Borderline Unaffordable: How Skyrocketing U.S. Visa Fees And Tariffs Are Shutting Out Canadian Musicians

0

For decades, Canadian artists have looked to the U.S. as a crucial market for touring, networking, and career growth. But in 2024, skyrocketing visa fees and bureaucratic delays have turned what was once a rite of passage into a financial nightmare. With costs rising 250%, even established bands are struggling to justify crossing the border, while emerging artists are being priced out of international success before they even begin.

This isn’t just an inconvenience—it’s a major economic and cultural shift with long-term consequences for the Canadian music industry. Less U.S. touring means fewer revenue streams, less global exposure, and a growing divide between Canadian artists and the world’s largest music market. So what exactly is happening, and what does it mean for the future of Canadian music? Let’s break it down.

  1. Skyrocketing Visa Costs – In 2024, U.S. visa fees for touring musicians increased by 250%, with P visas (for individual performers or groups) jumping from $460 to $1,615 and O visas (for individuals with “extraordinary ability”) rising from $460 to $1,655. For a five-piece band, this means nearly $8,000 in fees, before travel, hotels, and crew expenses. Many independent artists simply can’t afford it.

  2. Long and Unpredictable Processing Times – Standard processing for U.S. artist visas can take 4-6 months, forcing bands to apply almost a year in advance. Even with the $2,500 premium processing fee, which speeds up approval to 15 days, delays still happen.

  3. Touring Becomes a Financial Gamble – U.S. tours require upfront investment in visas, travel, and accommodation, with no guarantee of breaking even. For example, a mid-level indie artist expecting $5,000 per show on a short run of 10 U.S. dates might see half their earnings disappear in visa and travel expenses, making small-scale tours financially unsustainable.

  4. Unfair Disadvantage vs. American Artists – U.S. bands can tour Canada with a one-time fee of CAD $100 per person or bypass work permits entirely at certain venues. Meanwhile, Canadian acts face thousands in fees, restrictive approval processes, and strict border scrutiny.

  5. Impact on Emerging Artists & Showcases – Major industry events like SXSW, Coachella, and Bonnaroo are crucial for artist discovery, but high visa costs prevent many Canadian acts from attending.

  6. Fewer International Collaborations – The cost of U.S. visas has deterred Canadian artists from recording or touring with U.S. musicians. In 2022, Canadian singer Charlotte Cardin was forced to rethink her U.S. collaborations due to visa expenses, while some artists now opt for European tours where entry requirements are less restrictive.

  7. Festival & Touring Opportunities Drying Up – Festivals like AmericanaFest, Lollapalooza, and SXSW used to feature a strong lineup of Canadian acts, but rising costs have reduced participation. In 2023, fewer Canadian artists applied for U.S. visas, and some have opted for UK/EU tours instead, shifting focus away from the U.S. entirely.

  8. Shift Toward Domestic & European Markets – Artists who once relied on breaking into the U.S. market are now prioritizing UK and European tours, where work visas are either cheaper or unnecessary for short-term stays. Acts have focused on expanding their European presence, but missing out on the massive U.S. audience means fewer long-term career opportunities.

  9. Economic Hit on Canadian Music Industry – Less U.S. touring means fewer merch sales, performance fees, and brand partnerships, affecting both artists and the businesses that support them. Canadian music companies, from indie labels to agencies have said that high visa costs are making it harder to justify investing in U.S. touring for developing artists.

  10. Declining Global Presence for Canadian Music – Historically, Canadian acts like Drake, The Weeknd, and Arcade Fire have dominated global markets thanks to U.S. exposure. With fewer up-and-coming artists able to tour the U.S., the next generation of Canadian talent may struggle to break through internationally. Without solutions, Canada risks losing its foothold as a major music exporter.

The impact of rising U.S. visa fees on Canadian musicians isn’t just about losing a few shows—it’s about an entire ecosystem being disrupted. From independent artists to major-label acts, the financial burden of international touring is creating a divide between those who can afford to expand their reach and those who are forced to stay home. And with fewer Canadian artists breaking into the U.S., the ripple effect extends to managers, agents, promoters, and the Canadian music industry as a whole.

At a time when music is more global than ever, restrictive policies shouldn’t be forcing Canadian talent to look elsewhere for opportunities. Whether it’s government intervention, industry advocacy, or new touring strategies, a solution is needed—before the next generation of Canadian artists loses its shot at international success.

5 Ways Musicians Can Build a Fanbase on YouTube

YouTube isn’t just a place to watch music videos—it’s where fanbases are built, careers are launched, and viral moments turn unknown artists into household names overnight. But how do you stand out in a sea of content? It’s not just about uploading a great song and hoping for the best. It’s about strategy, consistency, and giving people a reason to hit that subscribe button. Here are five ways to grow your audience and turn casual viewers into lifelong fans.

1. Post More Than Just Music Videos

Yes, your official music videos are important, but they’re only part of the equation. Fans want more than just the polished final product—they want to see the process, the personality, and the behind-the-scenes moments that make you you. Try posting acoustic performances, lyric breakdowns, tour diaries, or even casual Q&A sessions. The more ways people can connect with you, the more likely they are to stick around.

2. Engage With Your Audience Like You Would at a Show

You wouldn’t ignore your audience at a concert, so don’t ignore them on YouTube. Respond to comments, pin fan shoutouts, and create community posts to keep the conversation going. Host live streams where you play new songs, take requests, or just chat about music. When fans feel like they’re part of something, they’ll keep coming back for more.

3. Create Covers That Get You in Front of New Audiences

Cover songs are one of the easiest ways to get discovered. If a song is trending, jump on it with your own unique spin. A great cover can introduce you to fans of the original artist and bring new listeners into your world. But don’t just copy—make it your own. Whether it’s an acoustic take on a pop hit or a rock version of an R&B classic, put your stamp on it.

4. Optimize Your Titles, Descriptions, and Thumbnails

YouTube is a search engine, which means your video titles and descriptions matter. Use clear, compelling titles that tell people what to expect. Include relevant keywords so new fans can find you when they’re searching for music like yours. And don’t overlook thumbnails—bright, high-quality images with bold text can make the difference between someone clicking or scrolling past.

5. Be Consistent and Stick to a Schedule

If you only post every few months, it’s easy for people to forget about you. The biggest YouTube artists treat their channels like a regular TV show—fans know when to expect new content, and that keeps them coming back. Whether it’s once a week or twice a month, set a schedule and stick to it. The more consistently you show up, the faster your audience will grow.

Building a fanbase on YouTube doesn’t happen overnight, but every video you post is a chance to connect with someone new. Show up, engage, and give people a reason to subscribe—not just for the music, but for the artist behind it. The next viral moment could be yours.  For all your publicity needs, feel free to email Eric@ThatEricAlper.com or call me at 647-971-3742. With 25+ years of experience and a deep passion for connecting artists to audiences, I’m here to help you make an impact.

“Saturday Night Live” and the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame have joined forces to create “SNL: Ladies & Gentleman… 50 Years of Music”, a comprehensive and immersive exhibit celebrating the iconic show’s musical history, storied performances, and sketches. The exhibit opens to the public at the Museum in Cleveland on Friday, May 23, 2025.

Through state-of-the-art video installations and a first-ever virtual experience, this collaborative and in-depth exhibit will bring to life some of the show’s most memorable musical performances from the early years of the show – from Blondie, RUN-D.M.C. and Mick Jagger to more contemporary stagings of artists like Billie Eilish, Miley Cyrus and Sabrina Carpenter.

The exhibit will journey fans through these cultural touchstone moments by mirroring the flow of the show, beginning with the cold open and moving into the home base stage where the hosts announce the musical guests. Fans will move through a re-creation of the famed Studio 8H facade in Rockefeller Center, unique to this exhibit, and have an opportunity to create their own moment as host of the show. Fan-favorite musical sketches will also be brought to life through featured costumes from The Blues Brothers, D–k in a Box, Sweeney Sisters, and more. As fans exit through the “Goodnights” section they will be surrounded by displays of 50 years of indelible “SNL” musical performances.

Other elements of the show such as the iconic photography bumpers and notable stage props will be woven throughout, and fans will be able to leave the exhibit with portraits of themselves in select bumper formats from the custom built SNL50 photo booth.

Playing throughout the exhibit’s run, in the museum’s Foster Theater, will be a special, exclusive 20-minute edit of the critically acclaimed documentary “Ladies & Gentleman… 50 Years of SNL Music” directed by Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, featuring never-before-seen musical performance footage, playing hourly. Additionally, a specially curated, printed guidebook with a foreword authored by former cast member Fred Armisen will be available for fans to use as a pilot for their experience.

“SNL: Ladies & Gentlemen…50 Years of Music” will also be the Rock Hall’s first-ever exhibit to have a robust digital companion and joins several other exhibits that include both Spanish and English translations and offer fans with auditory, visual, and sensory impairments additional options for their experience.

“’Saturday Night Live’ has brought amazing live music into our living rooms for 50 years, including ground-breaking appearances by over 100 of our Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Inductees. Along with the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Foundation, we are thrilled to be joining with our friends at ‘SNL’ to share this exciting story with the millions of fans who walk through our doors in Cleveland or online at RockHall.com every year,” said Greg Harris, President & CEO of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum.

Fans visiting the SNL50 exhibit at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame will also have access to shop exclusive co-branded merchandise only available at the Museum store.

Other exhibits currently running at the Rock Hall include our “2024 Inductees Exhibit” featuring artifacts from Cher, Ozzy Osbourne, Mary J. Blige and more from the class of 2024; “Revolutionary Women in Music,“ “Bon Jovi: Forever,” and “1984,” which explores the biggest year in pop music’s history and includes rarities from artists such as Tina Turner, Prince, Bruce Springsteen, Madonna and more.

As always, the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is free to all city of Cleveland residents through the CLE VIP program sponsored by Key Bank. For more information and to purchase tickets and plan your visit please visit: www.rockhall.com

Glass Animals’ 2024 Tour of Earth captivated audiences worldwide with sold-out performances across North America, Europe, the UK, and Australia, including headline shows at legendary venues like Madison Square Garden, Kia Forum, O2 Arena, and the Sydney Opera House. The crowds have been another level of incredible…the outfits, the big crowd projects that keep blowing us away all over the world, the synchronised dances…and the inflatable cows. They’ve just felt so epic and joyful that 1. we had to do a little mini documentary of the tour so far…and 2. it only made sense to do a few more shows around the festivals we had planned. Also… everyone was livid that we missed Florida, Minnesota, and Oregon. I get barraged with messages every day. Peer pressure works. We are coming to see you.” – Dave Bayley, Glass Animals

The Tour of Earth supports Glass Animals’ critically acclaimed fourth studio album, I Love You So F***ing Much, released in July 2024 via Republic Records. ‘One to One: John & Yoko’ Documentary Explores Lennon’s 1972 NYC Concert and His Most Transformative Era

0

On August 30, 1972, John Lennon played his only full-length post-Beatles concert at Madison Square Garden. But what led to that moment? One to One: John & Yoko, directed by Oscar-winner Kevin Macdonald, explores 18 pivotal months in Lennon and Ono’s life, from their move to Greenwich Village to their evolving approach to activism. The film immerses viewers in their world—restored concert footage, archival TV clips, and a meticulously recreated NYC apartment where they watched everything from Nixon’s speeches to The Price Is Right. With newly remixed audio by Sean Ono Lennon, this documentary is a seismic revelation that challenges everything we thought we knew about John & Yoko’s American journey.

10 Samples You Didn’t Know Were in Songs You Love

0

Music is a time machine, and samples are the hidden Easter eggs that connect generations of songs in ways we never imagined. Some of the biggest hits in pop, hip-hop, and rock secretly borrow from deep cuts, obscure soundtracks, and forgotten classics. You might think you know your favorite songs inside and out, but listen closely—there’s a whole world of sonic history hiding in the background. Here are 10 surprising samples that have been living rent-free in your playlist all along!

1. Rihanna – “SOS” (2006) // Soft Cell – “Tainted Love” (1981)

That infectious hook in Rihanna’s “SOS” isn’t just inspired by ’80s synth-pop—it is ’80s synth-pop! The track heavily samples Soft Cell’s version of “Tainted Love,” which itself was a cover of a 1965 soul song by Gloria Jones. Rihanna’s club-ready anthem brought the classic melody to a new generation, proving that some songs never go out of style.

2. Mariah Carey – “Fantasy” (1995) // Tom Tom Club – “Genius of Love” (1981)

Mariah didn’t just sing over a beat—she turned an underground new-wave groove into a chart-topping pop masterpiece. The funky bassline and dreamy synths of “Fantasy” come straight from Tom Tom Club’s “Genius of Love.” The original is a staple of early hip-hop, but Mariah made it her own, adding that signature whistle register and one of the most iconic choruses of the ’90s.

3. Eminem – “My Name Is” (1999) // Labi Siffre – “I Got The…” (1975)

That wobbly, hypnotic guitar line that kicks off Eminem’s breakout single? It comes from British folk-funk artist Labi Siffre’s “I Got The…,” a song that’s way smoother than you’d expect for something tied to Slim Shady’s chaotic debut. Fun fact: Siffre only allowed the sample to be used if Eminem removed some homophobic lyrics from the original track.

4. Daft Punk – “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” (2001) // Edwin Birdsong – “Cola Bottle Baby” (1979)

Before Kanye flipped Daft Punk for “Stronger,” the French duo was already sampling deep disco cuts. The robotic funk of “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” is built around Edwin Birdsong’s “Cola Bottle Baby,” a jazzy, synth-driven groove from the late ’70s. Birdsong later said he was thrilled to see his music come back in such a fresh way.

5. Beyoncé – “Crazy in Love” (2003) // The Chi-Lites – “Are You My Woman? (Tell Me So)” (1970)

That ba-ba-ba-BAAAH! horn riff that kicks off “Crazy in Love” didn’t come from a modern studio session—it’s lifted straight from The Chi-Lites’ 1970 track. Jay-Z and producer Rich Harrison knew it was gold, speeding it up and turning it into one of the most recognizable openings in pop history.

6. The Weeknd – “Out of Time” (2022) // Tomoko Aran – “Midnight Pretenders” (1983)

The Weeknd’s signature retro sound reached all the way to Japan for this one. “Out of Time” borrows heavily from Tomoko Aran’s dreamy city pop classic “Midnight Pretenders,” keeping the silky vocals and smooth production almost untouched. It’s a perfect example of how 80s city pop has found a new audience decades later.

#7. Janet Jackson – “Got ‘Til It’s Gone” (1997) // Joni Mitchell – “Big Yellow Taxi” (1970)

Janet Jackson’s laid-back, neo-soul groove in “Got ‘Til It’s Gone” features a familiar voice in the background—Joni Mitchell’s iconic line “Don’t it always seem to go” from “Big Yellow Taxi.” The sample, woven seamlessly into the track, gave Mitchell her first-ever appearance on an R&B hit, proving that great songwriting transcends genres.

8. Dr. Dre & Snoop Dogg – “The Next Episode” (1999) // David Axelrod – “The Edge” (1970)

That ominous, cinematic melody in “The Next Episode” isn’t from a modern movie score—it’s pulled from a jazz-funk instrumental by David Axelrod. The eerie strings and horns made for a perfect West Coast G-funk anthem, proving once again that Dre knows how to dig deep for gold.

9. Bruno Mars – “Uptown Funk” (2014) // The Gap Band – “Oops Up Side Your Head” (1979)

You can’t hear “Uptown Funk” without moving—but part of that irresistible groove comes from The Gap Band’s “Oops Up Side Your Head.” The similarities were so strong that The Gap Band ended up getting a songwriting credit after the song was released. Funk never goes out of style—it just keeps getting repackaged.

10. Lorde – “Royals” (2013) // Paul Simon – “Take Me to the Mardi Gras” (1973)

That crisp, clicking beat in “Royals” is actually a classic hip-hop sample. The drum break comes from Paul Simon’s “Take Me to the Mardi Gras,” which has been used by everyone from Run-D.M.C. to Missy Elliott. Lorde’s minimalist take made it feel brand new, but its roots go way back.

Every song is a story, and sampling adds unexpected plot twists along the way. Whether it’s a vintage soul record, a forgotten disco groove, or a jazz-funk deep cut, the music of the past is always shaping the hits of today. Next time you hear a song you love, listen closer—you might just hear history hiding in plain sight.

Chris Rea Celebrates Shamrock Diaries 40th Anniversary with Green Vinyl Reissue

0

Legendary singer-songwriter Chris Rea is marking the 40th anniversary of his acclaimed album Shamrock Diaries with a special reissue on 1LP green recycled vinyl set for release on 16th May 2025. Released in 1985, the album remains a fan favourite and a testament to Chris’ enduring musical legacy.

Shamrock Diaries was a deeply personal and introspective work, drawing inspiration from Chris’ Irish heritage and his own life experiences. The album’s raw honesty and emotional depth resonated with listeners, solidifying Rea’s reputation as a master storyteller. You can pre-order it here.

Chris Rea’s time in Ireland inspired the material for Shamrock Diaries. In a recent interview included in the 2019 deluxe version, Rea noted the similarities between Dublin and his hometown of Middlesbrough, which had a significant Irish population. Further, Chris has familial connections to Ireland. Two of the album’s most popular songs, Stainsby Girls and Josephine, were written for his wife Joan and daughter Josephine, respectively.

After his mother passed away, Chris returned to his hometown of Middlesbrough. He told Q Magazine that upon his return, he found his childhood home had been demolished. The experience of finding his childhood home missing, after three years of extensive touring in Europe, was so disorienting that it felt like a scene out of a science fiction movie, and inspired him to write Steel River.

Chisel Hill, another one of Chris’ songs, is named after a house he purchased near Roseberry Topping, a distinctive hill south of Middlesbrough. Chris revealed that Chisel Hill is an emotional song for him, as it was written during a happy time in his life, when he had a house, a child, and his career was doing well. He reflected that the person who wrote that song must have been content, and admitted that the song still makes him emotional.

The 40th anniversary of Shamrock Diaries is a testament to Chris Rea’s enduring impact on the music world. His ability to connect with listeners through his heartfelt lyrics and soulful melodies continues to inspire and resonate with fans of all ages.

This will be a very special night of music for all of the fans; I know everyone is gonna get rocked and uplifted right along with us…come on out!” – Ed Kowalczyk
“It was August 1994, and we, Collective Soul, were on our way to Woodstock. As our van pulled up to the grounds, another one pulled up beside us and out jumped the band +LIVE+. We became immediate friends, exchanging guitar picks with each other as soon as we met. Since that day, the Ed and Ed show has been nothing but pure, genuine friendship, and rock and roll. We’re excited that 31 years later, we still not only enjoy each other’s company, but enjoy playing music. It’s going to be a fun summer sharing it with fans, friends and +LIVE+.” – Ed Roland

Tickets will be available starting with artist presales beginning Tuesday, March 18 at 10am local time. Additional presales will run throughout the week ahead of the general onsale beginning Friday, March 21 at 10am local time.

+LIVE+ have sold over 23 million albums worldwide and earned two No. 1 albums: “Throwing Copper” and “Secret Samadhi.” Their catalog is filled with such gems as “Lightning Crashes,” “I Alone,” “All Over You” and “Lakini’s Juice,” which live on today as classics on rock radio.

“Throwing Copper” – which the band celebrated in 2019 with a deluxe, 25th anniversary edition, along with a global tour across major festivals, amphitheaters and arenas – produced the band’s biggest single, “Lightning Crashes,” which was No. 1 at Modern Rock radio for 10 consecutive weeks. “Throwing Copper” reached No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 and eventually surpassed sales of 10 million albums sold, with Rolling Stone honoring the album with placement on its “1994: The 40 Best Records From Mainstream Alternative’s Greatest Year.”

“Secret Samadhi” (1997) immediately shot to No. 1 on the Billboard Top 200 and eventually went double-Platinum. The release of the Platinum-selling “The Distance to Here” (1999) turned +LIVE+ into an international powerhouse and moved the band from arenas into stadiums. +LIVE+ has been and remains today a global concert juggernaut.

Hailing from Atlanta, Collective Soul celebrated their 30th anniversary in 2024 with the release of their highly anticipated and critically acclaimed 12th studio album, “Here To Eternity,” on their Fuzze-Flex Records label. It was written and produced by Roland and co-produced by Shawn Grove, and recorded at Elvis Presley’s estate in Palm Springs, California. They’re the only other music artist to ever record at the historical landmark. Very special guest appearances include Paul McCartney guitarist Brian Ray, longtime Sheryl Crow bandleader Peter Stroud, and Mickey Thomas of Jefferson Starship.

With 11 studio albums – including 1995’s self-titled “Collective Soul” album, which went triple-Platinum – and eight No. 1 hits, frontman and chief songwriter Roland is unwaveringly driven in his desire to double down on doing more of what he does best: making music, sweet music, both in the studio and onstage. Seeing eye to eye, and ear to ear, is part of the secret sauce of why Collective Soul continues to both record and play together at an uncompromised level of high quality.

They were one of only five artists to have performed at both Woodstock festivals in ’94 and ’99. With electrifying newer material that accompanies the everlasting Collective Soul classic hits “Shine,” “December,” “The World I Know,” “Heavy,” and “Where The River Flows,” these five fiery rockers are only just getting started with the next phase of their thriving career that has moved millions of records and wowed multitudes of fans across the globe.

One of Canada’s most influential rock bands, Our Lady Peace has shaped the alternative rock landscape for over three decades. With multi-Platinum-selling albums and global hits “Superman’s Dead,” “Clumsy” and “Somewhere Out There,” OLP has sold over 5 million albums worldwide and garnered more than 360 million streams. They are among the elite 13 Music Canada Diamond-certified artists, holding three-times-Triple and five-times-Double-Platinum certifications. With 19 Top 10 radio hits in Canada – including five No. 1 singles – OLP has won four JUNO Awards and 10 MuchMusic Video Awards, making them one of the most celebrated bands in MMVA history.

Their extensive touring history includes sharing stages with The Rolling Stones, Guns N’ Roses, Smashing Pumpkins, Foo Fighters and Alanis Morissette. As they close the “OLP30” chapter with “OLP30 Vol. Three,” the band looks ahead to a monumental year that includes their induction into Canada’s Walk of Fame on June 14, and a hometown show at Toronto’s Budweiser Stage on July 24.

Greylin’s music explores the deep shifts that accompany life’s transformations. A singer and songwriter whose work blends emotional introspection with life, Greylin draws inspiration from the natural world, finding beauty in its raw, unfiltered forms.

Greylin debuted in her first major show in the summer of 2024, opening for the legendary Smashing Pumpkins in Muskoka, Canada. On the horizon, Greylin is set to release new music produced by Gavin Brown, who is known for his work with artists Billy Talent and Three Days Grace. Her next single will be featured in an upcoming thriller movie, marking an exciting new chapter in her growing career.

Though primarily a musician, Greylin’s talents and interests extend far beyond music alone. Recently, she finished filming a horror movie in Belize, set against the mysterious backdrop of the Mayan ruins in San Ignacio. Greylin’s diverse interests showcase her range as an artist, blending the eerie and the beautiful in both her music and visual storytelling.

Shack Announce First Tour in 18 Years

0

Renowned as much for the beauty of their songwriting as the meandering, adventure-prone history as a band, Liverpool’s masters of melody, Shack have announced their first tour since 2007, bringing their critically and fan-adored songbook back home with a first SOLD-OUT show at Liverpool’s 2,000-capacity Olympia Theatre on Fri 25 April 2025. Featuring the West Coast-by-Kirby street poetry of Michael Head and guitarist brother, John Head, the addition of three, further nationwide dates have shown the enduring strength of feeling for one of Britain’s most revered bands.

With limited tickets remaining, Shack, with a line-up including original bassist, Pete Wilkinson, go on to play additional dates in May, taking in Glasgow, Manchester and London (SOLD OUT).

Starting their gentle return by celebrating the band’s remarkable albums with a run of special vinyl reissues last year, beginning with 2003’s Here’s Tom With The Weather and then 90’s classic, HMS Fable, the brothers’ fate in reuniting Shack was seeded as their promotional duties took them to a surprise BBC 6 Music live session with Marc Riley and Gideon Coe last December. Overwhelming fans with deep cuts and classics, including the sing-a-long hymnal Comedy, hopes rose that, despite the loss of integral member and drummer, Iain Templeton in late 2022, the band could be on course to return.

“Iain was a massive part of Shack,” explains John Head. “I didn’t ever think that this could happen because Iain was no longer around. His contribution was enormous and he was one of us. It’s still a massive thing him not being here. He remains irreplaceable, but we have someone on board now in Ian (Skelly – The Coral), who will do an amazing job and is a huge fan of what Iain did with Shack himself.”

Enlisting the help of The Coral’s dexterous drummer, alongside the multi-instrumentalist skills of Nathaniel Cummings, a member and co-songwriter in Michael Head’s Red Elastic Band, the 2025 version of Shack is one of prodigious musicianship and long-standing friendships. Whilst some of the faces on stage will be new, some of Shack’s old habits have, thankfully, proven to be the hardest to break.

“We got together only the day before the 6 Music session,” explains Michael Head. “It was so natural. Whatever it is that we’ve got, it still works. Like John said to me, it was like slipping back in to a favourite pair of slippers. It’s what we’ve always done, all those years at our ma’s we’d just be playing together, guitars in every room, doing her head in. Nothing’s changed.”

Although band never officially split up, Shack have only performed together, largely without ceremony for a charity gig in Liverpool in 2008 and a one-off in Glasgow in 2016. Each member found different turn-offs from the band’s winding road in 2007, exploring new projects following a tour in support of a greatest hits compilation, Time Machine. Surprising themselves that the gap between that last tour and today has spanned 18 years, the old bandmates have wasted no time in getting reacquainted.

“We’ve practiced together again for the first time,” reveals Wilkinson. “When we played ‘Undecided’, I can’t explain how easy it was. There’s just this feeling. I just know when Mick’s going to make a change or bring an idea in, like we always did, it just happens so easily. We’ve been playing together since I was 19, and it was apparent then that it was going to be easy for us to gel. He didn’t need to spend time explaining stuff to me, which is most important to Mick. It happens then, as it does now, without words.”

Whilst Michael Head and The Red Elastic Band have routinely honoured the songs of both Shack and the Head brothers’ original band, The Pale Fountains during recent tours, any songs written by John or co-written by the brothers have remained largely off set-lists. Having hinted at the full band return of Undecided, as well as playing Soldier Man and Butterfly in their 6 Music session, both brothers remain tight-lipped on what might make it into the final set list.

With five cult- and straight-up classic albums to choose from, including their debut, 1988’s Zilch, 1995’s Waterpistol and 2006’s The Corner Of Miles And Gil, the extensive Shack songbook will be condensed into a compact, distilled and potent celebration of the band’s legacy.

Thu 1 May – Glasgow, St. Luke’s
Fri 2 May – Manchester, O2 Ritz
