Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival Returns in 2025 with a Star-Studded Lineup and Deep Musical Roots

0

On July 16-20, 2025, new and long-time fans will gather for the Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival on the Walsh Farm in Oak Hill, NY, a historic village nestled in the Great Northern Catskills. They’ll come to see nearly 50 bluegrass, newgrass, and roots music groups including festival favorites Del McCoury Band, Sam Bush Band, I’m With Her, Sierra Hull, Della Mae, and others. They’ll also welcome, for the first time The California Honeydrops, Cris Jacobs, and more. The host band, once again, is Dry Branch Fire Squad, led by celebrated storyteller, Ron Thomason. This year’s Artist-in-Residence will be Grammy award-winning bluegrass guitarist, vocalist, songwriter, and producer, Woody Platt. As Artist-in-Residence, Woody will collaborate with various artists throughout the weekend and will perform with his own band, Woody Platt & The Bluegrass Gentlemen, a supergroup of the genre’s top musicians.

As always, Grey Fox attendees can look forward to a ‘Big Tent’ approach to the event’s lineup. While many of the festival’s artists are rooted in bluegrass, several push the boundaries of the genre, making them hard, if not impossible, to categorize. These include the innovative and jazzy Mr Sun, the black stringband New Dangerfield, indie-folk songstress Lindsay Lou, the rootsy-Americana phenom, AJ Lee & Blue Summit, and others.

It’s safe to say that Grey Fox is a highly seasoned stew of bluegrass, newgrass, roots, and Americana, with a spicy international flavor. This year’s lineup features JigJam from Ireland; Larry & Joe who blend Venezuelan Musica Llanera with American roots music; IBMA International Tour Grant Recipients, Johnny & The Yooahoos from Germany; Campbell/Jensen from London; plus our Canadian friends who bring old-time, Cajun, Celtic, and Quebecois to the Grey Fox stages: Le Winston Band, Cécilia, and The Lonesome Ace Stringband.

Another beloved tradition at Grey Fox is presenting hot, up-and-coming artists through its Emerging Artist Showcase. Competition is fierce as dozens of artists apply from around the country and beyond for a handful of spots. This year’s official Emerging Artists include The Wilder Flower (NC), High Horse (MA), The Litch Brothers (WA), Pythagoras (TN), Rakish (NC), and Berklee College of Music’s Catfish in the Sky and The Jean-Baptiste Cardineau Show. Fans can catch them at Creekside, Grassroots, and New Belgium-Bells Gig Rig stages throughout the weekend.

Tyler Campbell, a pilot, photographer, and Grey Fox fan from Chestertown, MD, says, “It’s all about community and the sense of belonging. Once you go, you know. Add the finest music I can imagine and it’s the week I look forward to all year round. It’s my place to unwind, relax, and connect with things that really matter.”

Kindness and generosity abound at Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival. Campers look out for one another, share meals, jam together, and welcome the chance to help strangers. Likewise, the festival is sensitive to the needs of the larger musical community. Grey Fox 2025 is honored to present several North Carolina bands whose lives or communities were greatly impacted by Hurricane Helene’s devastating floods last fall, among them Grammy-winning Steep Canyon Rangers, Unspoken Tradition, Casey Driessen’s Red Shoe Stringjam, Tanasi, and others.

Three very special performances will take place at Grey Fox 2025. On Thursday, Hazel at 100: Della Mae with Laurie Lewis and Alice Gerrard will celebrate the extraordinary life and music of Hazel Dickens. Also on Thursday, The Special Consensus will bring its 50th Anniversary Tour to the festival. On Saturday, Grey Fox will present A Woodstock Celebration in Memory of Happy Traum — the iconic recording artist, songwriter, publisher, founder of Homespun Music Instruction, and beloved figure in the Woodstock music scene. This one-of-a-kind tribute will feature Adam Traum, Cindy Cashdollar, Jay Ungar, Molly Mason, Mike Merenda, Ruthy Ungar, Darol Anger, Eugene Ruffolo and others.

Much, much more is in store for festival goers. The Family Stage provides music, crafts, dances, puppets, movies and more for kids from 2 to 92. The Grey Fox Bluegrass Academy for Kids, the nationally recognized music program, returns for three days of learning and a performance on the main stage. Academy registration for kids from 8 to 17 years of age begins April 1 for classes in guitar, fiddle, mandolin, banjo, bass, and cello. There is no charge for the program.

Boyz II Men and SoundExchange Rally Congress for Music Fairness on World Radio Day

0

SoundExchange, an unabashed supporter of artist rights and fairness for all creators across the music industry, is celebrating yesterday’s delivery to the U.S. Congress of a letter signed by more than 300 recording artists supporting passage of the bipartisan American Music Fairness Act (AMFA). Legendary, 19-time platinum-selling, four-time GRAMMY -winning R&B group Boyz II Men was on hand in Washington, D.C., to meet with lawmakers and deliver the letter – which demands legislators take action to require broadcasting corporations compensate recording artists for the use of their music on AM/FM radio – on World Radio Day.

While on Capitol Hill, Boys II Men members Nathan MorrisShawn Stockman, and Wanyá Morris sat down with NBC’s Ryan Nobles for an exclusive interview about AMFA and the need to pay artists when their music is played on AM/FM radio. That interview is slated to air next week on NBC’s Today morning show.

Artists spanning eras and genres that have signed on to the letter that Boyz II Men shared with lawmakers include Aerosmith, Barbra Streisand, Becky G, Bonnie RaittCarly SimonCarole KingCeline DionDarius RuckerDavid FosterElvis CostelloGene SimmonsGeorge StraitGloria EstefanJames Taylor, Jewel, Joan JettJosh GrobanLil JonLin-Manuel MirandaMariah Carey, Matchbox Twenty, Miranda LambertOzzy Osbourne, P!nk, Reba, Sheryl CrowStevie Nicks, TLC, Train, Weezer and more. The members of Boyz II Men met with key lawmakers on Capitol Hill, including Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA), Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), and Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA), to discuss the critical need for AMFA legislation.

“We are thrilled and humbled by the outpouring of support AMFA has garnered among recording artists who recognize the inequities of laws that allow corporate broadcasters to make billions in advertising revenues while not paying a dime to those who make the music,” said SoundExchange President & CEO, Michael Huppe. “It’s particularly poignant that Boyz II Men members Nathan MorrisShawn Stockman, and Wanyá Morris delivered this letter to Congress on World Radio Day – because radio’s enduring appeal is something to be celebrated, but not at the expense of the hard-working professionals who create the sounds that fill the speakers. Artists must be compensated fairly for their work and AMFA will make that happen.”

“We’re proud to be on Capitol Hill today meeting with lawmakers and asking them to pass the American Music Fairness Act,” said Boyz II Men members Nathan MorrisShawn Stockman, and Wanyá Morris. “This is an issue about right and wrong. Artists – including background vocalists and musicians – work hard to create music that brings joy to millions. It’s outrageous that big radio companies are able to make billions of dollars each year in ads while denying royalties to the performers whose music attracts listeners in the first place. We hope that Congress will listen to the voices of artists and pass this bill.”

“Today, the community of music artists is speaking with one voice,” added LeAnn Rimes. “Performers spend hours, days, weeks, months, and even years working on the songs that make up the soundtracks of our lives. They should be rewarded for that work by the radio corporations that play their songs on the air.”

“When I was starting out, radio offered free promotion for artists who were looking to make it,” added Carly Simon. “That’s no longer the case. In the digital age, fewer and fewer Americans are discovering new music on the radio. Instead, AM/FM is making billions of dollars each year in ad revenue without compensating the artists whose songs they play. This needs to end. I’m proud that so many artists are speaking out today in favor of the American Music Fairness Act.”

The American Music Fairness Act (S.326/H.R.861) is bipartisan legislation that will require big radio companies to pay artists for playing their music on the air while protecting small, local radio broadcasters. It was reintroduced in the U.S. Senate last week by U.S. Senators Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), Alex Padilla (D-CA), Thom Tillis (R-NC), and Cory Booker (D-NJ), and in the U.S. House by U.S. Representatives Darrell Issa (R-CA), Jerry Nadler (D-NY), Mark Green (R-TN), Tom McClintock (R-CA), and Ted Lieu (D-CA).

AMFA offers a balanced solution that ensures music creators are paid for their work when it’s played on AM/FM radio while also protecting small, local broadcasters. Under the bill, nearly two-thirds of radio stations would pay $500 or less for unlimited music a year.

The bipartisan legislation enjoys support from a diverse coalition of artists, broadcasters, labels, and music lovers:

  • Broadcasters, such as the Alliance for Community Media, Common Frequency, Media Alliance, the National Federation of Community Broadcasters (NFCB), Prometheus Radio Project, and REC Networks – which represent a broad coalition of community broadcasters – also support the American Music Fairness Act.
  • The entire recorded music industry – artists, major labels, independent labels, unions and trade association.
  • Every Democratic and Republican administration since President Carter has supported a performance right for sound recordings in the U.S.
  • Americans support passing a law to give artists performance royalties for AM/FM radio plays by a 4:1 ratio.

Logic Confronts Gun Violence With “Pipeline,” A Powerful Anthem for Change

0

Grammy-nominated hip-hop artist Logic has released “Pipeline,” a groundbreaking new track that confronts one of America’s most pressing issues – gun violence and illegal gun trafficking. The powerful anthem features a guest verse from fellow Maryland hip-hop artist Oddisee and backing vocals from Resonate Baltimore, a Baltimore-area children’s choir, adding a powerful layer of local authenticity to the track and marking a poignant homecoming for the Maryland native.

“Pipeline” serves as the centerpiece of the “Stop the Iron Pipeline” initiative, launched by Maryland-based health system LifeBridge Health to raise awareness and inspire action around trafficking of illegal guns into Maryland and the impact of gun violence on individuals and communities. Traffickers bring these guns in from other states along Route I-95 – a major north-south corridor through the East Coast states known as the “Iron Pipeline.”

“Growing up in Maryland, I saw how gun violence tears apart families and communities—it’s an issue that hits close to home and feels deeply personal to me,” says Logic. “I contributed to this powerful project in the way I know best—through music and lyrics—telling the story of The Iron Pipeline and the impact it has. My hope is that this initiative helps create a better, safer future for the next generation.”

The track debuts alongside a gripping short film that follows the journey of illegal firearms along the Iron Pipeline. The visual narrative, produced in partnership with LifeBridge Health and creative agency StrawberryFrog, showcases Logic’s masterful storytelling abilities while highlighting a crucial social issue affecting his home state.

“Logic created an anthem that embodies the spirit of the mission and vividly articulates the societal impact of gun violence,” says StrawberryFrog’s Chief Creative Officer Tyler DeAngelo. “His authentic connection to the cause and ability to reach younger audiences makes this more than just a song—it’s a catalyst for change.”

For the streaming release of the track, Logic tapped fellow Maryland native hip-hop artist and producer Oddisee for a feature verse. Well-known and respected for promoting social activism in his music, Oddisee adds key personal perspective to the crucial issues raised in “Pipeline.”

Oddisee says, “It is well known that poverty and crime are linked. More emphasis is placed on the outcome of the combination than the cause when discussing how the two continue to impact our communities. Maryland ranks among the top states for trafficked guns. The Iron Pipeline initiative seeks to support legislation that could address the underlying issue at the root of the problem.”

“I’m privileged to have collaborated with Logic to produce a piece of art to aid the cause,” concludes Oddisee.

Sydney Ferleger, president of The Music Playground, which oversaw music supervision and video production, adds, “From the outset, we knew Logic was the ideal artist to champion this cause-his artistry and dedication to addressing critical social issues brought unparalleled depth and authenticity to the project.”

“Through the powerful connection of music, we saw a way to engage and energize people to join our effort to Stop the Iron Pipeline. We hope this movement can help community members come together, raise our voices and address the public health crisis of gun violence,” says Neil Meltzer, president and CEO of LifeBridge Health.

“Pipeline” is now available on all major music streaming platforms. The accompanying short film can be viewed on movement’s website, social media platforms and YouTube nationwide.

Additional background on the “why” behind Stop the Iron Pipeline: Firearms are the leading cause of death for kids and teens, according to Department of Health and Human ServicesMaryland has among the nation’s highest rate of out-of-state illegal gun imports, accounting for two-thirds of all gun crimes in the state, according to the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence. Research from the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health published in 2024 in JAMA Network Open concluded that “interstate gun transfers are a major contributor to gun crime, injury and death in the United States,” and in June 2024, the surgeon general declared firearm violence to be a public health crisis. In LifeBridge Health’s 2024 community health needs assessment, respondents named gun violence, neighborhood safety and gun safety among their top health-related concerns.

Boyz II Men Deliver Letter Signed By More Than 300 Major Recording Artists to Capitol Hill Lawmakers Asking for Passage of American Music Fairness Act

0

Boyz II Men – the 19-time Platinum-selling, 4-time Grammy Award-winning R&B group that first rose to prominence with their chart-topping 1992 single End of the Road – will visit Capitol Hill today for meetings with top lawmakers on the American Music Fairness Act (S.326/H.R.861), bipartisan legislation that will require big radio companies to pay artists for playing their music on the air while protecting small, local radio broadcasters. The group is meeting with lawmakers on World Radio Day, which the United Nations General Assembly first recognized in 2012 to celebrate in providing fact-based information and raising listeners’ voices in communities across the world.

Artists of all different eras, genres, and styles have signed on to a letter that Boyz II Men is sharing today with lawmakers, including Aerosmith, Barbra Streisand, Becky G, Bonnie Raitt, Carly SimonCarole KingCeline DionDarius RuckerDavid FosterElvis CostelloGene SimmonsGeorge Strait, Gloria Estefan, James Taylor, Jewel, Joan JettJosh GrobanLil JonLin-Manuel MirandaMariah Carey, Matchbox Twenty, Miranda LambertOzzy Osbourne, P!nk, Reba, Sheryl CrowStevie Nicks, TLC, Train, Weezer and more.

During their time on Capitol Hill today, Boyz II Men is meeting with key lawmakers, including Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA), Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), and Majority Leader Steve Scalise (R-LA).

“Today, the community of music artists is speaking with one voice,” added LeAnn Rimes. “Performers spend hours, days, weeks, months, and even years working on the songs that make up the soundtracks of our lives. They should be rewarded for that work by the radio corporations that play their songs on the air.”

The American Music Fairness Act was introduced in the U.S. Senate last week by U.S. Senators Marsha Blackburn (R-TN), Alex Padilla (D-CA), Thom Tillis (R-NC), and Cory Booker (D-NJ), and in the U.S. House by U.S. Representatives Darrell Issa (R-CA), Jerry Nadler (D-NY), Mark Green (R-TN), Tom McClintock (R-CA), and Ted Lieu (D-CA). Country music icon Randy Travis, who suffered a stroke that has left him unable to perform, testified last June about how the American Music Fairness Act will make a difference in the lives of artists during a House Intellectual Property Subcommittee hearing.

The American Music Fairness Act offers a balanced solution that ensures music creators are paid for their work when it’s played on AM/FM radio while also protecting small, local broadcasters.  Under the bill, nearly two-thirds of radio stations would pay $500 or less for unlimited music a year.  The bipartisan legislation enjoys support from a diverse coalition of artists, broadcasters, labels, and music lovers:

  • The entire recorded music industry – artists, major labels, independent labels, unions and trade association.
  • Every Democratic and Republican administration since President Carter has supported a performance right for sound recordings in the U.S.
  • Americans support passing a law to give artists performance royalties for AM/FM radio plays by a 4:1 ratio.

Music creators work incredibly hard to make the sound recordings we all know, love, and value.  However, the U.S. continues to be the only democratic nation in the world where artists like us are not paid when our music is played on AM/FM radio. Thankfully, there is legislation to right this injustice that has robbed us from being paid on terrestrial radio for decades. We urge you to join us in the fight to compensate music creators by supporting and passing the American Music Fairness Act.

The American Music Fairness Act would require U.S. broadcasters to finally pay for our music when it’s played on AM/FM radio. This bipartisan bill merely asks radio broadcasters to play by the same rules as digital platforms, streaming services, and others who already pay artists when they play our music. While the bill requires corporate radio giants to pay artists their fair share, it protects truly small broadcasters by allowing them to play unlimited music for $1.37 a day.

For decades now, corporate broadcasters have unjustly exploited an antiquated loophole in the law to profit from advertising generated from unlimited use of free music. Each year, AM/FM radio stations play nearly a billion songs. And each year, giant radio corporations rake in billions in advertising dollars while refusing to pay a single cent to the artists behind the music that attracts their advertisers in the first place and makes their entire business model possible.

This inequity not only harms American artists at home, but it also hurts us abroad. Most foreign countries withhold payments to us when our songs are played in their countries, simply because the U.S. doesn’t have a performance royalty. This leaves the U.S. in the dubious company of North KoreaCuba, and Iran as among the only nations that refuse to pay artists for their work. This amounts to nearly $300 million every year in lost income for American artists like us. By supporting the American Music Fairness Act, you can ensure that this money flows back to the United States.

We’re not alone in our call for fairness. Every president since Jimmy Carter has advocated for artists to be paid for AM/FM radio plays. And an overwhelming majority of Americans stand with us on this issue. A recent national poll commissioned by the musicFirst Coalition — the voice for fairness and equity for music creators — found that 73% of Americans believe it’s unfair that artists don’t get paid when their songs are played on the radio. And by a 6-1 margin Americans support Congress addressing this injustice by passing legislation such as the American Music Fairness Act.

It’s time for our nation to align with the rest of the developed world and ensure that hard-working music artists are paid fairly.

We appreciate your support and consideration of this much-needed legislation. We look forward to working with you and your staff to ensure that American artists are finally paid for their work.

Sincerely,
38 Special
