5 Surprising Facts Depeche Mode’s “Construction Time Again”

Released on August 22, 1983, Construction Time Again marked a pivotal moment for Depeche Mode and marked their reputation as experimental pioneers. With Alan Wilder officially joining the lineup and the band diving into industrial and political themes, this album remains a cornerstone of their discography. Here are five lesser-known facts about this groundbreaking record.

1. Alan Wilder’s Bold Arrival

Alan Wilder wasn’t just the newest member of Depeche Mode; he also brought a fresh approach to songwriting. Two tracks on the album—“Two Minute Warning” and “The Landscape Is Changing”—were penned by Wilder, giving fans a glimpse of his distinct creative voice. His presence added depth and sophistication to the band’s sound, proving he was more than just a keyboardist.

2. A Journey to the Industrial Frontier

The seeds of the album’s industrial sound were planted when Martin Gore attended an Einstürzende Neubauten concert. Inspired by their use of unconventional “instruments,” Gore decided to infuse Construction Time Again with found sounds. From stones to toy instruments, these samples, manipulated through a Synclavier, gave the album its signature experimental edge.

3. Gareth Jones’ Reluctance

Producer Gareth Jones initially had misgivings about working with Depeche Mode, dismissing them as too commercial. Persuaded by John Foxx, Jones took on the project and became instrumental in shaping the album’s sonic identity. His work on Construction Time Again was so impactful that he continued collaborating with the band on future classics like Some Great Reward and Black Celebration.

4. “Pipeline” and Political Awakening

Martin Gore’s travels to Thailand inspired the socially conscious lyrics on the album, particularly the song “Pipeline.” This track not only incorporated raw, sampled sounds but also showcased the band’s shift toward addressing themes of inequality and environmental awareness—a major departure from their earlier, lighter pop anthems.

5. The Anthem That Defined an Era

“Everything Counts” became the album’s flagship single, reaching No. 6 on the UK charts. Its critique of corporate greed—expressed through the now-iconic lyrics “grabbing hands grab all they can”—resonated deeply in Thatcher-era Britain. The song’s blend of xylophone, melodica, and sampled sounds set the tone for Depeche Mode’s future explorations into socially conscious music.

Outro

Construction Time Again laid the groundwork for Depeche Mode’s ascent as one of the most innovative bands of the ’80s. Whether you’re a longtime fan or a newcomer, revisiting this album is a reminder of the band’s daring creativity and Alan Wilder’s undeniable influence.

The Importance and Benefits of Fire-Resistant and Fire-Retardant Curtains

0

By Mitch Rice

When it comes to enhancing safety and functionality within a space, fire-resistant and fire-retardant curtains stand out as critical yet often overlooked elements. These specialized curtains combine practical utility with safety features, offering protection and peace of mind in residential, commercial, and industrial settings. But what exactly makes these curtains indispensable, and why should they be considered an integral part of any well-thought-out interior design?

Understanding Fire-Resistant vs. Fire-Retardant Curtains

Before delving into their uses and significance, it’s essential to clarify the distinction between fire-resistant and fire-retardant curtains.

  • Fire-Resistant Curtains: These are made from materials inherently resistant to combustion. Even when exposed to flames, fire resistant curtains are less likely to catch fire and are designed to limit flame spread.
  • Fire-Retardant Curtains: These are treated with chemical solutions that enhance their ability to withstand fire. Unlike fire-resistant curtains, they are not naturally non-combustible but are made safer through specialized treatments.

Both types of curtains are tested rigorously to meet fire safety standards, making them highly reliable additions to various environments.

Why Fire Safety in Curtains Matters

Curtains, given their size and proximity to windows and ventilation sources, can often act as accelerants during a fire. Regular fabric materials are prone to catching and spreading fire, which can exacerbate an already hazardous situation. Fire-resistant and fire-retardant curtains, on the other hand, slow down the spread of flames, providing valuable time for evacuation and reducing property damage.

This feature is especially critical in spaces like hospitals, schools, theaters, and hotels, where large groups of people are present. Implementing fire-safe solutions like these curtains significantly enhances overall safety measures.

Applications of Fire-Resistant and Fire-Retardant Curtains

  1. Residential Spaces
In homes, fire-resistant or fire-retardant curtains offer protection in areas prone to fire risks, such as kitchens or living rooms with fireplaces. Beyond safety, they provide a layer of insulation and light control, making them a functional and stylish addition to home interiors.
  2. Commercial Buildings
In offices, retail spaces, and hospitality venues, these curtains serve dual purposes—improving aesthetics while adhering to fire safety regulations. Their use can contribute to creating a safer environment for employees, customers, and guests.
  3. Public Spaces and Institutions
Large-scale facilities such as auditoriums, theaters, and schools often require fire-retardant curtains. These curtains help manage risks in settings where fabric is a dominant component of the decor and where evacuation may involve large crowds.
  4. Industrial Settings
Factories and warehouses, where the risk of fire hazards is high, benefit greatly from fire-resistant curtains. These curtains can compartmentalize spaces and reduce the risk of fire spreading from one area to another.

The Multifaceted Benefits of Fire-Resistant Curtains

  1. Enhanced Safety
The primary benefit of these curtains is their ability to slow down fire spread, providing crucial minutes for occupants to evacuate. This feature is instrumental in saving lives and minimizing injuries during fire incidents.
  2. Regulatory Compliance
In many industries, fire safety regulations mandate the use of fire-retardant materials. Installing these curtains ensures compliance with local safety codes, reducing the risk of legal penalties.
  3. Improved Durability
Fire-resistant and fire-retardant curtains are often made from high-quality materials, ensuring durability and longevity. These curtains retain their safety features even after regular washing and exposure to sunlight, making them a worthwhile investment.
  4. Versatility in Design
Modern fire-resistant curtains come in a variety of colors, textures, and styles, allowing them to blend seamlessly with any interior decor. Their aesthetic versatility ensures safety doesn’t come at the expense of style.
  5. Noise and Light Control
In addition to fire safety, many of these curtains offer secondary benefits such as noise reduction and blackout capabilities. These features make them particularly valuable in spaces where privacy, sound insulation, or light control is needed.

Choosing the Right Curtains for Your Needs

When selecting fire-resistant or fire-retardant curtains, consider the following factors:

  • Material and Certification: Ensure the curtains meet recognized fire safety standards and certifications.
  • Environment: Choose curtains based on the specific risks associated with the space, such as high-heat zones or areas with heavy foot traffic.
  • Maintenance Requirements: Look for curtains that are easy to clean and maintain without compromising their fire safety features.
  • Customization Options: Many providers offer custom fire-retardant curtains tailored to your specific dimensions and design preferences.

The Peace of Mind That Comes with Preparedness

While no one wants to imagine the possibility of a fire, being prepared is the best way to mitigate its risks. Fire-resistant and fire-retardant curtains are a proactive step toward creating a safer environment. By investing in these specialized curtains, you not only protect lives and property but also add a layer of functionality and design to your space.

In a world where safety is paramount, fire-resistant and fire-retardant curtains serve as a practical and effective solution, proving that thoughtful choices can make a world of difference. Whether for a home, office, or industrial setting, these curtains are a smart investment for anyone prioritizing safety, compliance, and peace of mind.

Rising Star Maggie Antone Confirms 2025 North American Headline Tour

0

Today, rising vocalist, songwriter and producer Maggie Antone confirms a run of headline dates in early 2025, with support from Eli Winders, Molly Forbes and Kinsley. See full routing below—including stops in Washington D.C., Philadelphia, Antone’s hometown of Richmond and more—and get tickets beginning this Friday at 10A.M. local time HERE.

Additionally, Antone will make her debut at Nashville’s Grand Ole Opry on December 13 alongside other rising country artists—get tickets HERE. The performance at the historic venue closes out a nonstop year, which saw Antone release her debut album, Rhinestoned, tour with 49 Winchester, Ella Langley, Trampled by Turtles and Kat Hasty, play shows with Brent Cobb, Ian Munsick, Marty Stuart and The Red Clay Strays and perform at festivals including Bonnaroo, Bourbon & Beyond and Born & Raised.

Antone’s critically acclaimed debut album, Rhinestoned, was released in August via her own label Love Big in partnership with Thirty Tigers—get it HERE. Named one of the best albums of 2024 by Rough Trade, Rhinestoned features singles “Everyone But You”—praised by Holler as a “tender and sweetly shy ballad”—“Suburban Outlaw,” title track “Rhinestoned,” “Johnny Moonshine” and a solo version of “I Don’t Wanna Hear About It,” which was previously released as a duet with Brendan Walter.

Antone’s playful humor, distinctly raspy drawl and undeniable charisma land the initial punches on Rhinestoned. A closer listen reveals the vocalist, songwriter and producer’s overarching desire to heal her heart by opening up and extending a helping hand to anyone who wants to do the same. It’s Antone’s ability to contrast her raucousness with a disarming vulnerability that makes Rhinestoned the honest affirmation of life’s ups and downs she hoped it would be. “No matter how big or small it is,” Antone says, “when you’ve gone through something and you hurt, it matters.”

Rhinestoned was co-produced by Antone alongside Carrie K. (Noah Kahan, Jessie Murph, Suki Waterhouse), with writing contributions from Trent Dabbs (Ingrid Michaelson, Kacey Musgraves), Aaron Raitiere (Lady Gaga, Ashley McBryde), Jillian Jacqueline (Keith Urban, Little Big Town) and Antone’s longtime hero Natalie Hemby (The Highwomen, Miranda Lambert).

Born and raised in Richmond, VA, Antone has been hailed as a bold new voice on the rise in alternative country. Her cover of Tyler Childers’ “Lady May” won her instant attention, and Interpretations, a follow up collection of covers including Dolly Parton’s “Jolene,” John Prine’s “Spanish Pipe Dream” and more, was released in late 2022 to early acclaim. A songwriter since the age of 16, Antone has made music her full-time job since leaving college in late 2021. She is determined to make music that connects with people and write songs that make audiences feel seen and heard, a quality she deeply admires in the artists that have so inspired her to choose this path.
