New Article by Columbia Professors Explores the Legacy of Sonic Pioneer Steve Albini and Electrical Audio

0

The International Journal of Arts Management has published a compelling new study “Legacy of a Sonic Maverick: Steve Albini and Electrical Audio” authored by Philippe Ravanas and Justin Sinkovich, both professors in the School of Business and Entrepreneurship at Columbia College Chicago. Theis article is provides an in-depth exploration of legendary producer and sound engineer Steve Albini’s entrepreneurial approach, his business model for Electrical Audio, and his impact on the music industry.

Albini, who passed away suddenly on May 7, 2024, at the age of sixty-one, was a towering figure in independent music. Renowned for his raw, analog sound and principled stance against exploitative industry practices, he engineered groundbreaking albums for artists such as Nirvana, Pixies, PJ Harvey, and The Jesus Lizard. However, beyond his technical expertise, Albini was a visionary entrepreneur who built Electrical Audio into a haven for musicians seeking artistic integrity and transparency in production.

Ravanas and Sinkovich had the rare opportunity to interview Albini just weeks before his passing. Their article delves into his distinctive philosophy on business and music, examining how Electrical Audio was structured to serve artists rather than corporate interests. It also raises critical questions about the studio’s future in the absence of its charismatic founder.

“Albini redefined what it meant to be both an artist and an entrepreneur,” said Ravanas and Sinkovich. “His principles of fairness, efficiency, and artistic autonomy set a precedent that continues to influence independent music worldwide.”

The publication is a must-read for music industry professionals, scholars, and fans of independent music. It provides new insights into Albini’s enduring legacy and the challenges ahead for Electrical Audio.

Kip Moore Drops Expansive ‘Solitary Tracks’ Album, Announces World Tour

0

Kip Moore released today his anticipated sixth studio album Solitary Tracks, available everywhere through Virgin Music Group. His biggest and most ambitious record to date, Solitary Tracks features 23 songs split over four sides, a resonant opus from beginning to end, and a testament to Moore’s wanderlust drive to pave his own path and explore new horizons.

Moore also shared the official video for the album’s title track “Solitary Tracks.” A stirring vignette that follows an aspiring singer as she discovers her voice and emerges into the spotlight, “Solitary Tracks” embodies the song’s exploration of a born-outsider’s drive that rises into a cathartic roots-rock anthem.

“There’s no pattern you have to follow, and sometimes you gotta gamble on yourself,” stated Moore. “You gotta be bold enough to trust your gut, and willing to roll those dice if you believe something. I’m never going to cheat by just trying to write what I think people want to hear, or hold onto a sound that worked for me. I have to constantly stretch and go where I need to go, or it’s going to be disingenuous. I’m going to always be authentic with myself, with every record, and all I ever hope is that people find a little solace. This project is a journey in itself, so I hope it helps people navigate their own life.”

Additional highlights from Solitary Tracks include the “swaggering” (Billboard) “Bad Spot,” The Clash and The Ramones inspired “Around You,” the “powerful guitar-driven anthem” (Country Now) “Live Here to Work,” the “gritty, rough, and rowdy” (Whiskey Riff) “Learning As I Go,” as well as the “heartfelt anthem” (All Country News) “Flowers in December” and the slow-burning track “Wildfire.”

There are many paths to follow in an artistic career, but for Kip Moore, the choice has always been a clear “forward,” even if he has to go it alone. With Solitary Tracks, his internal compass is stronger than ever. Harboring an established reputation as a soulful troubadour with solid country roots and a global platform, Kip has emerged as one of only a few country artists who’s international footprint is just as deep as his stateside base, built by years of slow, painstaking effort and tireless touring, with fans latching on to a creative force of nature who’ll never sell his soul. And now, Solitary Tracks takes them deeper into the creative wild.

Embracing his lifelong drive to break new ground, Solitary Tracks is like nothing Moore has ever done. It’s an album of intensity on all levels – vocally, lyrically, and sonically – as Moore focuses his incisive pen inward. Co-produced by Moore with Jaren Johnston and additional production by Oscar Charles and Jay Joyce, its first half marks a deep-feeling acknowledgement of his solitary place, while its second part is the start of a new phase. Taken together, they wrap a defiant sense of personal growth in a raw, roots-and-soul package. Freed up by a new, globally minded label partner in Virgin Music Group, Kip is once again in a position to trust his gut.

This spring, Moore will kick off his Solitary Tracks World Tour, which will take him across Canada, Europe, and the UK. It’ll be followed by a run of US tour dates over the summer with Billy Currington.

The Dead Daisies Reimagine Blues Classic “Crossroads,” Announce ‘Lookin’ For Trouble’ Album

1

The Dead Daisies are stepping into blues history with the release of “Crossroads,” the first single from their upcoming album Lookin’ For Trouble, out May 30th via Fame / Malaco Records. The song, immortalized by Delta blues pioneer Robert Johnson, has been reimagined with the band’s signature firepower, delivering a high-energy, soul-drenched performance that bridges past and present.

Few songs in American music carry as much myth and mystique as “Crossroads.” Johnson’s 1936 original-recorded in a single take-gave rise to one of blues’ most enduring legends: that he met the devil at a Mississippi crossroads and exchanged his soul for unearthly guitar prowess. Whether fact or folklore, “Crossroads” became the foundation of modern blues, later electrified by Cream in 1968 and inspiring generations of musicians. Now, The Dead Daisies put their own stamp on the song, channeling its raw emotion with blistering guitars, driving rhythms, and an impassioned vocal performance.

“When I first heard Blues it was through the music of bands like Led Zeppelin and The Rolling Stones,” says vocalist John Corabi. “The deeper I researched the music of my heroes the deeper I got into the history or origins. The Blues in my opinion has influenced EVERY genre of music we listen to, with the exception of classical. I would refer to it as ‘The Soul’ of music and I hope you love our interpretations of these songs as much as we loved playing them.”

“‘Crossroads,’ by Delta bluesman Robert Johnson has created a myth so large that it’s been etched into the very foundation of rock n roll lore,” adds bassist Michael Devin. “They say Johnson gave up his soul in exchange for his musical genius. Many bands have covered ‘Crossroads’ over the years, now we’ve covered it in our own way.”

Lookin’ For Trouble, The Dead Daisies’ first full-length blues album, is both a tribute to the genre’s pioneers and a bold new chapter for the band. The album reimagines classic blues songs with the band’s signature firepower, and was born in March 2024 during sessions for their upcoming rock album, Light ‘Em Up. After recording at Sienna Studios in Nashville, the band moved to Muscle Shoals, Alabama, to complete the album at the iconic FAME Studios.

Stepping into the same space where legends like Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, and Etta James recorded their classic hits, the band-John Corabi (Mötley Crüe, The Scream), David Lowy (Red Phoenix, Mink), Doug Aldrich (Whitesnake, Dio), Michael Devin (Whitesnake, Lynch Mob), and drummer Sarah Tomek (Steven Tyler Band, Samantha Fish)-found themselves drawn into the deep musical legacy of the blues. After their rock sessions wrapped each night, they started jamming on blues classics for fun. But producer Marti Frederiksen quickly recognized the magic happening and pressed record.

What started as impromptu late-night sessions evolved into Lookin’ For Trouble, an album that crackles with the raw energy and rebellious spirit that made blues the foundation of rock ‘n’ roll.

“The blues had many names back in the day, and they all had unwarranted negative connotations,” says Corabi. The title Lookin’ For Trouble nods to this history-an era when blues was called ‘the Devil’s Music,’ feared for its themes of rebellion, hardship, and sensuality.

For over a decade, The Dead Daisies have been captivating audiences with their no-holds-barred rock sound, channeling the grit and soul of classic ’70s rock into modern anthems. With seven studio albums, a live album, a covers album, and a Best Of collection under their belt, the band has shared stages with rock royalty including Kiss, Guns N’ Roses, Scorpions, Aerosmith, Def Leppard, and many more.

With Lookin’ For Trouble set for release on May 30th via Fame / Malaco Records, the band is keeping the momentum rolling. Their Light ‘Em Up tour, which has already brought their high-voltage rock show to audiences across the US, UK, and Europe, continues into 2024, and they’ll be hitting the road again in 2025 for a UK and European tour that will showcase both their signature rock anthems and their new blues-driven sound.

Spin Doctors Release “Rock ‘N’ Roll Heaven” And Announce Tour with Blues Traveler & Gin Blossoms

0

’90s alt-rock icons the Spin Doctors released “Rock ‘N’ Roll Heaven,” the second single from their upcoming LP Face Full of Cake, out April 11 via Capitol Records. Born of vocalist Chris Barron’s musings on a rock and roll afterlife, the song imagines Heaven as a place in the sky where the beer stays cold, the mics are new, the guitars are old and amps go up to eleven.

Earlier this month, the band announced a 2025 summer tour with Blues Traveler and Gin Blossoms, which kicks off July 4 at Red Rocks Amphitheatre. This year, they’ll also host a special album release show at New York’s Brooklyn Bowl on April 12, play a four-night residency at Park City’s Egyptian Theatre in June and make appearances at major festivals like Boston Calling, Bourbon & Beyond and Oceans Calling.

“‘Rock ‘N’ Roll Heaven’ is a hymn to an afterlife for the blue collar musician and diehard music fan alike,” says Chris Barron. “It was the first song recorded in the Face Full Of Cake session, and it set the tone for the anthemic sound of this new Spin Doctors era.”

The band previously released the album’s first single “Still A Gorilla”, which showcased a noisier, heavier sound and garnered praise from Rolling Stone, Relix, Ultimate Classic Rock and more. The upcoming LP marks their debut on Capitol Records and the first Spin Doctors record with new bassist Jack Daley who joined the band full-time in 2021, rounding out the four-piece including Barron, guitarist Eric Schenkman and drummer Aaron Comess. Recorded at Daley’s Asbury Park, NJ studio, the album has a rollicking, good-time energy that came from a high moral, low-pressure recording process. It features a combination of the easy-going hook-forward songs and freewheeling jam sensibilities they’ve always exhibited with bluesy funk flavor and straightforward rock’n’roll.

“Spin Doctors fans are going to be knocked out by this new record,” shares Barron. “It’s got that vintage Spin Doctors sound of ear candy and denser material that harkens back to Pocket Full Of Kryptonite but with years of experience under our belts.”

Formed in 1988 in New York City, Spin Doctors’ full-length 1991 debut Pocket Full of Kryptonite sold over ten million copies across the world and spawned two massive singles: “Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong,” which reached number two on the Billboard Album Rock Tracks chart, and the now ubiquitous Billboard Hot 100 Top Ten hit “Two Princes,” which was the No. 1 Rock radio hit of 1993 and was nominated for Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group at the GRAMMYs. They’ve appeared on SNL, played major festivals like Glastonbury and opened for The Rolling Stones. And after three decades and nearly two thousand shows, Spin Doctors remain as committed as ever.

THE FUNERAL PORTRAIT’s Deluxe Edition Of ‘Greetings From Suffocate City’ Due June 13 Featuring New Version Of “Holy Water” With Guest Vocals By Ivan Moody Of Five Finger Death Punch

1

Emo rock revivalists THE FUNERAL PORTRAIT—Lee Jennings (Vocals), Cody Weissinger (Guitar), Caleb Freihaut (Guitar/Auxiliary), Robert Weston (Bass), and Homer Umbanhowar (Drums)—will release a deluxe edition of their critically acclaimed second album, GREETINGS FROM SUFFOCATE CITY, on June 13 via Better Noise Music.

Ahead of the album’s release, they’ve today (February 28) unveiled an instant grat track with pre-orders of a new version of “Holy Water.” It now features guest vocals by Ivan Moody of Five Finger Death Punch, with whom THE FUNERAL PORTRAIT toured in 2024.  Moody’s powerful and distinctively rugged vocals bring an exciting new element to the track. Listen to the song HERE, which has been making a huge impact at radio in its first week and debuting on Billboard’s “Mainstream Rock Tracks” chart at #21, while a video for the song will be released Friday, March 28.

Pre-orders for the digital, CD and vinyl copies of the deluxe edition of GREETINGS FROM SUFFOCATE CITY are available today here. The digital deluxe collection will include 24 songs, including “Holy Water” feat. Ivan Moody, songs from the CASSANOVA EP and the FROM BEYOND THE ABYSS EP, as well as the recently released version of “Hearse for Two” feat. Lilith Czar and three brand new songs, “Skinny Lies,” “Evergreen,” and “Lost Boy.” The vinyl and CD two-disc deluxe packages feature 21 tracks, one of which is exclusive to the physical formats (“Friends Like These”).

“‘Holy Water’ has always been one of the most personal and cathartic songs I’ve ever written,” explains THE FUNERAL PORTRAIT’s Lee Jennings. “It’s about confronting your darkest moments and finding the strength to cleanse yourself of the weight they carry. Seeing the connection its made with fans, especially during our live shows, has been beyond powerful—watching the crowd scream the lyrics back at us is proof that music really can heal. Having Ivan Moody join us on this track took it to another level. His energy, passion, and personal story made him the perfect voice to help tell this chapter, and we couldn’t be more honored to have him be part of it.”

“Before our tour together, I wasn’t too familiar with The Funeral Portrait’s music, so I didn’t know what to expect,” says Ivan Moody. “But after watching them night after night, seeing how they commanded the stage and connected with the crowd, I was absolutely hooked. The passion, intensity, and raw emotion they bring to their performances make them one of the most exciting new bands out there. And Lee’s voice? Absolutely incredible—one of my favorite new singers! We had talked about collaborating before the tour, but the timing never worked out. Then, while speeding down the highway, I heard ‘Holy Water’ on the radio and couldn’t help but sing along. What an amazing track! It immediately brought back the idea of working together, so I hit up Lee about the possibility of me redoing the song with them. Luckily, he was all in—and here we are….The rest is history.”

“Holy Water” was described by MetalPlanetMusic.com in a September 8, 2024 review as “a full-on arena anthem sound that hits straight between the ears. The beat is hard and uncompromising, with the dual guitar riffs forcing the emotion down your throat. The choral harmony during the bridge gives the track a ‘it’s our song, and we’re going to do what the fuck we want to’ vibe. It’s a real monster of a track.”

GREETINGS FROM SUFFOCATE CITY, released September 13, 2024 via Better Noise Music, consists of 14 tracks of theatrical, dramatic, unapologetic, full-throated flair with guest appearances from Bert McCracken of The Used, Spencer Charnas of Ice Nine Kills, Danny Worsnop of Asking Alexandria, and Amanda Lyberg of Eva Under Fire. Get a copy of GREETINGS FROM SUFFOCATE CITY on CD or digital download now at https://thefuneralportrait.ffm.to/gfsc.

Last November THE FUNERAL PORTRAIT landed the #1 spot on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Airplay and Mediabase’s Active Rock radio charts with their hit single “Suffocate City (feat. Spencer Charnas of Ice Nine Kills).” This marks the band’s first-ever #1 radio single and first entry onto any Billboard chart. The single has garnered over 6.5 million streams globally and over 600k views for its prom-themed music video.

Meanwhile, Pandora named THE FUNERAL PORTRAIT as one of their “Artists to Watch 2025: The Pandora Ten,” which spotlights a group of ten emerging artists across all genres that it believes will break through in the coming year.

In touring news, THE FUNERAL PORTRAIT has been bringing their message to the masses with an aggressive touring plan that continues throughout 2025. The band is on the road now throughout the U.S. and Canada with Catch Your Breath & Archers. SEBASTIAN BACH Kicks Off 2025 With New Video For “To Live Again!”; First-Ever Art Show and Two Festival Performances Confirmed for this Summer

0

SEBASTIAN BACH is releasing yet another video from his CHILD WITHIN tHE MAN album (Reigning Phoenix Music). The new video for “To Live Again” marks the seventh from the album and is another collaboration between BACH and Jim Louvau and Tony Aguilera.

“‘To Live Again’ is the closest song to a ballad on the record. It was co-written with the super talented Myles Kennedy, who also co-wrote the song ‘What Do I Got to Lose?’ the first single off this record,” SEBASTIAN says. “I could not be more proud of this song and this video. This song is the sound of my voice being pushed as far and as hard as it will go, in every way–power, range and emotion. If you have enjoyed the ballads that I have been releasing since the year 1989, I really do think you will enjoy this song and video.”

“We have been working on this video for months and months and it was finally completed in January 2025. Without a doubt, this is the most time, effort and pathos that I have ever put into creating a rock video. This video is like a fantasy dream that has been going through my head for the last year. The directors Jim Louvau and Tony Aguilera have made recurring dreams that I have had at night come to life in this beautifully shot video.”

This year will see SEBASTIAN expand his horizons with his first-ever art show. In collaboration with Wentworth Gallery, BACH will be making a special in-person appearance on the Monsters of Rock Cruise (March 10-15) showcasing stunning works inspired by his late father, the renowned artist David Bierk. On the live front, look for a May headlining performance at M3 Rock Festival followed by a slot at Summerfest.

2024 was a remarkable year for the singer, songwriter, author, Broadway star, and actor.  BACH’s CHILD WITHIN tHE MAN album–his first in more than 10 years—was well-received, with Associated Press saying “…it shows a fierce performer in prime fighting form…his vocals remain sharp and his songwriting talents as cunning as ever,” while Ultimate Classic Rock noted: “Bach’s voice has lost none of its rage or range, even in the highest registers…” In addition, the album’s “(Hold On) To the Dream” track was included in Consequence‘s 30 Best Metal & Hard Rock Songs of 2024 which described the song as “…a late-career masterpiece from the former Skid Row singer. Baz hits some of the highest notes of his career on the sweeping ballad, an inspiring anthem about perseverance.”

“I would like to thank all of the rockers who put Child Within the Man at the top of so many fans Top Album lists of 2024,” BACH continues. “This will be the last full video that we will shoot for a while. There is one more video surprise coming later this year from the record, but this will be the last full concept video from the album…for now anyways. I cannot thank you all enough for the support on this project which has consumed my life for over a decade now. For those devastated by the California Wildfires and the courageous first responders, the song ‘To Live Again’ carries the sentiment that even if you lose everything you have, if you still have your family, that is the most important thing. Make art at all costs. That’s what we do. The show must go on. There is no other option.”

On the touring front, SEBASTIAN performed a record 91 shows in 2024. The dates included two successful North American tours–one around the release of the album, followed by another leg of fall shows–and a series of overseas appearances just before the album’s release.

Last month, SEBASTIAN was back on TV when he appeared on Food Network’s “Worst Cooks in America Celebrity Edition: Heroes vs. Villains.” In addition, last June SEBASTIAN was the subject of an A&E Biography: Rock Legends Special. This follows his 2023 appearance as “Tiki” on Fox’s “The Masked Singer.

“To Live Again,” is the latest release from his CHILD WITHIN tHE MAN album which has yielded the following singles/videos, all of which have impacted the rock charts: “Freedom,” “What Do I Got To Lose?,” “Everybody Bleeds,” and “(Hold On) To The Dream” (along with the “(Hold On) To The Dream” alternate video) and “Future of Youth.”

CHILD WITHIN tHE MAN was recorded in Orlando, Florida; produced and mixed by Elvis Baskette; engineered by Jef Moll, assistant engineered by Josh Saldate; and mastered by Robert Ludwig/Gateway Mastering. BACH wrote or co-wrote all the album’s 11 tracks and sang all lead and backing vocals. CHILD WITHIN tHE MAN features guest appearances from John 5, Steve Stevens, and Orianthi—who all co-wrote their respective tracks with BACH—and two tracks co-written with Myles Kennedy (“What Do I Got to Lose?” and “To Live Again’); Devin Bronson on guitars, Todd Kerns (bass) and Jeremy Coulson (drums) round out the players on the album.

With an inimitable presence as loud as his instantly identifiable voice, SEBASTIAN BACH has left a San Andreas Fault-size imprint on music, theater, film, television, and culture. Moreover, his influence only continues to magnify. He has penned and voiced some of the most iconic anthems in rock history, crafting a catalog highlighted by generational hits such as “18 and Life,” “I Remember You,” “Youth Gone Wild,” “Slave To The Grind,” “Wasted Time,” and “Monkey Business,” to name a few. He has made history as “the first heavy metal singer on Broadway” with a now legendary turn in Jekyll & Hyde: The Musical in addition to leading roles in The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Jesus Christ Superstar. He has appeared in dozens of television series and films, ranging from “Trailer Park Boys” and “Robot Chicken” to “Spongebob Squarepants,” “The Masked Singer,” and “Hell’s Kitchen.” Speaking to his versatility, he’s the rare force of nature who can duet with Axl Rose and reprise a seven-season recurring role on “Gilmore Girls.”
