David Tennant Kicks Off the EE BAFTA Film Awards 2025 with a Kilt and a Proclaimers Classic

0

David Tennant may have just redefined the art of the awards show opening. Kilt-clad and brimming with Scottish pride, the actor launched the EE BAFTA Film Awards 2025 with a raucous, audience-led rendition of I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) by The Proclaimers. Delivered in a thick Scottish brogue, the performance was both an homage to his roots and a masterclass in how to command a room. With the energy of a pub singalong and the presence of a Shakespearean lead, Tennant reminded us that showmanship isn’t just about spectacle—it’s about bringing people together.

Amy Irving Unveils “I Wish I Didn’t Love You So” Featuring Steve Earle Ahead of ‘Always Will Be’ Album

0

Today, Academy Award-nominated actress Amy Irving has shared her new single “I Wish I Didn’t Love You So” featuring Steve Earle, the latest offering from her forthcoming album Always Will Be, out April 25 via Queen Of The Castle Records/Missing Piece Records. Originally written by Tony Award-winning songwriter Frank Loesser and popularized further by Willie Nelson, “I Wish I Didn’t Love You So” finds Irving and Earle exchanging confessional verses about a lover’s lament over a sauntering, jazzy arrangement. The new track is one of many renditions from her longtime friend Nelson’s iconic catalog that comprises Always Will Be, with additional special guests including Amy Helm, Louis Cato, Chris Pierce, Lizzie No and Nelson himself.

“I Wish I Didn’t Love You So” arrives on the heels of Irving’s critically acclaimed film Crossing Delancey being added to the Criterion Collection earlier this month. She recently spoke with Vulture about “the New York rom-com classic” and this prestigious honor.

“Two of the songs on my new album, which is a celebration of Willie Nelson’s music, were not written by him,” says Irving. “He sang wonderful renditions of ‘I Wish I Didn’t Love You So’ and ‘I’d Have to Be Crazy’ in the past, and he suggested them for me. ‘I Wish…’ was written by Frank Loesser in 1947 for the Paramount movie The Perils of Pauline, and the amazing Steve Earle joins me for this duet. One of my very favorite albums in the world is the soundtrack to the movie One From the Heart with Tom Waits singing his songs in his deep, gravelly voice along with the more pure sounds of Crystal Gayle. I feel like we are in the same lane with this new recording.”

“I Wish I Didn’t Love You So” follows the bittersweet “Always Will Be” (feat. Amy Helm), a tribute to Irving’s late best friend Judy Nelson that has garnered praise from Variety, Holler, The Bluegrass Situation and more. The origin of Always Will Be begins with Irving and Nelson’s decades-long friendship, which spans back to meeting while shooting the 1980 film Honeysuckle Rose. After dueting on a reimagining of his song “I’m Waiting Forever,” Nelson proposed that Irving record an album entirely of his work. She took him up on the offer, collaborating again with bandleader Goolis (Jules David Bartkowski) for these 10 genre-defying tracks.

Over Irving’s prolific career, she has been heralded as a “revelation” by Time, while Variety dubbed her “a gifted stage actress of uncompromising integrity.” She first came to prominence with early screen roles in Brian DePalma’s Carrie and The Fury. Nominated for an Academy Award for her performance in Yentl, Irving has captivated audiences with beloved starring roles in films like Crossing Delancey, The Competition and Micki and Maude.

Now in this latest chapter, Irving has created an arresting body of work that couples her gift for dynamic storytelling with her talent for bringing unexpected and inspiring interpretations to the works of others. Shifting into music, the playground may look slightly different, but the creative impulse and deep dedication to craft remain.

Irving will be performing album release shows at New York City’s City Winery on May 4 and Levon Helm Studios in Woodstock, NY on May 31. For more information and tickets, visit amyirvingmusic.com.

SweetWater 420 Fest Celebrates 20 Years with Bold Sustainability Initiatives

0

SweetWater Brewing Company, the largest craft brewer in Atlanta and the Southeast and a subsidiary of Tilray Brands, Inc. is setting a new standard for music festival sustainability with an innovative lineup of eco-friendly initiatives for its 20th-anniversary 420 Fest.

The highly anticipated three-day event, taking place April 18-20 at Atlanta’s Historic Pullman Yards, is held annually around Earth Day to celebrate the planet through music, local brews, and a strong emphasis on reducing environmental impact.

SweetWater will once again donate $10 from every ticket sold to the Waterkeeper Alliance, a nonprofit that protects local waterways. Tickets are available now.

SweetWater 420 Fest is also partnering with Greenway Festival Management Group, which aims to make Atlanta’s outdoor festivals more sustainable, on the following activations:

Habitat for Humanity’s “Million Can Program”: Repurposing 150,000 recycled cans from the festival to help fund the construction of a new home built to green standards.

CompostNow Partnership: Requiring vendors to adhere to composting and recycling practices, transforming all food waste into usable garden soil.

Energy Offset: Offsetting 100% of sound and lighting energy consumption with green energy credits.

Green Transportation: Promoting walkability, public transit options, and bike ridership, including the addition of an e-bike charging station and a 500-1,000 bike valet area.

The Planet 420 Program: Educating and inspiring attendees through partnerships with nonprofits like Waterkeeper Alliance, support for local green entrepreneurs, an educational space, composting and recycling job opportunities, and demonstrations of eco-friendly technologies and products.

In the lead-up to the festival, SweetWater and Greenway Festival Management Group will continue to announce additional sustainability activations.

“As we celebrate two decades of music, beer, and culture, SweetWater 420 Fest is staying true to its roots by recommitting to our core values – including sustainability,” said Ty Gilmore, President of Tilray Beverages, North America. “This year’s festival takes our commitment to the next level with initiatives that not only reduce our environmental impact but also inspire our community to embrace greener practices. SweetWater is here for a good time, and we want Mother Earth to be here for a long time.”

By incorporating sustainable practices into every facet of the festival, SweetWater 420 Fest aims to be a model for other large-scale events, leaving a smaller ecological footprint while educating and engaging attendees.

“We’re thrilled to partner on events with environmentally conscious companies like SweetWater Brewing, who really ‘walk the walk,’” said Walter Brown, Co-Founder of Greenway Festival Management Group. “SweetWater 420 Fest’s ambitious goals of 100% composting, recycling, and energy offset showcase how festivals can lead the charge in sustainability and inspire the festival industry to prioritize alternative transportation and environmental responsibility while creating memorable experiences for attendees.”

Tickets for the 2025 SweetWater 420 Fest, along with additional festival details, are available now at SweetWater420Fest.com.

Maya de Vitry Expands Her Musical Universe with ‘The Only Moment’ and Spring Tour

0

Originally from Lancaster, PA, Maya de Vitry is a Nashville-based singer, songwriter, producer, and instrumentalist whose music blurs the lines of folk, alt-country, indie rock, and Americana. An admirer of the dedicated songcraft of writers like John Prine and Gillian Welch—and of the stirring vocals of artists like Bonnie Raitt and Nina Simone—Maya de Vitry’s music invites listeners into a space of openness and connection.

Her most recent solo release, The Only Moment [July 2024], is a strikingly gorgeous collection of songs that paint a beautiful sonic portrait of her emotional range and power as a vocalist. De Vitry has independently released four records and has nurtured a devoted community of listeners since she launched a solo career with her 2019 album Adaptations, after a formative chapter with roots-Americana trio The Stray Birds.

She has earned praise from Rolling Stone Country (“…de Vitry’s songwriting balances her intensely personal, microscopic style of storytelling with a straightforward, accessible delivery”), NPR Music (“the perfect soundtrack for uncorking that emotion and (defiantly) loving life again”), No Depression (“her songs shiver with an emotional immediacy that stirs our hearts”), and Glide Magazine (“her voice is among the most ethereal and pure in roots music”), among others.

When she is not collaborating live on stage, de Vitry thrives in the studio. Her songwriting appears on albums by Molly Tuttle, Lindsay Lou, and Steve Poltz, and her versatility as a multi-instrumentalist and harmony singer enriches numerous Nashville records.

Maya has also begun taking on another behind-the-scenes role in bringing music into the world, not only to produce her own album, The Only Moment, but also serving as a producer for others, including her guitarist Joel Timmons’ debut record, Psychedelic Surf Country. She says, “The performances are bursting with the humor and straight-talking and drinking-deeply-from-the-cup-of-life attitude that is Joel, and I’m so proud of what we made.”

She also produced the recent debut single, “Streets of Boulder (Feat. Molly Tuttle, Kyle Tuttle),” for singer and bassist Shelby Means. [Released Feb 14, 2025] “Shelby is an absolute force of nature in the bluegrass world,” says Maya of Means, who is a member of Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway, with whom she gained her first GRAMMY win. “Shelby is a deep feeler, and it really comes through in her singing—and the band is just epic!”

Maya’s expansive relationship with music seems to allow her to move joyfully between genres, especially in her collaborations. Exploring a fusion of electronic/ambient/folk music performed on clarinets and synth, her voice soars as a featured guest vocalist on a new emotive track “Over and Over.” The song will be released on March 5 as part of Chris Lippincott’s forthcoming full-length record and was co-written by Lippincott, de Vitry, and jazz musician David Williford.

Another collaborative track has taken on a life of its own. In his article entitled, “One Song In Many Voices – The Story Of ‘Nothing Else Matters,” WMOT Roots Radio’s Craig Havighurst declares, “it crossed a bridge into a wider world…” “Nothing Else Matters” was co-written by de Vitry and Phoebe Hunt. The song was released by Hunt as the title track of her 2023 album, is the opening cut on Lindsay Lou’s 2023 album Queen Of Time, and in 2024 on de Vitry’s The Only Moment. Other musical friends have continued to record their own versions of the song in a variety of formats, including Bonnie Sims [Big Richard], Nicki Bluhm with Mimi Naja [Fruition], Lauren Balthrop, and Hannah Seng.

Havighurst elaborates, “Here though is something rare, a contemporary song written by mid-career standouts of the roots music scene that’s being interpreted by others in real time, one of the highest compliments one can pay a song… Any songwriter would be gratified to write an American folk standard. Maybe Maya and Phoebe already have.”

Maya says of it all, “In the music industry—and society in general—it’s possible to feel that we are pitted against one another. But music seems to come from a much more boundary-less, universal place, and it just flows through all of us. As much as I can, I try to give and receive in a musical ecosystem where we are trusting each other, lifting each other up, and letting music flow between us. It gives me hope. It’s like weaving an interconnected web, instead of insisting on taking the journey alone on some straight and narrow path.”

“I’m not just making different music now. It feels like I’m breathing in a different atmosphere,” Maya says, reflecting on her evolution from the single-minded focus of The Stray Birds to her more fluid and generative musical present. Her sense of liberation is especially apparent in her live shows, which have become a space for spontaneity, peace, and freedom, often woven together with personal stories. “After the show, I just want to know if I’ve helped you to feel more free,” Maya continues. “That’s my quiet agreement—to myself, my bandmates, and everyone in the audience.”

With a magnetic voice and a hard-won sense of purpose, Maya has toured across North America and Europe, supporting artists like The Wood Brothers, Aoife O’Donovan, John Craigie, and Mighty Poplar.

Much like its larger sister festival, Telluride Bluegrass Festival, Planet Bluegrass’s RockyGrass is a homecoming for Festivarians far and wide. Not only do families and friends return year after year to dip their toes in the Saint Vrain River and enjoy the finest bluegrass and bluegrass-adjacent music the world has to offer, but world-class musicians also count the days until their return to the Planet Bluegrass Ranch to catch up and collaborate with friends on the legendary Colorado front range stage. They typically also dip their toes in the Saint Vrain River.

This year, over the weekend of July 25th-27th, RockyGrass returns to the ranch in Lyons, Colorado, just under an hour’s drive from the Denver International Airport. Nathaniel Rateliff and Gregory Alan Isakov Unveil “Flowers” Ahead of Madison Square Garden Show

0

Nathaniel Rateliff and longtime friend Gregory Alan Isakov today unveil a new song, “Flowers”—listen/share here. The pair will perform the duet on Jimmy Kimmel Live! tonight, marking Isakov’s late-night television debut. The song lands in advance of Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats’ landmark headline show at Madison Square Garden on March 27, part of their milestone first-ever arena tour, with Isakov to support—tickets are available now here.

Rateliff and Isakov have known each other since the early days of their careers, rising through the local Denver-Boulder area music scene together. The pair initially crafted “Flowers” as a demo around Rateliff’s 2020 solo album And It’s Still Alright; however, the song remained unfinished for five years before the two revisited it recently.

Rateliff shares, “In the moment, because so much time had passed, it was hard to remember who had written what – our words becoming each other’s. Now, listening back, I remember lines Gregory offered and others I did, but it truly is a work of us together, as one.”

Isakov reflects, “My longtime friend Nathaniel Rateliff brought some pieces of a song by the farm a little while back and we finished it and tracked it late that night. We ran around the studio tracking instruments and ideas thinking we might re-track it all later, but just loved how the first take came out. Hope you love it as much as we do.”

The track was mixed and mastered with help from Patrick Meese, Mark Anderson and David Wilton.

Around the band’s recent Los Angeles show at Kia Forum, Rateliff & The Night Sweats held an initiative to help raise wildfire recovery funds for the Los Angeles area alongside supporting acts Waxahatchee and Iron And Wine. The bands donated VIP passes, a meet and greet experience and a signed Gibson guitar to 3 winners, with proceeds from the fundraising efforts going to the Musicares Fire Relief Fund. Donations can still be made to the fund here.

In addition, Nathaniel Rateliff & The Night Sweats, in partnership with Greater Good Music and Dream Center LA, purchased a mobile food pantry for those who lost their homes to the Los Angeles fires—truckloads of food, water and pet supplies are available on the streets of the city, with those living in hotels and shelters able to drive or walk up to receive meals.

Greater Good Music partners with music artists to give mobile food pantries to people in disaster zones—recent partnerships include Ringo Star and Def Leppard for those affected by the Los Angeles fires and Green Day, who donated emergency food to those affected by the Maui fires. Greater Good is currently feeding 1,200 people in Los Angeles weekly.

The second leg of the band’s first arena tour also saw stops at Seattle’s Climate Pledge Arena, Connecticut’s Mohegan Sun, and a slew of performances in Canada, including at Toronto’s Scotiabank Arena, with two nights in Boston at MGM Music Hall at Fenway remaining. The first leg of the arena tour saw electric performances at Red Rocks, Chicago’s United Center, and St. Paul’s Excel Center. Pioneer Press praised Rateliff’s “twangy voice exploding out of guitars and keyboards and horns into roaring, soaring choruses”—see more critical acclaim for the tour and full routing below.

The tour caps off another highlight year for the band, which saw two #1s: “Heartless” and “Call Me (Whatever You Like)” from their critically acclaimed fourth full-length studio album, South of Here, both topped the Adult Alternative Chart, marking their 7th and 8th #1s to date. The album is out now via Stax—listen here. See the band perform “Heartless” on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert here and an excerpt from their special on the Howard Stern Show here.

Additionally, Rateliff has been appointed as Newport Folk Steward, the first artist to hold such a role at the legendary festival since Pete Seeger. The position holds a three-year term, which will see Rateliff serving as Steward actively for two years and advising the next recipient during a third transition year. Rateliff has chosen to devote his term to artist advocacy, fellowship and mentorship both at the Fort and beyond.

Billy Idol Announces Dream Into It with New Single “Still Dancing” and 2024 Tour

0

Rock legend Billy Idol is set for the release of his first full-length album of new music in over a decade. Dream Into It is out April 25 on Dark Horse Records and includes performance and co-writing contributions throughout from Idol’s longtime guitarist/collaborator Steve Stevens plus appearances by Avril Lavigne, Joan Jett and Alison Mosshart of The Kills. Dream Into It is produced by Tommy English; see below for a complete track list and album art, and pre-order the record HERE.

In anticipation of the forthcoming record, Idol is debuting the new single “Still Dancing” alongside a video directed by Steven Sebring.

“‘Still Dancing’ is really a reflection of my whole journey,” explains Idol. “From the punk rock period through to now. And I’m still looking towards the future, still living the life I set out to live.

“At the start of the song I’m recalling the early times in London, when I was living in squats or at friends’ apartments, all my belongings in a plastic bag. Everybody at home or work told you what you were doing was never going to happen. But punk rock gave me an opening. I was surrounded by people who loved the music as deeply as I did and you were going to throw caution to the wind, believe in what you were doing and grab on for dear life.

“As the song says, there have been many moments along the way where I’ve been self destructive. But what’s seen me through is that unflinching belief in the music that started all those years ago. That’s been the greatest gift of all.”

Alongside the upcoming album, Idol and Stevens were recently nominated for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame’s Class of 2025. Fan voting is open through April 21 HERE, with inductees to be announced at the end of April.

Additionally, Idol is returning to the road for It’s a Nice Day To…Tour Again! Fellow superstar Joan Jett & the Blackhearts will join Idol on all shows. Produced by Live Nation, the run of arenas and amphitheatres kicks off at the Talking Stick Resort Amphitheatre in Phoenix on April 30 and includes stops at an array of storied venues including New York’s Madison Square Garden, Los Angeles’ Kia Forum, the Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado, Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, MD and more. Tickets are available at billyidol.net/tour, see below for a complete list of dates. Five dollars from every ticket sold to the Los Angeles show at Kia Forum will be donated to the American Red Cross to support Southern California Wildfire Relief. Billly Idol will also personally match this donation.

Last year, Idol celebrated the 40th Anniversary of his landmark sophomore album Rebel Yell with a Deluxe Expanded Edition out now via Capitol/UMe. Idol also recently released the concert film Billy Idol: State Line, a Vertigo Live concert film documenting his April 2023 show at the famed Hoover Dam—the first-ever concert performed at the location. The film highlights the history and significance of the Hoover Dam and includes two unique sets of Billy Idol’s iconic hits: a full band concert at sunset with special guests that electrified and illuminated the surrounding Black Canyon, and an acoustic duo set on the roof of the powerhouse at the foot of Hoover Dam straddling the Colorado River, directly on the Nevada/Arizona state line.

For 46 years, Billy Idol has been one of the definitive faces and voices of rock’n’roll. Between 1977 and 1981, Idol released three albums with Generation X as their camera-ready frontman. In 1982, he embarked on a transatlantic/trans-genre solo career that integrated the bold and simple lines of punk and rock’n’roll decadence. With his longtime guitarist/collaborator Steve Stevens at his side, Idol has toured consistently around the world for the last ten years. Showing no signs of slowing down, Idol released both The Roadside EP in 2021 and The Cage EP in 2022 on Dark Horse Records, earning praise from fans and critics alike.

Zoe Ko Announces ‘not ur girlfriend’ EP with New Single “furr” and June Tour Dates

0

Rising Los Angeles-based artist Zoe Ko confirms her sophomore EP, not ur girlfriend, is set for release March 21. Pre-save/order EP HERE.

Today, she shares a further taste of the new music with “furr”. Listen/share HERE. Watch official video HERE.

“It perfectly encapsulates me and my relationship with clothing,” Ko details of the song. “Even though it’s silly and extra, it means a lot and came from a deep place.”

She continues, “No matter how sad, how self-hating I felt, if I threw on a fur coat and some sunglasses I felt invincible… ‘furr’ to me is about the mindset, the confidence, and self-love you can get from having a fire outfit on.”

“Furr” follows previously released songs “drop the man,” “lucky” and “Kiss My (Ah),” all featured on not ur girlfriend.

Ko will be joining Geordie Kieffer for select dates this June, including stops in ChicagoDetroit and Boston. See below for a complete list of dates.

Raised primarily in New York City and now living in Los Angeles, Ko’s music highlights the female experience and explores themes of authenticity and empowerment. She draws inspiration from a combo of “New York alt-rock and clubby sound, with 2000’s pop girl energy,” citing influences such as Britney Spears, No Doubt, CSS, Gwen Stefani and more. “It was so playful and unapologetic in a way that other eras weren’t,” she explains.

“The second I put my makeup on and my crazy fur coat and my sunglasses, I feel like I can be anyone and anything I want,” Ko details, going on to say, “My favorite thing to do in life is to laugh and be crazy. I want my music to also embody that totally.”

Beneath the fur and makeup Zoe’s songs inadvertently explore themes of what it’s like to be a young woman today—to be out and partying, bumping up against unspoken expectations, to have your own agency overlooked even when you’re in full control.

Ko released her debut EP Baby Teeth last fall to widespread praise. Popdust praises that the EP, “consists of five tracks to give you the perfect sampling of who Zoe Ko is as an artist—honest, funny, and edgy,” while Earmilk details, “With each captivating production offering a unique glimpse into Zoe Ko’s musical and personal evolution, the introspective yet vibrant EP offers us a sonic world steeped in healing and confidence as she beckons her audience to unleash their emotions, explore their innermost desires, and join her on this voyage of self-discovery.”

She followed up the EP with “EAT / DIRT” and “Touch Therapy,” which landed on a host of notable playlists as well as the cover of Spotify’s “Young & Free” and “SALT” playlists. Ko was also highlighted in Spotify’s “Fresh Finds Class of 2022” and Apple Music’s “New in Alternative,” amongst others.
