5 Surprising Facts About Elton John’s “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road”

Few albums stand the test of time quite like Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Elton John’s 1973 magnum opus. A sprawling double album packed with cinematic storytelling, genre-hopping brilliance, and some of the most iconic songs of all time, it cemented Elton John’s status as a global superstar. But even with its legendary status, there are still some lesser-known gems hidden in its history. Here are five unknown facts about Goodbye Yellow Brick Road that even die-hard fans might not know.

1. The Album Was Almost Recorded in Jamaica—And It Was a Disaster
Before settling into the idyllic Château d’Hérouville in France, Elton and his band initially planned to record the album in Kingston, Jamaica. Why? Because The Rolling Stones had just wrapped up Goats Head Soup there, and Elton wanted to capture some of that same magic. But instead of inspiration, they found chaos: political protests, logistical nightmares, and a recording studio with terrible equipment. Things got so bad that the only song recorded there, “Saturday Night’s Alright for Fighting,” sounded like it was “made on the worst transistor radio,” according to Elton. Within days, the whole operation packed up and moved to France—where history was made.
2. Elton Wrote Most of the Music in Three Days
When inspiration strikes, it really strikes. Bernie Taupin delivered the lyrics for the album in just two and a half weeks, but Elton John took things to a whole new level—writing most of the melodies for the 17 tracks in a mere three days. That’s right: in less than 72 hours, songs like “Candle in the Wind,” “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,” and “Bennie and the Jets” took shape. The man was on fire. It’s a testament to his otherworldly talent and intuition as a songwriter.
3. “Bennie and the Jets” Wasn’t Supposed to Be a Single—Until Radio Stations Made It One
The funky, futuristic “Bennie and the Jets” wasn’t even on the radar as a single—until U.S. radio DJs took matters into their own hands. American stations, especially R&B stations in Detroit, started playing the song non-stop, recognizing its crossover potential. The label eventually gave in and released it as a single, and it shot straight to #1 in the U.S. Even more incredible? The “live” sound of the track was completely fake—producer Gus Dudgeon added artificial crowd noise, including a sample from a Jimi Hendrix concert, to make it sound like an arena anthem.
4. “Funeral for a Friend” Was Written as the Soundtrack to Elton’s Own Imaginary Funeral
Elton John has a flair for the dramatic, and nothing proves it more than the epic opening of the album. “Funeral for a Friend” wasn’t inspired by a real-life loss—it was Elton fantasizing about what music he’d want played at his own funeral. The grandiose, synthesizer-heavy instrumental intro, created by engineer David Hentschel on an ARP 2500 synth, segues perfectly into “Love Lies Bleeding,” making for one of the most stunning album openers in rock history. It remains a live favorite to this day, often played in extended versions that showcase Elton’s dazzling piano skills.
5. “Harmony” Was Almost a Hit, But Timing Killed It
“Harmony,” the album’s final track, had all the makings of a smash single—lush harmonies, soaring melodies, and an unforgettable chorus. It was even considered for release as a fourth single, but the sheer success of Goodbye Yellow Brick Road worked against it. By the time they were ready to release another single, Elton had already moved on to Caribou, and the label didn’t want to overshadow his next album. However, “Harmony” became a cult classic, getting heavy airplay on FM radio and even topping Boston’s WBZ-FM chart in 1974.

A half-century later, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road remains untouchable—a symphony of excess, heartbreak, and sheer musical bravado. It’s the sound of an artist at his creative peak, effortlessly blending glam rock, balladry, and cinematic storytelling. If rock ‘n’ roll had a golden age, this was its crown jewel.

5 Surprising Facts About Joni Mitchell’s “Court And Spark”

Joni Mitchell’s Court and Spark is one of her best-selling albums and also a masterclass in storytelling, sonic evolution, and artistic ambition. Released in 1974, the album brought together folk, rock, and jazz influences in a way that only Mitchell could. While fans might recognize classics like “Help Me” and “Free Man in Paris,” there’s a lot more to this album than meets the ear. Let’s dive into five lesser-known facts about this groundbreaking record.

1. The L.A. Express Wasn’t Just a Backing Band—They Were a Statement

Mitchell’s collaboration with the jazz fusion group L.A. Express wasn’t just about adding new textures to her music—it was a deliberate artistic shift. While folk purists may have been surprised by the inclusion of electric keyboards, saxophones, and intricate drum work, Mitchell saw it as a natural evolution. Saxophonist Tom Scott and his bandmates didn’t just back her up; they transformed Court and Spark into a genre-defying masterpiece, bridging the gap between folk introspection and jazz complexity.

2. The Unlikely Cameo of Cheech & Chong

Yes, that Cheech & Chong. The iconic comedy duo makes a surprise vocal appearance on “Twisted,” the album’s playful closing track. Originally a 1952 jazz tune by Annie Ross, Mitchell reimagined it with her own sly delivery, tackling themes of psychoanalysis and self-awareness. Adding Cheech & Chong’s voices was more than just a quirky inclusion—it was Mitchell’s way of thumbing her nose at the critics who dissected her every lyric as if they were case studies.

3. “Free Man in Paris” Was Almost Too Personal to Release

The song might sound like an anthem of liberation, but it was actually written about David Geffen, Mitchell’s close friend and one of the most influential music executives of the era. Geffen had been under immense pressure managing artists like Jackson Browne and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, and Mitchell painted a vivid picture of his escape to Paris. What many don’t realize is that Geffen initially felt uneasy about being the subject of a song. Mitchell reportedly had to convince him that it was more of a tribute than an exposé.

4. A Grammy-Winning Deep Cut That Almost Didn’t Happen

“Down to You” wasn’t one of the album’s singles, but it won the Grammy Award for Best Arrangement Accompanying Vocalist(s) in 1975. Featuring lush orchestral arrangements, it’s one of Mitchell’s most cinematic compositions. However, Mitchell initially considered scrapping it from the final tracklist. She worried that its introspective and philosophical lyrics might feel too heavy compared to the more accessible tracks. Thankfully, producer Henry Lewy convinced her otherwise, and it became one of her most celebrated deep cuts.

5. “Raised on Robbery” Featured One of Rock’s Greatest Guitarists

Joni Mitchell might be known for her poetic lyrics and open-tuned guitar style, but Court and Spark has its fair share of rock energy. Nowhere is that clearer than on “Raised on Robbery,” where none other than The Band’s Robbie Robertson lends his electric guitar prowess. The result? A swaggering, blues-infused rock track that stands out in Mitchell’s discography. It was a bold move for an artist known for intimate acoustic ballads, but it helped redefine her image at a crucial moment in her career.

Fifty years after its release, Court and Spark still stands as a landmark album that expanded the boundaries of folk, rock, and jazz. From unexpected collaborations to behind-the-scenes anxieties, these lesser-known details highlight just how much innovation went into the record.

Yamaha Corporation (hereafter, Yamaha) confirms its partnership with Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (MMNA) as part of the upcoming debut of the refreshed 2025 Mitsubishi Outlander, set for full unveiling in February 2025. The new Outlander features enhancements inside and out, highlighted by a premium audio system developed through an innovative collaboration with Yamaha.

In this groundbreaking partnership, Yamaha renowned audio experts have joined forces with Mitsubishi Motors’ engineers to develop two premium in-car sound systems specifically for the company’s flagship vehicle in the North American market. This marks the first time Yamaha has created a bespoke in-car audio system for a North American market vehicle, underscoring the significance of this collaboration.

However, this is not the first time Yamaha has partnered with Mitsubishi Motors. Internationally, in October 2024Yamaha Japan also debuted Yamaha-branded audio systems in the home-market Mitsubishi Outlander, following its initial integration with Mitsubishi’s XFORCE back in 2023. While the XFORCE is primarily available in the ASEAN region, this second venture will be featured in all 2025 Outlander models sold globally.

“We want to deliver excitement with a sound that impresses the driver’s heart and brings them closer to the artists. Yamaha respects the artists’ sounds, so we articulately craft the bass, mid and high ranges. We innovate to deliver a heart-stirring moment in the cabin,” says sound-meister Tomokazu Hikida.

MMNA will share more details about the 2025 Mitsubishi Outlander, including extensive feature updates and specifications, during the vehicle’s official North American debut in mid-February 2025.

Yamaha will continue to deliver high-quality Yamaha-branded automotive audio products through our ongoing partnership with Mitsubishi Motors.
