Toronto pop-punk mainstays The Mendozaz return with their most ambitious and unhinged release yet, the eight-song concept EP ‘The Completely Fictional History of This Great Nation of Canada’. Fronted by guitarist-vocalist Jonny alongside Michael on vocals and bass and Dic on drums, the band double down on everything they do best: breakneck energy, razor-sharp hooks, and self-aware humor dialed to absurd extremes. Built to turn basements, bars, and festival stages into full-blown chaos, the EP captures the reckless spirit that’s made The Mendozaz a staple of Toronto’s punk underground.

Recorded between This Place Needs A Name and Arc Recording Studio with producer Matt Gauthier, the EP pushes their storytelling into stranger, louder territory, with help from members of Joan Smith and the Jane Does and The Meringues on its most profane moments. The video single “A Piercing Shriek of Death” sets the tone, inspired by what Jonny describes as “a very-true Canadian legend that we made up” involving ice fishers, great white sharks, and a blood-curdling scream that left their engineer in hysterics. Across all eight tracks, the EP barrels through tall tales, late-night disasters, and satirical folklore with feral guitars and gang-shout choruses, cementing The Mendozaz as one of the city’s loudest, funniest, and most fearless punk outfits.

Toronto duo Chrome Daphne return with “Stuck (On You),” a hazy and bittersweet meditation on yearning, attachment, and the quiet ache of not being able to let go. Drifting on lush harmonies and hypnotic grooves, the track captures romantic melancholy with a dreamlike intimacy. “I had a relationship that ended very abruptly,” shares Ben. “We went from best friends to complete strangers overnight. There was a lot left unsaid, and I kept catching myself thinking ‘What if I ran into her?’… Eventually, that anxiety started colouring my day-to-day life.”

“There’s this interesting duality of love, obsession, and self-entrampment,” Ben continues. “There’s sweetness in the devotion, but also pain in the inability to move on. Parts of this song feel like a diary entry – I like the honesty and the vulnerability. It feels like I’m in the room with my therapist.” Chris brings that emotional tension to life through layered production that mirrors the push and pull at the song’s core. “It feels like trying to reach someone through fogged glass,” Ben adds. “There’s this cocoon-like warmth in the harmony, especially when the chorus hits.” Following earlier releases “There,” “Little Bit,” and “Location,” the new single further sharpens Chrome Daphne’s late-night, introspective voice.

Toronto-based rock ensemble Original Pairs return with ‘Surface Tension’, their fourth studio album and a charged exploration of personal longing, existential dread, and the human condition. Anchored by Andrew Frontini’s resonant baritone, the record unfolds across ten striking musical parables, blending twangy, reverb-soaked guitars, bluesy organ lines, and retro-leaning synth textures from keyboardist Jon Loewen. With Lynda Kraar’s melodic bass and Lisa Logan’s precise, orchestral drumming, the album balances moments of haunting introspection with bursts of raw rock intensity.

“Surface Tension taught us to experiment and improvise. To lean into our musical backgrounds, drawing upon a lifetime of playing and listening to music,” says Frontini. “It’s always intense, trying to get a lot done in a very compressed time period. The whole album was recorded, including overdubs in five days.” At the heart of the album is “Curiosity,” which Frontini describes as “a cautionary tale about the dangers of curiosity – art’s catalyst that can make you crazy.” Recorded live-off-the-floor with no click tracks or digital shortcuts, ‘Surface Tension’ leans into imperfection and emotional honesty, stretching the band into their most ambitious and unflinching work to date.
