Mary Chapin Carpenter and Brandy Clark Announce 2025 Tour Across Iconic Venues

0

Two of music’s most respected songwriters and artists, Mary Chapin Carpenter and Brandy Clark, will join forces for a special tour kicking off this summer. The extensive run includes stops at New York’s Town Hall, Nashville’s historic Ryman Auditorium, Los Angeles’ Wilshire Ebell Theatre, Seattle’s Benaroya Hall, Denver’s Botanic Gardens, Minneapolis’ Orpheum Theatre, Ridgefield, CT’s Ridgefield Playhouse (for two nights), Vienna’s Wolf Trap, Evanston’s Cahn Auditorium, and many more. See below for the complete tour itinerary.

Tickets for most shows will be available for pre-sale starting tomorrow, February 11, at 10:00 AM local time, with general on-sale following on Friday, February 14, at 10:00 AM local time. Full details and on-sale information can be found at www.marychapincarpenter.com or www.brandyclarkmusic.com.

Described as one of music’s “most reliable and empathetic songwriters” (Pitchfork), Mary Chapin Carpenter has sold over 16 million records over the course of her renowned career. With hits like “Passionate Kisses” and “He Thinks He’ll Keep Her,” she has won five Grammy Awards (with 18 nominations), two CMA Awards, and two ACM Awards, and is one of only fifteen female members of the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame.

Carpenter’s album One Night Lonely was nominated for Best Folk Album at the 65th Annual Grammy Awards. In 2023, she received the Poet’s Award at the ACM Honors, recognizing her outstanding and longstanding musical and lyrical contributions. Most recently, Carpenter launched her new podcast, Hope is a Muscle, featuring conversations with people from all walks of life. During its run, the podcast ranked in the top five music podcasts on both Apple and Spotify.

Earlier this year, Looking For The Thread, a collaborative album with Scottish singer-songwriters Karine Polwart and Julie Fowlis, was released worldwide. The Arts Desk praised the album, writing, “It’s only January, but this is an album of the year.” The 2025 tour will feature songs from Carpenter’s entire catalog, as well as new music from her upcoming album, set for release in early summer.

A Grammy, CMA, and Americana Award-winner, Brandy Clark is one of her generation’s most esteemed songwriters and musicians. Adding to her decorated career, Clark won Best Americana Performance at the 66th Grammy Awards and Song of the Year at the 2024 Americana Honors & Awards for her acclaimed song “Dear Insecurity” featuring 11-time Grammy-winner Brandi Carlile. The track is from Clark’s self-titled album, which was produced by Carlile and features her most personal songwriting to date.

Released to overwhelming praise, Forbes called the album “an Americana masterpiece,” while Variety proclaimed, “It further clarifies that she’s one of America’s treasures,” and Billboard declared, “Clark continues to convey her inexorable talents as both a song-crafter and vocal interpreter.”

In addition to her work as a solo artist, Clark has written songs such as “A Beautiful Noise,” the Grammy-nominated duet performed by Carlile and Alicia Keys, and Kacey Musgraves’ “Follow Your Arrow.” She also composed the music for the hit Broadway musical Shucked, alongside longtime collaborator Shane McAnally. For Shucked, Clark won Outstanding Music at the 67th Drama Desk Awards and was nominated for Best Original Score at the 76th Tony Awards, where the show earned nine nominations overall.

Rhino’s Quadio Series Expands with Quadrophonic Releases from Billy Cobham, Aretha Franklin, Curtis Mayfield, and The Spinners

0

Rhino’s Quadio series continues into the New Year with a brand-new collection of high-quality quadrophonic releases. Billy Cobham Spectrum (1973), Aretha Franklin Live At Fillmore West (1971), Curtis Mayfield Roots (1971), and The Spinners Pick Of The Litter (1975). These four seminal albums have been mastered from their original analog four-track Quad mixes.

Quadraphonic sound, or 4.0 surround sound, utilizes four audio channels connected to four speakers positioned at the corners of a listening space. The multi-tracked audio is mixed dimensional, immersing the listener in an expansive soundscape.

The collection is available today as Blu-ray discs with a quadraphonic and 192/24 stereo mix. Currently exclusive to Rhino.com and select Warner Music Group stores worldwide, each title retails for $24.98, with a bundle of all four available for $79.98. Order HERE.

Aretha Franklin played three brilliant nights – March 5, 6, and 7 – at San Francisco’s legendary Fillmore West venue. Between the three nights, Franklin adorned the audience with powerhouse performances of Otis Redding’s “Respect,” Bread’s “Make It With You,” and the Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby,” earning the record a #1 and #7 spots on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and 200 charts.

Legendary fusion drummer Billy Cobham stepped onto the scene with his groundbreaking efforts with Miles Davis and the Mahavishnu Orchestra before breaking into his solo career with Spectrum. The staple Jazz Fusion album was recorded at the infamous Electric Lady Studio, where tracks like “Stratus,” “Red Baron,” and “Le Lis” were crafted in one to two takes. Side artists include Tommy Bolin and John Tropea on guitar, Jan Hammer on keyboard, and Lee Skylar on bass.

Roots is regarded as one of Curtis Mayfield’s best works and an undeniable 1970s classic. Charting at #6 on Billboard’s Top Soul Albums chart, the album features hit tracks “We Got to Have Peace,” “Keep on Keeping On,” and “Get Down.”

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees The Spinners released their sixth studio album, Pick Of The Litter, the last to be produced by Philadelphia soul architect Thom Bell. The quintet’s album reached #2 on the Billboard Top Soul Albums, and the signature song, “Games People Play,” featured in Grand Theft Auto IV.]

Kicking off in June, the 38-date headline run will bring the globally beloved band’s powerhouse live show to major venues across North America. As part of the tour’s stacked lineup, Guster and Sugar Ray are also joining as direct support in June and July respectively, and all dates will feature Alt-Rock heavy-hitters Fastball.

The public on-sale for the Last Summer On Earth 2025 Tour will begin this Friday, February 14 at 10 am local time — go here and see below for the full tour itinerary. VIP Silver packages for Barenaked Ladies will be available which include premium seats and merch packages. The Gold packages will also include pre-show soundcheck parties, a meet-and-greet and a photo opportunity with the band.

Barenaked Bytes, the official Barenaked Ladies app just relaunched their premium membership program. Fans who purchase the ‘GygaBytes’ membership will have first access to tickets and VIP packages on Tuesday, February 11 at 10 am local. There is also a ‘MegaBytes’ option, which is complimentary, and those tickets and VIP packages are available on Wednesday, February 12 at 10 am local time.

“This is going to be a fantastic last summer on earth,” says Ed Robertson of Barenaked Ladies. “A great night, chock-full of hits! We’ve got our old pals Guster out with us once again, the amazing Sugar Ray joining mid-summer, and our good friends Fastball on the whole tour. If we’re not coming to a city near you, then you should be coming to a city near us!”

Beginning on June 3 at Atlanta’s Cadence Bank Amphitheatre at Chastain Park, the eighth edition of the Last Summer On Earth 2025 Tour will include stops at famed venues like Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado, the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles, The Rooftop at Pier 17 in New York City, The Chicago Theater in Chicago and a hometown show at Budweiser Stage in Toronto, ON, and many more. With the tour finale taking place on August 2 at Pine Knob Music Theatre in Clarkston, MI, each show will find the eight-time JUNO winners tearing through a jam-packed setlist of all-time fan favorites and radio-dominating smash hits, including “One Week” which skyrocketed to #1 in the U.S., Top 20 singles like “Pinch Me,” and “If I Had $1,000,000,” and arguably one of their best known songs, “Big Bang Theory Theme.” The TV show is one of the top scripted comedy shows of all time and is still streamed in over 70 countries worldwide, more than a decade after its final episode aired.

Known for creating a near-magical connection with their audience, Barenaked Ladies founded the Last Summer On Earth Tour in 2012 — the same year the Mayan calendar predicted the end of the world. Thanks to their deep commitment to delivering an unforgettable live show, the two-time GRAMMY-nominated band have earned massive praise from the likes of Billboard (“Barenaked Ladies’ energy was contagious and set the stage for what would be a high-energy evening of sing-alongs and throwback hits”), Forbes (“[Barenaked Ladies are] known for a freestyle, go-where-the-music-takes-you approach in their live shows they tend to enjoy as much as the fans”), and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution (“The big hits still hit big”).

Barenaked Ladies is proud to continue to partner with REVERB for Last Summer On Earth 2025 to make the tour more sustainable. Since 2004, Barenaked Ladies has worked with REVERB to reduce the environmental impact of touring while also giving back to local communities across the U.S. and Canada.

With Alt-Rock mainstays Guster returning for the second time to the bill from June 3 to 28, and Pop hitmakers Sugar Ray as direct support from July 8 to August 2, and Fastball on all shows, the Last Summer On Earth 2025 Tour is sure to be a must-see from start to finish. Over the years, the Last Summer On Earth has previously included support from some of Barenaked Ladies’ most esteemed musical peers, including Cracker, Big Head Todd & the Monsters, Blues Traveler, Ben Folds Five, Violent Femmes, Colin Hay, OMD, Howard Jones, Better Than Ezra, KT Tunstall, Semisonic, Five for Fighting, and Del Amitri.

5 Surprising Facts About Sly and the Family Stone’s ‘Stand!’

Released in 1969, just months before their legendary Woodstock performance, Sly and the Family Stone’s Stand! fused funk, soul, and rock in a way that had never been done before. It was socially conscious, musically innovative, and packed with songs that became instant classics.

From “Everyday People” to “I Want to Take You Higher,” Stand! isn’t just an album—it’s a revolution set to music. But even with its Grammy Hall of Fame status and Library of Congress recognition, there are still some untold stories about this legendary record.

1. The Album Almost Didn’t Happen

Before Stand! became a smash hit, Sly and the Family Stone were struggling. Their previous album, Life, failed to break the Billboard 200’s Top 100, and the band was on shaky ground commercially. Epic Records wasn’t sure if they should keep investing in a group that had yet to prove themselves beyond their hit “Dance to the Music.”

But Stand! changed everything. It catapulted the band into the mainstream, selling 500,000 copies in its first year and eventually going triple Platinum. If this album hadn’t taken off, we might never have gotten the full brilliance of Sly and the Family Stone.

2. “Everyday People” Popularized a Famous Catchphrase

Before Stand!, people weren’t using the phrase “different strokes for different folks” in everyday conversation. But after the release of “Everyday People,” the phrase became a pop culture staple, capturing the song’s message of unity and acceptance.

The song was a massive hit, spending four weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Decades later, it even inspired the title of the classic 1978 sitcom Diff’rent Strokes. The song’s legacy didn’t stop there—hip-hop group Arrested Development reimagined it in 1992 with their hit “People Everyday,” proving that Sly’s message of inclusivity is truly timeless.

3. “I Want to Take You Higher” Was Originally a Different Song

Before becoming one of Sly and the Family Stone’s most electrifying anthems, “I Want to Take You Higher” existed in an early form called “Higher.” It was originally recorded for the band’s 1968 Dance to the Music album, but the song didn’t have the same energy that it would later take on.

When the band revamped it for Stand!, they added a heavy dose of funk, more layered vocals, and a driving groove that turned it into a must-play at every party and festival. Their live performance of the song at Woodstock—where Sly had the crowd chanting “higher!” at 3 a.m.—is now the stuff of legend.

4. The Band Laughed Their Way Through “Sex Machine”

“Sex Machine” isn’t just a 13-minute funk jam—it’s a snapshot of the band’s raw energy and creative spontaneity. The song was recorded in one long take, with each band member getting a solo. The highlight? Drummer Gregg Errico’s explosive solo at the end.

If you listen closely, you’ll hear something unexpected: laughter. As the track wraps up, the band can be heard cracking up in the background. It’s proof that even in the midst of their rise to stardom, Sly and the Family Stone never lost their sense of joy and playfulness in the studio.

5. “Stand!” Had to Be Reworked After a Lukewarm Club Reaction 🎵📢

When Sly first played an early acetate of “Stand!” at a San Francisco nightclub, the response was… underwhelming. The song was missing something. Instead of scrapping it, Sly went back to the studio and added the now-famous gospel-inspired outro.

That last-minute decision turned the track into a classic. The extended outro, recorded with session musicians because most of the band wasn’t available, became one of the most beloved parts of the song. Even Gregg Errico later admitted that people often asked why the entire song wasn’t built around that gospel section!

With its powerful social messages, boundary-pushing musicianship, and undeniable grooves, it helped redefine what funk and soul could be. From the anthemic call to action in “Stand!” to the joyous unity of “Everyday People,” every song on the album still hits hard today.

5 Surprising Facts About The Eagles’ ‘Hotel California’

The Eagles’ Hotel California is so deeply embedded in rock history that its opening chords are instantly recognizable. From its Grammy-winning title track to its eerie themes of excess and disillusionment, this 1976 classic has remained a staple in the cultural zeitgeist. But even with its 26× Platinum certification and millions of copies sold worldwide, there are still some surprising stories lurking behind the neon glow of that iconic album cover.

Whether you’re a lifelong Eagles fan or just discovering their timeless sound, here are five fascinating facts about Hotel California that you probably didn’t know.

1. Black Sabbath Almost Ruined the Recording Process

When the Eagles were recording Hotel California at Criteria Studios in Miami, they weren’t alone—next door, the mighty Black Sabbath was busy laying down tracks for their Technical Ecstasy album. The problem? Sabbath was so loud that their earth-shaking riffs kept bleeding through the studio walls, forcing the Eagles to pause recording multiple times.

The disruption was particularly bad for “The Last Resort,” which had to be re-recorded several times due to the heavy metal chaos next door. One can only imagine the contrast: the Eagles crafting their polished harmonies while Tony Iommi and company were summoning the sound of the apocalypse.

2. The Title Track Was Spliced Together from 33 Different Takes

“Hotel California” might sound like a seamless, live performance, but in reality, it’s a Frankenstein’s monster of studio wizardry. After laying down multiple full takes of the song, producer Bill Szymczyk and the band meticulously spliced together the best parts from 33 different edits on the two-inch master tape.

The most iconic part of the song—Joe Walsh and Don Felder’s legendary guitar solo—was also pieced together from different improvisations, requiring three days of painstaking work to get it just right. The result? One of the most celebrated guitar duels in rock history, later voted the best guitar solo of all time by Guitarist magazine in 1998.

3. The Cover Image Almost Led to a Lawsuit

The now-iconic Hotel California album cover was photographed at the Beverly Hills Hotel just before sunset, giving it that warm, golden glow. However, the hotel wasn’t thrilled about being associated with the Eagles’ dark, cautionary tale of hedonism and excess.

When the album became a massive success, the Beverly Hills Hotel threatened legal action against the band for using its image without permission. Fortunately, no lawsuit ever materialized, but it’s safe to say they weren’t too pleased about being forever linked to rock music’s most mysterious metaphorical hotel.

4. “Life in the Fast Lane” Was Inspired by a Drug Dealer’s Reckless Driving

Glenn Frey came up with the phrase “life in the fast lane” during a wild car ride with a drug dealer known as The Count. While speeding down an L.A. freeway, Frey, alarmed by the breakneck pace, told The Count to slow down. His response? “What do you mean? It’s life in the fast lane!”

The phrase stuck in Frey’s head, and when Joe Walsh casually played an electrifying riff during rehearsals, the pieces clicked together. Henley and Frey wrote the lyrics to match the riff’s high-speed energy, resulting in one of the band’s most adrenaline-fueled anthems.

5. The Song “New Kid in Town” Is a Metaphor for Fading Fame

On the surface, “New Kid in Town” sounds like a song about romantic jealousy, but it carries a deeper meaning. The Eagles were at the peak of their success in the mid-’70s, but they were already aware that fame is fleeting. Don Henley later revealed that the song was actually about the anxiety of being replaced—whether by a younger artist in the music industry or by someone new in a lover’s life.

With lines like “They will never forget you ‘til somebody new comes along,” the song encapsulates the inevitable rise and fall of rock stars. Ironically, despite its melancholy message, “New Kid in Town” shot to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, proving that the Eagles still had plenty of time at the top.
