Dan Wilson Announces ‘good night, los angeles’ 18-Song Instrumental Piano Album Inspired by Late-Night Improvisations

0

Today, The GRAMMY-winning musician, songwriter, and producer Dan Wilson announced his new album good night, los angeles, an 18-song collection of piano recordings born out of a regular series of Sunday evening recordings he would post to social media. Recorded entirely on a 1918 Vose & Sons upright piano that was found on the streets of Hollywood, the record marks Wilson’s first instrumental release and offers a rare glimpse into the award-winning songwriter’s raw, unvarnished creative process.

Today, Wilson released the first selections from the forthcoming album, accompanied by an animated video for the three-song medley “deervale / moorpark / tujunga.” Each of the album’s 18 tracks are accompanied by videos from art director Yazz Alali and illustrator/animator Sarah Nelson, who paired the music with hypnotic animations of mushrooms growing and interacting, their mycelium spreading out through the soil and entangling together to create increasingly complex neural networks.

About the album, Wilson explains: “Last month, I was scheduled to announce my first instrumental album, good night, los angeles. The album was born out of a weekly artistic practice: late Sunday nights I would sit down at the piano and improvise a simple, peaceful instrumental piece on the spot. Then I’d share it on Instagram with the caption #goodnightlosangeles. It was a calming and meditative practice for me, and I hoped the songs would have the same calming and meditative effect on listeners. I ended up making nearly 200 of them. Late last year, I compiled my favorites into an album for a January release. But then the wildfires hit my town, and I hesitated. I didn’t want to appear tone-deaf – especially given the album’s title. But now I can’t help wanting to move forward and share this music with the world. I’m from Minneapolis, but I’ve lived here since 2010 and good night, los angeles is a love letter to my adopted city. These are late-night improvised lullabies, and I hope they can help someone put down their worries for a moment and feel the peace of those quiet nights here in LA.”

About the video, he adds: “I loved the idea of these songs soundtracking the amazing, hidden life of the forest floor at night. Sarah is a brilliant wildlife artist, and she did such a beautiful job of tapping into the emotional core of these songs and translating that into the natural world.”

An instrumental piano album may seem like an unlikely project for an artist so known for his way with words, who last year alone received his first Academy Award nomination for Best Original Song (“It Never Went Away”), won his first CMA Award for Song of the Year (“White Horse”) and took home the GRAMMY for Country Song of the Year (“White Horse). But in the end, the result is classic Wilson: an evocative work of deep emotion and thoughtful beauty, one crafted purely for the love of the creation and shared in the hopes of forging meaningful connection.

About the forthcoming album, Wilson adds: “The past 12 months have been packed with incredible honors and recognition for my songwriting. Even if these are things I never think about when I’m making the music, it’s sweet to get respect for it afterwards. Mainly though, I’m in it for the inspiration, the process, the moment of creation, the laughs and the seriousness of a recording session, the joy of sharing what we make. I feel luckiest when I’m living the life of an artist. The thing I’m most excited about this year is the release of my improvised piano lullaby album, good night, los angeles. These songs all happened as part of a weekly artistic practice of sitting down at the piano and making up a new instrumental piece on the spot. Sunday night, family is asleep, house is dark, city is quiet; go to the piano and improvise into my phone for just a few minutes; if it’s good, post it online with the hashtag #goodnightlosangeles. Seems like people have found them just as calming and meditative to listen to as they were for me to record. That is its own kind of honor, and one that I deeply appreciate.”

Paul McCartney Tells the Story of His Post-Beatles Journey In “Wings: The Story of a Band on the Run” Book

0

As the Sixties came to a close, Paul McCartney was faced with the daunting prospect of being a solo artist for the first time. Wings’ ascension to the top of the charts with classic albums including Band on the Run, Venus and Mars and At the Speed of Sound, along with the band’s stadium-filling live shows would prove to critics and fans that not all great acts are impossible to follow. Wings: The Story of a Band on the Run is a rousing, stereophonic celebration of the songs, collaborations and performances that would shape the soundtrack of the late 20th century.

Wings: The Story of a Band on the Run by Paul McCartney, edited by Ted Widmer, arrives Tuesday, November 4, 2025.

Drawn from over 500,000 words, based on dozens of hours of interviews with McCartney and numerous key players in the band’s orbit, Wings: The Story of a Band on the Run weaves together the improbable trajectory of Paul McCartney and his newly formed band (featuring co-founding members Linda McCartney and Denny Laine) across the technicolor 1970s until their dissolution in 1981.

“I’m so very happy to be transported back to the time that was Wings and relive some of our madcap adventures through this book. Starting from scratch after The Beatles felt crazy at times. There were some very difficult moments and I often questioned my decision. But as we got better I thought, ‘OK this is really good.’ We proved Wings could be a really good band. To play to huge audiences in the same way The Beatles had and have an impact in a different way. It was a huge buzz,” says McCartney.

Edited by the prize-winning historian Ted Widmer and organized around nine Wings albums, the oral history sheds new light on the immediate aftermath of the seismic global impact of The Beatles’ break-up, as the musical landscape and tastes began to splinter and diverge along with societal views. The narrative follows the various incarnations of the band as they survive a mugging in Nigeria, appear unannounced at UK university halls, tour in a sheared-off school bus with their children, while producing some of the most indelible and acclaimed music of the decade, including: “Mull of Kintyre,” “Live and Let Die,” “Band on the Run,” “My Love,” “Jet,” “With a Little Luck,” “Silly Love Songs,” “Let ‘Em in,” “Junior’s Farm” and more.

With more than 100 black-and-white and color photographs, many never seen before, Wings: The Story of a Band on the Run is part of a larger reexamination and appreciation of the group and their catalog, including the 2024 theatrical release of the rare Wings live-in-studio performance film One Hand Clapping and its accompanying album; 50th anniversary editions of the Wings albums Band on the Run (released February 2024) and Venus and Mars (releasing March 2025); and a forthcoming documentary on Paul McCartney’s solo and Wings-related musical work of the 1970s from Academy Award-winning filmmaker, Morgan Neville.

“Did We Actually Book Them?” Cypress Hill and the London Symphony Orchestra Bring Black Sunday to Life

0

Cypress Hill celebrates the highest of high honors of its storied career with Black Sunday Live at the Royal Albert Hall, a three-day theatrical event and live album both immortalizing the hip hop icons’ now legendary once in a lifetime collaboration with the London Symphony Orchestra.

Arriving at U.S. and Canadian theaters March 30, 31 and April 2 (U.S. only) via Mercury Studios in partnership with Iconic Events Releasing, Cypress Hill and the London Symphony Orchestra: Black Sunday Live at the Royal Albert Hall brings the unprecedented collision of the trio’s 1993 masterpiece with one of the world’s most renowned orchestral ensembles to the eyes and ears of music lovers everywhere. A historic spectacle previously witnessed only by the thousands of Cypress devotees who packed Royal Albert Hall on July 10, 2024, the theatrical premiere and album release of Black Sunday Live at the Royal Albert Hall will allow the world at large to witness the intoxicating dark magic conjured when Cypress Hill and the 70-strong LSO bring this triple-platinum opus to life together.

The film and its accompanying album find B-Real, Sen Dog, Eric Bobo and co. in top form, performing nimbly atop monolithic arrangements running the gamut from ominous to sublime. The majestic classical embellishments to Black Sunday — as well as an assortment of cuts spanning the Cypress catalog — are the masterful work of conductor and arranger Troy Miller, who comments,”I’ve always been excited by the idea of merging genres, and to do it with the most prolific hip hop group of all time and the most exquisite symphony orchestra in the world was an honor! The band gave me free rein on the arrangements and we made something truly unique and mesmerizing – what a sublime collaboration!”

What began as a joke on a 1996 episode of The Simpsons has now become a true multi-cultural milestone. Cypress Hill and the London Symphony Orchestra: Black Sunday Live at the Royal Albert Hall, the feature-length concert film, will be in cinemas for a special theatrical event March 30, 31 and April 2. For further information, go to https://www.iconicreleasing.com/events/cypress-hill/. Cypress Hill and the London Symphony Orchestra: Black Sunday Live at the Royal Albert Hall, the full length live album, will be released June 6 via Mercury Studios.

Naming themselves after a local street in Los Angeles, Cypress Hill burst on the scene in 1991 with the release of their self-titled debut album. The singles “How I Could Just Kill a Man” and “The Phuncky Feel One” became underground hits, and the group’s public pro-marijuana stance earned them many fans among the alternative rock community. Cypress Hill followed their debut with Black Sunday in the summer of 1993, which debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Top 200, garnered three GRAMMY® Award nominations, and went triple platinum in the U.S. Featuring timeless anthems “I Ain’t Goin’ Out Like That,” “Insane In The Brain,” “When The Shit Goes Down,” and “Hits From The Bong,” Black Sunday made Cypress Hill the first rap group to have two simultaneous Top 10 albums, and the first Latino-American hip-hop group to achieve multi-platinum success—a momentum that continued to mine platinum and gold during a succession of albums including III: Temples of Boom (1995), IV (1998), Skull & Bones(2000), Stoned Raiders (2001), Til Death Do Us Part (2004), Rise Up (2010), Elephants on Acid (2018) and certified bangers “Throw Your Set In The Air,” “Dr. Greenthumb,” “(Rap) Superstar,” “(Rock) Superstar,” “Champion Sound” and many more.

Cypress Hill made history once again in 2019 when the group was honored with their very own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 2022, the band released its 10th album Back In Black to critical acclaim, with Kerrang declaring it “solidifies their status as a collective still expanding upon their legacy.” That same year, Cypress Hill released their “Insane in the Brain” documentary, via Mass Appeal’s “Hip Hop 50” franchise in partnership with Showtime. The New York Times praised the documentary as “an often-engaging chronicle of the group”, while Variety declared “the Cypress Hill documentary should put into perspective their pervasive influence and groundbreaking, Latin-tinged hip-hop crossed with booming metallic rock.” On July 10, 2024, Cypress Hill once again made pop culture history, performing a historic show with the London Symphony Orchestra at the Royal Albert Hall. Initially predicted by an episode of The Simpsons 28 years prior, the collaboration was brought to life in a sold-out, one-night-only event that showcased the revered Black Sunday in its entirety, with an unforgettable classical crossover hailed by several publications as a milestone of “hip hop history.”
