Andy Toomey Teams Up With King Crimson Legends For Bold New EP ‘Perseus Calling’

0

For most musicians, getting to record with members of the legendary King Crimson would be intimidating enough. For Jacksonville, Florida-based guitarist/singer Andy Toomey, it raised a dilemma that was even more daunting: figuring out something for them to actually play.

That’s the scenario that transpired early last year, when Toomey happened to notice that Crimson über-bassist Tony Levin and his offshoot project, Stick Men, were going to be playing a concert in Toomey’s native Jacksonville. On little more than a whim, he reached out to Levin and asked if he and his crew would be interested in doing a session together when the band hit town. The answer was an enthusiastic yes—leading to an immediate freakout when Toomey realized he had no idea what they’d be playing.

“Like the dog who caught the car, I panicked,” he recalls. “How could I write music that would be worthy of these amazing players in a few short weeks?”

Fortunately, he found the answer in February Album Writing Month (FAWM.ORG), an annual exercise that challenges songwriters to come up with 14 new tunes in 28 days. Toomey managed a full 20, and the feedback he received from the effort helped him to whittle that bumper crop down to six top-shelf compositions for his esteemed guests to sink their teeth into.

The resulting EP, Perseus Calling, shows just how fruitful Toomey’s process was. Its sextet of dreamy prog numbers proves the perfect vehicle for the celebrated talents of Levin (bass and Chapman Stick), Pat Mastelotto (drums) and Markus Reuter (Touch Guitars and loops)—all alumni of Crimson as well as compadres in Levin’s Stick Men. The record is full of symmetrical guitar lines and purposefully skewed beat patterns, overlaid with Toomey’s highly present and declaratory vocals.

The backing tracks were cut in one day at Jacksonville’s Endangered Wise Men Recording Studios (with gold-record-winning engineer Rick Grice), whereupon Toomey had another 24 hours to write and record all the lyrics. The end product certainly doesn’t come across as rushed or underthought: Toomey’s wordplay on tracks like “Hater” and “Dada” is minimalist but meaningful, and the title track even draws the suggestive silhouette of a narrative about a space probe on an ill-fated mission. As an overall package, the record makes for an auspicious debut by Toomey on his new label, Iapetus.

It helps that Toomey has a bit of a history with Levin, whom he met through the bassist’s keyboardist brother, Peter: Together with drummer Jerry Marotta, they had all recorded several tracks together in 2020 that wound up on Toomey’s albums Paper Heart and Budget Soul. But Toomey himself was no slouch going in. The definition of a highly trained pro, he holds a BFA and an MFA in music composition, with a BFA in classical guitar thrown in for good measure. Since putting out his first album in 1995, he’s written and recorded over 300 original songs. On the performing front, he’s a true Renaissance man, having played guitar in his blues band, The Andy Toomey Trio, and bass in his eponymous jazz-piano trio. That’s not to mention touring Spain in the metal outfit Jerguistas y Borrachos, singing in the U2 tribute Bonomania and playing drums in the Led Zeppelin tribute Wearing & Tearing.

The year 2025 will bring the release of a second EP Masterpiece recorded in August with Markus Reuter back on touch guitar and loops and the amazing Zach Alford (Bowie/NIN, and many others) on drums. For now, we have Perseus Calling, and the reminder it brings that a little serendipity can work wonders. Or to put it another way, if you have a dream, Stick with it.

Canadian Musicians The Cooper Brothers Join Canada’s Fight Against U.S. Tariffs

0

Internationally acclaimed country-rockers, the Cooper Brothers, are joining the fight against the threat of U.S. tariffs.

With the possibility of 25% tariffs being levied by new U.S. President Donald Trump on all Canadian goods as early as February 1st, the Cooper Brothers are re-releasing their song “That’s What Makes Us Great”.

The 51tst State? Take off, eh! The Cooper Brothers are back with a song that’s as Canadian as a double-double, a frozen pond, and a game-winning goal in overtime.

“That’s What Makes Us Great!” is a love letter to the True North, strong and free, celebrating the spirit, resilience, and unshakable pride that defines this country.

Inspired by a chance encounter with young soldiers returning from Afghanistan, Richard Cooper channeled their passion, dedication, and unwavering belief in making a difference into lyrics that remind us of what it means to be Canadian. “We never seem to toot our own horn,” Cooper reflects, “but we have so much to be thankful for.”

From universal healthcare to Tim Horton’s, from beavertails and poutine to the coldest beer and the hottest women, “That’s What Makes Us Great!” captures the essence of a country that doesn’t brag—but has every reason to.

Produced by Grammy Award-winning producer Colin Linden, this track is infused with the classic Cooper Brothers sound: heartfelt storytelling, undeniable energy, and a chorus made for singing at the top of your lungs—whether you’re in a packed hockey arena or a campfire up north.

The Cooper Brothers first gained international attention when they signed with Capricorn Records (famous for producing several of the most popular southern-rock acts of the time including The Allman Brothers and Marshall Tucker) in Macon, Georgia. Over the next few years, the Cooper Brothers released two albums under the Capricorn label, the eponymous Cooper Brothers and Pitfalls of the Ballroom. Subsequent singles “The Dream Never Dies”, “Rock and Roll Cowboys” and “I’ll Know Her When I See Her” all charted on The Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S.

Among their many accolades, the Cooper Brothers were voted Best New Group in 1978, Best MOR Group in 1979 and Best Overall Group in 1980 by Canadian Contemporary Music Programmers. In 1980, “The Dream Never Dies” also earned an A.S.C.A.P Award as one of the most played songs on U.S radio.

At the height of their career, the band toured extensively with such diverse artists as The Doobie Brothers, Joe Cocker, Charlie Daniels and the Atlanta Rhythm Section garnering stellar reviews.

The Cooper Brothers continue to perform and have released a number of critically acclaimed new albums including In From The Cold (produced by Grammy nominee Colin Linden in Nashville/featuring special guests Jim Cuddy (Blue Rodeo), Delbert McClinton and Chuck Leavell (The Rolling Stones)), Southbound (recorded at the Tragically Hip’s studio/produced by Colin Cripps (Blues Rodeo) and their latest album Radio Silence.

0

Universal Music Group, the world leader in music-based entertainment and Spotify, the world’s most popular audio streaming subscription service, today announced new, multi-year agreements for Recorded Music and Music Publishing focused on growth, innovation and the advancement of artists’ and songwriters’ success.

Sir Lucian Grainge, Chairman & CEO, Universal Music Group said, “When we first presented our vision for the next stage in the evolution of music subscription several months ago—Steaming 2.0—this is precisely the kind of partnership development we envisioned. This agreement furthers and broadens the collaboration with Spotify for both our labels and music publisher, advancing artist-centric principles to drive greater monetization for artists and songwriters, as well as enhancing product offerings for consumers.”

Daniel Ek, Spotify’s Founder and CEO, said, “For nearly two decades, Spotify has made good on its commitment to return the music industry to growth, ensuring that we deliver record payouts to the benefit of artists and songwriters each new year. This partnership ensures we can continue to deliver on this promise by embracing the certainty that constant innovation is key to making paid music subscriptions even more attractive to a broader audience of fans around the world.”

Under the new agreements, UMG and Spotify will collaborate closely to advance the next era of streaming innovation. Artists, songwriters and consumers will benefit from new and evolving offers, new paid subscription tiers, bundling of music and non-music content, and a richer audio and visual content catalog. By deepening audience experiences, driving further engagement and amplifying the connection between artists, songwriters and their fans, the collaboration between these two companies will position the industry for continued subscriber growth and retention.

The new publishing agreement establishes a direct license between Spotify and Universal Music Publishing Group across Spotify’s current product portfolio in the U.S. and several other countries, which reinforces a mutually beneficial relationship for songwriters on the platform.

The new agreements also renew the companies’ commitment to artist-centric principles, ensuring that artists continue to be properly rewarded for the share of audience engagement that they drive and that their streaming royalties remain protected through the platforms’ application of its fraud detection and enforcement systems.

Google’s Crackdown on Fake Reviews: What It Means for Professional Services

0

By Mitch Rice

For law firms, accountants, and financial advisors, a strong reputation isn’t optional—it’s everything. A single negative review can drive potential clients away, while a high star rating builds trust before you ever say a word.

But in early February, businesses across industries started seeing Google reviews disappear overnight. No explanation, no warning—just gone. This wasn’t a glitch. It was part of Google’s latest crackdown on fake reviews, driven by increasing pressure from regulators like the FTC in the U.S. and new consumer protection laws in the EU.

While the goal is to remove fraudulent reviews, many legitimate reviews have been caught in the purge. If your business has lost valuable feedback, it’s time to understand what’s happening and what you can do about it.

Why Google Is Removing Reviews

Regulators have been pressuring Google, Amazon, and other review-based platforms to crack down on manipulated ratings. Companies caught using fake reviews—whether buying positive ones or leaving negative ones for competitors—have faced massive fines.

Google’s response has been aggressive. Rather than taking a case-by-case approach, its algorithm is removing large batches of reviews at once. And it’s not just catching fake reviews—legitimate ones are being erased, too.

For professional service firms that rely on credibility, this is a serious issue. A firm that has spent years building a strong review profile could suddenly find itself with fewer ratings, a lower star average, or missing key testimonials that helped convert potential clients.

What This Means for Professional Services

Unlike restaurants or retail stores, law firms, financial advisors, and accounting firms don’t get hundreds of reviews every month. A handful of strong, well-written client testimonials can carry more weight than dozens of generic ratings.

Losing even a few key reviews can have a significant impact on how a firm appears in search results. A law firm that drops from 4.9 stars to 4.3 because of missing reviews may find potential clients clicking on a competitor instead. In an industry where trust is a deciding factor, that’s a problem.

Even worse, Google is not notifying businesses when reviews are removed. Many firms are only noticing after potential clients mention it—or when search traffic starts to dip.

Can You Get Your Reviews Back?

If you’ve lost reviews, you may be wondering how to get Google reviews removed when they unfairly disappear. Unfortunately, there’s no clear process to restore legitimate reviews that Google has erased.

The first step is to check your Google Business Profile and take note of any missing reviews. If they were recent, reach out to the clients who left them and ask if they can re-submit their feedback. In many cases, however, Google will prevent users from posting the same review again.

You can also submit a support request through Google’s Business Help Center, but responses have been mixed. Some businesses have had reviews reinstated, while others have been told that once a review is removed, it’s gone for good.

How to Protect Your Reputation Moving Forward

If you’ve lost valuable reviews, rebuilding your online reputation should be a priority. While Google’s system is unpredictable, there are steps you can take to ensure that your firm remains visible and trusted.

Encouraging satisfied clients to leave new reviews on Google is the best immediate strategy. If a dozen older reviews have vanished, adding fresh, detailed feedback can help offset the loss. Sending follow-up emails or including a review request in client communications can help restore a strong review profile.

Beyond Google, it’s also important to diversify where your reviews appear. Professional service firms should encourage clients to leave feedback on LinkedIn, Avvo (for legal professionals), Yelp, Trustpilot, and other industry-specific platforms. If Google removes reviews again, a strong presence elsewhere ensures that your reputation isn’t entirely at the mercy of one platform’s algorithm.

For businesses struggling with unfair removals or persistent negative content, working with a content removal agency can be a smart move. Companies like Reputation Riot specialize in helping firms suppress misleading content, address false reviews, and improve search rankings.

The Bottom Line

Google’s review purge isn’t going away anytime soon. As regulators push for greater transparency, more automated removals are likely. Businesses in professional services—where trust and credibility are everything—need to stay ahead of these changes.

That means proactively managing your online reputation, encouraging ongoing reviews, and diversifying your review presence across multiple platforms. If Google has erased valuable feedback, rebuilding is essential—because when potential clients search for your business, what they see in those first few results determines whether they ever walk through your door.

The exclusive event was announced following the fortieth anniversary of the release of the music icon’s magnum opus, “Hallelujah,” that has been immortalized in over 300 cover versions across multi-generations of artists and performers around the world with famous renditions from the likes of Jeff Buckley, k.d. lang, Bob Dylan, John Cale, and more.

Over 150 pieces including never before seen manuscripts, unpublished poetry, letters, as well as personal effects such as his hat, gifted fine jewelry, clothing, artwork, photographs and more will be presented for the first time to the public. This treasure trove of intimate archival material and objects representing the inspiration of Cohen’s important works and his creative flourishes and pursuits spanning across his six-decade career has been kept lovingly by his inner circle of close friends and colleagues, Aviva Layton, Anjani Thomas, with selections from the personal archives of Cork Smith and Nancy Bacal. Collectively, this is the largest privately held group of Leonard Cohen artifacts ever to come to auction.

“Leonard Cohen left behind a remarkably complete archive due to his resolute devotion to saving everything, which means that there are very few things available to his global fan base in the marketplace. Maya Delilah Announces Debut Album The Long Way Round, Blending Soul, Blues, and Pop with a Fresh Perspective

0

Maya Delilah has announced the release of The Long Way Round, her stunning full-length debut album out March 28 via Blue Note/Capitol. The London-based singer, songwriter, and guitarist has also been named a 2025 Spotify “Artist To Watch,” another sure sign of her rising star after she was named to the Fender Next “Class of 2024.” Her debut album makes good on that promise by bringing all the elements of her art together — the intimacy, the ability, the inspiration, the depth, the lightness — into one striking work.

While the 12 songs on The Long Way Round are steeped in soul-pop, they also contain rich strains of country and blues, hints of gospel and choral music, and one full serving of unvarnished funk with the flirty new single “Squeeze” out today. “This album is a combination of so many parts of me,” says Maya. “I get so influenced by different genres, people, places, and experiences that it’s always felt hard for me to fit my music into a consistent sound or mood. It took me a long time (hence The Long Way Round) to realize that it’s a beautiful thing to have a body of work that explores so many different influences.”

Making the album was also a literal journey, from a barn-based studio in Devon, England, to a home studio in Los Angeles, and back to various rooms across London. All with a cast of friends new and old, including producers Peter Miles, Josh Grant, Doug Schadt, Seth Tackaberry, and Aquilo’s Ben Fletcher and Tom Higham, as well as collaborators including Samm Henshaw, Grace Lightman, members of FIZZ, organist Cory Henry, and drummer Aaron Sterling (John Mayer, Taylor Swift).

Maya’s muse isn’t the only thing tying The Long Way Round together. Opener “Begin Again” introduces a powerful theme. As she looks back at her first car, her first kiss, her first home, she returns to the gentle hook: “Another day, another end / Oh, we begin again.” The idea of cycles frames the set as the album goes on. Depending on your interpretation, The Long Way Round could be about regaining trust in love or losing it entirely. Shuffled, these songs could trace the arc of one relationship from inception to end, or it could be the bridge between a failed romance and a thrilling new one, or it’s a dozen separate vignettes. With these songs — from soothing, psychedelic send-off “Look at the State of Me Now” to Western-inflected codependence tribute “Necklace” to the ‘70s soul music inspired “Actress” — Maya proves herself a master of not just an evocative guitar solo, but of capturing life’s biggest contradiction: why everything matters all the time and also why it’s not that deep.

“My biggest hope is that the album feels nostalgic to someone I’ve never met before,” says Maya. It’s an interesting thought given how uniquely “Maya” this set is, but that’s exactly what makes it work as intended. The warm glow, the wry smile, a sense of loss, and a yearning for renewal — we’re right there with her as she looks back, and ahead, at The Long Way Round.

A 24-year-old singer, songwriter and guitarist from North London, Maya Delilah attended the prestigious BRIT School whose alumni include Adele, Amy Winehouse, and FKA twigs, among many others. In 2020, lockdown put a pause on the background session work Maya had begun to do within her community of music-making friends, so she turned to livestreams and TikTok where she built up a devoted following with unadorned clips where she would sit cross-legged on the floor, a bed, or a table, her fingernails dancing over the strings, making the guitar sing out whole moods. Over the course of two self-released EPs (2020’s Oh Boy, 2021’s It’s Not Me, It’s You), she amassed more than 50 million streams of fan favorites like “Breakup Season” and “Tangerine Dream” that greeted heartache with humor. Maya began releasing music on Blue Note/Capitol in 2022, reinterpreting Cassandra Wilson’s cover of Neil Young’s “Harvest Moon” for Blue Note Re:imagined II, and following with a string of singles including “Silver Lining” and “Pretty Face.” Maya was named to the Fender Next “Class of 2024” — a huge co-sign from the guitar brand she’s been playing since age 8 — and has also been named a 2025 Spotify “Artist To Watch.”
