Legendary Blues Rock Keyboardist Barry Goldberg Dies at 83, Leaving Behind a Legacy of Iconic Collaborations

Blues rock great Barry Goldberg has died in hospice care after a ten-year struggle with non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Gail Goldberg, his wife of 53 years, and son Aram were at this bedside The noted keyboard player, band leader, session man and songwriter was 83. Most recently he headed the Chicago Blues Reunion, a band that over the past two decades toured and recorded with an array of seasoned blues practitioners including Sam Lay, Nick Gravenites, Harvey Mandel, Corky Siegel, Tracy Nelson, Charlie Musselwhite, Jimmy Vivino, Marcy Levy and others.

Barry Goldberg, the centerpiece of the documentary film Born in Chicago, was in fact born in the Windy City on Christmas Day,1941. His mother Nettie Goldberg, née Nettie Becker, was a barrelhouse piano player in her own right and a veteran of the Jewish theater circuit. His father Frank Goldberg was one of eight children born to Ukrainian-Jewish immigrant parents, including US Supreme Court Justice Arthur Goldberg.

While still in high school, Goldberg befriended guitarist Mike Bloomfield; the two often ventured from Chicago’s northern suburbs to the inner city night clubs on the South Side where they, along with Paul Butterfield, Musselwhite and Siegel, became acquainted with, and were ultimately mentored by such first-generation blues legends as Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, Buddy Guy, Otis Rush, the aforementioned Sam Lay and others. Goldberg played live with the Paul Butterfield Blues Band (which included his friend Bloomfield) when they backed Bob Dylan at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival; by “going electric,” this performance launched the folk rock revolution, as depicted in the hit film A Complete Unknown.

Goldberg’s relationship with Dylan transcended that historic moment as they would later go on to jam with Doug Sahm and The Band in Woodstock, NY. When Goldberg was on the cusp of signing a contract with RCA to record a solo album in 1973, Dylan told him to hold off until he spoke to Jerry Wexler at Atlantic. Dylan biographer Robert Shelton chronicled Dylan’s side of the ensuing conversation: “I’m on the phone with Jerry Wexler from Atlantic Records and I think we can work out a deal but I’m gonna have to produce you; that’s cool, isn’t it?” Barry’s response: “That’s really cool.” Barry Goldberg (1974) would become the only album Bob Dylan ever produced for another artist. When Wexler asked where the album should be made, Goldberg suggested Muscle Shoals, AL as that was where he had cut some of the fabled collaborations with Bloomfield that became the Two Jews Blues album in 1969 (which included Duane Allman). Some of the same players would also end up backing him on the Dylan/Wexler-produced project. Dylan, who had never been to Muscle Shoals, drove from California in his van with the ensuing sessions spanning five days and nights in August of 1973. Years later, Goldberg returned the favor when he produced Bob Dylan’s version of “People Get Ready” for Flashback , the feature film starring Dennis Hopper and Kiefer Sutherland for which he served as music supervisor.

As a session player, Goldberg contributed organ to Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels’ 1966 Top 5 hit “Devil With A Blue Dress On & Good Golly Miss Molly” and later worked on albums by Leonard Cohen, Ramones and Flying Burrito Brothers, among many others. His bond with Bloomfield continued as they formed The Electric Flag with Buddy Miles and Harvey Brooks. This band recorded A Long Time Comin’, a groundbreaking album for Columbia in 1968, and well as the soundtrack to The Trip, starring Peter Fonda.

Goldberg was the co-writer, with Gerry Goffin, of hits including “It’s Not The Spotlight” (Bobby Blue Bland, Rod Stewart) and “I’ve Got To Use My Imagination” (a #1 R&B record for Gladys Knight & The Pips; also recorded by Joe Cocker). Goldberg also co-produced with Saul Davis two award-winning Percy Sledge albums. He was co-writer with Gram Parsons of “Do You Know How It Feels,” recorded by the Flying Burrito Brothers. More recently, he toured and recorded with The Rides, a musical partnership with Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Stephen Stills. Their two albums, released in 2013 and 2016, both hit #1 on Billboard’s Blues Albums chart.

After a tumultuous high school experience Goldberg enlisted in the Marines, completing basic training at Parris Island, SC. In 1970, he met Gail Fliashnick at the Chelsea Hotel in New York after Michael Bloomfield set them up. Within two weeks, they were engaged and were wed on May 15, 1971. She is a designer and artist from New York, who studied in Rome and at Temple University in Philadelphia. Their son Aram is a Los Angeles-based management executive.

Sunny War returns with Armageddon in a Summer Dress on February 21, 2025, via New West Records. The 11-song set was produced by Andrija Tokic (Alabama Shakes, Hurray for the Riff Raff) and features guest appearances by Valerie June, John Doe of X, Steve Ignorant of Crass, Tré Burt, Jack Lawrence of the Raconteurs, Kyshona Armstrong, John James Tourville of the Deslondes, and more. Armageddon in a Summer Dress follows 2023’s Anarchist Gospel, which appeared on numerous “Best of the Year” lists including Rolling Stone, NPR Music, Uncut, Paste Magazine, No Depression, Flood Magazine, Magnet Magazine, The Bitter Southerner, and more. NPR Music called Anarchist Gospel “thrilling,” Mojo called it “exceptional” and a “significant breakthrough,” while Bandcamp called it a “stellar work of art.” Pitchfork called it “emotionally resonant and curiously hopeful,” while Rolling Stone said, “It all amounts to a powerful statement from a singer-songwriter poised to become one of the year’s most vital voices in roots music.” Anarchist Gospel’s success also took Sunny War on the road appearing alongside Mitski, Iron & Wine, John Doe & Exene Cervenka of X, Bonnie Raitt, and more.

Today, Paste Magazine premiered the new single “Cry Baby” which features Valerie June. She says, “I’ve opened for Valerie June quite a bit and years ago I asked her if I could try and write a song for her. Somewhere in Portland, OR, I wrote ‘Cry Baby’ with Valerie in mind. Sunny War previously shared the video for the album’s first single, “Walking Contradiction,” a duet with the legendary Steve Ignorant of Crass. Recruiting Steve to sing on the anarcho-punk anthem was a full-circle moment for Sunny, who counts Crass among her all-time favorite bands. She wrote the song especially for him: with its snaking blues melody, ominous organ chords, and her guitar tagging the walls of city hall, the song is a smart, scowling depiction of late-capitalist America, where even the best of us are compromised by a fundamentally evil system. Their voices suggest a wild chemistry between them, possibly because Sunny’s been singing along with Steve for decades. She says, “He’s my hero for life. When I started listening to Crass, it changed everything about how I thought about everything.” Steve Ignorant says, “It’s always an honour to collaborate with someone you respect and Sunny War is no exception. She is the younger voice, taking up the torch of hope in this dark world. The minute I heard the song I knew it would work and recording it was an incredibly emotional experience. The lyrics are now in my head for good – which is not a bad thing, and who knows – maybe one day we’ll get the chance to perform it together live.” She also previously shared the album highlight “Scornful Heart,” featuring Tré Burt.

Following the release of her breakthrough Anarchist Gospel, Sunny moved into her late father’s house in Chattanooga. She thought the place was haunted. “I spent the winter seeing things and hearing things,” she says. “The house is 100 years old, and I was in there by myself. I could hear people walking around and talking, but when I jumped out of bed with my machete, there was nobody there. I assumed it was my dad, and I started writing about the ghosts that I was living with.” Sunny’s house wasn’t haunted, at least not the way she initially suspected. “Something broke and I had to fix it, so I called the gas company even though I didn’t have the money. The guy discovered major gas leaks all over the house. I thought I was losing my mind, but I was just hallucinating from the gas. After I got that fixed, I never saw or heard another ghost.” That’s not to say they weren’t there, just that she could no longer detect them. Armageddon is rooted in the disorientation of those hallucinations. In songs that are deeply incisive and keenly imaginative, Sunny ponders the act of crossing boundaries—between worlds, between musical genres, summoning the ghosts of the people she lost, the people she once was, and the people she was not allowed to be.

Off the road and back at her not-haunted house, Sunny did her best to stay busy, lest she lapse back into the alcohol and drug abuse that almost killed her years ago. “If I’m not touring, I’m either going to play music all day or I’m going to get drunk. It’s really one or the other. I’m just obsessively trying to work on something so that I’m making healthier decisions that day.” She spent long days recording elaborate demos, chasing ideas and assembling whole songs from the ground up. The intense demo process allowed her to experiment with new textures, and she found herself gravitating away from her trusty acoustic guitar for an electric. “Touring behind Anarchist Gospel made me want to make a bigger-sounding record and have a whole band rather than just playing solo acoustic or with a three piece. I wanted to try stuff out of my comfort zone and try and have more fun playing. I definitely wanted to make this album for a badass five-piece band.”

Armageddon in a Summer Dress reveals an artist further refining her vibrant mix of punk and roots. “To me it’s the same kind of music. If you’re into punk for the lyrics and the message, there’s definitely a lot of old-time music that has that spirit. Folk used to be very anti-establishment. Pete Seeger, union songs, Woody Guthrie—that’s punk rock shit. It’s all about being an outsider.” What kind of person would Sunny be had she never heard Crass? Or Robert Johnson? Or any of her heroes? Those mirror-universe Sunnys are just some of the ghosts that haunts Armageddon in a Summer Dress: all of those different selves would have led different lives. These songs tally up everything that’s lost as you grow up and grow old, all of those small occurrences that turn out to be pivotal. As dire as some of these songs may be, they’re also righteous and therefore joyous in their exhortations to live on your own terms, to fight injustice wherever you see it, and to always reach for new ways to express yourself.”

Rock legend Billy Idol is returning to the road for It’s a Nice Day To…Tour Again! Fellow superstar Joan Jett & the Blackhearts will join Idol on all shows. Produced by Live Nation, the run of arenas and amphitheatres kicks off at the Talking Stick Resort Amphitheatre in Phoenix on April 30 and includes stops at an array of storied venues includingNew York’s Madison Square Garden, Los Angeles’ Kia Forum, the Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado, Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, MD and more. Artist pre-sales begin Wednesday, January 22 at 9 a.m. local time, with local presales beginning Thursday, January 23at 9 a.m. local time. Five dollars from every ticket sold to the Los Angeles show at Kia Forum will be donated to the American Red Cross to support Southern California Wildfire Relief. Billly Idol will also personally match this donation.

Last year, Idol celebrated the 40th Anniversary of his landmark sophomore album Rebel Yell with a Deluxe Expanded Edition out now via Capitol/UMe. He also appeared at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inducting Ozzy Osbourne alongside Jack Black, Jelly Roll, Tool frontperson Maynard James Keenan and more.

Idol also recently released the concert film Billy Idol: State Line, a Vertigo Live concert film documenting his April 2023 show at the famed Hoover Dam—the first-ever concert performed at the location. The film highlights the history and significance of the Hoover Dam and includes two unique sets of Billy Idol’s iconic hits: a full band concert at sunset with special guests that electrified and illuminated the surrounding Black Canyon, and an acoustic duo set on the roof of the powerhouse at the foot of Hoover Dam straddling the Colorado River, directly on the Nevada/Arizona state line.

For 46 years, Billy Idol has been one of the definitive faces and voices of rock’n’roll. Between 1977 and 1981, Idol released three albums with Generation X as their camera-ready frontman. In 1982, he embarked on a transatlantic/trans-genre solo career that integrated the bold and simple lines of punk and rock’n’roll decadence. After forming her band the Blackhearts in 1979, with whom Jett has become a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, she has had eight platinum and gold albums and nine Top 40 singles, including the classics “Bad Reputation,” “I Love Rock ‘N’ Roll,” “I Hate Myself For Loving You,” and “Crimson and Clover.” With a career that has spanned music, film, television, Broadway, and humanitarianism, Joan Jett remains a potent force and inspiration to generations of fans worldwide. As a producer, she has overseen seminal albums by Bikini Kill, and the Germs’ LA punk masterpiece GI. Jett and Kenny Laguna (her longtime producer and music partner) co-founded Blackheart Records from the trunk of Kenny’s Cadillac after rejections from no less than 23 labels. 40 years later, Blackheart is a thriving entertainment company producing music, film and television, and continues to champion emerging bands.
