JUST ANNOUNCED: Haviah Mighty Joins Black History Month Showcase Feb 21 at City of Toronto Archives

0

The Canada Black Music Archives is pleased to announce the addition of Toronto rapper Haviah Mighty to their Black History Month Showcase. The accomplished lyricist has won several Juno awards and the coveted Polaris Music Prize in 2019 for her album 13th Floor. The album acts as an open letter on the continuing struggle for equality. She joins an already heavy line-up featuring the Dream Warriors— who just celebrated their 35th anniversary in music, and multi-disciplinary emcee, Mathematik.

The Black History Month Showcase is part of the CBMA’s Black History Month programming and is presented in partnership with the City of Toronto Music Office. This event will take place once more at the City of Toronto Archives on Friday, February 21st.

Hosting the evening is Andy McCurbin aka ‘Brother A’. The MC was a popular presence in the early days of Toronto hip-hop. Masters of the mix spinning between sets include DJ Carl Allen, DJ DTS, and Joey from Sound Quest. Special guest speakers that evening include former President of the Ontario Black History Society, Dr. Rosemary Sadlier, and Dr. Mark Campbell of Northside Hip-Hop.

Those in attendance are welcome to explore the Canadian Cyphers: Elements of Toronto Hip-Hop exhibit and music video screenings in between acts. This free event will run from 6:00– 9:00pm, with donations encouraged. Exclusive merchandise, drinks and food will also be available for purchase. Book your tickets now on Eventbrite.

Join the CBMA this February to celebrate Toronto’s impact on the hip-hop genre!

Thank you to our partners at the City of Toronto Music Office, the City of Toronto Archives, Retrontario, and Northside Hip Hop for making this programming possible.

Mumford & Sons Release New Single “Malibu” From Upcoming Album RUSHMERE, Out March 28

0

Mumford & Sons share the second track to be lifted from their forthcoming fifth album, RUSHMERE. “Malibu” is streaming now. RUSHMERE will be released on March 28 through Island EMI Group / Glassnote.

“Malibu” plays beautifully with those close harmonies that helped to shape Mumford & Sons’ signature sound. The slow, multi-layered build and the swell of instruments in its eventual crescendo, “Malibu” is another timely example of what Mumford & Sons create so effortlessly as they reveal the shape and soul of RUSHMERE.

Marcus Mumford on “Malibu:” “’Malibu’ was the first song we wrote when we got back together in Los Angeles in January 2023. The song just felt like us, and the process of recording it with Dave [Cobb] captured it on record in a way that made us feel it had to open RUSHMERE. We love it.”

The track follows the recent announcement, and subsequent selling out, of an intimate global club tour that kicks off in Amsterdam on March 5 and concludes at Brooklyn’s Paramount on March 26. The 9-date run also brings the band home to London at the O2 Kentish Town Forum on March 9. All dates sold out within an hour of on sale. Further tour plans for later this year will be shared shortly.

At the weekend, Mumford & Sons were one of the special guests at SNL50: The Homecoming Concert at New York’s Radio City, performing a storming rendition of I Will Wait and a cover of The Boxer (with Jerry Douglas) by Simon & Garfunkel. The band also rocked up to Houston Hall to play a last-minute surprise ‘pop up’ set to stunned drinkers.

Rushmere is the spot where it all began for Mumford & Sons. The pond, located on Wimbledon Common in south-west London, is where Marcus Mumford, Ben Lovett, and Ted Dwane first hung out and imagined the initial idea of putting a band together. Rushmere was as familiar to them as the instruments they played, and is at the heart of their origin story. The track has already become one of the most played tracks on British radio since its launch.

The album was produced by nine-time Grammy winner Dave Cobb and recorded at RCA Studio A in Nashville, in Savannah, GA, and back in the UK at Marcus’ studio in Devon.

RUSHMERE is the beginning for Mumford & Sons’ next phase, and it follows an intense period of creativity for the trio.

Patterson Hood Releases “The Forks of Cypress” Featuring Waxahatchee, Announces 2025 Tour

0

Drive-By Truckers co-founder Patterson Hood has shared “The Forks of Cypress (feat. Waxahatchee),” the latest single (featuring Katie Crutchfield) from his landmark new solo album, Exploding Trees & Airplane Screams, arriving via ATO Records on Friday, February 21. Pre-orders are available now. An official music video – filmed by Bradley Wagner and Juan M. Soria at the historic Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY before Drive-By Truckers took the stage on their Southern Rock Opera Revisited Tour earlier this year and featuring aerial footage of Hood’s hometown of Florence, AL provided by local pilot John David Apkarian of Wings Over Bama – premieres today on YouTube.

“The Forks of Cypress a real place, a few miles just north of my hometown of Florence, Alabama,” says Patterson Hood. “A former plantation house, once owned by a cousin of Andrew Jackson, it was struck by a ‘lightning cluster’ in 1966 – when I was two – and exploded into flames, burning to the ground in under five minutes. All that was left were these huge columns, in a rectangle on top of the hill overlooking the meadow. It was right by a very creepy rickety one lane bridge that the locals called Ghost Bridge. I drove past this (and crossed the scary bridge) every week of my childhood on my way to my Great Uncle’s house (where I spent every weekend). Later, as a teenager, kids would drive dates out to Ghost Bridge and tell ghost stories and make out. The bridge was torn down about a decade ago.

“I wrote the song as pure fiction, inspired by those great story songs that Bobbie Gentry did, an ‘Ode to Billie Joe,’ etc., where she implies a story without really telling it. In my head, I heard Katie Crutchfield (Waxahatchee) singing it with me and was blessed that she was willing to do so. She’s one of my very favorite artists, and such a lovely person.

“The song was fleshed out wonderfully by Phil and Brad Cook (who played keyboards, dobro and bass on it), Dan Hunt on drums, and then Kevin Morby put the cherry on top with a stunning lead part.

“Whipped cream and cherry.”

Produced by Chris Funk (The Decemberists, Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks) at various studios in Hood’s current hometown of Portland, OR, Exploding Trees & Airplane Screams marks the singer-songwriter-guitarist’s most expansive and ambitious extracurricular effort to date, supported by a stellar cast of friends and fellow musicians including Waxahatchee, Brad and Phil Cook (Megafaun), Kevin Morby, Wednesday, Brad Morgan and Jay Gonzalez (Drive-By Truckers), Steve Berlin (Los Lobos, The Blasters), David Barbe (Sugar, Mercyland), Nate Query (The Decemberists), Steve Drizos (Jerry Joseph and The Jackmormons), Daniel Hunt (Neko Case, M Ward), and Stuart Bogie (The Hold Steady, Goose).

The 10-track was heralded late in 2024 with the first single, “A Werewolf and a Girl,” featuring additional vocals from Lydia Loveless. A lyric video directed by Jason Shevchuk is streaming now on YouTube.

Hood will celebrate the arrival of Exploding Trees & Airplane Screams with an eagerly anticipated run of US headline dates. The Exploding Trees & Airplane Screams 2025 Tour – which will feature backing from his band, The Sensurrounders, along with support from special guest Lydia Loveless – gets underway March 18 at Somerville, MA’s Arts at the Armory and then travels into April. Hood – who is also set for a two-night solo stand at Little Rock, AR’s White Water Tavern on May 2-3 – will then reconvene with The Sensurrounders for a very special double bill alongside MJ Lenderman as part of Charleston, SC’s famed Spoleto Festival USA on May 24. Before the tour begins, Hood will be performing a stripped-down acoustic set and signing at Music Millenium for free in his hometown of Portland, OR on release day, February 21 at 6 PM.

Paul Simon Announces “A Quiet Celebration Tour” With Intimate 2025 Dates Across North America

0

Today the legendary singer-songwriter Paul Simon announced “A Quiet Celebration Tour,” a US Tour for this Spring and Summer 2025 where he will present the live-debut performance of his critically acclaimed, Grammy-nominated album Seven Psalms, as well as perform a celebration of his timeless classics. The evolution of this extraordinary artist continues to unfold with this offering, in which Simon chose to perform in intimate venues where the acoustics are optimal in consideration of the severe hearing loss that he incurred over the last few years.

It was during the recording of Seven Psalms, as revealed in the acclaimed In Restless Dreams documentary, that Simon began to steadily lose the hearing in his left ear which initially made extended live performances impossible. Together with the Stanford Initiative to Cure Hearing Loss, and his own production team, Simon redesigned his entire stage set up to make performing viable. This included moving monitors to surround him as recently discussed on CBS Mornings LINK.

Inspired to perform again, Simon began work rehearsing and figuring out how he could bring Seven Psalms to the stage along with new arrangements of familiar favorites. Recorded on entirely acoustic instruments and performed predominantly by Paul, Seven Psalms transcended the concept of the “album” and was released as a single piece of continuous music in seven movements. Simon often says the listener completes the song, and he was eager to expand the experience into the live forum by performing this intricately layered work in intimate rooms with pristine acoustics.

The tour will begin on April 4 in New Orleans and travel throughout North America and Canada, concluding in Seattle in August. The band will include: Caleb Burhans (viola), Jamey Haddad (percussion), Gyan Riley (guitar), Mick Rossi (piano, keys), Andy Snitzer (saxophone), Nancy Stagnita (flute), Mark Stewart (guitar) and Eugene Friesen (Cello). Steve Gadd and Matt Chamberlin will alternate on drums.

All shows on sale Friday, February 21st at 10 AM local time.

“Goddess of Slide: The Forgotten Story of Ellen McIlwaine” Premieres Across Canada on CBC Gem, March 12

0

The feature documentary film about the goddess of the slide guitar, Ellen McIlwaine, by Montreal-based award-winning director Alfonso Maiorana at Soul Flicker Films, premieres across Canada on Wednesday, March 12 on CBC Gem.

Goddess of Slide: The Forgotten Story of Ellen McIlwaine is a personal and heartfelt story that follows Ellen McIlwaine’s relentless pursuit to claim her rightful place in music history. She was one of the first women to choose the slide guitar as her instrument of choice, even when everyone around her suggested otherwise. She would lose out on lucrative record contracts and management, all because she refused to conform to what managers and music producers believed an up-and-coming artist should look and sound like.

Everyone – from fans to fellow musicians to music journalists – were all in agreement: Ellen McIlwaine should have been a household name!

Eight months after arriving in Greenwich Village with no prospects, Ellen found herself opening for the biggest blues legends in the world, like Odetta, Richie Havens, and Mississippi John Hurt. But it’s the six magical nights a young fearless redheaded Ellen ignited the stage with Jimi Hendrix that changed the course of her life. Goddess of Slide is an intimate look at a pioneer performer whose road trip to stardom and long career deserves a rightful place in music history.

Goddess of Slide began its film festival run at the Calgary International Film Festival in September of 2024 and came home with its first of many awards: the Audience Choice Award for Music on Screen Feature. The documentary continues its film festival run in the U.S. and Europe.

A special in-person screening of Goddess of Slide will be held at the Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema in Toronto (506 Bloor St West) on Sunday, March 9 at 12:30PM. Director Alfonso Maiorana will be present for a Q&A immediately following the screening.

Goddess of Slide is produced by Alfonso Maiorana and Agata De Santis, with support from the Canada Media Fund, the Quebec Film and Television Tax Credit, The Canadian Film or Video Production Tax Credit, documentary Channel, the Rogers Documentary Fund and the Hot Docs-Slaight Family Fund.
