The Swell Season Return with New Single “People We Used To Be” and Stirring Video Shot in Prague

0

The Swell Season, the acclaimed duo of Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova, today shared their lush, sweeping new single ‘People We Used To Be – and begin a new chapter for the band. Augmented by strings and anchored by their poignantly intertwining and soaring vocals, the song was produced by Sturla Mio Thorisson at Iceland’s Masterkey Studios and is The Swell Season’s first since 2023’s ‘The Answer Is Yes.’

“It’s a song about trying to reconcile with what feels like an end of an era and allowing one’s self to mourn the People We Used To Be while choosing to fight for the person we love and the life we built with them,” explains Irglová. “It is a song of defiance and determination as much as heart aching nostalgia.” ‘People We Used To Be’ arrives alongside a video directed by Radim Vanous and produced by Little Greta in collaboration with The Swell Season. Shot in Prague, the clip nods to Hansard and Irglová’s performances in the beloved 2007 film Once, which first catapulted the duo into the spotlight.

After the success of Once – which won them the “Best Original Song” Academy Award for ‘Falling Slowly’ – The Swell Season released their sophomore album Strict Joy in 2009, which drew critical praise from Rolling Stone, Billboard, SPIN, American Songwriter, and NPR Music, among others. In the years since, both artists have continued to have highly successful individual careers: Irglova has released three solo albums, most recently 2022’s LILA; Hansard has released five solo albums, including 2023’s All That Was East Is West of Me Now.

Art d’Ecco Announces “Serene Demon” Spring North American Tour

0

Art d’Ecco has announced select North American spring tour dates in support of his acclaimed fourth full-length album, Serene Demon, out now via Paper Bag Records. The tour kicks off May 27 in Seattle, running through June 13 back home in Victoria, BC. Tickets on-sale Friday, March 28 at 10am local times.

Serene Demon is Art d’Ecco’s most ambitious album to date, but fans won’t struggle to recognize his handiwork. Like the many groundbreaking artists who have inspired Art d’Ecco over the years, he intends to keep nudging his listeners forward, prompting them to explore – and accept – unfamiliar ideas. “Once you’ve trained the ear of the audience, it establishes a new precedent,” he concludes. Tastes change and evolve, and outliers mature into icons. “That moves pop music forward in the most beautiful, organic way, and I’m constantly trying to exist within that paradigm. How do I challenge myself and throw the rule book out, but still make this the catchiest, quirkiest piece of music possible? I like existing between those two worlds.”

Art rented an apartment in New York for two months, walking the streets listening to Henry Mancini, Ennio Morricone, John Barry and François de Roubaix, as he dreamed up cinematic visions of the people passing by. Pushing his limits and taking risks during the writing process for Serene Demon, some more successful than others, but always leading him to a place he had not yet traveled before.

Ecstatic when Grammy Award-winning producer and engineer Joe Chiccarelli (The White Stripes, The Strokes, Beck, U2) expressed interest in working on his new material, Art soon came to realize that their methods and concepts didn’t align as closely as hoped; after two weeks of production in Vancouver (including some “great ideas” that made it to the final record), they parted ways, after which Art took over complete creative control in the studio. Yet despite his “ferocious, introverted independence,” Art recognized that he couldn’t realize his ambitious vision single-handedly. Nearly 30 musicians contributed to making Serene Demon, and three of the new songs blossomed from collaborative exercises with his rhythm section, drummer Malcolm Holt and bassist Pascal Le Vasseur.

Great pop music accommodates big ideas and simple truths with equal finesse, but don’t expect a record – even one as ambitious as Serene Demon – to solve all life’s mysteries. “If you’re constantly searching for answers or hope to bestow any relevance to the existence that you’re living, then take a pause and realize that life is happening right now,” concludes Art. “You don’t need to constantly defer happiness. Just exist in the moment.”

Tour Dates:

Limahl Reimagines America’s Classic “A Horse With No Name” With a Retro-Futuristic Spin

0

“The original ’70s track has been a favorite on my ‘Evening’ playlist for a long time,” says UK music topliner LIMAHL about his reimagining of the classic folk/rock hit “A Horse With No Name” that is released via Christopher Music on Tuesday, March 25, 2025. “The idea to reimagine it was always ticking away in the back of my mind.”

The song was first released in 1971 in the UK (1972 in the US), the original was composed and performed by folk rock trio America and topped Billboard’s Hot 100 and Easy Listening charts (it reached #3 on the UK Singles chart and was certified gold in 1972). Adapting the ’70s musical aesthetics and injecting a bit of ’90s electronica, Limahl’s updated version of the song carries a bit of a retro-futuristic quality that feels equally at home in 2025.

“The ’90s have been enjoying a revival which prompted me to experiment with the drums/rhythms from that decade,” he explains. “Then the jerky, ‘Jupiter 8’ analogue synthesizer/sequencer was added with a filtering envelope and it became an important personality in the track.” He also toyed with the iconic non-lexical “la la” vocal and updated it, incorporating it further into the song. Absent on the ’70s original but included in this rendition is the ‘la la’ motif in the intro, the key-change on the last verse, and in the final chorus, the ‘la la’s’ crisscrossing the main lyric with the melody. Saying that almost as an afterthought, guitar from standout musician Steve Cooper was added, and it became the “icing on the cake.”

The resulting track transforms the classic folk track with a mesmerizing and hypnotic synth-dominated swirl, making the song pop and click in ways that would have been unimaginable in the 1970s. The equally mesmerizing accompanying video which premiered via OUT.com who calls the track “a lush, retro-future reimagining of America’s folk/rock classic” bursts with surreal and psychedelic imagery, reflecting the song’s hallucinatory spirit. “The video created with ‘Goat Noise Photography,’ added a captivating new dimension,” Limahl explains. “I’m intrigued to see how audiences will respond to this new interpretation!”

Winning the hearts of millions of fans in the ’80s as the lead singer of British band Kajagoogoo, Limahl enjoyed the instant celebrity of hitting the top of the charts with their debut single “Too Shy” (75million+ streams to date) which was followed by two more Top 20 hits “Ooh To Be Ah” and “Hang On Now” (all of which he co-wrote). Limahl struck out on his own and soon re-emerged in the charts again with his first solo single “Only For Love,” That was quickly followed with the Giorgio Moroder-produced worldwide smash “Neverending Story” (151million+ streams to date),” the theme song from the hit film of the same name.

Very much active in pop culture, Limahl continues to perform throughout Europe. In 2024 alone, he performed live and/or co-hosted the SENSE charity gala at London’s Westminster Church Hall with the Princess Royal in attendance (the event raised over £100k), the reopening gala at London’s National Portrait Gallery after its £3m renovation, the London gala for TERRENCE HIGGINS TRUST HIV Charity which raised 100k+, and the premiere of new stage musical adaptation of Neverending Story (La Historia Interminable) in Madrid (now playing in Barcelona). This July 2025, Limahl has been confirmed for Cologne Pride in Germany.

In addition, Limahl’s worldwide smashes “Neverending Story” and “Too Shy” were featured on hit television series Black Mirror (Episode: “Bandersnatch”), American Horror Story (Season Nine: “1984”) and Stranger Things (Season Three).

Dan Wilson Releases “Laurel” from Instrumental Album ‘Good Night Los Angeles’ Ahead of Semisonic Summer Tour

0

The GRAMMY-winning musician, songwriter, and producer Dan Wilson released a new song “laurel” from his forthcoming instrumental album good night, los angeles that will be released on May 9. An 18-song collection of piano recordings born out of a regular series of Sunday evening recordings he would post to social media, the album was recorded entirely on a 1918 Vose & Sons upright piano that was found on the streets of Hollywood. The album is Wilson’s first instrumental release and offers a rare glimpse into the award-winning songwriter’s raw, unvarnished creative process.

“Here’s the fourth composition I’ve released from good night, los angeles, titled ‘laurel.’ I think this is the one where I realized I was completely free chordally from pop music. These songs could go anywhere, harmonically – and that was very liberating,” explains Wilson.

“Laurel” follows the release of the three-song EP suite of “deervale / moorpark / tujunga.” The release featured an official video by art director Yazz Alali and illustrator/animator Sarah Nelson, who paired the music with hypnotic animations of mushrooms growing and interacting, their mycelium spreading out through the soil and entangling together to create increasingly complex neural networks.

About the album, Wilson explains: “In January, I was scheduled to announce my first instrumental album, good night, los angeles. The album was born out of a weekly artistic practice: late Sunday nights I would sit down at the piano and improvise a simple, peaceful instrumental piece on the spot. Then I’d share it on Instagram with the caption #goodnightlosangeles. It was a calming and meditative practice for me, and I hoped the songs would have the same calming and meditative effect on listeners. I ended up making nearly 200 of them. Late last year, I compiled my favorites into an album for a January release. But then the wildfires hit my town, and I hesitated. I didn’t want to appear tone-deaf – especially given the album’s title. But now I can’t help wanting to move forward and share this music with the world. I’m from Minneapolis, but I’ve lived here since 2010 and good night, los angeles is a love letter to my adopted city. These are late-night improvised lullabies, and I hope they can help someone put down their worries for a moment and feel the peace of those quiet nights here in LA.”

An instrumental piano album may seem like an unlikely project for an artist so known for his way with words, who last year alone received his first Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song (“It Never Went Away”), won his first CMA Award for Song of the Year (“White Horse”) and took home the GRAMMY for Country Song of the Year (“White Horse”). But in the end, the result is classic Wilson: an evocative work of deep emotion and thoughtful beauty, one crafted purely for the love of the creation and shared in the hopes of forging meaningful connection.

In addition to his new album, Dan Wilson’s band Semisonic has just announced a summer tour supporting Toad The Wet Sprocket which will make stops along the west coast and midwest. Find a full list of tour dates below.

Craft and Bluesville Announce Vinyl Reissues of Buddy Guy’s ‘This Is Buddy Guy’ and Scrapper Blackwell’s ‘Mr Scrapper’s Blues’

0

Craft Recordings and Bluesville Records announce a fresh batch of reissues for two highly influential guitarists: 1968’s This Is Buddy Guy!, which marked the debut live album from the celebrated artist, and Mr. Scrapper’s Blues, the 1962 comeback album from seminal pre-war axeman Scrapper Blackwell. Set for release on May 16 and available for pre-order today, both LPs will be issued on vinyl in partnership with audiophile leader Acoustic Sounds and feature all-analog mastering by GRAMMY®-nominated engineer Matthew Lutthans (The Mastering Lab). The albums are pressed on 180-gram vinyl at Quality Record Pressings (QRP) with faithfully reproduced tip-on jackets. Rounding out each title is an insightful obi strip with new notes by GRAMMY-winning producer, writer and musician Scott Billington. Additionally, the remastered albums are available in hi-res and standard digital audio today.

Since launching in early 2024, Bluesville Records has celebrated America’s bedrock music genre, as well as the trailblazing musicians who contributed to its rich traditions, through handpicked titles—all culled from the catalogs of such legendary labels as Stax, Prestige, Vee-Jay, Vanguard, Rounder and Riverside. Living Blues notes that John Lee Hooker’s Burning Hell album, with its intimate acoustic feel and brutally honest songwriting, “casts a spell” over the listener, while Tracking Angle praises the stereo edition for its “terrific sound,” placing Hooker “on stage in your room.” No Depression highlights the diversity of styles across the Bluesville reissues, showcasing the breadth of Hooker’s prolific career. Similarly, Last Night Blues by Lightnin’ Hopkins and Sonny Terry has earned glowing reviews, with Mojo calling it “excellent” and “hypnotic boogie joy bringers.”

Buddy Guy — This Is Buddy Guy!

An eight-time GRAMMY winner, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and GRAMMY Lifetime Achievement Award Winner, Buddy Guy (b. 1936) has long been counted among the greatest guitarists of all time. A key figure in the Chicago blues scene, whose work as a singer, songwriter and guitarist always straddled the line of blues and rock’n’roll, Guy has influenced multiple generations of musicians (Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, Gary Clark Jr. and John Mayer, to name a few) during his seven-decade-long career.

After relocating to Chicago in the late ’50s, the self-taught, Louisiana-born artist found his footing in the industry, releasing a pair of solo albums, as well as a handful of projects with harmonica player Junior Wells in the ’60s. Those lucky enough to catch Guy in concert, however, were privy to the full breadth of his talents—from his awe-inspiring extended guitar solos to his soulful vocals. Vanguard Records recognized this and sought to capture the power of his electrifying performances with 1968’s This Is Buddy Guy!.

Recorded live at the New Orleans House—an intimate venue in Berkeley, CA—the album puts listeners in the front row, as Guy performs original compositions (including his languid “I Had a Dream Last Night” and the funky “24 Hours of the Day”) with well-chosen covers, such as Little Willie John’s “Fever” and Eddie Floyd’s “Knock on Wood.” Accompanied by a tight-knit band—including saxophonists A.C. Reed and Bobby Fields plus bassist Jack Meyers—Guy is truly at the peak of his prowess.

“Buddy Guy is the most dynamic and influential guitarist to have emerged from the Chicago blues scene, with gospel-shaded vocal chops to match his instrumental skills. He is at his focused best on This Is Buddy Guy!,” writes Scott Billington. “Whether he is playing a simmering line behind his vocal, or spluttering out a solo with the frenzy of a machine gun, his formidable talents are always at the service of sublime passion.”

Scrapper Blackwell — Mr. Scrapper’s Blues

While lesser known than many of his contemporaries, singer, songwriter and guitarist Scrapper Blackwell (1903–1962) was a supremely talented musician of the early 20th century who carved his own path in the blues scene. With a revolutionary style that treaded between jazz and blues, Blackwell was known for his articulate single-note picking on the acoustic guitar—a technique that would inform the electric Chicago blues sound in the following decades.

Born Francis Hillman Blackwell, the self-taught, Indiana-raised musician (who earned the nickname “Scrapper” for his fiery nature) began performing as a teenager. In the mid-1920s, he established a musical partnership with pianist Leroy Carr. The duo quickly gained a following—touring across the US and releasing over 100 sides, including “How Long, How Long Blues” (the biggest blues hit of 1928), plus other soon-to-be-standards like “Mean Mistreater Mama” and “Blues Before Sunrise.” This era also found Blackwell exploring a solo career and recording songs like “Kokomo Blues,” which would later inspire Robert Johnson’s “Sweet Home Chicago.” After Carr’s untimely death in 1935, however, Blackwell withdrew completely from music.

Flash forward to the late ’50s, with the rise of the folk-blues revival, when Blackwell was encouraged to return to the spotlight. In 1961, he recorded a full-length album for Prestige Records’ Bluesville imprint. The intimate solo session, captured in Indianapolis, finds Blackwell on guitar and vocals, as he performs some of his best-known repertoire, including the above-mentioned “Blues Before Sunrise,” the instrumental “‘A’ Blues,” the up-tempo “Little Boy Blues” and “Little Girl Blues,” which features the artist on piano. Tragically, just as Blackwell was primed for a successful second act, his life was taken from him during a random mugging, not long before the album’s release. In the coming years, however, his recordings would influence an array of rockers, bluesmen and folk artists.

“Mr. Scrapper’s Blues . . . is his late-career masterpiece,” declares Scott Billington. “Whether playing a precisely articulated rhythm, or taking off on a daring single-string solo flight, Blackwell was an underappreciated blues guitar original.”

Adventure Awaits: Boost Your Vehicle With Essential Extras

0

By Mitch Rice

Hitting the road or venturing off the uncharted path is such an exciting adventure! But let’s be honest: without the right extras for your car, that thrill can quickly turn into a headache. Whether you’re gearing up for a weekend escape or a cross-country road trip, outfitting your vehicle with the right accessories ensures you’ll enjoy comfort, safety, and convenience.

With the right gear, your car can transform into the ultimate road trip machine, enhancing everything from storage to performance.

For instance, roof racks open up your vehicle, providing plenty of extra space for your camping gear. So, having an idea of what vital add-ons to add to your car can significantly improve your off-roading adventures.

Thankfully, this article will dive into the very best automobile upgrades so that you are well-prepared for whatever surface or setting you face when you bring your adventures into high gear.

1. Essential Storage Solutions Make Organizing Your Gear Easy

For many, roof racks are among the best ways to maximize the payload capacity of your vehicle. They keep space free by carrying large items without taking away your interior space. They also transfer weight evenly, improving vehicle stability, especially while traveling over uneven or rocky road surfaces.

For instance, if you own a Toyota Hilux, adding Toyota Hilux roof racks to your vehicle can significantly enhance your space, and you can easily transport larger gear like kayaks, surfboards, bicycles, or camping equipment. Besides roof racks, there are a few must-have upgrades every adventurer should possess.

For convenience, consider combining roof racks with add-ons like roof baskets or rooftop tents. The roof baskets provide a tidy way of keeping loose gear in order, all stored in a single, secure point. The rooftop tents offer a space-saving, raised sleeping option, allowing you to camp comfortably without occupying ground space.

Weather-proofed and robust designs are what you should seek when selecting these add-ons, as they protect your gear and withstanding weather conditions.

2. Take Your Ride to Top-Level Security and Protection

No matter how thrilling the journey ends, safety must always come first. Start equipping your vehicle with high-grade all-terrain tires because these are more conducive to gripping various road surfaces, including rocky and muddy roads. Add a front bumper guard to protect your vehicle against unexpected road bumps.

Additional upgrades are skid plates to guard your chassis against rugged ground, winches to pull you out of trouble, and light bars with LEDs to enhance your nighttime visibility. All these upgrades will make your vehicle more than capable of coping with whatever your escapade may bring your way.

3. Improve Your Driving Experience

Road trips are all about the journey, so enhancing your comfort with a few interior upgrades will make a significant difference. Start with nice seat covers with proper lumbar support so your long drives become less exhausting.

Moreover, consider a portable cooler or refrigerator as well because it provides the option of pre-storing and preparing food and drinks ahead of time, so there does not need to be a stop every few minutes to refill. Consider adding a multi-purpose dashboard organizer to keep your must-have items handy for extra convenience.

Conveniently, this handy little bit of kit tidies your vehicle, and it’s straightforward to grab your map, device, or snack when out and about. And sunshades and weather mats will keep your vehicle’s interior spick and span no matter what’s going down with the weather outdoors.

4. Stay Connected and Informed With Advanced Navigation Tools

For travel into new countries, accurate navigation tools are essential. A built-in GPS navigation system can be convenient, but an especially designed off-road GPS with added mapping and trail data is more valuable. They come with advanced features such as map views of topography and waypoints needed when mapping new lands.

Aside from the GPS, a walkie-talkie or CB network proves helpful when traveling in areas with bad signals. With this form of communication, one remains in contact with the rest of the members in your group, both in terms of safety and coordination while on your journey.

5. Save Your Investment with Ongoing Care and Maintenance

Condition your vehicle in its prime before each trip. Regular maintenance will provide performance assurance and accessories and upgrades with longer lifespans. Checking brake pad condition, engine oil level, and tire pressure when about to travel must become habitual. Grease and wash mobile components, particularly over bumpy or muddy terrain.

Also, don’t forget to inspect your roof racks, light bars, and other add-ons periodically. Secure bolts and screws so there are no surprise breakdowns on your trip. Consider creating a checklist of items to inspect before each trip so your trip remains snag-free and enjoyable.

Final Thoughts

Fitting your vehicle with necessary accessories enhances your travel experience and promises comfort, security, and convenience on travel. Be it robust roof racks and navigation tools or comfort-oriented interior accessories, each addition plays a vital role in creating epic road trips.

Let discovery take over, and hit the road on your next road trip prepared to face whatever comes your way.
