5 Surprising Facts About Pearl Jam’s ‘Ten’

0

If the 1990s had an official soundtrack, Ten by Pearl Jam would be one of its defining anthems. The album, released on August 27, 1991, launched the band into grunge superstardom, producing era-defining hits like “Alive,” “Even Flow,” and “Jeremy.” But beyond its platinum status and radio dominance, Ten has a rich and wild history that makes it even more legendary. Here are five little-known facts that will make you hear this album in a whole new way.

1. Eddie Vedder Wrote the Lyrics for Three Songs in One Night—While Surfing

When Eddie Vedder first heard the demo tape that Stone Gossard and Jeff Ament were passing around, he was working as a gas station attendant in San Diego. He took the tape, went for a surf, and in one night, wrote the lyrics for what would become Alive, Once, and Footsteps. That tape, now known as the Momma-Son trilogy, was Vedder’s golden ticket to Seattle and Pearl Jam. Who knew that one night of waves and words would change rock history forever?

2. Even Flow Took Over 50 Takes to Record

If Even Flow sounds like it has an effortless groove, the reality was anything but. Drummer Dave Krusen struggled to lock in the beat, and producer Rick Parashar made the band record it over and over—by some estimates, between 50 and 70 times! By the end of it, the band was completely exhausted and frustrated with the process. Even to this day, guitarist Mike McCready isn’t satisfied with the final take. Let that sink in the next time you crank it up.

3. The Mixing of Ten Left the Band Unhappy

While Ten was a massive success, Pearl Jam wasn’t thrilled with how it sounded. The album was heavily reverbed and polished to the point that it almost sounded more like a classic rock record than a raw grunge album. Years later, bassist Jeff Ament admitted, “I’d love to remix Ten. Just pull some of the reverb off it.” In 2009, the band finally got their wish, releasing a remixed version by producer Brendan O’Brien that stripped away the gloss and let the raw energy shine through.

4. The Hidden Track Master/Slave Bookends the Album

You might not realize it, but Ten technically opens and closes with the same track. Master/Slave, an eerie, atmospheric instrumental, plays before the first song, Once, and returns after the album’s closer, Release. Bassist Jeff Ament came up with the hypnotic bassline, and it was producer Rick Parashar who fleshed it out into the haunting piece that ties the entire album together. It’s a subtle touch, but it adds a sense of full-circle storytelling to the record.

5. Jeremy Was Inspired by a Real Tragedy

Pearl Jam’s Jeremy is one of the most haunting songs of the 1990s, and its origins are even more unsettling. The lyrics were inspired by a real-life tragedy—Jeremy Wade Delle, a high school student from Texas, who tragically took his own life in front of his classmates. Eddie Vedder read about the incident in a newspaper and felt compelled to tell the story in a way that captured both its horror and heartbreak. The song’s unforgettable music video won multiple MTV Video Music Awards, but its stark imagery led to it being banned by some networks.

Nearly 33 years after its release, Ten remains a landmark album in rock history, shaping a generation and defining an era. Whether you’re blasting Alive in the car or reflecting on Black, these hidden details add even more depth to one of the greatest albums of all time. So go ahead—give it another spin, and hear it like it’s 1991 all over again.

5 Surprising Facts About Oasis’ ‘(What’s the Story) Morning Glory?’

(What’s the Story) Morning Glory? That’s all you need to say to conjure this generational anthem of an albun, and a rock and roll masterpiece. It transformed Oasis from indie darlings into stadium-filling superstars, defined Britpop, and gave us some of the most iconic songs of the ‘90s. But even if you’ve played Wonderwall a million times, here are five little-known facts that will change the way you hear this classic album forever.

1. The Recording Process Was Fueled by Chaos—And a Whole Lot of Guinness

Oasis recorded Morning Glory at Rockfield Studios in Wales, a peaceful countryside retreat… that quickly became anything but peaceful. Producer Owen Morris and Noel Gallagher worked at lightning speed, finishing one song per day. But while the sessions were productive, they were also chaotic—Liam Gallagher would often disappear for hours, only to return absolutely hammered. At one point, he and Noel had a massive fight that ended with Liam swinging a cricket bat at his brother’s head. Somehow, despite the mayhem (or maybe because of it), the album was completed in just 15 days.

2. “Some Might Say” Was the Last Stand for Oasis’ Original Drummer

Tony McCarroll, Oasis’ original drummer, played on Definitely Maybe, but by the time the band was ready to record Morning Glory, he was on his way out. The only track he appears on is Some Might Say, which was already in the works before Alan White took over on drums. McCarroll’s departure was far from amicable—Noel Gallagher later admitted that the band wanted someone with more technical skill, and McCarroll’s “barn door” style just wasn’t cutting it. His last contribution? A drum track recorded in a single take, as if he knew he was already out the door.

3. The Album Might Have Kicked Off the Loudness War

If you’ve ever thought Morning Glory sounds ridiculously loud, you’re not wrong. The album’s producer, Owen Morris, pioneered a heavy-handed compression technique known as “brickwalling,” making the music as loud as possible. This approach was so extreme that some music journalists credit the album with sparking the so-called “loudness war” in modern music, where albums keep getting louder and more compressed. Noel Gallagher later joked that Morning Glory is “probably the loudest album ever made”—and he might not be exaggerating.

4. “Champagne Supernova” Features a Secret Guest Guitarist

While Oasis were known for their Gallagher brothers rivalry, they were also great at collaborating with their heroes. One of the album’s most psychedelic and ambitious tracks, Champagne Supernova, features none other than Paul Weller of The Jam and The Style Council on lead guitar and backing vocals. Weller, a huge influence on Noel Gallagher, happened to be recording in the same studio and was invited to jam. His signature style gives the track its swirling, dreamy sound—so next time you hear it, remember that’s the Modfather shredding alongside Noel.

5. The Album Cover Has a Hidden Detail Most Fans Miss

The Morning Glory album cover, showing two men passing each other on Berwick Street in London, looks like a straightforward shot—but there’s a sneaky Easter egg hidden in the background. If you look closely, you’ll see producer Owen Morris standing on the sidewalk, holding the album’s master tape in front of his face. The cover itself cost an eye-watering £25,000 to shoot, and Noel Gallagher later admitted he wasn’t paying enough attention during the process. “I just wanted to make music, man,” he later said. “If I’d known people would be staring at it for 30 years, I might’ve cared more!”

Whether it’s the behind-the-scenes mayhem, secret cameos, or production quirks that shaped its sound, one thing is clear: Nearly 30 years later, Oasis’ (What’s the Story) Morning Glory? still as loud, anthemic, and unforgettable as ever.

Dead Boys Unearth Night of the Living Dead Boys Live Album Featuring Jerry Nolan & John Belushi

0

With the Dead Boys’ first all-new album in over 40 years drawing closer every day, Cleopatra Records continue preparing for its release with the latest in a series of deep dives inside the Cleveland punks’ archive… the night that the Dead Boys became, for one show only, the Dead Dolls.

With regular drummer Johnny Blitz hospitalized following a murderous street attack, and in desperate need of funds for his medical costs, guitarist Cheetah Chrome conceived a benefit show at the band’s regular hang-out, CBGBs.

Swiftly, one concert became a full weekend, as the great and good of the New York punk scene turned out to perform. Blondie, Suicide, the Ramones, the Dictators, Sic Fucks, the Erasers, James Chance and the Contortions, the Student Teachers, the Fleshtones, the Mumps, Helen Robbins, Shrapnel, the Dots, the Rudies, the Senders and Divine and the Neon Women all stepped forward.

Even more excitingly, Blitz’s place at the drum kit was filled not only by New York Doll Jerry Nolan, but also Saturday Night Live regular John Belushi, a long time friend of the band’s.

“He was really concerned about Blitz,” recalls Cheetah.  “In fact. the doctor who worked on Blitz was one of Belushi’s.”  He was also, the guitarist continues, “into really good meat and potatoes, like a blues drummer.  He was high on the blues from Chicago. He had a studio in his basement, with a full kit set up. We used to go down there and bang around.

“He could hold a beat very well, he was very straightforward. For a blues drummer, he was good.”

The Dead Boys’ set tonight was split almost equally between their own material and, in tribute to Nolan’s past, the Dolls’.

“Me and Blitz grew up on the Dolls,” says Cheetah. “We played a lot of Dolls music while we were fucking around at rehearsals, and the Dead Boys did as well, just jamming on them.

“It was a labor of love.  We were rehearsing with Jerry the week before the show, and I remember I was really looking forward to doing the Dolls stuff.”

Even Dolls vocalist David Johansen’s love of the harmonica did not prove an obstacle. Dead Boys frontman Stiv Bators, says Cheetah, could already sing anything. It turned out he could play anything as well, or at least make it look that way.

“He would do the harmonica parts with his hands. Like on ‘Pills,’ he didn’t have a harmonica to play.  He’d just put his hands up to his mouth and make the noise, and it sounded just like the real thing.”

Night of the Living Dead Boys is released on both CD and green and black spattered vinyl.

Track listing
1. Looking For A Kiss
2. Bad Girl

This summer Las Vegas welcomes the largest gathering of hit songwriters in the city’s history as it launches the first Las Vegas Songwriters Festival. Presented by MGM Resorts International and Entersong Entertainment, the groundbreaking event will take place August 21-24, 2025, offering fans an intimate, immersive experience with some of the biggest names in song craft – from country music and beyond.

Hosted at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino by Matt Warren (who has written songs for Darius Rucker, Gary Allan and many more) and founded by Entersong’s Rob Hatch and Mike Every, in collaboration with MGM Resorts, the weekend will feature more than 300 No. 1 hits represented by 100 live performances, as 50 award-winning songwriters perform in various venues throughout the resort.

From perennial chart toppers to multi-Platinum creative trailblazers, featured performers include Bob DiPiero (Reba McEntire, Tim McGraw, Brooks & Dunn), Dean Dillon (George Strait, Kenny Chesney, Chris Stapleton), Liz Rose (Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood) and Victoria Shaw (Garth Brooks, Ricky Martin), among others.

Additional performers include Billy Montana (Garth Brooks), Jesse Lee (Keith Urban), Justin Wilson (Morgan Wallen) and dozens more, inviting fans along on an unforgettable musical journey through “three chords and the truth.”

As the masterminds of the world’s most beloved songs, each writer will mix an entertaining live performance with captivating storytelling, revealing the inspiration behind the work – and even hosting select Q&A sessions.

“For years Mandalay Bay has been one of the leaders in delivering memorable entertainment experiences for its guests and we believe the Las Vegas Songwriters Festival (LVSF) will continue this tradition,” said Paul Davis, Senior Vice President of Booking and Development, MGM Resorts International. “LVSF will provide a platform for songwriters to celebrate their incredible artistry and storytelling that has shaped the industry’s greatest hits and resonate with music fans everywhere.”

Entersong’s Rob Hatch said, “The Las Vegas Songwriters Festival brings together some of the most prolific songwriters of our time – artists whose words and melodies have shaped the soundtrack of our lives. It’s an intimate opportunity to hear the stories behind the songs, straight from the voices that wrote them.”

Fans will have the opportunity to purchase either a General Admission or VIP ticket, along with the ability to purchase a room and ticket package, making the Las Vegas Songwriters Festival’s first year an ideal event and vacation getaway. Artist pre-sales will run Wednesday, Feb. 26 from 10 a.m. PST to Thursday, Feb. 27 at 10 p.m. PST. Members of MGM Rewards will have pre-sale access Thursday, Feb. 27 from 10 a.m. PT to 10 p.m. PT.
