Dave Stewart Pays Tribute to Bob Dylan With ‘Dave Does Dylan’ Limited-Edition Record Store Day Vinyl Release

0

DAVE STEWART — the highly acclaimed Rock & Roll Hall of Famer, Songwriter Hall of Famer, Eurythmics co-founder, producer and renowned songwriter — has announced DAVE DOES DYLAN. Set as a limited-edition vinyl release for Record Store Day, the 14-song homage to Bob Dylan will be available at indie record stores on Saturday, April 12 via Surfdog Records.

The spirit and sonic foundation of DAVE DOES DYLAN is built with live takes, pure and unedited. Featuring just Dave Stewart on vocals and guitars recorded in one take, the album finds him performing inspired renditions of Dylan’s songs — all of which he has adored since an early age.

DAVE STEWART is also set to tape an episode of “Recorded Live at Analog” on March 22 at Analog inside The Hutton Hotel in Nashville. He’ll perform songs from DAVE DOES DYLAN with the addition of strings, pedal steel guitar, and keys. The show will air on PBS in July (exact date TBA). Tickets to attend the taping are available here.

BOB DYLAN HAS SAID: “Captain Dave is a dreamer and a fearless innovator, a visionary of high order, very delicately tractable on the surface but beneath that, he’s a slamming, thumping, battering ram, very mystical but rational and sensitive when it comes to the hot irons of art forms. An explosive musician, deft guitar player, innately recognizes the genius in other people and puts it into play without being manipulative. With him, there’s mercifully no reality to yesterday. He is incredibly gracious and soulful, can command the ship and steer the course, dragger, trawler or man of war, Captain Dave.”

DAVE STEWART SHARES: “When I was first learning the guitar, I was about 14 or 15 years old — which would’ve been like 1964 or ’65. I was insistent on getting into folk clubs, but I looked about 12 years old, so they kept me out for a while. Then one chap, Mick Elliot, took pity and allowed me to play at The George & Dragon which became the center of the folk music scene in my hometown, Sunderland N.E. England, in the 1960’s. It was like stepping into a sacred room where visionaries and rebels converged — actually, it was simply a room upstairs in a pub full of older folk singers, beer, whisky and cigarette smoke everywhere. I was allowed to sing two songs, so I would play Bob Dylan songs from his albums that my brother had left behind when he went to college.

The audience was always a bit shocked that this kid, who looked so young, was singing these lyrics — especially in that kind of folk club. It was mostly old folk music that was being played from the local area about the coal mines and about the shipyards, which I loved too…and Dylan would have loved also. I started to sing and play these Dylan songs anywhere I could; in other folk clubs, even on the street all over the north east of England. From then on, I got every Bob Dylan album — and still do to this day — on Vinyl and in every possible variation.

One day in 1985, I received a phone call from Bob Dylan while I was in the studio in Los Angeles. At first, I thought it was my friend joking when the receptionist said ‘Bob Dylan on the phone for you,’ but I could tell as soon as he spoke, it was Bob. We met up that night and we talked about everything; films, music, life, etc… and we ended up in a great Mexican place in South L.A.

He knew everybody and he said, ‘hey, why don’t we make a video tomorrow or the next day?’ It was already two in the morning, but I agreed and I helped make various videos with him during which we became great friends. Years later, I filmed “Blood In My Eyes,” which is a video I shot on two 8mm cameras — just the two of us walking around Camden town.

I’ve played on stage with Bob in London, L.A. and Tokyo, and I find conversations with him — whether on the phone or when we’re together — really relaxed and easy. As you can imagine, he is full of great observations and wisdom, all wrapped up in a poetic language. I’m so, so grateful for getting to know him personally and to now record this album of songs after years of singing them to friends and to myself. It’s been a long road and these lyrics and melodies have kept me company through the best and the worst of times. I hope my album can do the same for Dylan fans out there—who understand the mastery and the mystery Bob has bestowed on us, and still does to this day.”

Mumford & Sons Announce Intimate Live Shows Ahead of ‘Rushmere’ Album Release

0

Mumford & Sons make their eagerly awaited return to live stages next month, with the announcement of nine intimate live dates in Europe, the U.K., Australia and North America. It will be the band’s first string of headline live dates in the U.K. and Europe since 2018.

Last month, the British folk-rock band announced details of their new album, RUSHMERE, their first in seven years, for release on March 28 via Glassnote. The album’s stirring title-track can be heard HERE.

Ahead of the record’s release, Mumford & Sons head out to Europe in March for a series of small club shows in Amsterdam, Paris, and Berlin before returning to the U.K. The band then take a whistlestop trip to Sydney Opera House before finishing up with four North American shows in Los Angeles, Chicago, Toronto and Brooklyn.

Ticket information: Members of agora, the band’s fan community, will have priority access to tickets with availability for community members from Thursday, February 13. A limited number of remaining tickets will then be available through a general on-sale from 10:00am local time, Friday February 14.

Fans are advised to: sign up for agora and register their interest for the show they wish to attend before Monday, February 10, 23:59 (GMT). In order to make this as fair as possible, fans will only be able to register for one event – duplicate entries won’t be counted. Registration does not guarantee access, and not all entries will be selected.

Access to the ticket sale will be granted via unique codes. Fans will be notified and can sign in to find out whether they have access from Wednesday, February 12 at 6pm (local time to the event selected). Receiving a code does not guarantee that fans will receive tickets. Maximum order is 2 tickets.

Mumford & Sons have partnered with PLUS1 to support War Child. $1 from every ticket sold will help War Child to protect, educate, and stand up for the rights of children affected by war. https://www.warchild.org.uk/

Ahead of the live run, Mumford & Sons join forces with the likes of David Byrne, Jack White, Chris Martin and Lady Gaga to celebrate 50 years of Saturday Night Live as part of SNL: The Homecoming Concert at Radio City Hall, New York. The show will be streamed live via Peacock to U.S. viewers on February 14.

Of the band’s return, Rushmere is the spot where it all began for Mumford & Sons. The pond, located on Wimbledon Common in south-west London, is where Marcus Mumford, Ben Lovett, and Ted Dwane first hung out and imagined the initial idea of putting a band together. Rushmere was as familiar to them as the instruments they played, and is at the heart of their origin story.

RUSHMERE is the beginning for Mumford & Sons’ next phase, and it follows an intense period of creativity for the trio. The album was produced by nine-time Grammy winner Dave Cobb and recorded at RCA Studio A in Nashville, in Savannah, GA, and back in the U.K. at Marcus’ studio in Devon.

Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Celebrates 30 Years of Mandoki Soulmates With ‘A Memory of Our Future’

0

Continuing the international success of the Mandoki Soulmates’ latest album, A Memory Of Our Future, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Vice President Jason Hanley invited Leslie Mandoki to the Rock Hall to celebrate “30 Years Of Soulmates” in the motherland of rock music. “We are thrilled to welcome Leslie Mandoki to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame to commemorate 30 years of Mandoki Soulmates and their latest album, A Memory of Our Future,” Hanley said, and honored Mandoki’s oft-quoted maxim that “music is the greatest unifier,” especially in this “labyrinth of crises where the compass has seemingly been lost.”

This Thursday evening in the Theater of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland became one of those memorable magical moments: During an evening of stories, film and music, the audience was treated to a look behind the scenes in the new film Mandoki Soulmates Inside Sound, shown here for the first time. The legendary musicians in the Soulmates are seen recording in the studio and playing live on stage; we see what backstage life is like and learn about the nearly-lost art of creating an entire album using a completely analog process, from first note to final vinyl LP. The film was followed by a Q&A with Leslie Mandoki, a devotee and master of analogue recordings, which he views as a way to honor his fans, saying he insists on their quality to send “a handwritten love letter to our audience—not a text message.” In addition, many fascinating stories about playing with the Soulmates over 30 years were recounted, including tales of band and Rock Hall members Chaka Khan, and the late Jack Bruce and Jon Lord.

Mandoki expressed his very personal gratitude to the Rock Hall and the audience: “What an honor be here in the legendary Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and to present our new album A Memory Of Our Future here. My father was right when he told me on his deathbed ‘Don’t dream your life, live your dream.’ I was 15 years old, and that became my life’s motto.”

Leslie Mandoki’s own story begins with his escape from behind the Iron Curtain to pursue freedom of musical expression, which eventually led to his work as a producer for Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductees including Phil Collins, Chaka Khan, and Lionel Richie, as well as working in key roles with icons of rock music such as Eric Burdon, Jon Lord, Robin Gibb, and Peter Frampton, as well as Jennifer Rush und Bonnie Tyler, and ultimately to the founding of the Mandoki Soulmates band. This virtuosic meeting of musical minds has been rightly called a “band of bandleaders,” and Leslie has become known as the “Hungarian Quincy Jones,” dubbed thusly by Steve Lukather and Al Di Meola. Younger Soulmate, bassist Richard Bona, explains: “Leslie and Quincy have the same kind of essence to pull out forces and put them together to get to this result. So, it’s a wonderful gift he’s got.” The late, great Jack Bruce compared this ability to unite different characters in the band, both humanly and musically, with Duke Ellington.

In 1992, Ian Anderson, Jack Bruce and Al Di Meola became founding members of what, until then, was Leslie Mandoki’s project band, Mandoki Soulmates. Ian Anderson (Jethro Tull) describes Leslie as the “master chef in the kitchen, mixing all these exotic spices and mystical musical influences together. He is a great musician and it’s very rare that you get good musicians and good record producers in one person. He is the mastermind, we just turn up for work.” Over the years, Leslie has continued to bring new musicians into the fold, and the Soulmates have developed into a unique supergroup with 13 albums, several live DVDs, Blu-rays, and countless concerts worldwide. The result of all this was once summed up by Greg Lake (Emerson, Lake & Palmer) who simply described the Soulmates as “one of the best bands you will ever hear.”

Mandoki’s vision for the Soulmates band is to bring progressive jazz-rock back to sociopolitical relevance. For him, music has always been an expression of freedom. With intellectual, poetic lyrics, the band takes a stand on sociopolitical change. Even after more than 30 years, the Mandoki Soulmates prove that they are one of the most creative and committed bands of our time. A Memory Of Our Future impresses not only with its musical brilliance, but also with its profound messages that encourage and unite us in a challenging world. As Supertramp saxophonist and Mandoki Soulmates member John Helliwell tells it, Leslie is “a bona fide rock star who travels in the circles of presidents and prime ministers—Mikhail Gorbachev called Leslie ‘my old friend’ and told him that rock and roll was instrumental in tearing down what Churchill called the Iron Curtain. Leslie’s whole story, which he tells through his music, is about escaping oppression and standing up for freedom – and for this he was honored by Henry Kissinger“.

Mandoki explains: “In these trying times, when the bridge-builders in our society are missing or ineffective, we artists have a responsibility to respectfully, and with humility, give something back to the audience – for their decades of love, and for carrying us in their hands forward to this day.”

“Especially in New York, where I’ve recently spent much time, A Memory Of Our Future is getting traction with American media as one of the ‘most important albums of the year.’ At the Times Square billboard in New York City, our album cover beamed at me with the caption ‘Modern Day Masterpiece.’ The black swan cover image is an eye-catcher, and is prominently displayed in the trendy record stores in New York and London—and it literally shone like a light at the end of the tunnel for my Soulmate John Helliwell and me from the LED wall in London’s Waterloo Station. The euphoric reviews, especially from America, really touch me: I fled to the West through the Iron Curtain as a young musician almost 50 years ago, so this is a realization of a dream. As a teenager in the East, I was immensely proud of my seventh-generation tape copy of a copy of a copy (etc.) of a Jethro Tull album that I played (in mono) on my “Tesla” brand tape recorder. I dreamed that one day my own records would be presented in the legendary HMV flagship record store on London’s Oxford Street.” Soulmates founding member Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull says, looking back on Leslie Mandoki’s story, “Leslie often thinks of himself as a ‘refugee,’ escaping from something disagreeable and leaving the past behind. But I prefer to think of Leslie as one who arrives in a new place, with new resolve, new commitment, new optimism.”

As is customary at events like this at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, after the main event, Mandoki met the enthusiastic audience members, talking with them and signing CDs, LPs, and the 30 Years of Mandoki Soulmates Tour Book until late in the evening.

David Lynch’s Sonic Legacy: How His Cinematic Soundscapes Shaped Electronic and Industrial Music

0

David Lynch’s influence on electronic music is as profound as his impact on cinema. From the eerie industrial hum of Eraserhead to the dreamlike synthscapes of Twin Peaks, his collaborations with Angelo Badalamenti set new standards for atmospheric composition. His own albums, Crazy Clown Time (2011) and The Big Dream (2013), fused blues, dream pop, and surreal electronica, expanding his sonic legacy. Lynch’s experimental approach to sound design shaped ambient, industrial, and electronic music, inspiring artists like Trent Reznor, Moby, Flying Lotus, and Daniel Avery to explore the cinematic potential of sound

Sam Fender Named Record Store Day UK 2025 Ambassador, Announces Exclusive ‘Me and the Dog’ Vinyl Release

0

Record Store Day has always been a celebration of music’s physical presence—the joy of flipping through stacks, the thrill of discovering a hidden gem, and the tangible connection between artist and listener. This year, none other than Sam Fender steps up as the official ambassador for Record Store Day 2025, bringing his signature anthemic songwriting and deep-rooted love for independent record shops to the forefront.

For Fender, who cut his teeth in the music scene of Newcastle before skyrocketing to global fame, vinyl holds a special kind of magic. His upcoming third studio album, People Watching, is set to drop on February 21, but he’s got another treat lined up for fans and collectors alike: a special six-track EP titled Me and the Dog, available exclusively at independent record stores on Record Store Day, April 12.

This isn’t just any release—it’s a 12” vinyl that blends the new with the rare, giving fans a mix of fresh material and long-lost favorites that have never seen a proper vinyl pressing. With both A and B sides stacked with Fender’s signature brand of emotional, guitar-driven storytelling, Me and the Dog is bound to be one of this year’s most sought-after exclusives.

Me and the Dog showcases Fender’s ability to craft both expansive stadium-ready anthems and introspective, deeply personal songwriting. The tracklist includes:

Side A:

  • People Watching – A taste of his new era, leading the charge from his upcoming album.
  • Tyrants – A track that was previously only available on a limited, sold-out People Watching 7” vinyl, now resurrected for collectors.
  • Empty Spaces – A completely unreleased song, giving fans an unheard glimpse into Fender’s creative process.

Side B:

  • I’m Always On Stage – Another previously unreleased track, offering a deeper cut into Fender’s songwriting archives.
  • Me and the Dog – A fan favorite that was only available on the People Watching CD single, finally making its way onto vinyl.
  • People Watching – Live at The O2 Arena, London – A live version that captures the raw energy of Fender’s performances, immortalized in wax for the first time.

Fender’s appointment as Record Store Day ambassador is a recognition of his deep connection to the culture of independent record stores and the role they’ve played in shaping his music. In an era of streaming, where accessibility often trumps physicality, vinyl remains an art form, a deliberate act of listening.

By choosing Me and the Dog as his RSD exclusive, Fender is giving fans a tangible piece of his evolving artistry—something they can hold, spin, and cherish. It’s an artifact of music history, a nod to the power of independent shops, and a love letter to the very places where many artists (including Fender himself) first discovered their passion.

Come April 12, expect long lines, buzzing excitement, and a mad dash to get hands on this exclusive release. After all, Record Store Day is about more than just the music—it’s about community, discovery, and the artists who remind us why vinyl will always have a place in our hearts.

Multifaceted Harpist Ashley Jackson Announces Label Debut Album ‘Take Me to the Water’ Set for Release on March 21

0

Decca Records, US is honored to announce the signing of award-winning harpist, Ashley Jackson, whose evocative artistry fuses traditional classical music with the rich heritage of Black spirituality.  Ashley’s label debut album, Take Me To The Water, will launch globally on March 21, with the first two tracks, “Deep River Pt. 1” and “Deep River Pt. 2” available now across all digital service providers. Pre-order the album and listen to the tracks here.

Take Me to the Water is a masterful exploration of the transformative and spiritual power of water, featuring Jackson’s unique interpretations of iconic works by Margaret Bonds, Alice Coltrane, Claude Debussy, and Samuel Coleridge-Taylor. Through this deeply personal and creative project, Jackson takes listeners on a musical journey that connects cultural heritage, spiritual reflection, and universal themes of renewal and freedom.

“Water is celebrated in lots of different cultures, but, despite that, you find recurring themes in those celebrations,” Jackson shares. “So I wanted to hone in on those ideas—ideals—such as love and rebirth and hope.”

In “Deep River,” originally adapted by composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor in 1905 – through her harp’s fluid, celestial tones, Jackson breathes new life into this iconic spiritual. “In playing ‘Deep River,’ I’m transported to a place where I can access that kind of cultural memory,” Jackson explains. “Just imagining my ancestors singing that, and what the words would have meant.  So as to tell their oppressors that they’re singing about one thing, but really, they’re communicating something else. Tapping into that ingenuity is so humbling.”

Take Me to the Water not only celebrates music’s ability to connect cultures and histories but also raises awareness of global water inequities, with 2.2 billion people still lacking access to safe water today. This dual focus amplifies Jackson’s belief in music’s power to inspire and heal.

With Take Me to the Water, Ashley Jackson establishes herself as a bold and visionary voice in and beyond classical music, elevating the harp as an instrument of deep emotional resonance and limitless possibilities. The album promises to be a replenishing and immersive experience, creating a sonic experience that is both grounded in history and forward-looking.

Gabríel Ólafs Announces New Album ‘Polar’ and Narrated Companion Album ‘Polar: Traveler’s Log’ Releasing on February 28

0

Today, accomplished Icelandic composer, Gabríel Ólafs, announces his sixth studio album, Polar, and the album’s narrated story-telling companion, Polar: Traveler’s Log. Both albums will be released on February 28 via Decca Records US. The unforgettable world of Polar is an imaginary place Gabríel Ólafs has been dreaming about for years and was finally able to bring to life through his music.

Listen to the 2-track single, “Whale Overture” here, watch the accompanying music video here, and the official “Polar: Building A World” EPK here.

Imagine a planet covered in ice, snow, and tundra, its mountains so vast they are visible from space. Then imagine traveling alone around its incredible landscape. You hear the haunting song of whales but find no human life. Apart from that are the traces of a mysterious lost civilization, which has left behind only frozen monolithic pyramids. This is the world of Polar.

Discovering the right palette of sounds to evoke Polar’s icy world was key. Ólafs knew the Reykjavík  Orkestra, which he co-founded several years ago, and conductor Viktor Orri Árnason were the right musicians for the job.

“They are able to capture a very cold but still emotional, iconic Icelandic string sound, which I wanted,” says Ólafs. “No one does it better than them.” To this, he’s added the king of instruments: the organ. “It very much captures this futuristic but also very ancient sound, which I think is very Polar.”

Ólafs uses the distinctive element of Whalesong throughout the album, in part because of his childhood fascination with the water-loving mammal often seen on the frozen Icelandic shores. The young composer, however, did not want to sample actual whale calls, and instead used the sounds of various instruments, including the cello, lap steel, and pedal steel guitars.

For this record, Ólafs wanted to think beyond the music to create a unique multimedia experience. Polar was shaped by his love and respect for “beautiful, complex” video monoliths – the mysterious pyramids left by a lost civilization – that Ólafs had imagined.

“I wanted to make a classical piece from that, and I melded it with my interest in video games as an art form. These days video games have beautiful artwork and complex stories. Music is created for a specific zone within a game. It creates the mood and you’re encapsulated by a sound world.”

By exploring what would happen if that principle was applied to classical music, Ólafs discovered a sound that touched on the meditation, beauty, and sadness of life and death.

To further help create that unique experience he was looking for, Ôlafs brought on Rebecca Roanhorse, the New York Times-bestselling speculative fiction author, to write the original story Polar: Traveler’s Log. The “Traveler’s Log” version of the album features a bespoke story, narrated by leading Icelandic actor Hera Hilmar, interwoven with Ólafs’ music.

Gabríel Ólafs ear for melodic musical storytelling and holistic creative vision set him apart as a true visionary of postmodern classical music. Polar is one of Ólafs most ambitious projects to date, creating a fantastical world where the sky’s the limit and new horizons are sure to be found.

INHALER release their eagerly awaited new album Open Wide via Polydor Records. Recorded at RAK Studios in London and produced by Grammy and Brit Award-winning Kid Harpoon, the Dublin quartet’s third album reinforces their status as the ultimate modern guitar band, a group for whom jubilant pop melodies, intricate grooves and rock’n’roll dynamism are kindred spirits rather than strangers. It arrives as bandmates Eli Hewson, Robert Keating, Ryan McMahon and Josh Jenkinson ready themselves for the first night of the UK leg of their Open Wide World Tour tonight in Leeds. The 11-date UK & Ireland tour includes two sold-out shows at London’s iconic Brixton Academy on 13th and 14th February. The band return to play their biggest ever headline show to date to a 20,000-capacity crowd at St Anne’s Park in Dublin on May 30th.

Featuring 13 songs, including previously unveiled cuts ‘Your House’, ‘Open Wide’, ‘A Question Of You’ and ‘Billy (Yeah Yeah Yeah)’, Open Wide showcases INHALER – who formed as childhood friends – thrillingly coming into their own and taking their sound in audacious new directions.

It hones the sweeping, euphoric singalongs of their first two albums It Won’t Always Be Like This and Cuts & Bruises into something more fully formed, a record you can lose yourself in and one where every track feels like it could be a big single. Sonically, it’s an album where the band’s love of T.Rex, early MGMT, Prince, Depeche Mode and more nestles alongside the indie and garage-rock influences of their teens, and is a majestic celebration of who Inhaler are and everything they’ve done to get to this point.

Working with Brit and Grammy-winning producer Kid Harpoon, the band learned to fully trust their own artistic vision. It’s a record that feels confident and sure of itself, one that never feels like it’s trying to be bombastic for the sake of it. Instead, there’s a restraint here, like in the way yearning opener Eddie In The Darkness begins like you’ve walked in on the band playing in a room already instead of hitting you over the head from the off, or the way the propulsive 80s pop grooves of Billy (Yeah Yeah Yeah) constantly feels tightly-wound and loose at the same time, as if its gently gliding by. It’s the sound of a band in full control. There’s playful glam-pop (Your House), stomping indie epics (A Question Of You), wiry, post-punk-influenced contemplatives (Even Though), adventurous art-rock (X-Ray), swaying ballads (Again, Still Young) and rattling, melodic garage-y missives (Little Things), all revolving around the immense, panoramic rock of the title track (Open Wide), planted right in the middle of the album.

“The reason why we called the album Open Wide is because we’re looking for a new perspective on our music,” states Hewson. “With this album, we’re closer to what we’ve always envisioned,” he adds. “It feels like we’ve always been trying to make this record.”

Since their career launched in 2018, INHALER have been among the biggest new names in guitar music, achieving commercial success with roaring chart positions. To date, they’ve sold over a quarter of a million records globally and garnered 500 million streams. Their debut album, It Won’t Always Be Like This, hit #1 in the UK and Ireland, while their 2023 follow-up, Cuts & Bruises, topped the Irish charts and reached #2 in the UK. To maintain this momentum, have spent the past few whirlwind years on a relentless world tour, supporting acts like Arctic Monkeys, Pearl Jam, Harry Styles, and Kings of Leon, as well as headlining their own shows, including a sold out 13,000-capacity homecoming show at the Dublin 3Arena last year.
