Jason Isbell Announces New Acoustic Solo Album ‘Foxes in the Snow’ And 2025 Tour

0

Jason Isbell is set to release Foxes in the Snow, his first solo acoustic album, on March 7 via Southeastern Records. This marks the Grammy-winning artist’s first album released under his name alone since 2015’s Something More Than Free. The album follows 2023’s Weathervanes, recorded with his band, The 400 Unit.

The lead single, “Bury Me,” is available now, offering fans an early glimpse into what promises to be a reflective and intimate collection. You can listen to the track below.

Foxes in the Snow was recorded over five days in October 2024 at New York City’s iconic Electric Lady Studios. The album’s minimalist approach shines through in its creation: Isbell used a single instrument—a 1940 Martin 0-17 acoustic guitar. The stripped-down production highlights his storytelling prowess and virtuosic musicianship, earning early praise for its raw, acoustic sound.

This upcoming release will be Isbell’s 10th album since launching his solo career with Sirens of the Ditch in 2007, following his departure from the Drive-By Truckers. Isbell had joined the southern rock band in 2003 at the age of 24, contributing to albums like Decoration Day. His solo career reached new heights with 2013’s Southeastern, a deeply personal record that solidified his reputation as one of the most acclaimed songwriters of his generation.

To promote Foxes in the Snow, Isbell will embark on his solo An Intimate Evening with Jason Isbell tour. The tour begins on February 15 in Chicago and includes stops in cities like Los Angeles, Austin, Nashville, and Detroit. The schedule also includes two separate stints in Europe, starting with a sold-out UK and European leg on February 2 in Berlin, continuing through September 7.

In addition to his celebrated music career, Isbell has ventured into acting. He recently appeared in Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon and will star in RZA’s upcoming drama One Spoon of Chocolate. These accomplishments further underscore his versatility as an artist.

Fans of Isbell’s work can look forward to Foxes in the Snow as an opportunity to experience his artistry in its purest form. With its focus on acoustic arrangements and storytelling, the album is poised to stand out in his already remarkable discography.

C“Ringo & Friends at the Ryman” Two-Hour Special Featuring Ringo Starr and Country Music’s Biggest Stars Set To Air This Spring

0

CBS presents RINGO & FRIENDS AT THE RYMAN, a two-hour special celebrating the music and legacy of Ringo Starr through the lens of country music, airing this spring on the CBS Television Network, and streaming on Paramount+ in the U.S. (live and on-demand for Paramount+ with SHOWTIME subscribers, or on-demand for Paramount+ Essential subscribers the day after the special airs)*.

Taping on Jan. 14 and Jan. 15 at the historic Ryman Auditorium – the “Mother Church of Country Music” – this once-in-a-lifetime event will feature exclusive performances of Ringo’s solo hits, Beatles classics and tracks from his recently released country album Look Up, produced and co-written by T Bone Burnett.

Proceeds from a one-time, all-star performance at The Ryman of “With a Little Help from My Friends” will support the American Red Cross and those impacted by the California wildfires.

An all-star lineup of some of music’s hottest names will join Ringo onstage, including Sheryl Crow, Rodney Crowell, Mickey Guyton, Emmylou Harris, Sarah Jarosz, Jamey Johnson, Brenda Lee, Larkin Poe, Billy Strings, Molly Tuttle, The War And Treaty, Jack White and more. Together, they will reimagine some of music’s most iconic songs, such as “Boys,” “Act Naturally,” “With a Little Help from My Friends,” “Yellow Submarine,” “Don’t Pass Me By” and “It Don’t Come Easy,” blending classic rock with a country twist. Additional guest artists will be announced at a later date.

“It is always a thrill to play the Ryman and this time we are going country!” said Ringo. “T Bone has put together a great show. I’m excited to hear my songs done in a country vein and to play with this incredible group of musicians. It will be two nights of peace, love and country music.”

“There is not a single person in the world who has generated more goodwill than Ringo Starr, and I write this without hyperbole,” said Burnett. “This Jan. 14 and 15, an extraordinary group of artists is coming together to help demonstrate that at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tenn. Ringo has been singing and playing country music since before he joined The Beatles, and many, if not most, of his recordings with that band were country songs – “Matchbox,” “Honey Don’t,” “Act Naturally,” “What Goes On?,” “Don’t Pass Me By” and even “Octopus’s Garden” is a country song. We don’t know which country, but a country song, nevertheless. Nashville is a town full of extraordinary musicians, and a killer band of some of Nashville’s most extraordinary musicians will accompany Ringo and the rest of the artists.”

“Ringo and his bandmates introduced me and countless others to timeless American rockabilly classics, reimagined with their unique Liverpudlian twist on Carl Perkins and many more,” said Toffler. “It’s an honor to produce this special with Ringo and T Bone, bringing together some of music’s finest who will undoubtedly play the hell out of Ringo’s songs, including some Beatles classics. I’m pumped for an unforgettable night at the Mother Church of Country Music, and it feels especially poetic to be airing on the same network that introduced the Beatles to America 61 years ago.”

In addition to the performances, the special will feature Ringo reflecting on country music’s influence on his life, The Beatles and his solo career. Guest artists will share their personal stories of Ringo’s impact on their music, offering fans a unique look at his legacy. Inspired by T Bone Burnett to explore a new musical chapter, Ringo showcases his extraordinary journey through a country music lens.

RINGO & FRIENDS AT THE RYMAN is produced by T Bone Burnett in collaboration with Van Toffler of Gunpowder & Sky. Michael Lohmann (“Nashville,” “Boston Legal” and “Patsy & Loretta”) will direct.

Throughout his career he has received nine GRAMMY Awards and has twice been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame – first as a Beatle and then as solo artist. Between 1970 and 2023, Ringo has released 20 solo studio records and 4 consecutive EP’s in 2020, 2021 and 2023.  He has acted in over 15 films, received an Academy Award, and has been nominated as an actor for an Emmy. Ringo has published 8 books; had a stint as a male fashion model, and that same year went behind the lens as the photographer for some Foo Fighters PR photos. Ringo is also a visual artist and has had numerous exhibitions of his work and his “Peace Sculpture” is on permanent display in the Beverly Hills Park. In 2008 Ringo began dedicating his July 7 birthday to promoting Peace and Love and the movement has grown to include events all over the planet and into the stars with support from NASA. In 2018, Ringo was knighted and in 2019 he celebrated 35 years of touring with his All Starr Bands. In 2022 Ringo received an honorary degree as a Doctor of Music from Berklee College of Music and earlier he was inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame with the Joe Chambers Musicians Legacy Award.

Throughout more than 50 years in music and entertainment, T Bone Burnett has earned an unparalleled reputation as an innovative artist, songwriter, producer, performer, film and concert producer, record company owner and artists’ advocate. He’s worked and collaborated with musicians spanning many genres, such as the aforementioned Bob Dylan, Elton John, Robert Plant, Alison Krauss, Ringo Starr, B.B. King, Tony Bennett, k.d. lang, Elvis Costello, Taylor Swift, Ryan Bingham, Steve Earle and Leon Russell. DAVE MUSTAINE and Family Combine Music, Culture, Travel, & Fine Wine with HOUSE OF MUSTAINE

0

Founding member and frontman of GRAMMY Award-winning and multi-Platinum selling metal group MEGADETH, Dave Mustaine, alongside his family—Pamela Mustaine (President), Electra Mustaine (VP / Sommelier), and Justis Mustaine—have co-founded the visionary wine brand HOUSE OF MUSTAINE which uniquely blends music, culture, and fine winemaking. Read a Q&A with PAMELA and ELECTRA about forming and running HOUSE OF MUSTAINE below.

From its inception as a passion project to its evolution into a global wine destination, HOUSE OF MUSTAINE combines the artistry of winemaking with a deep respect for tradition, sustainability, and innovation. The Nashville, TN-based company, with vineyards in Italy and California, blends ancient practices with modern innovation by using purist techniques to develop unique and limited-edition wines, while also continuing their endeavors abroad by developing exceptional vineyard sites in undiscovered regions across the globe.

Later this month, HOUSE OF MUSTAINE WINE CLUB will celebrate with two local events in Nashville, TN:

● January 30: Join Electra and Pamela for a Marche Wine Dinner at the award-winning signature Italian restaurant, Yolan which includes a sparkling wine welcome reception and a five-course Marche-inspired tasting menu, specially designed around a selection of exceptional wines from HOUSE OF MUSTAINE’s Marche collection.

● February 22: In collaboration with Edible Nashville and the Frist Art Museum’s “Farm to Table” experience, celebrate the intersection of art, food, and wine with a five-course meal crafted by Edible Nashville’s executive chef, Skylar Bush, and special guest chef, Margot McCormack of Margot Cafe & Bar, paired with HOUSE OF MUSTAINE wines. This unique experience celebrates the intersection of art, food, and wine.

Look forward to additional events throughout the year including dinners with Locust Nashville and Heirloom Fire in Richmond, MA, which will design seasonal menus with curated HOUSE OF MUSTAINE wines.

HOUSE OF MUSTAINE WINE CLUB members will also have private access to once-in-a-lifetime trips across the globe with monthly luxury travel experiences being offered throughout 2025 starting with a February adventure to Thailand. The six-day trek will adventure through northern Thailand, blending high-energy outdoor activities (i.e. zip-lining, elephant safaris, white-water rafting) with authentic cultural and local culinary experiences, stays in unique luxury accommodations. March will feature a trip to London, UK where guests will be taken on a Murder Mystery Train adventure and a culinary tour, along with a selection of the Mustaine’s favorite must-do’s and restaurants. April will offer a trip to Morocco which includes camel trekking, a Moroccan food experience, and a hot air balloon ride. Additional trips will transpire throughout the remainder of the year including destinations such as Italy, France, Kenya, Ireland, Tennessee, Iceland, and more. Further details on these events will be announced in the coming weeks/months.

HOUSE OF MUSTAINE began with the 2013 Symphony Interrupted Cabernet Sauvignon which was inspired by MEGADETH’s groundbreaking collaboration with the San Diego Symphony. The Mustaine family has since expanded their portfolio to include ten small-batch, limited-edition wines grown in their sustainable vineyards across the globe. Each wine is a celebration of authenticity and artistry, named after one of Dave’s iconic songs and stamped with the Mustaine family crest. Just as every song has a story through its lyrics and melody, so does every wine through its culture and craftmanship. Each bottle is a statement making it just as bold, uncompromising, and unforgettable as the rock’n’roll legacy it was founded on. HOUSE OF MUSTAINE offers a flexible, subscription-based wine club that includes access to exclusive events and curated luxury travel experiences, first dibs on new releases, special pricing and access to all wines, and customizable monthly, quarterly, or semi-annual shipments of their current offerings. Q&A WITH PAMELA & ELECTRA MUSTAINE

What inspired the creation of House of Mustaine, and how does it reflect your family’s legacy and passions?

PAMELA: “The creation of House of Mustaine was born from a desire to blend our passions for music, culture, and travel with the timeless artistry of winemaking. Just as Dave pioneered a genre with Megadeth, we wanted to pioneer something new in the world of wine. This journey was inspired by a love of discovering rare, lesser-known varietals and sharing those experiences with others. Our family has always pushed boundaries, whether in music or in life, and House of Mustaine is a reflection of that spirit: rebellious, innovative, and dedicated to excellence. It’s not just about wine; it’s about capturing moments, stories, and history in every bottle. House of Mustaine is the sequel to our family’s legacy.”

What has been the most challenging aspect of growing a new business?

ELECTRA: “As newcomers–or more so outsiders–in an industry steeped in tradition, we’ve faced challenges at every turn. Sometimes, we bite off more than we can chew—whether it’s launching a wine club, building a new headquarters, or unveiling a new Italian project all in the same year. But coming from the music industry, we’re used to spinning a lot of plates. We don’t necessarily think like a traditional multi-generational wine family does, but maybe that gives us the freedom to ask, ‘Can we do this? It’s never been done…great, let’s try!’ Balancing innovation with respect for tradition while maintaining premium quality and sustainability is a constant challenge, but one we embrace wholeheartedly. We think big, even when we’re small, and that’s the essence of House of Mustaine.

As women, can you explain some of the challenges and highlights of building a brand?

PAMELA: “Building a brand in a traditionally male-dominated industry has had its moments. Two blonde American women navigating the ins and outs of a foreign country can seem treacherous, but we’ve learned that being underestimated can be a superpower. Electra’s journey to becoming a sommelier (and one of the youngest females) was driven by a desire to add to that superpower in gaining knowledge, establishing credibility, and honoring the craft authentically. Our family name comes with a legacy of resilience, and we embrace that. We are innately disruptors. We face challenges head-on, take big risks, and believe that authenticity, hard work, and a willingness to break the mold will always pave the way. At House of Mustaine, we let our wines—and our actions—speak for us.”

Can you recount one or two of your most memorable trips on behalf of the company?

ELECTRA: “Our adventures are never without a bit of chaos and laughter. If anyone is versed in navigating the unknown, it’s us! There was the time we got padlocked into our hotel room or when our GPS led us straight into a riverbed of an ancient borgho. A recent one that stands out is running out of gas in the Sibillini Mountains while hosting club members during harvest. In Italy, time is fluid, and we were racing to make it to a horseback riding experience. Let’s just say we learned the hard way that gas stations are scarce in most mountain ranges, especially certain types of gas. Picture us pleading with locals in broken Italian for fuel while the sun ticked down—somehow, we always manage to find a way. These experiences, potentially catastrophic to most, have given us stories that reflect the adventurous, unpredictable spirit of House of Mustaine.”

Are there any wine regions you would like to explore?

ELECTRA: “Absolutely! We’re passionate about uncovering the world’s hidden gems. Regions like Croatia, Portugal, and Eastern Spain are calling to us. Our mission is to shine a spotlight on these lesser-known varietals while preserving their authenticity. Travel has always been our source of joy and inspiration. We thought, ‘How can we bottle this up and share it?’ Wine became the answer—a time capsule of culture, history, and memory. For us, the journey of discovery never ends.”

As a family, how does that dynamic affect the day-to-day running of the business? Have any lessons or values from Dave’s career in music influenced the business?

PAMELA: “We each play a vital role and lean on each other: I orchestrate the vision and business management, Electra drives operations and innovation, Justis provides strategic insight, and Dave is the storyteller and lever that moves the gears. Lessons from the music industry are woven into our fabric—never rely on goodwill alone, always verify, and know that no one will care more than you. In wine, as in music, it’s all about the full package: quality, authenticity, and connection. Working as a family means it’s in our DNA to support each other, take risks, and keep the show going. After all, stars aren’t just talents—they’re the complete experience.”

For someone new to wine, what would you recommend as a first choice from the line?

ELECTRA: “I’d recommend starting with ‘Holy Wars’ Marche Rosso (Montepulciano)—because why not dive right in with the best? This full-bodied Italian red is perfectly balanced and smooth, without the potentially intimidating grippy tannins of a Cabernet Sauvignon or Sangiovese. It’s a serious wine, yet somehow still inviting and rich with layers of dark fruit and subtle spices. For something lighter and more playful, ‘She-Wolf’ Marche Rosato is your go-to. This rosé is a crowd-pleaser, loved by both men and women alike for its harmonious blend of crisp citrus, vibrant wild fruit, delicate floral notes, and a silky finish. Whether you’re in the mood for bold or breezy, these wines would offer a perfect introduction to the House of Mustaine experience.”

Can you describe what your workday looks like?

ELECTRA: “I typically start my day the earliest, with a morning routine that sets the tone: reading, mindfulness, and a workout to kick things off. From there, it’s a whirlwind of handling social media, product development, and supporting the sales teams on the front lines. Depending on the season, you’ll find her in the vineyards, at tastings, or managing the winery.

My mom starts her day with a cup of coffee and a Zoom meeting with our Italian team, managing winery construction, approving product development details, or strategizing long-term goals for our properties.

Our calendar is sprinkled with wine and food events, giving us the chance to socialize and share our passion, which can turn into incredible experiences for our club members. At the end of the day, we come together for a family dinner where we recap, unwind, and—let’s be real—the work often continues because it’s ingrained in our DNA. When you love what you do, work rarely feels like work.”

As a mother and daughter, how do you separate work and family life?

PAMELA: “There isn’t exactly a clear separation. Our love for travel, food, wine, and culture was our lifestyle before we launched House of Mustaine. Now, our job is to curate that same experience for others, and it brings us so much joy. The business reflects who we are, so it feels natural. Family is everything to us. The hardest part is when certain meetings or events don’t allow us to bring all six of us along. Sometimes you must divide and conquer, as they say. We have a deep respect for family businesses that have kept the craft alive for generations. We’re in this together, and that blend of family and business is what makes House of Mustaine so special.”

What is your favorite wine?

ELECTRA: “Here’s a rare moment: we both agree! Our favorites are Vernaccia, Wanderlust Pecorino (white), and the Holy Wars Marche Rosso (red). It all depends on the occasion, but we particularly love the shock factor of our Vernaccia. Each wine has its perfect place and occasion, as we’ve gotten more into wine we’ve been able to get out of our comfort zone and appreciate wines in a more cultural way. I suppose the Italians taught us that! Choosing one is like picking a favorite song—it all depends on the mood.”

What role does each family member play in the business?

ELECTRA: “Each of us brings something crucial to the table:

You could say I’m the solution-oriented engine, driving operations, product development, winemaking, and the creative elements.

My mom is the visionary, overseeing legal, estate management, and the business flow between the U.S. and Italy. She blends sharp business acumen with an eye for design.

My brother, Justis, is the navigator, providing strategic insight and collaborating with Dave on blending our roots into the equation (ie: inclusion ideas relating to the fans who’ve been our backbone or naming wines inspired by his legendary song titles.)

Dad—when not on tour or creating a Grammy Award-winning album—is the lever which brings it all to life. An essential player in hosting events, sharing dinners with our fans and clients, and creating meaningful connections through storytelling.

It’s truly a family affair. Each of us plays our part, and like in music, we know the show must go on. Our collective drive, creativity, and bond fuel House of Mustaine.”

Coldplay Announces A Film For The Future as a Visual Companion to Moon Music

0

Coldplay have announced a new project called A Film For The Future, the 44-minute visual companion to their worldwide No. 1 album, Moon Music, and shared a trailer.

The film will premiere worldwide on YouTube on January 22, with special 360-degree screenings of the film taking place at Lightroom in London, Manchester and Seoul. A fan-led remix site for the film, powered by Microsoft AI, will also launch at afftf.coldplay.com on January 22.

A Film For The Future was first teased on a car numberplate in the artwork to Coldplay’s 2019 album Everyday Life, with a section of the project appearing in July 2024 as the lyric video for the band’s single feelslikeimfallinginlove.

The film was created by over 150 different visual artists from 45 countries. Each artist was given a handful of music snippets from Moon Music and asked to create corresponding visuals. There were no rules or guidelines, and no knowledge of other artists’ creations.

Executive Producer Ben Mor, who also directed Coldplay and Beyoncé in 2016’s Hymn For The Weekend video, says the result is “a kaleidoscopic patchwork quilt – a 44-minute multimedia tapestry.”

Ben Mor continued: “It was a huge privilege to have the bird’s eye view of such an ambitious project, working with so many incredible animators and filmmakers all working independently of each other. The final film is simply jaw-dropping and I can’t wait for Coldplay’s fans to see it.”

Coldplay said: “We’re very grateful to all the amazing artists who lent their genius to this film. They’ve created something very beautiful and we’re extremely proud of it.”

As well as being available to watch worldwide at youtube.com/coldplay, fans can enjoy the film at a limited run of exclusive 360-degree screenings at Lightroom London, Lightroom at Factory International at Aviva Studios, Manchester and Lightroom Seoul. In each venue, state-of-the-art audio technology and 11m high projection across 4 walls and the floor will allow fans to be fully immersed in the visual and audio experience.

IVE Returns With Empowering New Single “Rebel Heart” Ahead of Third EP ‘IVE EMPATHY’

0

The multi-faceted K-pop girl group IVE is back with their new single “REBEL HEART”. The track emphasizes unity, offering both comfort and connection. It portrays a group of “rebels” marching together with their own unique stories.

The song blends uplifting vocal harmonies with an exciting chorus, while soaring strings and energetic drums create an immersive sound that adds depth to the track. The lyrics provide solace, and the grand arrangement delivers a powerful contrast, leaving a lasting impression.

“REBEL HEART” is the title track from their upcoming EP, IVE EMPATHY, set to release on February 3rd. This third EP showcases IVE’s unique identity while introducing the new theme of empathy.

From their debut, IVE has pursued a complete form rather than a developmental one, continuously expanding into new realms. With each new chapter, they continue to evolve through unexpected twists in their music, confident performances, and IVE’s colors will only grow more distinct.

Kool Keith’s Dr. Octagonecologyst Cult Classic Reborn in Exclusive Vinyl Edition

0

In 1996, a strange, subversive force emerged from the depths of underground hip-hop. It was Dr. Octagonecologyst, a mind-bending concept album from Kool Keith, the visionary lyricist behind Ultramagnetic MCs. As his alter ego Dr. Octagon—a homicidal, extraterrestrial, time-traveling gynecologist—Keith delivered a wildly imaginative record that defied hip-hop conventions and carved out a unique space in the genre’s history.

Now, Dr. Octagonecologyst is getting the deluxe treatment it deserves with an exclusive collector’s edition from Interscope Vinyl Collective (IVC). Limited to just 3,000 individually numbered copies, this 2-LP reissue celebrates the album’s enduring legacy while offering fans a stunning new way to experience its sonic and visual artistry.

A Genre-Defying Masterpiece

Kool Keith’s surreal lyricism tackled themes of medicine, space travel, and human absurdity with sharp wit and psychedelic flair, creating a record that felt like a fever dream. His words were brought to life by producer Dan the Automator, who laced the album with moody, trip-hop-inspired beats that remain groundbreaking to this day. DJ Q-Bert added his signature turntablism, layering intricate scratches and rhythms that elevated the project into a symphonic hip-hop odyssey.

Tracks like “Earth People” and “Blue Flowers” became underground anthems, blending Boom Bap beats with eerie, cinematic textures. Whether delving into the grotesque humor of “Halfsharkalligatorhalfman” or the propulsive groove of “Bear Witness,” Dr. Octagonecologyst was unlike anything else in hip-hop—or music, period.

The Collector’s Edition

The new IVC edition pulls out all the stops, presenting Dr. Octagonecologyst with a level of craftsmanship befitting its cult status. Highlights include:

  • A stunning gatefold jacket with a matte finish and embossed Dr. Octagon image, accented by a red foil logo.
  • Two vinyl discs pressed on opaque bone with red and black splatter, making each record a work of art.
  • Remastered audio, bringing the album’s rich textures into sharper focus.
  • Four bonus remixes, including “Blue Flowers (Prince Paul’s ‘So Beautiful’ Mix)” and “Bear Witness (Automator’s 2 Turntables And A Razor Blade Re-Edit).”
  • A limited edition turntable slipmat featuring Pushead’s iconic cover art.

The Seldom Scene Announces New Album Remains to Be Scene, Featuring Covers of Bob Dylan, The Kinks, and More

0

Now that some of its biggest stars fill stadiums and cross over with mainstream audiences, the concept of bluegrass unshackling itself from a conservative, straight-ahead mindset can seem like a given—but the continued presence of the 53-year-running quintet The Seldom Scene acts as a reminder that it wasn’t always so. Since their inception in 1971 in a Bethesda, Maryland, basement, the 4-time Grammy-nominated group has had an elastic relationship with the bluegrass genre, incorporating songs and sounds from rock and roll, country, and pop. In fact, in their early years the band established an essential precedent that allowed bluegrass bands to expand their repertoire, laying the groundwork for today’s bluegrass boom. And there’s still something thrilling about hearing this band’s alchemical skill as they pull the unexpected together, mixing old and new and drawing throughlines from Bob Dylan to Bill Monroe.

Today, The Seldom Scene announced a brand new album, Remains to Be Scene—out on March 14th on Smithsonian Folkways—which continues their long-running legacy of pulling gems from outside of and within the bluegrass canon and reimagining them in what is now a signature style. Comprised of mandolin player Lou Reid, bassist Ronnie Simpkins, banjoist and fiddler Ron Stewart, dobro player Fred Travers, and guitarist Dudley Connell (who was recently succeeded by Grammy award-winner Clay Hess—more on that below), Remains to Be Scene features an interpretation of Jim Croce’s “A Good Time Man Like Me Ain’t Got No Business (Singin’ the Blues),” a pair of songs by Bob Dylan: “Walking Down the Line” and “Farewell Angelina,” the latter made famous by Joan Baez in 1965, while also revisiting a fan-favorite, “White Line,” from the their iconic Live at the Cellar Door album and paying tribute to their inspirations, Flatt & Scruggs with “Hard Travelin’.”

The first taste of Remains to Be Scene comes today in the form of the album’s first single, “Last of the Steam-Powered Trains,” a classic Ray Davies song from the repertoire of the fabled British rock band, The Kinks. Translating vintage rock and roll into hard-driving bluegrass seems to come naturally for the Scene’s modern lineup. Mandolin chops replace snare hits and a thumping bass covers all of the low-end duties on this propulsive paean to another time, while the slinky swing of the original gets straightened out with Stewart’s banjo rolls. The song’s signature blues guitar lick remains, though, to instantly remind listeners of the original 1968 version. “The Scene has always looked outside the box for material, and we thought this one fit the bill,” says Reid. Unsurprisingly, the band still has the ability to meld it all together, just like they’ve done for the past five decades.

Fans can stream or purchase “Last of the Steam-Powered Trains” and pre-order or pre-save Remains to Be Scene ahead of its March release right here. For more information, please visit seldomscene.com.

The Story of My Life

More Behind Remains to Be Scene: Self-produced with engineering and mixing by Jim Robeson at his studio The Bar in Rockville, Maryland, Remains to Be Scene caps the end of an era for the group in many ways. The album is dedicated to the memory of Bluegrass Hall of Famer and Seldom Scene cofounder Ben Eldridge, who retired from the group in 2014. But Eldridge remained a major presence and friend to the band, penning heartfelt liner notes for this album before his passing in April 2024.

Also notable is that Remains to Be Scene marks the final album for Dudley Connell, another Bluegrass Hall of Famer as a member of the Johnson Mountain Boys. Connell wrapped up a Seldom Scene tenure of nearly three decades on guitar and vocals with his retirement at the end of 2024. “Twenty-nine years, dude, that’s a long, long time,” Connell says with a laugh. “No regrets, I’ve loved every minute of it, and it’s been a real joy working with these guys for so long. But I want to get out while I still have my mobility and can travel, walk my dog, things like that.

About The Seldom Scene: Most legendary bluegrass artists get that way by rambling far and wide. But not The Seldom Scene, which is as legendary as they come even though the group has mostly stayed close to home in the greater Washington, D.C., vicinity for most of its 53 years of existence. And yet even as the progressive bluegrass quintet’s lineup has turned over multiple times from those early days, The Scene has maintained an admirably high standard of musicality and artistry, on record as well as onstage at live-residency venues like The Birchmere in Alexandra, Virginia. The band makes old songs sound brand new while putting a bluegrass spin on some of the least-likely cover songs in the genre. Those virtues are all in place on Remains to Be Scene, their 24th album, released on Smithsonian Folkways, on which they cover everybody from Bob Dylan to The Kinks with customary flair. The album is also another milestone effort for the Scene — the first since the passing of co-founder Ben Eldridge (who penned liner notes before his death in April 2024) as well as the last for longtime Scene member Dudley Connell, who is retiring after 29 years in the band. As usual, the rest of the Scene is taking those departures in stride. One way or another, The Seldom Scene will go on.
