Exclusive Paul McCartney Coins To Be Auctioned by Stack’s Bowers Galleries

0

Stack’s Bowers Galleries, one of the oldest and largest rare currency auction houses in the world, is honored to once again partner with The Royal Mint of the United Kingdom for an auction sale of exciting British numismatics. Presented in a special auction on March 19, 2025, will be a bespoke set of Presentation Edition gold and silver coins honoring Paul McCartney, one of the most acclaimed icons of music and pop culture.

Struck in 5 kilogram formats, these magnificent treasures deliver an incredible visual appeal that is matched only by their rarity. Just one gold and four silver pieces are available for collectors, and they will be presented exclusively through this Stack’s Bowers Galleries auction. You can go here to see them.

Paul McCartney is a British musician, singer, songwriter, and composer who first rose to international prominence as a member of The Beatles, one of the most influential and successful bands in music history. Acclaimed for his melodic bass playing, versatile vocal range, and prolific songwriting, McCartney’s influence spans generations. Quite simply, Paul is either your favorite musician or he is your favorite musician’s favorite musician.

In honor of his indelible impact on culture and society, The Royal Mint worked directly with Paul McCartney’s production company, MPL Communications, and with Paul himself to develop a truly exceptional coin release. Hand crafted with care and precision under the guidance of Royal Mint CEO Anne Jessopp and the King’s Assay Master Daniel Thomas, these are some of the rarest and most inspiring pieces to emerge from The Royal Mint in the modern era. When asked how it felt to be commemorated on such a coin, Paul McCartney responded, “This feels like a huge honor. It’s not anything I would have ever expected to happen when I was a kid.”

The gold 5 kilogram piece represents the largest gold Proof coin produced as part of The Royal Mint’s Music Legends series. It took more than 250 hours to make, including three days of polishing. Hand-signed by Paul during his 2024 Got Back tour in Paris, it is a truly unique and inspiring treasure like Paul himself. In addition, the winning bidder will receive a short video from Paul McCartney congratulating them on their acquisition.

Only four of the silver 5 kilogram pieces exist in this Presentation format, excluding a fifth example that was gifted to Paul. Like the gold counterpart, these silver coins are the largest silver Proof coins in the Music Legends series and reflect the first time Paul has been honored on a British coin.

Rebecca Morgan, Director of Commemorative Coin at The Royal Mint said, “This is an exciting opportunity for collectors and fans of Paul McCartney to own a unique item celebrating one of the most influential music artists and songwriters of all time.

“Each coin available at auction is a testament to the exceptional skills of our craftspeople at The Royal Mint. Taking hundreds of hours to produce, the masterworks crafted from gold and silver feature highlights from Paul’s career and his journey to becoming one of Britain’s most successful artists in history.

“The impressive 5 kilogram gold coin has also been hand signed by Paul during his ‘Got Back’ tour at the end of last year – a symbol of his personal seal of approval of these iconic one-of-one pieces.”

Each of the Presentation coins is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity signed by Paul McCartney himself. Every one of these represents a crowning jewel for a world-class collection of British coinage or music memorabilia. Additionally, Paul and The Royal Mint will be donating a percentage of the revenue from this auction to charity, which means that buyers will acquire a historic keepsake while also contributing to a good cause.

This joint-effort between Stack’s Bowers Galleries and The Royal Mint comes on the heels of several similar partnerships between the two organizations in recent years, including a sale of special Royal Succession coins that realized $5.1 million in August 2023 and an auction of First Strike coinage that realized $1.8 million in October 2024.

Brian Kendrella, President of Stack’s Bowers Galleries stated, “It’s an incredible honor to be working with Paul McCartney, MPL Communications and The Royal Mint in bringing such rare and iconic works to public auction. Paul McCartney’s timeless music and multigenerational appeal continue to inspire and unite fans across the world, making this a memorable event that all can enjoy.”

Alessia Cara Announces Love & Hyperbole Album and 2025 World Tour

0

After building up widespread anticipation, GRAMMY® Award-winning history-making superstar Alessia Cara presents her anxiously awaited fourth full-length album, Love & Hyperbole, out February 14th on Def Jam Recordings. In support of the album, she will embark on an extensive global headline tour. As her biggest international jaunt yet, it kicks off in North America on April 6 at Orpheum Theatre in Boston, MA, visits major markets, and concludes on June 19 at Progresja Summer Stage in Warsaw, Poland. Get tickets HERE.

This 14-track body of work sees her in top form as both a vocal dynamo and an eloquent songwriter. From the energetic opener “Go Outside!” to the reflective finale “Clearly,” the LP traces an enthralling journey through the ups, downs, twists, and turns of infatuation, love, heartbreak, and letting go. At the same time, it illuminates her sonic progression with its immersive soundscape and cohesive vision.

Ultimately, Love & Hyperbole showcases her evolution as a powerhouse vocalist, empathetic songwriter, and force of nature. She initially teased this chapter with “Dead Man.” People spoke to her exclusively about this chapter, going on to note, “she has a few new surroundings to thank for where she’s headed on her soon-to-come fourth album.”

Since catapulting to stardom with quintessential loner anthem “Here” in 2015, the singer/songwriter has matured alongside her audience, capturing the highs and lows of adolescence and young adulthood with camera-like clarity. In many ways, Cara’s new era is a snapshot of an artist finally processing her meteoric rise in the music industry. The Grammy winner’s debut single, “Here,” peaked at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and went on to sell three million copies. Her platinum-selling debut album, Know-It-All, delivered another smash hit with “Scars to Your Beautiful” and she memorably contributed “How Far I’ll Go” to the Moana soundtrack. She then added further platinum plaques to her collection with “Stay,” a dizzying club collaboration with Zedd, and an unforgettable feature on Logic’s “1-800-273-8255.” The Brampton, Ontario, native returned in 2018 with The Pains of Growing, which won a Juno Award for Best Album and Songwriter of the Year cemented Cara as one of her generation’s foremost singer/songwriters. Her last album, In The Meantime, that featured hit singles “Best Days” and “Sweet Dream.” The album was met with critical acclaim from Pitchfork, Billboard, Rolling Stone, with The New York Times calling it “Incisive and introspective as ever. Cara continues to position herself as both pop star and therapist.”

Thus far, Alessia Cara has generated billions of streams, earned dozens of multi platinum certifications around the world, and notably made history as “the first Canadian to win ‘Best New Artist’ at the GRAMMY Awards.” At the same time, she has sold out tours on multiple continents and emerged as the rare force equally comfortable on a track with Logic and Khalid or Juanes, Bastille, Major Lazer, and The Warning.

It’s just the beginning though. Welcome to her next chapter with Love & Hyperbole!

Tangerine Dream’s Phaedra Celebrates 50 Years with a Definitive 6-Disc Box Set Featuring Unreleased Live Tracks and Steven Wilson’s 5.1 Mix

0

‘Phaedra’ is one of Tangerine Dream’s most successful and acclaimed albums and this limited edition 5CD/Blu-ray box set is a deep-dive celebration of one of the most important and pioneering electronic albums of all time.

To be released on 18th April, ‘Phaedra 50th Anniversary Edition’ is a six-disc 50th anniversary boxed set featuring a remastered original album mix, along with two discs of out-takes from the recording sessions. The complete concert at the Victoria Palace Theatre in London in June 1974 (the band’s debut live appearance in the UK) and a Blu-ray disc featuring Steven Wilson’s 5.1 Surround Sound mix. The box also features an illustrated book with a new essay by Tangerine Dream authority Wouter Bessels.

Originally released by Virgin Records in February 1974, ‘Phaedra’ spent 15 weeks on the UK charts upon its release. Recorded at The Manor studios in November 1973, it was the band’s first album for Virgin and vitally, it was the first record in which they used a sequencer. This is seen as the moment the band created their signature sound, and this development in their music production would go on to have a huge impact and influence on electronic music to this day and had a fundamental effect on ‘Kosmische Musik’ – a term coined by Tangerine Dream founding member Edgar Froese which came into regular use before ‘krautrock’ and was preferred by some German artists.

‘Phaedra’s groundbreaking use of synthesizers and sequencers created a lush and immersive soundscape that was unlike anything else at the time. Its success came from word-of-mouth and self discovery, despite the record receiving no radio play support upon its original release, it integrated itself into cultural society and helped to popularise the concept of electronic music as an art form and showed that it could be just as, if not more so, complex and sophisticated than any other forms of music.

Gibson Partners with Johnny Marr to Create 20 Gibson ’84 Les Paul Standard Guitars

0

In celebration of Gibson Garage Fest, a series of events commemorating the one-year anniversary of the Gibson Garage London, Gibson has partnered with the world-renowned musician Johnny Marr to release 20 hand-signed Gibson Les Paul guitars for charity, based on the iconic Les Paul Standard he played in The Smiths.

The Gibson ’84 Les Paul Standard with Bigsby signed by Johnny Marr will be available exclusively at the Gibson Garage London starting at 11 am on Friday, February 21, until they are sold out. All profits from the sale of the instruments will be donated by Johnny Marr and Gibson to support the Teenage Cancer Trust.

These Made to Measure guitars are inspired by Johnny Marr’s Les Paul Standard from 1984, first played by Marr during the recording of The Smiths’ iconic second album, Meat is Murder. The model became Johnny’s go-to guitar and was used extensively in both live performances and recording sessions with The Smiths, as well as during his time as a member of The The, The Pretenders, The Cribs, as well as his work with Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds.

Marr says: “These guitars are a faithful reproduction of my beloved 1984 Gibson Les Paul, bought in Manchester back in the day. It’s the guitar I’ve kept and used since that time on loads of different records, so I was beyond delighted to see it recreated in aid of Teenage Cancer Trust. It’s an amazing organization that I’ve had an association with for about ten years. It’s a privilege to be involved in this good cause and I’m very glad to be affiliated with it, especially when it involves making a fantastic Les Paul.”

Alongside the hand-signed Johnny Marr guitars, an exclusive collaborative range of Teenage Cancer Trust and Gibson merchandise will also be available. Limited edition t-shirts, hoodies, and caps featuring a newly created design by Jamie Hewlett to celebrate the 25th year of Teenage Cancer Trust at the Royal Albert Hall will be available at the Gibson Garage London, Gibson.com, and shop.teenagecancertrust.org—with proceeds from each item sold donated directly to Teenage Cancer Trust.

“The influence of Johnny Marr can be seen and heard across generations of musicians,” says Jamie Johnson, Head of Music and Entertainment at Teenage Cancer Trust. “Not only is he an incredible writer and player, but he has a huge depth of knowledge in his craft. Combined with Gibson’s generosity and mastery, we are thrilled to benefit from this unique opportunity.

“The support we receive from Johnny and Gibson can be seen across the UK, where we are able to make very real and meaningful differences for young people with cancer. Thank you to Johnny and the team at Gibson for their kindness and generosity.”

Lee Bartram, Gibson Head of Commercial, Marketing, and Cultural Influence – EMEA, adds, “To correspond with the Gibson Garage London’s one-year anniversary, it’s a great honor to continue our partnership with the Teenage Cancer Trust for another year and, for 2025, we have the legend that is Johnny Marr adding his support.

“These guitars Johnny has signed take inspiration from his 1984 Gibson Les Paul Standard with Bigsby, which has been featured on many classic British records over the years and are a fitting tribute to the amazing work the TCT continues to do. Gibson is also thrilled to bring a range of apparel with the TCT to the Gibson Garage London, expanding its longtime partnership with the distinguished charity.”

The Gibson Garage London is located at 61-62 Eastcastle St, London, UK (one block from Oxford Street) and is open daily Monday-Friday from 11:00-7:00pm, Saturday from 10:00-7:00pm, and from 12:00-6:00pm on Sundays.

5 Common Mistakes to Avoid When Preparing a Cash Flow Statement

0

By Mitch Rice

Have you ever wondered why preparing a financial statement can be challenging? For those aiming to achieve the ACA Professional Level, understanding the demands of the qualification is essential. Mastering the preparation of a Cash Flow Statement is one of these demands, providing vital insights into cash inflows, outflows, and financial strategies. A well-prepared statement reveals liquidity and solvency while aiding in sound planning. Yet, many professionals, even experienced ones, often make avoidable errors. Let’s dive into these mistakes and how you can steer clear of them.

Table of Contents

  • Misclassifying Cash Flows
  • Ignoring Non-Cash Transactions
  • Overlooking Foreign Currency Effects
  • Failing to Reconcile with Bank Statements
  • Not Updating for New Accounting Standards
  • Conclusion

1. Misclassifying Cash Flow

One of the most often occurring mistakes here might mislead investors about the cash handling of a corporation. Cash flow classification into operating, investing, or financing activity calls for accuracy.

How to Avoid:

Understand Each Category: Learn what qualifies as operating, investing, and financing activity. Daily company operations are part of operating activities; investing entails asset acquisitions or sales; finance addresses loans and equity-related transactions. Taking time to review each category is crucial, as misclassifications usually result from uncertainty across categories.

Use Clear Guidelines: Consult accepted accounting rules, including IFRS, to direct your categories. Make flow charts or checklists to guarantee consistency in classifying every purchase. This habit helps prevent mistakes, especially when processing complicated transactions.

Regular Training: Especially while getting ready for the ACA Professional Level tests, attend training courses to maintain current with your knowledge. Frequent training guarantees your awareness of the most recent techniques and frequent mistakes.

2. Ignoring Non-Cash Transactions

Neglecting these can result in overstated or understated cash flow, impacting financial analysis.

Overlooking non-cash transactions, such as depreciation or asset exchanges, can lead to an incomplete Cash Flow Statement. Although real cash transfers are not involved in these transactions, they greatly affect financial results.

How to Avoid:

Maintain Detailed Records: Keep track of all non-cash activities and ensure they’re reflected appropriately. Install a strong accounting system that notes non-cash things for inspection.

Regular Reviews: Review financial records to identify and account for non-cash transactions. Working with your team, cross-check entries to prevent omissions.

Utilise Software Tools: Use accounting software that automatically incorporates non-cash transactions into the Cash Flow Statement.

3. Overlooking Foreign Currency Effects

Ignoring changes in currency fluctuations will skew a company’s actual cash situation. Cash balances and financial results may be much influenced by the volatility of currencies.

How to Avoid:

Monitor Exchange Rates: Regularly update and apply the correct exchange rates during conversions. Provide a mechanism for documenting and monitoring variations in exchange rates.

Adjust Accordingly: Show any Cash Flow Statement gains or losses from changes in currency fluctuations. To improve openness, provide a distinct line item for foreign currency changes.

Consult Experts: Seek advice from financial experts on handling complex currency transactions, particularly if preparing for the ACA Professional Level exams.

4. Failing to Reconcile with Bank Statements

This oversight can cause discrepancies that complicate audits and financial reporting.

Without reconciliations, differences between the Cash Flow Statement and bank statements may develop. Even minor errors can lead to significant financial misstatements.

How to Avoid:

Regular Reconciliation: Frequent comparisons of your records with bank statements can help you find and fix disparities. Plan regular reconciliations to keep current with financial data.

Automate Where Possible: Utilise accounting software to assist in timely and accurate reconciliations. Automation improves productivity and lowers human mistakes.

Maintain Documentation: Save complete records of every correction and reconciliation. This approach guarantees correctness and facilitates audit procedures in addition.

5. Not Updating for New Accounting Standards

Staying updated with standards is vital for compliance and accurate financial reporting.

Accounting rules change; neglecting to keep current might cause mistakes and non-compliance. Often, new criteria bring modifications that affect the reported cash flow.

How to Avoid:

Continuous Learning: Engage in regular professional development to stay abreast of changes. See courses catered to the ACA Professional Level, webinars, and seminars.

Consult Authoritative Sources: Refer to official publications and updates from accounting standard boards. Include these changes in your accounting systems.

Implement Changes Promptly: As soon as new standards are revealed, update your accounting systems and procedures. Train your team to ensure a seamless transition.

Conclusion

By being aware of these common mistakes and following the advice given, professionals can make their Cash Flow Statements more accurate and reliable. For those who want to learn more, MPES Learning has courses equipped to meet the needs of accounting professionals.

5 Surprising Facts About Nine Inch Nails’ ‘The Downward Spiral’

0

Trent Reznor’s The Downward Spiral put Nine Inch Nails as industrial rock’s vanguard, blending raw emotion with cutting-edge production. A conceptual odyssey through self-destruction, the album remains as haunting today as it was 30 years ago. But beneath its nihilistic surface lie secrets even die-hard fans may not know. Here are five deep cuts into the album that changed music forever.

1. The Album Was Recorded in a House Haunted by Infamy

When Reznor sought out a location to record The Downward Spiral, he didn’t just pick any studio—he chose 10050 Cielo Drive, the site of the infamous Manson Family murders. Dubbed “Le Pig” (a reference to the word scrawled in blood on the front door), the house provided an eerie backdrop to the album’s themes of violence and mental collapse. Reznor later met Sharon Tate’s sister, Patti, who asked if he was exploiting the tragedy. That conversation shook him, leading him to reflect: “What if it was my sister?” He moved out soon after, and the house was demolished. The music, however, remains—a ghostly echo of the space where it was created.

2. “Closer” Wasn’t Supposed to Be a Sex Anthem

Closer is often mistaken as the ultimate seduction song, but in reality, the track is anything but sexy. It’s a song about self-loathing, obsession, and power dynamics. Reznor, frustrated that it became a strip club staple, clarified: “It’s super negative and super hateful… I didn’t think it would become a frat-party anthem.” Sonically, the track is built around a heavily modified bass drum sample from Iggy Pop’s “Nightclubbing,” layered with unsettling industrial textures. The disturbing, Mark Romanek-directed video—which includes a crucified monkey and spinning pig’s head—only reinforced the song’s grotesque irony.

3. A Leitmotif Haunts the Entire Album

Hidden within The Downward Spiral is a recurring melodic theme—a haunting motif that appears in different forms throughout the record. First introduced on Piggy as a somber organ line, it resurfaces on Closer (as a piano phrase), the title track (on acoustic guitar), and A Warm Place (in reversed form). This leitmotif threads the album together, reinforcing the protagonist’s inevitable collapse. It’s subtle but deliberate, showing Reznor’s meticulous attention to musical storytelling. In a record built around decay and despair, the repetition of this theme becomes an auditory descent into madness.

4. “Hurt” Almost Didn’t Make the Cut

Now regarded as one of the greatest songs of all time—thanks in part to Johnny Cash’s devastating 2002 cover—Hurt was nearly scrapped. Reznor hesitated to include it, fearing it was too personal, too fragile, too raw. Unlike the rest of the album’s abrasive soundscapes, Hurt is stark and intimate, blending acoustic guitar with industrial noise. The song’s aching vulnerability became a defining moment in Reznor’s career, proving that NIN wasn’t just about aggression—it was about emotion. Cash later transformed it into a song of regret and mortality, leading Reznor to famously say: “That song isn’t mine anymore.”

5. The Album’s Opening Sound Is a Disturbing Sci-Fi Sample

The Downward Spiral opens with Mr. Self Destruct, a brutal onslaught of distortion and noise. But what’s that unsettling sound at the beginning? It’s a sample from George Lucas’ 1971 dystopian film THX 1138, featuring a man being brutally beaten by a robotic police officer. The relentless mechanical violence sets the tone for the album’s themes of dehumanization and submission to power. Reznor frequently wove obscure film samples into the album, including screams from Robot Jox on The Becoming and a disturbing snippet from The Texas Chain Saw Massacre buried in Reptile. These sonic Easter eggs make The Downward Spiral even more unnerving on repeat listens.

From its infamous recording location to its hidden musical motifs, The Downward Spiral is an intricate tapestry of pain, control, and self-destruction. Reznor crafted a work that blurred the lines between music, film, and psychological horror, creating a landmark that still kicks you in the head and stomach 30 years later. Whether you’re rediscovering it or hearing it for the first time, just remember—this is not an album you listen to. It’s an album you survive.

5 Surprising Facts About Elvis Costello & The Attraction’s ‘This Year’s Model’

Elvis Costello’s This Year’s Model released in 1978, was a battle cry of new wave, a manifesto of punk’s snarl, and a power-pop masterclass. But behind its manic energy and relentless hooks lie secrets that even the most devoted Costello fans may not know. Pump  it up, because we’re about to dive deep into five fascinating facts about this landmark album.

1. The Infamous Off-Center Album Cover Was a Deliberate Middle Finger

Most artists dream of a perfect album cover—crisp, aligned, and polished. Not Elvis Costello. The original UK pressing of This Year’s Model featured a deliberately off-center sleeve, making the title appear as “His Year’s Model” and cropping Costello’s name into “Lvis Costello.” It wasn’t a printing error—it was a calculated statement. Designed by the legendary Barney Bubbles, the cover was meant to disrupt expectations, forcing record buyers to do a double take. The misaligned print also symbolized the jagged, restless energy of the music itself. When the album was released in America, the artwork was realigned, but in true Costello fashion, the UK got the edgier, more provocative version.

2. “Pump It Up” Wasn’t an Anthem—It Was a Satire of Excess

At first listen, Pump It Up sounds like an adrenaline-fueled party song, with its relentless bassline and frantic energy. But Costello, ever the subversive storyteller, was making fun of that very lifestyle. Written during the infamous Stiffs Live Tour—where sex, drugs, and rock & roll ran wild—Pump It Up was Costello’s response to watching hedonism consume people around him. The song’s frenetic pace and tight groove only amplify its irony, capturing the sound of excess while mocking it at the same time. And the music video? A twitchy, manic Costello bouncing on his toes, as if physically embodying the song’s critique of overindulgence.

3. “(I Don’t Want to Go to) Chelsea” Was Written in a Haunted Office

Costello wrote the scathing Chelsea while working as a computer programmer. Late one night, he sneaked his guitar into the office and penned the song in complete solitude—except for the eerie hum of computers and the distant flicker of a coffee machine. The inspiration? Childhood trips to London’s Chelsea district and the flood of Swinging Sixties nostalgia that followed. Musically, the song pulls from the Who’s I Can’t Explain and the Kinks’ All Day and All of the Night, but bassist Bruce Thomas’s hypnotic groove gave it a completely new dimension. Costello later admitted that he had no idea the song would become one of his defining anthems—it was just a way to pass time in a job he hated.

4. Steve Nieve’s Organ Sound Wasn’t Just Out of Tune—It Was Evil

Steve Nieve’s sinister organ playing on This Year’s Model wasn’t a happy accident. Costello specifically wanted the organ to sound “thin” and “evil.” Using a deliberately out-of-tune Vox Continental, Nieve crafted a sound that was sharp, unsettling, and unlike anything else in punk or new wave at the time. The eerie, jagged tones added a layer of paranoia and urgency to tracks like Pump It Up and Lipstick Vogue. That unmistakable keyboard sound became a signature of the Attractions and a defining element of the album’s claustrophobic tension.

5. The Album Almost Didn’t Include One of Its Best Songs

American fans of This Year’s Model might not realize they got a different version than the UK audience. The original UK release included the politically charged Night Rally and Chelsea, but when the album was issued in the U.S., Columbia Records insisted on swapping them out for Radio Radio, a song Costello famously performed on Saturday Night Live in 1977 in direct defiance of NBC’s producers. The move ultimately worked in Costello’s favor—Radio Radio became one of his most celebrated songs. However, die-hard fans argue that removing Night Rally altered the album’s dark undertones, making the American version just a little less sinister.

This Year’s Model is a snarling, spitting, meticulously crafted masterpiece that changed the landscape of music forever. With its off-kilter artwork, satirical songwriting, haunted origins, and groundbreaking sound, it continues to resonate decades later. Elvis Costello didn’t just make an album—he built a time bomb, and 46 years later, it’s still ticking.
