5 Surprising Facts About David Bowie’s “Hunky Dory”

David Bowie’s Hunky Dory was the moment he started shaping the sound and identity that would define him for decades. Released in December 1971, Hunky Dory might not have been a smash hit right away, but it quickly became one of Bowie’s most revered works. A mix of theatricality, introspection, and cultural references, the album gave us classics like Changes, Life on Mars?, and Oh! You Pretty Things. But beyond its well-documented brilliance, there are some lesser-known stories behind the album that make it even more fascinating. Here are five facts that show just how ahead of his time Bowie truly was.

1. Life on Mars? Started as a Parody of a Frank Sinatra Hit

Imagine hearing Frank Sinatra’s My Way and thinking, “I could do something more surreal with that”—because that’s exactly what Bowie did. The origins of Life on Mars? trace back to an early song Bowie wrote called Even a Fool Learns to Love, which used the same French melody that My Way would later be adapted from. When Paul Anka swooped in, secured the rights, and turned it into Sinatra’s now-iconic ballad, Bowie was frustrated. So what did he do? He wrote Life on Mars? using a similar chord progression but with a completely different, more cinematic narrative. The result? A song that, ironically, became even more legendary.

2. Mick Ronson’s Orchestration on Hunky Dory Was His First Time Arranging Strings

Mick Ronson is often celebrated for his guitar work, but on Hunky Dory, he proved he was a one-man orchestra. When Bowie asked him to write string arrangements for Life on Mars?, Ronson had never arranged strings before. He learned on the spot, drawing inspiration from classical composers and his own rock background. The result was nothing short of breathtaking—his orchestral work on Life on Mars?, Quicksand, and The Bewlay Brothers added a layer of grandeur that made the album sound like a surreal Broadway show. Bowie’s faith in Ronson paid off, and it helped shape his role in The Spiders from Mars.

3. Kooks Was Written as a Welcome Message to His Newborn Son—On the Spot

Bowie wasn’t just making music for himself—he was crafting songs for the next generation. After his son Duncan (then known as Zowie Bowie) was born on May 30, 1971, Bowie rushed home and wrote Kooks the same day as a tribute to his newborn. The song is full of charming, whimsical lyrics about what it’s like growing up in an unconventional, artsy household. When he performed the song on BBC’s In Concert just days later, he introduced it by saying: “I’d like to sing a song which has just been written and dedicated to my newly born son”—cementing it as one of the most personal moments in his entire catalog.

4. Andy Warhol Hated the Song Andy Warhol

David Bowie idolized Andy Warhol. Andy Warhol… did not reciprocate that feeling—at least not when it came to the song Bowie wrote for him. Andy Warhol, a folky, flamenco-tinged tribute to the pop artist, was meant to be an affectionate nod to his mentor. But when Bowie played the track for Warhol during a visit to The Factory in New York, Warhol reportedly sat in silence, visibly unimpressed. After an awkward pause, he changed the subject and started talking about Bowie’s shoes. Bowie later reflected that the encounter was a little weird but still found Warhol’s reaction fascinating in its own way.

5. Rick Wakeman Turned Down Joining Bowie’s Band—For Yes

Rick Wakeman’s piano work on Hunky Dory is phenomenal—his flourishes on Changes and Life on Mars? are instantly recognizable. Bowie, knowing he had a virtuoso on his hands, offered Wakeman a full-time spot in The Spiders from Mars. But Wakeman had other plans—he turned down the offer to join progressive rock giants Yes, where he became one of the most famous keyboardists in rock history. Imagine how different Ziggy Stardust might have sounded if Wakeman had said yes to Bowie instead!

Hunky Dory wasn’t an instant commercial success, but it was a defining moment in Bowie’s evolution as an artist. It was the album where Bowie truly found his voice, blending surrealism, personal reflection, and an obsession with pop culture into something completely his own. From its playful songwriting to its orchestral grandeur, it remains one of the most endlessly fascinating albums of all time.

Out March 7 via Avenue/Rhino, the landmark compendium brings together the band’s formative works from 1970–1976 on CD, following the sold-out release of its vinyl box set on Record Store Day 2022. Available in a 4-CD configuration, the package showcases each essential album from that pivotal time period: Eric Burdon Declares War, Black Man’s Burdon and Love Is All Around. Arriving at the outset of WAR’s 55th Anniversary, the collection not only celebrates the band’s pathbreaking journey, but showcases the origins of a legacy defined by unparalleled fusion and relentless creativity – and one which continues to thrive more than half a century later.

Pre-Order Eric Burdon & WAR – The Complete CD Collection Here.

One of music’s defining and most enduring soul and funk groups, WAR was founded in Long Beach, CA. In 1970, producer Jerry Goldstein united a seven-piece band with former Animals lead singer Eric Burdon, an alliance which would go on to produce the #1 worldwide hit, “Spill the Wine.” 55 years later, this chapter in WAR’s hit-making history has now been reassembled and meticulously remastered by award-winning engineer Bernie Grundman, honoring this “barrier-breaking collaboration from a trail-blazing era” (Classic Rock).

Having recently kicked things off with a performance at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, WAR’s anniversary celebrations extend all throughout 2025. On February 7th, the band will release Live In Japan 1974 – their first live album to feature all seven original members in 50 years – and this summer, they will receive their star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, with dozens of tour dates in between.

John Mayall’s Legacy Celebrated with Massive Box Set Featuring Blues Legend

0

Madfish and the John Mayall Estate are proud to announce the forthcoming release of a boxset celebrating John Mayall’s remarkable career on the 7th of March 2025.

This new collection of previously unreleased live concerts features sound-desk and audience recordings capturing a host of line-ups with guitar legends Mick Taylor, Harvey Mandel, Walter Trout, and Coco Montoya; drummers extraordinaire Keef Hartley, Mike Gardner, and Colin Allen; bass supremos Larry Taylor, John McVie, Steve Thompson; and horn maestros Blue Mitchell, Johnny Almond, and Clifford Solomon, all featured along with many more.

Mayall’s influence and appeal were worldwide; the selection of recordings herein showcases his timeless, singular sound. Captured from 30 incredible performances in cities including New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Paris, Milan, London, and more, the collection spans a 25-year period and offers a comprehensive view of Mayall’s legendary live prowess.

This box set coincides with John Mayall’s much-deserved induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and was approved and fully supported by the two-time Grammy nominee before his sad passing earlier last year. The Mayall Estate also supplied two very special privately recorded shows for this box set, both performances coming from Gaz Mayall’s legendary club night Gaz’s Rockin’ Blues in 1981 and 1982 respectively. The former features Alexis Korner, and the latter is a rare example of John and his sons Gaz and Ben all appearing on stage together.

The set also includes a large hardback book with many previously unseen photos plus a commemorative art print.

John’s career is legendary, and his influence spread far beyond the confines of the blues scene. Inspired by renowned American blues players, his music career began while at art school playing with fellow student Peter Ward and other local bands. Following advice to move to London’s burgeoning British blues scene, he immediately found an enthusiastic and receptive audience. His own obsession with the blues found a natural home in clubs like the Marquee, The Flamingo, The Fillmore, The Scene, and Klooks Kleek, all fertile proving grounds for Mayall’s style and various line-ups. His reputation quickly grew as he introduced exciting new talent into his Bluesbreakers line-ups.

Throughout his musical career, Mayall provided a springboard for musicians who would themselves move on to greater recognition in some of the world’s greatest bands—Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce, John McVie, Mick Taylor, and Peter Green, to name just a few. His ability to give opportunities to new artists earned him the nickname the Godfather of British Blues.

Gaz Mayall spoke recently about the forthcoming box set, saying, “The family has been working closely with Madfish / Snapper Music over the past couple of years to bring together this formidable collection of music and memorabilia. We are very excited to present this fabulous selection to coincide with John’s long overdue induction into the Rock ’n’ Roll Hall of Fame.”
