improvements

This step is often done by many organizations via automated tools or consultants so that the assessment is comprehensive and accurate.

Step 3: Develop a System Security Plan (SSP)

A System Security Plan (SSP) is a key requirement of NIST 800-171 compliance. This document outlines:

  • Your current security controls
  • How each control is implemented
  • Any deficiencies or areas for improvement
  • Planned mitigation strategies

The SSP should be detailed, kept up to date regularly, and aligned with the real IT environment. This should be understood as your cybersecurity playbook.

Step 4: Create a Plan of Action and Milestones (POA&M)

Once you have cleared your gap analysis, you will find non-compliance areas and will need a POA&M (Plan of Action and Milestones). This document lays out:

  • Specific steps needed to address each deficiency
  • Responsible personnel
  • Target completion dates

Having a POA&M demonstrates to agencies that your organization is intentionally working towards full compliance.

Step 5: Implement Necessary Security Controls

After you have received your SSP and POA&M, start pushing or improving your security controls. Some common updates include:

  • Enforcing multi-factor authentication (MFA)
  • Encrypting sensitive data at rest and in transit
  • Enhancing access controls and audit logs
  • Providing regular security awareness training
  • Improving incident response protocols

System upgrades, process changes, and training employees to match the necessary standards may be involved in this stage.

Step 6: Monitor and Maintain Compliance

NIST 800-171 compliance is not a simple check to be completed once. It is critical for ongoing monitoring and maintenance to continue ongoing protection.

Best practices include:

  • Regular vulnerability scans and risk assessments
  • Updating the SSP and POA&M as systems evolve
  • Continuous training and education
  • Periodic internal audits

Establishing a compliance culture in your organization allows you to stay compliant, as threats and technologies are always changing.

Step 7: Be Audit-Ready

Government agencies or primes may conduct audits or request documentation to verify compliance. To be audit-ready, make sure:

  • Your SSP and POA&M are current and accurate
  • All implemented controls can be demonstrated
  • Logs and audit trails are preserved
  • Staff are prepared to answer compliance-related questions

Being prepared minimizes the risk of failed audits and contract disruptions.

Step 8: Prepare for CMMC

The Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) is gradually replacing self-attestation with third-party audits. NIST 800-171 forms the foundation of CMMC Level 2, which is required for organizations handling CUI.

By fully implementing NIST 800-171, you position your organization to meet future CMMC requirements with minimal friction.

Final Thoughts

Achieving NIST 800-171 compliance is a crucial step for organizations that work with the federal government. It not only protects sensitive data but also ensures your business remains competitive and contract-eligible.

The process may seem complex, but by breaking it into clear, manageable steps—understanding control families, conducting a gap analysis, creating your SSP and POA&M, and implementing controls—you can navigate the path to compliance efficiently and effectively.

Cybersecurity is no longer optional. Start today, stay vigilant, and set your organization up for long-term success.

Met with critical acclaim, Uncut Magazine awarded El Viejo an 8/10 rating as their “Americana Album of the Month” while Holler awarded it an 8.5/10 rating, saying “Wise, honest and fun, it’s a collection for the good times and the bad, resonating whether you come out swinging or come up short.” Glide Magazine said “El Viejo is a stunning character study of gamblers and loners moving from card game to card game, perfectly bridging modern Americana with the likes of Jerry Reed, Del McCoury and Marty Robbins with a Springsteen-like sense of storytelling in three-minute bursts” while No Depression said “Listening to El Viejo is like cracking open a dusty, leather-bound book about the Old West, populated by rough-around-the-edges characters at the end of their ropes.”

Lund says, “I’m excited to get my ENTIRE catalogue out on vinyl! Some of the older albums have been out of print forever and the super early ones have never been on vinyl. I’ve been digging through all of it and there were songs I barely remember writing. Pretty cool trip down memory lane. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.”

Lund has also announced the launch of The Dark Horse Vinyl Club where fans will have access to extremely limited color versions of each title, a signed poster, free shipping, 24 hour exclusive access to purchase limited edition merch, entry to win autographed test pressings, and other exclusive offers. Of the project, the group shares, “We’ve been playing together since college and this album really captures who we are as a band. It felt a little nostalgic making it, like we were sitting around a fire talking about the moments we’ve experienced together over the years; the good, the bad and the dumb. We hope that everyone can find themselves in these stories and it helps them remember what it felt like to be young and unafraid.”

The Vegabonds are Daniel Allen (vocals, acoustic guitar), Richard Forehand (guitars, pedal steel), Beau Cooper (keyboards), Paul Bruens (bass) and Bryan Harris (drums).

Sneezy Announces Genre-Defying EP ‘Feed The Funk’ And Shares Tour Dates

0

Chicago’s funk-soul rebels Sneezy are back with Feed The Funk—a groove-soaked, genre-blurring EP that’s equal parts party starter and soulful odyssey. Out June 6, 2025, the project is now available for pre-order as a deluxe 2-LP vinyl, offering fans a tangible slice of the band’s electrifying chemistry.

Packed with eleven vibrant tracks, Feed The Funk is an audacious display of Sneezy’s genre-defying artistry. The EP flows seamlessly through influences of funk, hip-hop, blues, and rock, showcasing the band’s stellar musicianship and undeniable chemistry. Led by the invigorating single “We Movin’ Up,” the record exudes a feeling of triumph and grit, radiating infectious energy and positivity. The song, lauded by Live For Live Music as “an effervescent banger,” captures Sneezy’s unstoppable spirit and message of perseverance.

A few other standout moments on the album include “Lemonade Stand,” a crowd-favorite from the band’s extensive live repertoire that continues to thrill audiences with its signature blend of playful hooks and irresistible rhythms. Another gem, “Lechuga,” epitomizes Sneezy’s musical range as it transitions from a haunting acoustic opening, layered with harmonica and rich imagery evoking the struggles of western expansion, into a blues-heavy masterpiece that crescendos with a precise and exhilarating instrumental breakdown.

“The eleven tracks on this album are the culmination of a new creative process we collectively developed throughout 2024,” explains Austin Lutter (electric guitar). “Following initial songwriting sessions and rehearsals in February, we took a leap and debuted the entire new catalog live on our Colorado tour in March. Through spring and summer, we workshopped the songs live—fine-tuning the nuances and letting the music evolve naturally. By September, we hit the studio prepared to recreate that live energy on the floor at Echo Mountain.”

The tracks on Feed The Funk were born during a unique week-long band retreat, where each member took turns leading the creative process. The result is a cohesive yet diverse collection of songs that highlight both individual talents and collective synergy. Recorded at the iconic Echo Mountain Studios in Asheville, NC, the EP was crafted under the production prowess of Grammy-nominated Josh Blake, known for his work with genre-spanning legends like Lettuce, Billy Strings, Marcus King, and Eric Krasno. Blake’s expertise shines through each track, capturing Sneezy’s live energy while delivering polished studio magic.

“We absolutely had to record at Echo Mountain again—we tracked our last EP, Flower Child, there and really loved the results. At Echo, there’s a beautiful, great sounding live room where we can capture the full band playing together. That raw energy is everything to our sound, though it’s tricky to get on tape. We transformed Echo into our living room for the week. Josh Blake and Kenny Harrington are absolute wizards, and with Echo Mountain relocating later this year, we couldn’t miss the chance to cut one last album in that legendary room,” Lutter added.

Feed The Funk arrives on the heels of a major milestone for the band. Following their electrifying debut on Jam Cruise 21, where Sneezy earned rave reviews as “favorite new discovery” (via JamBase), the group is preparing for an action-packed summer tour. Fans can catch them supporting Pigeons Playing Ping Pong on a four-show run this April, followed by coveted performances at Rooster Walk, Mountain Music Festival, and Northlands Music and Arts Festival, and Burning Daylight. Known for transforming stages into vibrant spaces of connection and joy, Sneezy’s live performances are undeniably a must-see for music lovers. At a time when music feels deeply digital and disconnected, this project arrives as a fresh and defiant testament to the power of live music, instrumentation, and human connection.

Pre-order the 2-LP vinyl edition of Feed The Funk today to be among the first to experience Sneezy’s most adventurous and emotionally compelling work yet. Current projections indicate the shipping date for vinyls is June 6th.

Phygital Retail: Blending Mall Kiosks with Digital Store Fixtures

0

By Mitch Rice

The retail industry is undergoing a dramatic transformation as physical and digital experiences merge into what experts call phygital retail. At the forefront of this revolution are mall kiosks and store fixtures, which have evolved from simple display units into sophisticated engagement platforms. These compact yet powerful retail solutions now seamlessly blend online convenience with in-person shopping experiences, creating a new standard for customer interactions. The integration of digital technology into traditional mall kiosks and store fixtures represents one of the most significant retail trends of 2025, offering brands innovative ways to connect with consumers.

Modern mall kiosks have transformed into high-tech experience centers that go far beyond their traditional role as temporary sales points. Today’s advanced kiosks feature interactive touchscreens, augmented reality capabilities, and instant checkout options that create memorable shopping moments. Similarly, digital store fixtures have revolutionized how products are displayed and merchandised in physical retail spaces. These smart fixtures incorporate elements like digital price tags that update in real-time, motion-activated lighting, and even built-in tablets that provide additional product information. The combination of these technologies creates a shopping environment that feels both futuristic and familiar to consumers.

The shift toward phygital retail experiences is being driven by changing consumer expectations. Today’s shoppers want the convenience of online shopping combined with the tactile experience of physical retail. Mall kiosks now fulfill this demand by offering virtual try-on capabilities for cosmetics and apparel, allowing customers to test products without physical samples. Digital store fixtures enhance this experience by providing detailed product information, customer reviews, and even styling suggestions at the touch of a button. This seamless integration of digital and physical elements creates a shopping journey that feels personalized and effortless for consumers.

One of the most significant advantages of modern mall kiosks is their ability to collect valuable customer data while providing engaging experiences. Interactive kiosks can track which products customers interact with most, how long they spend at different displays, and what information they request. Similarly, smart store fixtures equipped with RFID technology can monitor inventory levels in real-time while gathering data about customer preferences. This wealth of information allows retailers to optimize their product offerings, improve store layouts, and create more targeted marketing campaigns. The data collected through these phygital touchpoints provides insights that were previously only available to e-commerce businesses.

The flexibility of mall kiosks makes them particularly valuable in today’s rapidly changing retail environment. Unlike traditional brick-and-mortar stores, kiosks can be easily relocated or redesigned to accommodate new products or seasonal promotions. This adaptability allows brands to test new markets with minimal risk and quickly respond to emerging trends. Digital store fixtures offer similar flexibility, with modular designs that can be reconfigured to create different shopping experiences throughout the day or week. This level of agility is becoming increasingly important as consumer preferences continue to evolve at an unprecedented pace.

Several forward-thinking brands have already demonstrated the power of phygital retail through innovative implementations of mall kiosks and digital store fixtures. A major electronics company achieved remarkable success by transforming their kiosks into interactive gaming stations where customers could test new products. A luxury fashion brand redesigned their store fixtures with smart mirrors that suggest complementary items based on what customers are trying on. These examples show how the strategic integration of technology into physical retail spaces can drive engagement, increase sales, and create memorable brand experiences.

Looking ahead, the potential for phygital retail experiences seems limitless. Emerging technologies like artificial intelligence and holographic displays promise to take mall kiosks and store fixtures to even greater heights. AI-powered shopping assistants could soon become standard features in kiosks, offering personalized recommendations based on individual preferences. Advanced digital fixtures may incorporate facial recognition to greet returning customers and recall their previous purchases. As these technologies mature, they will further blur the lines between online and offline shopping, creating truly seamless retail experiences.

The environmental impact of retail is also being addressed through innovations in mall kiosks and store fixtures. Many brands are adopting sustainable materials and energy-efficient designs for their physical displays. Digital elements reduce the need for printed signage and disposable marketing materials, contributing to more eco-friendly retail operations. Some forward-thinking retailers are even using their kiosks and fixtures to educate consumers about sustainability, creating a virtuous cycle of environmental awareness and responsible consumption.

Alison Brown and Steve Martin Team with Tim O’Brien for Reflective New Single “5 Days Out, 2 Days Back”

0

Banjoists Alison Brown and Steve Martin team up with bluegrass icon, vocalist/mandolinist Tim O’Brien, on their new single “5 Days Out, 2 Days Back,” their latest collaboration which will be included as part of a collection of songs by Brown and Martin to be released this year via Compass Records.

Martin’s lyrics tell a story familiar to all touring musicians of balancing life on the road with the pull of loved ones at home. Coupled with O’Brien’s warm, emotive vocals and Brown’s fresh yet familiar melody, the song has a modern sensibility while still connecting to bluegrass and folk traditions.

Martin says: “I’m so happy to be back playing with Alison, Tim O’Brien and all the great musicians I’m so fortunate to work with. “5 Days Out, 2 Days Back” is Alison’s and my tribute to all us road musicians.”

Brown thought from the start that O’Brien’s inimitable voice and rhythmic mandolin style would be a perfect fit for the song. “Tim is one of the all-time greatest singers in bluegrass. From the first demo we recorded together, he brought the perfect energy and spin to it, drawing on his many years of touring to bring the story to life.”

O’Brien comments: “Alison Brown and Steve Martin compress a year of a touring musician’s life into a few minutes on their new single. Our protagonist finds a path between the conflicting pulls of family and the road, plus I sing it really good!”

Rounding out the track is a band of bluegrass A-listers including Bryan Sutton (guitar, harmony vocals), Stuart Duncan (fiddle), Todd Phillips (bass) and Vickie Vaughn (harmony vocals).

Brown and Martin have released a series of collaborations, including Foggy Morning Breaking (from Brown’s 2023 album On Banjo) as well as their 2024 release Bluegrass Radio, which have achieved #1 chart status on bluegrass radio and accumulated over 35 million views on social media. Brown and Martin’s most recent release “Wall Guitar” revolves around an unrequited love and was released last November, featuring country legend Vince Gill. Brown and Martin will continue to release new music throughout the year and are set to perform at The Hollywood Bowl on June 18, as part of Rhiannon Giddens: American Tunes, a one-night only event celebrating American music.

“5 Days Out, 2 Days Back” will be available on all digital platforms via Compass Records today.

Smokey Robinson Shines at 85 with Soulful Double A-Side Ahead of New Album ‘What The World Needs Now’

0

Four-time Grammy winner Smokey Robinson’s soulful vulnerability have swept audiences away for over 60 years. Last month, he turned 85, but judging by his latest multi-track single, out now via Gaither Music Group, Robinson’s unmistakable voice is as smooth and timeless as ever. This double A-side features a lilting “Three Little Birds,” and an elegant “What A Wonderful World,” both from Robinson’s upcoming album, What The World Needs Now, out April 25th on Gaither.

Robinson partnered with TalkShopLive and gave an in-depth interview about the uplifting new album on April 18. As part of the partnership, randomly selected CDs purchased through the platform will include inserts signed by the artist. Check out the interview and pre-order from TalkShopLive here. He also discussed the record in an in-studio video you can watch here.

Robinson’s new multi-track single shows that his mellifluous tone, impeccable delivery, and expressive vibrato are as heavenly now as they were decades ago. Robinson eases his honeyed tenor into a reggae lilt on his version of Bob Marley’s 1977 classic, “Three Little Birds.” He captivates on “What a Wonderful World,” a song originally made famous by Louis Armstrong in 1967. Here, Robinson’s buttery vocals melt beautifully over lavish strings, crystalline piano, subtly gorgeous acoustic guitar accompaniment, and dreamy, stacked backup vocals.

Robinson has been called inspiring and iconic, and he was called “America’s “greatest living poet” by Bob Dylan. He has over 4,000 songs to his credit, and he’s sold out shows all over the world for many decades. And he shows no sign of slowing down. This year finds Robinson celebrating the 50th anniversary of his 1975 breakthrough solo album, Quiet Storm. His upcoming “Legacy Tour” will highlight the album anniversary and celebrate all his top hits throughout the decades.

Somehow, amid album commemorations and getting ready for the road, Robinson found time to go into the studio and record a soul-stirring song collection bursting with hope, love, and unity. What The World Needs Now is an inspirational album in a time where people need timeless music with a message. The 10-track album includes heartfelt renditions of classics and originals. What The World Needs Now was produced by Warryn Campbell who is best known for his work with Mary Mary, Kanye West, Yolanda Adams, Jennifer Hudson, and Stevie Wonder.

Robinson has won numerous awards, including four GRAMMY Awards, a GRAMMY Living Legend Award, the Library of Congress Gershwin Prize, and a NARAS Lifetime Achievement Award. He’s earned an Honorary Doctorate at Howard University, Kennedy Center Honors, a BET Lifetime Achievement Award, and the National Medal of Arts Award from the President of the United States. In addition, Robinson has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame—once as a solo artist, and again as a member of the Miracles—and he’s also been inducted to the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame. Robinson has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
