Paul Simon Announces “A Quiet Celebration Tour” With Intimate 2025 Dates Across North America

0

Today the legendary singer-songwriter Paul Simon announced “A Quiet Celebration Tour,” a US Tour for this Spring and Summer 2025 where he will present the live-debut performance of his critically acclaimed, Grammy-nominated album Seven Psalms, as well as perform a celebration of his timeless classics. The evolution of this extraordinary artist continues to unfold with this offering, in which Simon chose to perform in intimate venues where the acoustics are optimal in consideration of the severe hearing loss that he incurred over the last few years.

It was during the recording of Seven Psalms, as revealed in the acclaimed In Restless Dreams documentary, that Simon began to steadily lose the hearing in his left ear which initially made extended live performances impossible. Together with the Stanford Initiative to Cure Hearing Loss, and his own production team, Simon redesigned his entire stage set up to make performing viable. This included moving monitors to surround him as recently discussed on CBS Mornings LINK.

Inspired to perform again, Simon began work rehearsing and figuring out how he could bring Seven Psalms to the stage along with new arrangements of familiar favorites. Recorded on entirely acoustic instruments and performed predominantly by Paul, Seven Psalms transcended the concept of the “album” and was released as a single piece of continuous music in seven movements. Simon often says the listener completes the song, and he was eager to expand the experience into the live forum by performing this intricately layered work in intimate rooms with pristine acoustics.

The tour will begin on April 4 in New Orleans and travel throughout North America and Canada, concluding in Seattle in August. The band will include: Caleb Burhans (viola), Jamey Haddad (percussion), Gyan Riley (guitar), Mick Rossi (piano, keys), Andy Snitzer (saxophone), Nancy Stagnita (flute), Mark Stewart (guitar) and Eugene Friesen (Cello). Steve Gadd and Matt Chamberlin will alternate on drums.

All shows on sale Friday, February 21st at 10 AM local time.

“Goddess of Slide: The Forgotten Story of Ellen McIlwaine” Premieres Across Canada on CBC Gem, March 12

0

The feature documentary film about the goddess of the slide guitar, Ellen McIlwaine, by Montreal-based award-winning director Alfonso Maiorana at Soul Flicker Films, premieres across Canada on Wednesday, March 12 on CBC Gem.

Goddess of Slide: The Forgotten Story of Ellen McIlwaine is a personal and heartfelt story that follows Ellen McIlwaine’s relentless pursuit to claim her rightful place in music history. She was one of the first women to choose the slide guitar as her instrument of choice, even when everyone around her suggested otherwise. She would lose out on lucrative record contracts and management, all because she refused to conform to what managers and music producers believed an up-and-coming artist should look and sound like.

Everyone – from fans to fellow musicians to music journalists – were all in agreement: Ellen McIlwaine should have been a household name!

Eight months after arriving in Greenwich Village with no prospects, Ellen found herself opening for the biggest blues legends in the world, like Odetta, Richie Havens, and Mississippi John Hurt. But it’s the six magical nights a young fearless redheaded Ellen ignited the stage with Jimi Hendrix that changed the course of her life. Goddess of Slide is an intimate look at a pioneer performer whose road trip to stardom and long career deserves a rightful place in music history.

Goddess of Slide began its film festival run at the Calgary International Film Festival in September of 2024 and came home with its first of many awards: the Audience Choice Award for Music on Screen Feature. The documentary continues its film festival run in the U.S. and Europe.

A special in-person screening of Goddess of Slide will be held at the Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema in Toronto (506 Bloor St West) on Sunday, March 9 at 12:30PM. Director Alfonso Maiorana will be present for a Q&A immediately following the screening.

Goddess of Slide is produced by Alfonso Maiorana and Agata De Santis, with support from the Canada Media Fund, the Quebec Film and Television Tax Credit, The Canadian Film or Video Production Tax Credit, documentary Channel, the Rogers Documentary Fund and the Hot Docs-Slaight Family Fund.

5 Surprising Facts About U2’s “The Joshua Tree”

Before The Joshua Tree, U2 was a great band. After it, they were icons. The 1987 album turned them into global superstars, propelled by anthems like With or Without You, I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For, and Where the Streets Have No Name. But beyond the Grammy wins, multi-platinum status, and timeless hits, The Joshua Tree is an album with a history as vast as the desert it pays tribute to. Here are five fascinating facts you may not know about this legendary record.

1. The Song That Almost Got Erased
Every band has that song—the one that takes forever to get right. For U2, it was Where the Streets Have No Name. The track’s complex time signature shifts made it a nightmare to record, with producers spending weeks trying to nail the right take. Frustrated, Brian Eno actually attempted to erase the song’s tapes, believing it would be easier to start from scratch than to keep fixing a mess. An engineer physically stopped him, and U2 went on to create one of the most transcendent album openers of all time.

2. The Influence of American Literature and Politics
Bono wasn’t just inspired by rock and roll—he was devouring American literature in the mid-1980s. Works by Norman Mailer, Flannery O’Connor, and Raymond Carver deeply influenced The Joshua Tree’s lyrics, shaping its themes of moral decay, political turmoil, and spiritual searching. Bono’s humanitarian visits to Central America during the recording sessions also played a crucial role, inspiring Bullet the Blue Sky and Mothers of the Disappeared, both of which critique U.S. foreign policy in El Salvador and Nicaragua.

3. The Accidental Album Cover That Became Iconic
You can’t talk about The Joshua Tree without mentioning its evocative cover art. While traveling through the Mojave Desert, photographer Anton Corbijn stumbled upon a lone Joshua tree near Darwin, California. The band, captivated by its stark beauty and biblical symbolism, took several photos with the tree—and suddenly, the album had its title. Today, U2 fans still make pilgrimages to the site, even though the actual tree fell over in 2000.

4. The Song U2 Almost Regretted Leaving Off
If you’ve ever wondered why The Sweetest Thing wasn’t on The Joshua Tree, you’re not alone. The song was written by Bono as an apology to his wife, Ali, for missing her birthday due to studio sessions. While it was released as a B-side, the band later admitted they regretted not including it on the album. The song became a hit in 1998 when U2 re-recorded it for their Best of 1980-1990 compilation, proving it had the staying power of any Joshua Tree-era classic.

5. The Album Was Almost a Double LP
U2 recorded around 30 songs during The Joshua Tree sessions, enough for a double album. Bono wanted to release a two-part record—one side focusing on roots-inspired music and another exploring ambient, experimental sounds. Producer Daniel Lanois and Brian Eno convinced the band to trim the tracklist to 11 songs, but the leftover material later surfaced on Rattle and Hum and The Joshua Tree’s 20th-anniversary reissue, giving fans a glimpse of what could have been.

The Joshua Tree redefined U2 – and rock music. From its spiritual themes to its panoramic soundscapes, it’s the sound of a band pushing beyond their limits, capturing the grandeur and contradictions of America, and delivering an album that still echoes across stadiums, deserts, and road trips decades later. Some records are just albums. The Joshua Tree is a journey.

5 Surprising Facts About Fugees’ “The Score”

Before The Score, the Fugees were underdogs. After it, they were global icons. It’s the album that gave us Killing Me Softly, Fu-Gee-La, and Ready or Not, but behind the chart-topping hits and platinum certifications, there’s a story of struggle, improvisation, and genius. Let’s dive into five facts you may not know about this groundbreaking hip-hop masterpiece.

1. The Basement Studio That Built a Classic

Most legendary albums are made in million-dollar studios. The Score? It was born in a basement. The Fugees set up shop in Wyclef Jean’s uncle’s basement, which they called the Booga Basement, and recorded the album on a $135,000 advance. The setting wasn’t glamorous, but it gave the album its raw, organic energy. Wyclef described the process as “calm and unconscious,” with ideas flowing naturally rather than being forced. The basement became a melting pot of creativity, where live instrumentation met intricate sampling, crafting a sound that felt as fresh in 1996 as it does today.

2. The Song That Almost Didn’t Happen: “Ready or Not”

One of The Score’s most iconic tracks, Ready or Not, was almost stopped before it even hit the airwaves. The song heavily samples Enya’s Boadicea, but the Fugees didn’t clear it before release. Enya was prepared to sue—until she found out the Fugees weren’t gangsta rappers. She reconsidered and let them use it, making it one of the most famous accidental collaborations in hip-hop history. Even more incredible? Lauryn Hill recorded the song’s chorus while crying in the studio, delivering a vocal so raw and emotional that the group decided to keep the first take as the final version.

3. How a Fat Joe Beat Sparked “Fu-Gee-La”

Producer Salaam Remi had created a beat intended for Fat Joe, but fate had other plans. During a session, Wyclef asked him to play “the Fat Joe beat,” and as soon as he did, Clef jumped in with the first verse of Fu-Gee-La. The track came together spontaneously, setting the tone for the entire album. While The Score would go on to incorporate more live instrumentation, Fu-Gee-La remained a perfect fusion of sampled melodies and gritty rap energy. The song became their highest-charting U.S. single and later inspired The Weeknd’s Sidewalks and Jay-Z’s Moonlight.

4. The Expensive Music Video That Changed Hip-Hop

At the time, hip-hop videos were often straightforward, but the Fugees changed the game with Ready or Not. Directed by Marcus Nispel, the video had a reported budget of $1.3 million—making it one of the most expensive rap videos of the era. Set against cinematic, action-packed visuals, it pushed the boundaries of what a hip-hop video could be. Years later, the influence of its high-production storytelling can be seen in artists like Kendrick Lamar, Beyoncé, and Travis Scott.

5. The Secret Marley Connection on “No Woman, No Cry”

The Score featured a moving cover of Bob Marley’s No Woman, No Cry, but what many fans don’t realize is that it had a direct Marley family connection. The song features uncredited background vocals by Marley’s children, Stephen and Sharon Marley, along with reggae singer Pam Hall. Their contributions gave the track an added layer of authenticity, paying tribute to Marley’s legacy while fitting seamlessly into the Fugees’ world of genre-blending innovation.

The Score expanded the sonic possibilities of hip-hop, blending reggae, soul, and live instrumentation while maintaining a socially conscious narrative. The Fugees took a DIY basement setup and turned it into one of the greatest hip-hop albums of all time—one that still sells and sounds great on the radio nearly three decades later.

Craig Finn has announced the release of his eagerly awaited new album, Always Been, arriving via Tamarac Recordings/Thirty Tigers on Friday, April 4. Pre-orders and pre-saves are available now. Produced by GRAMMY Award-winner Adam Granduciel (The War On Drugs) at his studio in Burbank, CA and mixed by 3x GRAMMY® Award-winning engineer Jonathan Low (Taylor Swift, The National, Hurray For The Riff Raff), the collection features musical performances by Granduciel and other members of The War on Drugs, as well as guest vocals by Kathleen Edwards and Sam Fender. Always Been – which marks the sixth LP in a solo discography that sits alongside Finn’s work as frontman and vocalist of The Hold Steady – is heralded by today’s premiere of the new single, “People of Substance,” available everywhere now.

“I believe this to be the most narrative record I have made,” says Craig Finn. “Most songs concern a protagonist who pursued a career as a clergyman despite a lack of faith. The record tells the story of his rise and fall and redemption, while also filling out the details of his travels and the world in which he lives. I am very proud of what we made, I hope you enjoy.”

Craig Finn is a Minnesota-bred singer/songwriter based in New York City, best known as the singer of The Hold Steady. Finn spent the ‘90’s leading Minneapolis indie band Lifter Puller, which released three albums and an EP. After relocating to New York, he joined with Lifter Puller member Tad Kubler to form The Hold Steady in 2003. The Hold Steady quickly achieved critical acclaim and a worldwide fanbase with their unique pairing of dense lyrical narratives with big rock guitars. The Hold Steady’s ninth album, The Price Of Progress, was released in March 2023, commemorating the band’s 20th anniversary.

Finn will celebrate Always Been on a wide-ranging US tour as special guest supporting Bob Mould from April 1 at San Diego, CA’s Music Box through Milwaukee, WI’s Turner Hall.
